Today’s Words Are Churlish And Vindictive
Via Darleen in the comments, a telling illustration of “social justice” psychology:
“This is what it’s like to be a black student at New York University,” Nia [Harris] wrote in her Facebook post. “You go to a dining hall during February and you see ‘Black History Month Meal’ plastered outside the entrance. You walk inside the dining hall only to find ribs, collard greens, and mac and cheese.”
And on a campus where grievance is currency, heads had to roll:
Two Aramark employees have been fired by the food service after preparing a meal at NYU during Black History Month that was deemed racially “insensitive.” Reports suggest that the employees are African-American, though Aramark has not confirmed details about the ethnicity of the fired employees.
It’s hard to miss the class connotations of all this “woke” status-signalling. Someone who can spend around a quarter of a million dollars on attending a fashionable university feigns outrage over a menu option and then campaigns until two working-class employees are humiliated and left jobless for some sub-microscopic sin – i.e., failing to intuit the ever-changing fashions of campus “social justice” – all while the sophomore in question publicly gloats and declares her own victimhood.
Imagine the kind of utter bitch who would delight in doing that.
I blogged about this story yesterday with the same sort of take as you David, so I might as well quote myself:
“Somehow she’s the oppressed victim, a role she’ll keep playing even when she’s earning a quarter of million a year as a Grievance Officer somewhere, with money paid for from the taxes of hard-working kitchen staff.”
Clearly a hate crime.
Imagine the kind of utter bitch who would delight in doing that.
Even more vexing, I think, is to reflect on the fact that we live in a society which encourages and rewards such self-centred, spiteful people. Could you imagine the Guardian or the BBC or any of their US equivalents questioning such behaviour? Of course not. If they report it at all, it will be in their usual starchy, po-faced manner – uncritical and prissy.
And why do people pander to this nonsense? And apologise for the alleged insensitivity? Why doesn’t the conversation with the university administration run along these lines: “Oh they’re serving racially insensitive meals on campus.” “Well don’t eat them then, and while you’re not eating them, try to grow up, you little idiot”.
It’s not so much the whiny bitches that annoy me, it’s their handsomely-taxpayer-funded enablers.
Imagine the kind of utter bitch who would delight in doing that.
‘Mean Girls’ was not a how-to guide.
Even more vexing, I think, is to reflect on the fact that we live in a society which encourages and rewards such self-centred, spiteful people.
Absolutely. This narcissistic spite is actively encouraged and rewarded. Grievance is currency. And so Ms Harris gets 200 woke points and the approval of her equally narcissistic and spiteful friends, and all it cost was the livelihoods of two modestly-paid kitchen workers.
Incidentally, Ms Harris said she was “glad” that the kitchen staff were fired: “I would consider today a victory.” She goes on to complain about the “burden of teaching people how to be respectful.”
And we’ve seen this dynamic before, of course.
I’d be curious where in the country Miss Haris (who, incidentally, has offended me by culturally appropriating wipepo hair) is from.
Down here in my corner of the land of cotton one can go either to a bbq joint run by a black dude and with a largely black clientele, or to a very pale honkey run and overrun joint and get everything on the NYU menu, except that at either you might get turnip greens instead of collard, and no Kool-Aid (because they are in the business of selling soda and beer).
The simple fact is that down here in South Flyoverlandia one is likely to find that stuff in almost any place short of a restaurant that bills itself as Thai, Italian, etc. – this does not include the Chinese buffets which all seem to have that favorite of the Mandarins, banana pudding with Nilla wafers.
The point is that which has so aggrieved Miss Harris’ delicate sensibilities is not “black” food, but “southern” food, and the fact that she does not know (or pretends not to know) this merely reveals her own ignorance and reliance on stereotypes.
She goes on to complain about the “burden of teaching people how to be respectful.”
There’s irony and then there’s woke-level irony.
“Racially insensitive meal” is now a thing. A thing people can be fired for.
*bangs head on desk*
The dining hall in question is where students are encouraged to “explore ethnic foods and authentic tastes” and then, presumably, get pretentiously upset and vengeful about it.
The point is that which has so aggrieved Miss Harris’ delicate sensibilities is not “black” food, but “southern” food…
Exactly correct. I would only add that much of it was confined to the poorer segments of society regardless of race. My grandmother, who grew up in a family of sharecroppers in Alabama, cooked quite a lot of that stuff regularly, though ribs were not a staple. But hocks, beans, greens and corn bread were quite prevalent.
No more Culturally Celebratory Meals from Aramark, then? A victory for the woke.
You’ll get basic burgers and fries and feel smug about it.
That’s one delicious looking micro-aggression/hate crime. Clearly an outrage worthy of sacking two people over. *facepalms*
Aramark is a contracting company that relieves the winners in the 21st century economy of the burden of employing janitors and lunch ladies. Ewww, if you were their employer, these people would be coming to you with their stupid little problems and you’d be morally obliged to help them.
And if you get your lunch lady fired for not keeping up with current year upper class moral fashions, people think you’re the bad person. With Aramark as the service provider, you can be the heroic anti-corporate campaigner, with a very good chance of a lucrative shakedown. The lunch lady is morally invisible to you, and you can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs.
What is an inauthentic taste?
Supervillain Global Warming strikes again, killing thousands of antelopes:

