Attention, heterosexuals. The way you self-identify is, it turns out, terribly oppressive:
A Wheel Of Innate Sin For Which You Must Atone. Hours of fun. And that question-begging fatuousness won’t be internalised without a little prompting.
Following the complaint, Mr Golash has replied that his disapproval of the term straight was directed at the entire class, not a particular individual, and is therefore merely a matter of encouraging “reflection” on the part of heterosexual students. Specifically,
Should any gay readers have been rendered tearful and downtrodden by an utterance of the word straight, as Mr Golash would have us believe, do feel free to share your harrowing tales in the comments below. Sad music can be added for a small fee.
And so, according to Mr Golash, we will march towards a shining tomorrow via cultivated neuroticism – fretting about the allegedly wounding properties of the word straight – and by telling heterosexual male students that they are merely a “product of the patriarchy that teaches young boys not to care.” Because, unlike the word straight, that’s not insulting at all, apparently.
The claim that straight male students are the hapless dupes of some nebulous yet diabolical and all-pervasive force is not disputed by Mr Golash. And it remains unclear whether all this caring and reflection should extend to being concerned by the dogmatic overreach of an activist high school teacher – an avowed communist and Antifa-booster who uses the classroom to champion Hamas – and who punishes students for their unfashionable honesty. On which, more in a moment.
It’s perhaps worth mentioning that the term straight – meaning heterosexual or sexually conventional – is generally thought to have its origins in gay American slang of the 1940s. Which is to say, it was a favoured in-group term used by some gay people, and often used sarcastically.
If doubt remains as which party may be in need of “reflection,” I should also probably mention our educator’s hair.
And more seriously, this:
You see, if students are presented with the statement “Only women can get pregnant,” and then fail to tick the word “false,” this is a basis for an ‘F’. And any attempt by a student to defend their answer – say, by referring to observable reality – will be construed by Mr Golash as disruptive behaviour and a basis for further scolding.
And so,
Quite right, madam. Though other, perhaps more obvious candidates for removal may come to mind.
Previously in the world of neurotic word-policing.
Oh look, three buttons. I wonder what they do.
“…handed out a “Social Identity Wheel” worksheet to his class which supposedly helps determine who has “unearned privilege or oppression.“
In which particular class? Maths? English? What, I wonder, should he have been teaching instead of victimhood?
High-school Ethnic Studies. Because that’s where you get to tell students how oppressive and unfair their whiteness and straightness is. And to tell them that men get pregnant all the time. Obviously.
Got to be this.
Oh, absolutely. I have tissues on stand-by.
I’ll just leave these here.
As I may have previously observed, the Wheel of Hatred is missing a category:
Epithet: The word others use to refer to you.
E.g. Nonce, Groomer, Cultist, Pervert, Paedophile.
Ian Golash: I get to self-identify, and you have to grovel to my self-identity.
Also Ian Golash: You don’t get to self-identify, and you have to grovel to the identity I choose for you.
Wicked little bullies, and the local news types who normally jump to do a panic piece on the so-called “epidemic” of bullying remain silent.
At the risk of beating a dead horse, the very term “privilege” is deeply dishonest: Being intelligent is an advantage, not a privilege. Likewise being healthy, having loving parents, living far away from criminals, and so on.
Leftists love to abuse language in order to create confusion, hence the use of “privilege”: Privilege derives from the Latin for “private law”, referring to the laws and customs that entitled members of the ruling class to immunity from laws that were strictly applied to the peasants. Hence a nobleman could beat or murder a peasant without fear of prosecution, while a peasant would be subject to the most harsh punishment. Come to think of it, we see that sort of privilege at work today in “woke” theories of criminal justice.
Which is in itself utterly insane: High school students should be studying history and economics and civics.
Entirely fair to label that teacher with such terms. And all communists deserve abuse.
But I hope you wouldn’t apply those terms to every gay man (or lesbian): If you visit Instapundit you will encounter commenters who insist that all gays and lesbians are child rapists, and I’ve encountered a very few in real life too. (Just as I’ve met people who insist that all blacks are criminals, all Jews are evil conspirators, etc.)
There’s an obvious perverse incentive built into “educators” placing children’s sexuality within the purview of their teachers – it will attract more highly motivated paedophiles than sincere pedagogues. To the extent that, if left unchecked, paedophiles will first influence then inevitably come to dominate the teaching professions.
I don’t know what you think being gay would have to do with that?
“Principal Ray Garcia-Morales”
Ah yes – from Cyril Kornbluth’s classic, no doubt.
The preoccupation of many self-styled “activists” with overstepping normal classroom boundaries – and specifically, probing the inchoate sexuality of minors – does rather raise concerns of that kind. Schools have always attracted nonces, of course, but they were to some extent inhibited by the threat of quite vehement social disapproval.
My own unremarkable comprehensive school employed several such creatures. My friend’s younger sister – aged, I think, 13 – had attracted unwelcome hands-on attention from a predatory teacher, a man in his thirties. I remember the commotion that was caused the following afternoon as said friend’s father gave the teacher in question a vigorous beating in front of his class.
The teacher was never seen again – at least not by us. Perhaps he became someone else’s problem.
Another teacher was obviously interested in such intergenerational possibilities, albeit with boys, though was never seen quite crossing the line, merely spending a lot of time very, very close to it. And another teacher was happy to let his fifth- and sixth-form students know about his sexual relationship with a teenage girl who’d left the same school only a year earlier.
I very much doubt my school was some outlier in this regard.
Now, however, we see a seemingly endless parade of psychological misfits who wish to sexualise the classroom, even in pre-school, and make their own sexual identities and assorted kinks a daily feature of those environments.
Which is, I think, a little odd. And not a happy trend.
As soon as any organisation which gate-keeps access to children is captured by a cult prepared to sacrifice the protection of those children for its ideological objectives, the degradation of those children becomes inevitable.
The obscenity of Rochdale’s police and social worker communities disregarding the mass gang-rape of the children in their charge in order not to tarnish their woke anti-racist credentials is only one in a long list of sordid examples.
And the same perverse incentive exists with regard to ideologues more interested in indoctrination than genuine education. (And once such malevolent people are ensconced in an institution, they will hire more of their own while excluding good people.)
Only that I keep seeing people making that connection, so it is always in the back of my mind just as is the “international Jewish conspiracy” theory.
The book Goodbye Good Men described how, once libertine gay men managed to establish themselves in positions of authority, they systematically excluded heterosexuals and sincere Catholics from their seminaries until the institutions were thoroughly corrupted.
And we now see leftists systematically excluding non-leftists from schools and other institutions. And kicking out those who are already in.
It’s like they’re trying to make gay people look f**king stupid.
Well, in terms of farce, it’s up there with the claim that some people will be oppressed by a glimpse, during a Zoom meeting, of someone else’s wedding photo. Should one be visible somewhere in the background.
No, really. I shit you not:
There’s more here.
Being happily married is, I suppose, “unearned privilege”. [ Rolls eyes. ]

