This Thing Is Powered By Cash
Patrons are reminded that this shimmering oasis is made possible by the kindness of strangers. If you’d like to ensure it exists a while longer, and remains ad-free, there are three buttons below the fold with which to monetise any love. Debit and credit cards are accepted. If what happens here is of value, think of this as a chance to show it.
If one-click haste is called for, there’s a QR code in the sidebar, at which you point your phone, and my PayPal.Me page can be found here. As requested, I’ve added SubscribeStar and Ko-Fi accounts, via which love may also be monetised, whether as one-off donations or monthly subscriptions. Should you be gripped by an urge to express encouragement via currency, by all means succumb.
Additionally, any Amazon UK shopping done via this link, or via the button in the sidebar, results in a small fee for your host at no extra cost to you.
For newcomers wishing to know more about what’s been going on here for the last eighteen years, in over 3,000 posts and 200,000 comments, the reheated series is a pretty good place to start – in particular, the end-of-year summaries, which convey the fullest flavour of what it is we do. A sort of blog concentrate. If you like what you find there… well, there’s lots more of that.
Do take a moment to poke through the discussion threads too. The posts are intended as starting points, not full stops, and the comments are where much of the good stuff is waiting to be found. And do please join in.
As always, thanks for the support, the comments, and the company.
Oh, and consider this an open thread.
Stephanie, from the previous thread:
Time to roll out this Christopher Hitchens classic:
More respect than love, but ping.
A little something for the new bar towels fund. Ping!
Uncle Fester in Paris.
Morning, all.
Bless you, sir, and bless you, madam. May all of your toenail clippings be accounted for.
I’m not sure what effect they were going for. “See how perverse, and therefore sophisticated, we are”?

Which calls to mind quite a few of the artistic endeavours featured here over the years, during which the motives of the audience – why they were there – proved more intriguing than any aesthetic experience supposedly on offer. And during which, in order to feign discernment, one has to not discern any number of rather obvious things.
Same energy.
Also ping.
Oh yes. I’m guessing they feel they’re affirming something, and by extension, themselves.
Bless you, madam. May your neighbours know how to park less than a metre from the kerb.
“Our betters”…
*ping!*
I’m going to need a moment to process that one.
Bless you, sir. May your farts escape detection.
It’s a New York City vibe, man.
That applies to a lot these days.
Ker-ching!
Time to add some defensive measures.
That would be entertainment, right there.
Not enough bouncers are women. Something must be done!
Pinged
I read this article with relish – here, have a free link. I have always said Gloria *smell of brimstone, stamp of cloven hooves* Allred is a stain on the legal profession.
Bless you, sirs. May all of your Bluetooth devices be fully charged and suitably communicative.
Because you’re trying to fix a software problem by smashing up the hardware.
Poor Choices, a play in two acts.
Act I
Act II
I suppose the question is whether any rethinking of assumptions will ever occur.
I wouldn’t put money on it.
Some women are born with abnormalities, therefore I am a woman.
A study in mansplaining.
It occurs to me that the ‘trans’ people I’ve seen who seem well-adjusted, all things considered, are the ones who understand, and will admit, that they are not in fact the opposite sex, much as they might wish it.
Appreciate what you do, David. Consider your tip jar hit.
Cheers, barkeep. 👍
“Unhinged hospital greeter”
Bless you, sirs. May the best-before date on your nectarines not be wildly misleading.
And thanks to all who’ve chipped in so far, or subscribed, or done shopping via the Amazon link – including all those much too shy to say hello. I sometimes forget how many of you are lurking in the bushes, being very, very quiet.
It’s much appreciated and is what keeps this place here.
Much like the kids who have adjusted to the fact that they just don’t have what it takes to become scientists and astronauts, and instead of pretending that “society” is conspiring to keep them down, they adjust their goals to fit their actual talents.
I’m thinking of, for instance, Marcus Dib, Buck Angel, or Diedre McCloskey. I’m not sure we’d agree about everything, but I think it would be possible to have a fairly realistic discussion without the usual histrionics, tip-toeing, and transparently self-serving preconditions.
“teen trends”
The words so far.
If she’s really not on drugs then she is insane enough for an asylum.
I hope “because de-banked” never becomes the reason.
Question asked. Obliviously.
Looks like X is on the fritz.
Looks like the fritz was temporary.
Was it a magic bus?
“I ain’t on drugs.”
Guurl, if this is how you are sober, I wouldn’t wanna admit it.
Question asked.
The answer being there are no males writing for The Atlantic. See also this chorale group down under.
Heh. A couple of weeks ago, I was chatting with my brother-in-law about people who don’t seem to understand the concept of the affectionate dig, or its social uses. You’d think that the fact Mr Vance has been reposting the memes might be a clue as to the sensibility in play.
Or not.
And given the typical content of that particular publication – including the championing of hypocrisy and antisocial behaviour, claims that crossword puzzles are “one of the systemic forces that threaten women,” and a woman oppressed by crumbs – perhaps we shouldn’t expect too much.
I asked Grok an obscure AutoCAD question and I think I broke X.
[ Ugly rumblings. ]
“Beating fascism.“
Regarding which.
Further regarding on the fritz.
An oasis indeed. Have one yourself, barkeep.
Bless you, sir. When cracking eggs into a bowl, may the results be entirely free of shell.