(I never knew antelopes had tonsils!)
“You walk inside the dining hall only to find ribs, collard greens, and mac and cheese.”
Because those foods are very popular with black Americans.
There’s irony and then there’s woke-level irony.
If we strip away the political pretensions, you could almost think of the Clown Quarter as a kind of demented finishing school, where, instead of etiquette and good manners, students learn – and are rewarded for – churlishness, spite, and a kind of pathological ingratitude.
Global warming is not specifically mentioned in this horror story, but I’m sure it’s lurking in the background:

Clearly a hate crime.
Those french fries are a cultural appropriation.
Yes, that was easy. But no one else said it and my OCD can’t just let it be.
“Clearly a hate crime.”
Tender, delicious hate crime…
John D: “”Racially insensitive meal” is now a thing. A thing people can be fired for.
*bangs head on desk*”
I see your problem. You’re banging the wrong head on that desk.
What is an inauthentic taste?
Monosodium Glutamate.
OK, I’m done.
But to the topic, to me this is just a slice of the bigger problem of young people not being expected to go out in the world and DO something. We hold people back by emphasizing an education when much of what they get educated in detracts from making them productive citizens. Even the lazy, quite possibly this bitch included, like to make themselves believe that they are contributing to society. We will continue to endure such idiocy the longer we continue to subsidize it.
Donic educationis delenda est…or something like that.
Funny, I had always thought of fried chicken and watermelon as former luxury foods. Back in the day, chicken was the most expensive meat, so FDR promising a chicken in every pot came across as “you’ll eat like kings!” And watermelon is like a dessert food; no great nutritional value, just a treat. When even the poorest in society – blacks, at the time – could afford such eating, it meant “America, yeah, let the good times roll!”
As for ribs, to this Canuck they are a southern specialty, not just a black one. Along with certain other foods such as corn bread.
But corn liquor was for the entire republic, of course.
Farnsworth: I’d be curious where in the country Miss Haris (who, incidentally, has offended me by culturally appropriating wipepo hair) is from.
I ended up on her Facebook (or maybe twitter – I didn’t stay long) page, and I believe she is from Chicago – which may be a factor in your notion that she is unaware that what was served was a regional, rather than a racial cuisine.
so FDR promising a chicken in every pot came across as “you’ll eat like kings!”
A roasted chicken dinner was for Sunday night dinner, where you wore a nice outfit and mom broke out the tablecloth & her china.
…I believe she is from Chicago…
In that case, she is just being an ass for the sake of being an ass. Now being served at Buddy Guy’s Legends at 700 S Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL:
A large portion of the original black population of Chicago came from the South and brought their recipes with them, and are pretty common fare up there.
In case anyone doesn’t know who Buddy Guy is, and I guess who is now a racist or something.
Not just individual bitches but mobs of them.
Create it and they will
cometake it.Oy.
A large portion of the original black population of Chicago came from the South and brought their recipes with them, and are pretty common fare up there.
Just to clarify that mangled sentence, it is the recipes that are common fare, not the original black population. There are many things wrong with Chicago, but I do not think cannibalism is one of them.
a freer, safer world.
I’m sure the now-unemployed kitchen staff are feeling that right now.
“A large portion of the original black population of Chicago came from the South and brought their recipes with them, and are pretty common fare up there.”
That’s right. I can confirm that all those items are indeed common fare.
Side note: One popular combination is fried fish served with a large helping of macaroni and cheese. I never saw that until I got lunch at Chicago restaurants that had a significant black clientele.
“a freer, safer world”
Not obeying Social Justice Warriors’ commands leads to slavery and danger. Obviously.
As I reflect more about this Chicago bit of info, it occurs to me that this ninny may have shafted more than just the cooks, and as illustration, I offer an anecdote of NYC.
In my wanderings I happened to have had to work in NYC for a short time, and in the institution there was a staff cafeteria which, due to the rather busy nature of the place, we rarely got to use. One abnormally slow day, however, we got to go to breakfast, and much to my amazement they had (besides the usual inedible things like eggs), biscuits and gravy, and grits. As my teammates who were all from that general neck of the woods looked on in horror, I asked for both which shocked the nice black ladies who made and served the stuff as they allowed almost no one ever asked for it. Turns out they too were originally from my neck of the woods, and they occasionally made the stuff because they liked it.
The point is that, though there are twee mac&cheese restaurants in Brooklyn hipster enclaves, New York City and BBQ, let alone collard greens or grits, go together about as well as Alabama and quinoa quiche, so who knows how many students got screwed out of at least a facsimile of home cooking because of this clown’s selfish faux outrage ?
One popular combination is fried fish served with a large helping of macaroni and cheese.
Geeze. I must have been 20 before I learned fish could be served other than fried and without mac n’ cheese.