No wonder America is going down the tubes.

She chose what to wear. What did she think was going to happen?
Please don’t.
But we have tissues and the ‘sad Hulk’ music…
That’s for those telling their tales of woe. Something a bit more substantial is needed for those having to read same. 100 proof or better.

I wouldn’t be afraid of losing a bit of cash on a bet Ethnic Studies is required at the school.
Back in my day we firmly believed all of these “studies” graduates would have little relevant success in the job market. Now we’ve seen how they slowly created mandates for hiring them. Administrators, consultants, teachers, forum jannies, commissars.
Searching tells me California was the first with such a requirement but Washington is at least ‘studying’ the requirement. So Mr Golash’s position is secure no matter how many children he damages.

My apologies if this is TMI.
I always found the stories of the UK grooming gangs incredible – not that I disbelieved them, but that so many people could be aware of what was going on and yet do nothing.
Well.
I have recently and very unexpectedly come into the charge of an 18 year old female relative, a rather distant one, being the only family in the same province and not a drunk, drug addict or criminal. Her mother would take her to bars when she was as young as 12, get drunk and high, and then forget about her and leave her there.
The stories that I’ve heard from her and her therapist over the last few months are infuriating and sickening by turns, and the only reason I’m not drunk myself 24/7 at this point is that I now have a dependent to support.
If I stop posting here it’s probably because I’ve been indicted for manslaughter and they won’t let me have a smartphone in the pokey.
said friend’s father gave the teacher in question a vigorous beating in front of his class
And in my more rational moments it occurs to me that that’s where things have gone wrong – there was a time when despite such behaviour being unambiguously premeditated aggravated assault, no jury would convict (and the local constabulary would look the other way in the first place). Then again, I expect that’s because the number of malefactors was limited and the number of incidents rare. Even if granted legal immunity and restricting myself to merely those who knew exactly what was going on and still repeatedly returned my charge to her mother, I don’t have enough time before I die to beat up that many people.
I’m going to pour myself a drink and watch Law-Abiding Citizen again. It helps.
So far as I’m aware, the father of my friend – whose home I used to visit – didn’t attract any attention from the police. I doubt the incident was reported, presumably for fear of what it would reveal about the teacher and, by extension, the school. In fact, my memory is of how odd it was that, beyond the inevitable schoolboy gossip, no adults acknowledged what had happened – or what had happened beforehand. The teacher in question simply disappeared.
What do you have for people who miss Ry-Krisp?
to not be straight is to be ‘crooked’
I guess then to not be gay is to be ‘sad’. Or is applying the traditional meaning of the word ‘gay’ in this context silly and inappropriate?

