Make Way For The Activist-Wanker Caste
As the activist delight in vandalism and traffic obstruction has cropped up in the comments, along with their bizarre rationalisations, I thought it might be worth revisiting some earlier rumblings on the subject.
It’s interesting just how often “social justice” posturing entails something that looks an awful lot like spite or petty malice, or an attempt to harass and dominate, or some other obnoxious behaviour. Behaviour that, without a “social justice” pretext, might get you called a wanker or a bitch. A coincidence, I’m sure.
It is, I think, worth pondering why it is that these supposed displays of righteousness routinely take the form of obnoxious or bullying or sociopathic behaviour, whereby random people are screwed over and dominated, and often reduced to pleading. Pleading just to get home, to children, or to work, or to get to the doctor’s surgery. Even ambulances and fire engines can be obstructed, indefinitely, with both impunity and moral indifference. Among our self-imagined betters, it seems to be the go-to approach for practically any purported cause. Which is terribly convenient. Almost as if the supposed activism were more of a pretext, an excuse, a license to indulge pre-existing urges.
And what kind of person would have urges like that?
Update, via the comments:
The little people will mop up afterwards:
Fearless, selfless, an inspiration to us all. No wait. The other thing.
Imagine the thought process.
“Comrades, I have an idea. It’s brilliantly radical and a jolly lark. Let’s walk into Waitrose and then needlessly steal and destroy dozens of pints of milk, by tipping the contents across the floor while telling people what to do, so that someone else – someone less radical and less well-off – will have to do hours of extra work to clear up the mess before someone slips and the whole thing starts to stink. The customers and staff will be too bewildered and too polite to give us the kicking we deserve. The most they’ll do is walk us out of the store…! How heroic we will be!”
As a way to win hearts and minds, or to sway government policy, it’s not exactly promising. Indeed, the reaction of the general public tends to be overwhelmingly negative, often vehemently so, and hostility to the professed cause is, if anything, likely to increase. But as a way to indulge in some practised self-involvement, and to feel important and powerful at others’ expense, it does have potential. Expressing contempt for those deemed unsophisticated – and generally fucking people over – can be its own reward, for a certain kind of person. All that’s needed is a pseudo-moral fig-leaf.
It seems we are to be scolded by the inadequate, the confused, and the psychologically marginal. And so, the assorted cranks and monomaniacs invoke their End Times fever dreams and boast of how they “will not be stopped” by such trivia as the law, or norms of reciprocation, or common decency. Apparently, and rather conveniently, they “have every right” to vandalise whatever they choose and to screw over countless other people, recreationally and gleefully, in whatever ways they deem fit, while applauding themselves. Say, by “disrupting traffic, throwing soup, and blocking oil depots.” Verily, they have been touched by The Lord.
I suppose some people are all but destined to join apocalyptic cults. It isn’t too hard to see the appeal of the fervour and license of a new-found religion – conveniently stripped of those annoying restrictions on one’s own behaviour. Only the behaviour of others. And with Just Stop Oil, Animal Rebellion and Insulate Britain all indulging in their antisocial roleplay, the subsets of the activist-wanker caste are vying for our attention. And our deference, obviously.
Update 2:
It’s also worth noting how the activist-wanker demographic is quite defined, socially, in terms of class. We don’t see much of the lumpen proletariat, or people who are busy earning a living. But we have seen quite a few videos of upper-middle-class activists, very often upper-middle-class women, looking faintly confused, or just smug, when frustrated working-class people explain, desperately and in vain, that they’re trying to get to work, or trying to take a child to hospital.
The same, rather pointed, class divide is evident in terms of social media support and excuse-making. People who want us to know that they work for the BBC, the Guardian, and the New York Times, for instance, are much more likely to excuse the vandalising of galleries, supermarkets and petrol pumps, and to downplay the obstruction of tube trains and emergency vehicles, than people whose livings are less glamorous and perhaps more modest.
As is the custom among the activist-wanker caste, much of the behaviour we’ve seen, and will doubtless see again, amounts to a moral non-sequitur. Rather like saying, “I’m troubled by the plight of the Javan rhinoceros, so I’m going to start spitting at the elderly and keying random cars, and then boast about it on Twitter, while waiting for likes.” Hence the need to consider other, less edifying motives.
