As noted before, more than once, if someone’s go-to solution, every time, is to impose on others, to harass and bully random people, effectively trapping them, while feeling enormously self-satisfied about their own imagined radicalism – and while clearly titillated by the ability to dominate – then this tells us very little about any purported issue. It’s a moral non sequitur and rather like saying, “I’m troubled by the plight of the Javan rhinoceros, so I’m going to start spitting at the elderly and keying random cars, and then boast about it.” It does, however, tell us what vain and spiteful tossers these creatures are. And how low a priority their wellbeing should be.

If you read the post about Mr Gothman and his peers, linked above, it’s hard to miss the fundamental arrogance, and the casual, indeed prideful, dismissal of other people’s commitments and their need to get somewhere. Random drivers and their passengers, about whom Mr Gothman and the protestors know nothing at all, will, we’re told, be “impacted” and taught to care – by which he means made to agree with the assumptions and priorities of their self-anointed betters. He seems rather pleased about this.
In his mind, random motorists going about their business are somehow collectively guilty and inadequate, and in need of moral correction – by the enlightened and compassionate. People so enlightened and compassionate that they openly delight in frustrating others, arbitrarily, while feeling full of themselves and chanting about their own righteousness. People so enlightened and compassionate that their response to trapping thousands of people about whom they know nothing is to exult in triumph.

Having gone out of their way to create a stressful and provocative situation that will needlessly aggravate hundreds, even thousands of people, probably resulting in scuffles, they want us to know how conscientious they are about de-escalating the aggression that they themselves have caused, and have delighted in causing, and will doubtless cause again, in order to feel important.
I don’t know if it’s been mentioned here before, but I particularly enjoy the irony of the recently jailed Insulate Britain activist Emma Smart having taken up protesting as a break from her 2-year holiday touring the world in a combustion-engined 4×4 pickup truck.

The original tweets, and the activists’ accounts, have since disappeared, which is probably a good thing, but the tone of them was every bit as deranged and spitefully self-involved as you’d imagine. One self-styled ‘activist’ complained that the photos had been removed under protest and only because of “transphobic” comments that made them, the stalkers, feel unsafe – i.e., comments about how it’s a bad idea to post someone’s home address on a social media platform for an audience of psychologically marginal people.
It seems that if you’re trans and a creepy stalker with mental health issues, and if you amuse yourself by doxxing people with whom you disagree, thereby endangering their families, then your own behaviour should never be questioned. Lest it make you feel bad.

There’s a number of US states that have done exactly that in response to these kinds of protests; I forget which one explicitly wrote the law that allows driving over someone trying to block your legal egress if you’re in a car.
Also, Lakehead U is one of many universities in Canada that exists solely as a sop to the Indians in remote areas. They’re a joke, nobody takes them seriously. They started out as a program to provide post-secondary education to remote communities but they’ve been completely taken over by the Indian grievance industry. While it’s true that this particular program is a $1.2M grift, it’s more relevant that the entire university is an even bigger grift.

Speaking of insulating homes, I heard from a relative in Germany that the German experiment with ultra-insulated homes went terribly wrong: condensation leading to mold, indoor retention of pollutants, etc. Never bothered to investigate myself, but the disappearance of enthusiastic mainstream news articles leads me to suspect my relative was right.

I certainly agree about solar, but I think you’re wrong about insulation: As normally practiced it does pay off. The chief exception would be owners who do not keep their homes a long time.

I’m surprised that there are any houses left to insulate in UK (except the ones that can’t be). The campaign has been going on for at least 50 years to my knowledge.

Insulation is important to us. We’ve lived in our 2,000 sq. foot house in Hershey for 21 years. When we moved in, the insulation in the attic consisted of 3 inches of rock wool. The room above the bonus room (built on top of the first floor) had a layer of pink fiberglass.
Over the next few years, I added two layers of insulation over the first floor and another layer of insulation on the smaller bonus room. We also bought a thermostat with a timer so the house can cool down overnight and heat up just before we wake up.
We kept track of our oil usage and the price per gallon. The first year, we used 416 gallons. The second and third it was 382 and 392 gallons.
After that, once all the insulation was in, it ranged between 183 and 346 gallons, with a 14 year average of 285 gallons (the wife hadn’t added the figures for 2018/2019 and 2019/2020). Up until 2017, we never hit 346 (well, 345 one time).
It’s hard to figure out the savings over time — I’m a moron about this — but over the first three years we average using 396 gallons a winter. Over the next 14 years, it averaged 285 gallons. That’s 1,554 gallons of oil (about 5.4 years). At an average of 3.02/gallon (ranging from 1.45 in 2003/2004 to 9.953 in 2013/2014, that comes to $335 we did not spend.
That doesn’t sound like much. How much would we have spent had I not insulated? Hard to tell.
One hidden source of savings is that the furnace didn’t have to work as hard over the past 20 years, and that should extend its life. It’s been in the house since 1986, and the furnace guy said when it goes, it’ll be replaced with one that won’t last as long.

Spending money for that return is illogical for most people and should be regarded as illogical by any sane government. It is wealth destruction on a massive scale.
If Governments were serious about zero-carbon* and not in thrall to a doomsday Green ideology, they would prioritise nuclear power. People would move away from oil and other fossil fuels but at least the replacement, electricity, would not be ruinously expensive and society could continue to enjoy the benefits of abundant and reasonably cheap energy.

Many of the eco fanatics of the sixties and seventies openly longed for a return to a pre-industrial civilization. Some of them admitted that this meant universal poverty and a greatly shortened lifespan. Others clung to the delusion that it would be possible to keep modern medicines, sanitation, and so on.
Come to think of it, there’s nothing wrong with helping those fanatics to live zero-carbon lives: Round them up and march them into the countryside to spend their lives doing agricultural labor. Put them in tiny huts, heated by wood fires in winter, and feed/clothe them the way the poorest peasants were so long ago. It’s what they want, right?

I suggested this here years ago. Either a wilderness preserve or preferably an island. People objected. Some did math and said there amount of land that I proposed was clearly insufficient to support such for even a relatively small population. Personally I didn’t see that as my problem. It was about that time that the helicopter theme presented itself. Admittedly for different reasons. Though I still think we could combine the two solutions and be able to work something out. Think of the TV revenues. Might even squeak out a profit if properly marketed.

Interesting. I was not clear on Insulate Britain’s demands, whether they were complaining about un-insulated homes or were demanding some bizarrely impossible degree of insulation. Didn’t care much; it was enough to recognize that they were assholes.
