This Thing Is Powered By Cash
Patrons are reminded that this shimmering oasis is made possible by the kindness of strangers. If you’d like to ensure it exists a while longer, and remains ad-free, there are three buttons below the fold with which to monetise any love. Debit and credit cards are accepted. If what happens here is of value, think of this as a chance to show it.
If one-click haste is called for, there’s a QR code in the sidebar, at which you point your phone, and my PayPal.Me page can be found here. As requested, I’ve added SubscribeStar and Ko-Fi accounts, via which love may also be monetised, whether as one-off donations or monthly subscriptions. Should you be gripped by an urge to express encouragement via currency, by all means succumb.
Additionally, any Amazon UK shopping done via this link, or via the button in the sidebar, results in a small fee for your host at no extra cost to you.
For newcomers wishing to know more about what’s been going on here for the last eighteen years, in over 3,000 posts and 200,000 comments, the reheated series is a pretty good place to start – in particular, the end-of-year summaries, which convey the fullest flavour of what it is we do. A sort of blog concentrate. If you like what you find there… well, there’s lots more of that.
Do take a moment to poke through the discussion threads too. The posts are intended as starting points, not full stops, and the comments are where much of the good stuff is waiting to be found. And do please join in.
As always, thanks for the support, the comments, and the company.
Oh, and consider this an open thread.
Yes, that’s what I recall, too. He was a good writer; pity so few of his books are still in print.
Speaking of which, what are the British equivalents of these, er, “beverages”?
No. All men think they can sing. Even when they know they can’t.
Given the purported technological level.
It’s technology – and not very advanced technology – that made slavery uneconomical in much of the world.
Some brand of cider if I remember Dalrymple correctly.
When I was in Jr. High, I was addicted to Bionic Woman. I thought Lindsay Wagner was the best actress evar and couldn’t understand why she was thereafter relegated to Lifetime and Hallmark channel movies instead of getting buried in Emmys.
They were 1970s prime-time shows, so YMMV.
[ Does bionic noise. ]
Brace yourself.
Pro-tip: The cheaper, the nastier the booze, as you water it down the patrons seem to enjoy it more. They don’t puke it up as often either. It’s a real win/win.
That’s awful. But was it awful enough for MST3K?
Swap whatever the Cisco is for Boone’s Farm and we got a Suzie’s Parents Are Out Of Town par-tay.
Thunderbird!!
Name of my first dev project after uni. I had a bottle of TBird on my lab bench until some admin type spotted it. “No booze allowed” or some such rot.
Boone’s Farm Apple Wine, iirc.
Of all those mentioned, the only one I’ve tasted was Boone’s Farm.
“The judge did detain Frizell, noting that he was on pretrial release for two other matters at the time of the robberies.”
You’d think that would be a strong reason to lock him up, but this is Chicago….
Did I mention Bigfoot?
I’m sure I mentioned Bigfoot.
You know, for all the money they spent making her bionic, you’d think they would have fixed it so she didn’t run like a girl. You know, the mincing hand and arm movements.
David’s first link her hair was so flat and her mannerisms such that she reminded me of Jan from The Brady Bunch. Also, screw flying cars. I wanna know where my elongated-hexagon video monitors are.
There were some great shows for ten-year-olds. In addition to Lost in Space, There was Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Great stuff to get the imagination flowing.
Fred the Fourth: Ah memories…
What’s the word?
THUNDERBIRD!!
What’s the price?
Thirty twice!!
What’s the action?
Satisfaction!!
It’s About Time.
In my neck of the woods it was Baby Duck and Light and Easy. Light and Easy was an apple wine which came in bottles slightly larger than a beer, which is what made it so popular. Tasted horrid though and Baby Duck was disgusting. It was made with horrid native grapes in the days before they started grafting vinafera onto north american native root stocks. Think carbonated Manischewitz without the high holidays.
Agreed!
Watched that too. Didn’t mention it because it was a comedy. I remember kids riffing on the theme song in the playground. “It’s about time, it’s about space, it’s about time you washed your face.” Cut me some slack we were 10 and under.
That brings back memories. Some of those riffs were pretty nasty. Davy Crockett and The Beverly Hillbillies come to mind.
And Daniel Boone got particularly salty and racist:
Daniel Boone was a man
Yes a big man
But the bear was bigger
so he ran like a @#$%^&
up a tree.
And we didn’t really have black people in Canada. There were maybe three in my elementary school of 400 kids and they were from the Caribbean or England.
Drink enough of that and you’ll be able to see tonight’s lunar eclipse even if you don’t reside in North America.
The teenager’s tipple.
Doggie pic for bookmark.
Alternate doggie pic.
(Mine’s from an obscure horror movie where you can see Phyllis Diller like you’ve never seen her before)
Yeah, that’s nice, but does your guitar kill fascists?
I’m just going to assume that clip is what was played at the Emmy Award presentation ceremony.
^Please note that in my above post, I have calibrated my expectations based on current award nomination records (13 Academy award nominations! Most ever!)

Regular hexagon is the best I can do for you right now.
[I]s legally considered a sparkling rat.
Heh. I will never forget that day in kindergarten. My buddy Roger didn’t say washed, tho. A legend lost to time…
Directed by Richard Donner. Huh.
Y’know, you’d get more horsepower if you’d feed the hamsters Purina hamster chow.
