Given the self-satisfied ignorance on display – or malign perversity – I’m guessing Dr Kotsko doesn’t live in a neighbourhood rapidly being enlivened with Congolese and Somali borra gangs, whose social skills, and machetes, are so much in the news here.
Of course, it’s much easier to be dismissive of rapidly changing demographics and to disdain expectations of cultural common ground if your own immediate neighbourhood hasn’t yet been enriched by gangs of machete-wielding sociopaths, or by people butchering animal carcasses in the back garden, or newcomers struggling with the concept of electricity, or getting lively in the name of Islam, or just shitting on your doorstep, as happens in some of the more vibrant areas.

I’m not really bothered by the racial impact of mass immigration. I don’t give a damn about miscegenation or birth rates or any of that rubbish. What offends is the cultural assumptions its white left wing advocates try to push.
Cuisine often represents a sort of synecdoche for what the left appears to believe in general. What came before in the past was monotonous and boring where it wasn’t identifiably objectionable. There’s less and less understanding that immigrants at their best enhance what was already pretty good. The sense increasingly is that Western countries were actively at fault for being majority white and people on the right side of history are rectifying that.
It’s very hard to know what one should expect of immigrants in terms of integration. I myself despise association football, the BBC and the NHS, which plenty of people would regard as touchstones of being British. When I see a non-white face pleased to see England win at rugby or cricket I’m always delighted, but I’d never want to enforce the Tebbit test.

re: comments above, the predominant religion in Naperville is Catholic. The great majority of single-family homes cost between $400k and $750k. A quick look suggests that Naperville is an upscale predominantly white community with low crime and poverty rates and a fairly fixed demographic.

Dr Kotsko’s claim of ‘Hey, just kidding!’ might seem less squirmy and disingenuous if many of his peers weren’t basing their status and careers on framing “whiteness” as a pathology, something to correct and atone for, and attempting to inculcate pretentious racial guilt among pale-skinned students. It might also seem less squirmy and disingenuous if much of the left-leaning media, from Salon to the New York Times, weren’t all but fixated with framing “whiteness” and “white people” as inherently oppressive and dysfunctional, with articles claiming the US will be “saved” by being “less white,” with white people reduced to a fringe minority – and claiming that “white men must be stopped” because “the very future of mankind depends on it” – deemed worthy of mainstream publication.
And it might seem less squirmy and disingenuous if Dr Kotsko hadn’t himself spent quite a bit of time framing “whiteness” as a defect, a lamentable pathology, one with “a stranglehold on power,” and which “exists solely to legitimate the subordination and exploitation of other races.”

But in order to badmouth whitey and thereby posture to his peers, our educator seems happy to, as they say, erase any members of a racial minority whose views diverge from his own.

This was visited here recently but I can’t find the link right offhand, which is embarrassing because I posted it, but in Orwellian fashion people who either want to be disabled, pretend to be disabled, or deliberately maim themselves are not “transdisabled”, but “transabled”.
People who look askance at them, or suggest they seek help, to include the genuinely disabled, are, of course, bad, bad people.