That’s what I usually fear: It is much easier for a bureaucracy to pass a problem on to someone else than to actually deal with it properly: Less trouble, less embarrassment. And there are always those who will constantly endeavor to make ever more difficult do the right thing.
Did it happen to coincide with the appearance of an oddly shaped mound in the school’s playing field?
Shhh!
I still have a vivid memory of peering out of a second-floor window and seeing my friend’s dad, who was always friendly with me, striding purposefully across the car park towards the teacher’s usual classroom. I briefly wondered why he was there. Maybe a couple of minutes later, following some muffled commotion, he emerged and headed homewards. A little later in the afternoon, I heard what had happened, and why.
If you are interested, the genesis of these kind of deliberate see-no-evil attitudes is well documented in an excellent decades-old residential care blog by “Winston Smith“.
The “welfare” philosophy of the time was that infants supposedly in the social workers’ care were not in fact children requiring adult supervision and authoritative constraints on their delinquent behaviour, but were just small adults, for whom boundaries could only be considered oppressive and illegitimate. Consequently the children’s debauchery, drug-abuse, violence and sexual excesses were indulged and enabled by their carers, making them ideal targets for sexual predators.
It’s depressing stuff.
Let the wisdom of a defiant, tantrum-throwing 3 y/o lead the way.
While that is the point of epithets, it’s not the point of ‘straight’ — assuming it did originate within the gay community. And while I am sure the boy did not intend any offense, I think it is entirely reasonable for Mr Golash to be offended because he can tell he is offensive to a normal society. A normal society would not allow him to teach children and would look the other way if he also received an afternoon visit from our host’s friend’s father.
Mr Golash, perhaps unconsciously, is aware of his own aberrance. I believe he cannot help but lash out at anything ‘normal’ because it highlights his own abnormality.
Wasn’t “square” a pejorative around that time? So “straight” as in “straight-edge” might have arisen from that, and I would not be surprised if that did come from the gay community, as a sarcasm. I think they use, or did in the 90s, “breeder” for the same purpose.
So a gay term for heterosexuals is now offensive to gays? Good grief history began yesterday for these people. I’m getting very tired of this expectation that everyone must use the language of a small minority of humans, who are getting more tedious, loud, and contradictory by the minute, and that everyone’s sexual preference is everyone else’s business.
I seem to recall that “to be square” and “to be straight” were at one time parts of the Boy Scout oath and that of some other organization.
Tom Lehrer had his usual irreverent view of scouting.
If only more parents did this. I do not understand why anyone would tolerate this for their children.
Sometimes it hurts to see someone with something you would like to have.
Which, that’s not their problem. The world is full of people who have what you don’t have. Manage your own pain.

Oh, for the sake of Pete. If that’s the case, he needs to be locked up longer because he’s extra dangerous.
It turns out that the U.S. Congresspeople are unusually gifted at playing the stock market. Astonishingly gifted. In fact unbelievably gifted.
The best performing of them exceeded the standards of return of the S&P 500 index (SPY) by 214%. Poor old Nancy Pelosi only managed to beat this market standard by 40%.
Aren’t you Yanks lucky that such gifted traders are willing to sacrifice their valuable trading time to occasionally act as your congressional representatives?
I have heard that someone has created an investment fund which tracks the trades done by members of Congress.
Trust me, they’re only acting.
Don’t much mind if someone does well while doing good but there’s not much evidence of the latter.
I think it’s that they are the small segment of people with access to skilled investors but also publicly scrutinized. We can’t see how well Warren Buffett’s personal portfolio performs, but Nancy is forced to report on hers.
Or it’s insider information.
That is, I believe, the only plausible explanation.
It is literally legal for them to engage in insider trading. They know a bill is coming up for a vote, they know how it will affect a particular industry, and they act accordingly.
People got mad at them, so they repealed the law that legalized their trading, but then they quietly put the law back.
Or at least that’s what I heard.