And were I feeling particularly animated about an issue, I don’t think my first thought would be to vandalise an art gallery or a supermarket, or to gratuitously immobilise thousands of random commuters, or to trap ambulances and fire engines, thereby endangering lives, all while feeling important, and powerful, and immensely self-satisfied. I don’t think that would occur to me as an obvious thing to do. I mean, the thought of people dying needlessly because the ambulance couldn’t get to them, or people consequently burning to death in a fire, would, I suspect, put a downer on any self-righteous buzz.
But hey, maybe that’s just me.
But they don’t WANT to behave like spoiled brats. We’re MAKING them do it. /sarc
But they don’t WANT to behave like spoiled brats. We’re MAKING them do it. /sarc
As noted before, it would, I think, be foolish to assume that such behaviour is indulged in only reluctantly, in desperation, or under duress. It is sought out and chosen – and, regardless of any obvious relevance, chosen rather a lot and with great enthusiasm. To quote from the item linked above:
Needless to say, the quoted piece and subsequent thread have links to other, often quite vivid, illustrations of the phenomenon.
This isn’t politics. This is recreational sociopathy.
This – and then some.
Just as sociopaths / psychopaths are renowned for using whatever means are to hand, moral or physical, to satiate their own appetites, the videos posted on Twitter and elsewhere are incredibly revealing.
Most noticeably, how gleefully they are willing to use the police and the threat of prosecution to anyone who defies while ostensibly being opposed to those very same forces of law and order (so-called).
For every three or four protestors in bright orange vests, there’s at least two camera operators carefully filming everything and making it known to anyone offering threats of violence that they will prosecute them for assault using the video as evidence.
And that’s only before the police arrive, whose protection they are seen enjoying almost whenever they appear (scenes of police carrying protestors off seem to be slow to come if they come at all).
I think it’s telling that the one time such activists got a thoroughly deserved beating from an enraged general public , the only cameras on them appeared to be from the phones of other members of the public.
That they are without exception that I have seen from blatantly privileged upper middle class backgrounds and have public school education awakens a certain kind of atavistic class hatred I think you have to be British to truly appreciate.
These people are worthless scum who may as well be literally spitting in my face while laughing at how I can do nothing about it.
I look at people impeding ambulances and fire engines.
I look at this definition.
I wonder why the Secretary of State doesn’t exercise his power under section 3(a)…
They do it because menacing other people – and spoiling someone’s day, or night, arbitrarily – is gratifying. If, that is, you’re a certain kind of person. They are, as it were, pleasuring themselves.
That.
That.
Hence the term activist-wanker caste.
Or if you prefer, The Unspanked.
But they don’t WANT to behave like spoiled brats. We’re MAKING them do it. /sarc
They are doing it, and getting away with it, because they have enough support among the media and in many parts of the administration of Government and among politicians that the response is neutered.
There is a disconnect between the significant portion, if not the majority of the population and press, the political and administrative classes. It is possibly wider than in the past and appears to be everywhere in the Western world.
From what I can see (peering eastwards across the Irish Sea), this partly explains the extraordinary ineptness and obvious unwillingness to deal firmly with these Tarquins and Poppys. It partly explains why the Government is incapable and, I suspect, unwilling to stop the criminal-controlled flotillas sailing across the channel from France. It partly explains the indulgence of the BLM protests, including the criminal damage of statues and the eagerness almost every taxpayer-funded organisation to denounce itself and destroy some of its heritage.
The reputation of the police has probably never been lower- and deservedly given their apparently skewed priorities and pursuit of people who have broken no laws.
It is hard to see how things will improve when the State has grown so large as to suffocate any counter points to its authority (through its control of the economy and authoritarian legislation) and most of those working for the State have a vested interest in the present direction of travel.
This isn’t politics. This is recreational sociopathy.

