This doesn’t surprise me. The incoherent statements, the lack of self awareness, they are all pretty standard. And the righteous public proclamations are just reminiscent of the Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, so the method or goal isn’t new either, though the prayer is to the God of Wokeness.
The surprise is how incredibly lame it all is. Continuously, blindingly lame. The best answer is to not engage beyond a moving containment barricade moving them out of people’s way.

Encountered very same situation in Winter Park, FL (well to do area) several years ago. Cyclist riding down public sidewalk in business/restaurant district damn near knocked over my motther-in-law. When challenged, that guy’s political statement was simply “Fuck you”.

Adblockers are your friend, which is why I didn’t get any, and rarely get targeted ads. Out of curiosity, I turned off the adblocker and refreshing the page got an ad for six pack abs (I already have a seven pack), some sort of car vacuum cleaner, some sort of tea, and a get rich quick scheme, so I am thinking there are a bunch of companies that sign up with the ad provider for YouTube, and crap just gets spewed out.

In terms of deterrence, enforcing the customary consequences for repeated and organised violent delinquency would be a big help. But as we’ve seen many times, much of the left is currently determined to inhibit those normal consequences as somehow unfair. Well, yes. And I suspect the major reason the various anti-antifa groups haven’t yet demonstrated the superiority of discipline and a cause worth fighting for is that they know they’d be fighting on two fronts.
The more I see these antifa videos the more the solution becomes clear:
Let it be known – on the sly of course – that the police will be *absent* for hours. The result would be a lot of property destroyed and defaced, lots of innocent bystanders hurt and robbed, and lots of both injuries and perhaps deaths from all factions. Though I do feel bad for the innocents hurt by this strategy, in the long run it’s the only way to make the normies mad enough about this inane clown pussies to actually do something about it.
As it is the police offer just enough of a presence to keep the proceedings ludicrous. EG the woman saying “it’s totally legal to spray someone with silly string, officer!”. This is stupid and just delaying the inevitable. Removing the police allows a proper counter response, with assault and murder on the table. It discourages all but the most dedicated antifa to show up, effectively leaving the field to those who truly wish to do battle.
Enough killing, maiming, and burning downtown businesses and the Democrat politicians who differ from the black clad children only in degree will be forced to disavow these radical elements. Of course those killing antifa will also be linked to Trump et al but the net effect is better than the status quo. You can see it on the faces of the young men on “our” side: they are ready and willing to fight – and fight to the death. Let them.
Probably everyone who has someplace to go and is impeded by these morons tying up traffic is ready to give them a spanking.

My question: Were the British police using kettling to interfere with the legitimate right to peacefully protest?
I expect that you will tell me they only used it to control violent mobs, but I’d appreciate a reality check from people closer to the events.
(Cory Doctorow is proud that his parents were Trotskyites, which made it easy to believe that the protests he wanted to assist were violent. And there were more than a few such violent protests–riots–at the time of his comments.)

No doubt it interfered, but I understand the police explained it as a crowd control tactic, to halt elements of the procession, to prevent the crowd from proceeding away from the permitted route, etc. Though it appeared to be used to corral known violent agitators who would use the crowd as cover for their antics. The police used plain clothes personnel and CCTV to track said miscreants.
A form of passive-aggressive crowd control to reduce chances for direct confrontation with agitators, combined with plausible deniability regarding interfering with peaceful protest.
N.B. I’ve no direct personal experience in this regard, from what I’ve picked up.

Specifically, when protests deviated from agreed routes with the intention of escaping police supervision in order to indulge more freely in traffic obstruction, arson, mass vandalism and harassment. Protests that stuck to agreed routes could generally be managed without such tactics.

Yes, Laurie and her peers do rather exemplify the childish moral dysfunction that informs so much else we’ve covered here. For instance, the belief, stated baldly, that if police numbers are insufficient to physically prevent you from indulging in gratuitous criminal behaviour, then that behaviour somehow isn’t criminal and shouldn’t be punished, or even complained about.

I’m not so sure. As noted above, given that they’re manifestations of narcissistic and anti-social disorder, don’t give them the supply, the NPD’s number one drug of choice. They insist on your involvement in their faux dramas; it’s why they stage them at all. You’re the target and you’re the supply.
Further, the right lost the real game long ago by concentrating not on structuralism and originalism, but on the left. The right’s instinctive reaction to leftwing lunacy is no such support, and it’s not even sufficient to shun the left back to the equivalent of the political lunatic asylum.

A lot of cyclists where I live have started cycling anywhere they like, on pavements, through red lights – trying to get to and from work at a record time. If a pedestrian says “Please could you not crash into me” these characters become more than mildly aggrieved – to the point of behaving in a not dissimilar way to our purple-haired gangsta-ette (I like the little swagger she does).
Try and reason with cycling-activists about this on the internet (where they can’t smack you) and right away they start explaining how motorists kill far more cyclists than cyclists kill pedestrians – which… well it’s exactly the style of argument I’d expect from someone who calls you a “Brexit-loving fascist bastard” when you remonstrate with them about their dangerous decision-making.
Cyclists (for some reason using the pavement) try to mow parents and kids down on the school run every day. Sometimes they’re other parents who’ve got on their bike and done a transformation much like Dr Jekyll’s. Sometimes I get stroppy with them but one has to calculate fairly carefully where the situation is heading 🙂 Finally, in Oxford, I daily watch PCSOs and council workers regularly soak up invective from cyclists surprised to find themselves fined a pathetic sum for, well, breaking the law, right?

I suspect that, in some cases, it’s much the same self-flattery – and the same consequent prickliness. I’m sure I’ve previously mentioned trips into Derbyshire, on winding country roads, where groups of these higher beings insist on cycling two, three, even four-abreast, making overtaking either dangerous or impossible, clearly enjoying this fact, and therefore doing it for as long as it can be done, often several minutes, while ignoring the massive tailback of other road users, and presumably feeling superior.
Some, of course, are very considerate and will wave drivers by when a chance to overtake appears. But not, I think, a majority.