Image Miss Harris’ outrage if the menu included treats like jungle meat and long pig.
*bangs head on desk*”
I see your problem. You’re banging the wrong head on that desk.
I sometimes wonder what the parents must make of these vain, entitled monsters when they return home from university, after all this absurd cossetting and after having their every fever dream of persecution indulged and rewarded. Are the parents appalled, or are they at least partly responsible for producing such awful offspring?
Image Miss Harris’ outrage if the menu included treats like jungle meat and long pig.
I imagine she wouldn’t have a clue as to what they were, however, it does raise the question of just what the hell they were supposed to serve as “African-American” food that wouldn’t have been offensive to this clown.
No one at NYU except maybe an exchange student would recognize actual African dishes, assuming they could even get the requisite ingredients to make them authentically, and it is not as if “African-Americans” who were born here ever ate the stuff except perhaps on holiday if anyone actually goes on holiday to West Africa.
The dining hall in question is where students are encouraged to “explore ethnic foods and authentic tastes” and then, presumably, get pretentiously upset and vengeful about it.
Given the name of the dining hall in question, the only puzzle is why it’s still called what it is, and why the food on offer is the only thing they’re throwing their toys out for.
Spoiler: Weinstein Passport Dining Hall
R Sherman: Me too!
I hope those 2 people fired get a hefty settlement. Their menu is no different than what DOD installations all have on one day in February. If anyone knows of a petition to get them rehired, please post.
As far as MS. Harris is concerned: we want our hair back, you culturally-appropriating bitch.
Harrumph.
Are the parents appalled, or are they at least partly responsible for producing such awful offspring?
Ex-leftist David Horowitz has said that the New Left kids were usually the children of Old Left parents: The apples didn’t fall far from the trees, except to fall farther left. The commie children that I know are all the offspring of leftists of one strip or another (although some of them do pretend to be liberals.)
On the other hand, I have heard of conservative parents who are dismayed to find that college has radically changed their kids.
Seems to be mainly the rich-kid colleges—I took a couple of classes at a regular old college and everyone seemed perfectly sane.
Reminds me of the Adam Goodes incident down here in the lucky country. A 13-yr old called an Aboriginal football player an “ape” and was subject to days of hounding by every right-on wanker in the country. (She said she didn’t mean it as a racial thing.)
(If a 13-yr old murdered somebody their identity would be protected, but I swear I remember them plastering this girl’s face all over the telly.)
I got in an argument on facebook at the time – isn’t racism about power differentials? Who has more power, a 36-yr old millionaire with the backing of the press, the police, the gov’t, the AFL, and apparently the public, or a 13-yr old girl? Aren’t we just bullying a child here? And suppose she really is racist, can’t we tell the difference between her and the grand wizard of the KKK? Naturally, I got unfriended, which certainly showed me.
By the way, what “Black History Month” meal would be appropriate to this woman?
Crow.
Crow.
Cooked or raw?
Would the outcome have been different if the food was served without the celebratory label?
“Aramark has not confirmed…” They dare not do so.
When it becomes known that the fired employees were white males Aramark will be shaken down to provide “outreach” to the oppressed and hire based on ethnic distribution in the student population.
Of course, the fired workers were most likely black. When THAT info gets out Aramark will be shaken down…

That place looks fantastic! I plan to visit Chicago in the summer and will check it out.

The regular old college that is comfortable being a regular old college is likely going to be just fine. The regular old college that desperately wants to be a respected name-brand college is likely to go all-in for these SJW antics, because that’s what the administration and faculty think is in vogue.
Given their position and their aspirations, they’ll likely do it with more clumsiness and enthusiasm, too. They’re worse than the chess club nerd who mistakenly believes he has a chance at the homecoming queen.