I don’t think you can blame Putin for the conspicuous failure of the police, the courts, the media, the twittersphere and even large parts of the government to condemn let alone raise a finger to stop these worthless little pieces of excrement.

That not particularly jolly but quite high-ranking copper was outside the recent Conservative Party conference where he thought he heard an offensive comment (which the actual person he alleged might have been offended denied) and proceeded to make a complete fool of himself. The full story can be found on the LotusEaters website, podcast or YouTube channel.
His career prospects will not have been harmed and arguably enhanced.
It is interesting to compare this wanker behavior, almost always by young people, to other types of protest. The sit-ins at lunch counters in the US South in the 1960s were specifically to protest black lack of rights to eat in those establishments. Protesting with signs generally does not stop ambulances from getting to the hospital. Marching does not damage property. The spite and anger remind me of a toddler who wants TV and wants it NOW! And they often want impossible things: an immediate end to fossil fuels or cars, world peace. They are frustrated by life and want someone fix it immediately, and if not, they will have a tantrum.
Further to the above: consider the Antifa riots in the US. They wanted immediate end to racism (or so they claimed) but with no details of what needed to change or how. They wanted an end to capitalism, but again, with what to replace it. Free-floating anger at “the system” which reflects I think, a belief that the universe in general is unfair and imperfect.
Somewhat related, on the severely educated.
University students…..show up at an event, dump some milk, throw cans of tomato soup, etc, and, get credit for a higher grade in your SJW 203 course. That’s why these whalers are always young, and, zealous. They will be rewarded by a cheap meaningless stunt.

If they try to block my car, I will run over them. They have no right to detain anyone for any reason.
They can take their issue up with the members of government they elect not with innocent people going about their business.
When they take it to me in the street, they will get ME IN THE STREETS and I don’t like being harassed in the street or anywhere else.

I don’t know about the experiences of other people my age, per se, but when I was younger, an expression of leftist outrage was generally encouraged or at least smiled upon by teachers and administrators and even some/many pastors/clergy. Yet an expression of similar enthusiasm for traditional values of God, family, country were either dismissed as jingoistic or were opportunities for those previously mentioned to “correct” such thinking.
Another one asking for a slap.

I was reflecting this morning on the milk-pouring. In the US, SCOTUS decision in Texas v Johnson said that burning a us flag was protected speech. It does qualify that by requiring that it be your own flag, and not on somebody else’s property. So the problem with the milk-pouring is that they did not first buy the milk, and made a mess on private property.
Then the other side of my brain said, literally, “How quaint.”
These folks, and the CHOP /CHAZ mob, and Antifa, and BLM, are not, or rarely, prosecuted, because the enforcers and reporters and their respective managements, are on their side. As is noted here every damn day.
These folks are Brownshirt NAZIs and should be called that at every opportunity.
If they block your car, remember that the guy in Charlottesville who was surrounded by a mob and panicked and drove over someone went to jail for murder.
It is interesting that they are raiding the homes here in US of those who have been picketing against abortion and arresting them (on the basis that they “blocked” entry to abortion clinics) but no arrests in dozens of fire bombings of churches and pregnancy counseling (pro-life) clinics. None. These two things are not the same. And yet we laugh that Iran has “morality police”.

glad I saw the byline “Charles Blow” so I know what is exactly in that article without ever reading it. And while it looks like he is making an backhanded excuse for the racism of Los Angeles’ “Latino” leaders, I bet some the most outrageous statements about Councilcritter Mike Bonin’s adopted black son, such comments were mostly aimed at the Bonin (gay, white) and mocked his relationship with, of, and (lack of) disciplining, his son aren’t even addressed. It would undercut his theme that all racism is really white supremacy no matter the melanin level of that racist du jour.
…I saw the byline “Charles Blow”…
Yeah, it was a tell. I don’t know the specifics of the LA brouhaha, but skimming through (because Blow, after all) it seems like a preemptive strike to make excuses and keep the grift going.

Your alleged thoughts, even. All speech and actions may be dishonestly interpreted to make you guilty of, well, of whatever they want. This is the “arc of history” that the left celebrates. And when I was a mere child conservatives were denounced for calling attention to this danger.
