A Harvard-educated sociology professor named Crystal Fleming – whose areas of expertise include “critical race theory” and “mindfulness and spirituality” – wishes to share her wisdom. Specifically, that we shouldn’t judge people who smash the windows of local stores and loot multiple pairs of trainers while the owners of said stores are distracted by an oncoming hurricane.
And if you don’t understand why Everything Is Racist, Including You™ and why looting local stores for half a dozen pairs of expensive fashion items is therefore totes okay, it’s “very, very sad.” You see, “white supremacist racism” is all about “hoarding resources.”
She may have attended Harvard but looking at some of that drivel I’m tempted to argue that she wasn’t educated there.

If you poke through Dr Fleming’s Twitter feed, the term race-hustling monomaniac springs to mind. Also, moral imbecile.
And it’s hard to avoid the implication that, according to our mistress of “critical race theory,” the people who’ve chosen to exploit a natural disaster to indulge in a spot of looting – for fashion items – are somehow devoid of agency. As if the thieving and vandalism were not only immaterial – even to the people whose businesses have been robbed, stripped bare and vandalised, on top of everything else – but in no way a choice.

Despite the awful consequences, railing against a hurricane, a force of nature, is pointless. But there’s still something dismaying about watching people exploit that tragedy in order to prey upon their neighbours. Because they think they deserve six pairs of designer trainers. But being so enlightened, and so severely educated, Dr Fleming seems to think we shouldn’t be at all concerned with what that says about the people doing the looting, and how they see others.

I was lucky to have power through the storm but sat tv dropped in and out. Thus the news was the only practical thing to have running. Football and movies were too frustrating to follow. What was particularly grating was that practically every time the media reported this story, the warning that “the authorities” would be prosecuting looting to “the fullest extent of the law” this was followed by “as will be done with price gouging “. Because of course. What was really cute was when one anchor woman emphasized “anyone even thinking about price gouging”. Heh.

I suppose it’s a feature of Dr Fleming’s chosen environment. In that, most of us have said dumb things at one time or another and have possibly been challenged by our peers as a result. There’s little, if any, mechanism for correction.

So, it’s not enough to merely criticize bourgeois values. One must advocate for their antithesis. Wherever he is, George Orwell is feeling pretty smug right about now.
I often see the argument that the United States was on theft and murder of Native Americans with the aid of enslaved Africans. Those making the argument seem unwilling to acknowledge these practices were not exclusive to Europeans and so not solely the purview of evil white people.
What’s interesting to me is that the folks making the argument also never seem to grasp that they themselves are beneficiaries of these acts for which they try to condemn all white people. Has Professor Fleming ever considered that she is living on that “stolen” land herself? Or that, assuming she’s a descendant of slaves, she might not have been born at all if not for the practice? Being an American offers numerous privileges only dreamed of in other parts of the world. For good or ill, the history of the United States facilitated where we are now. It’s odd to see a person condemn others for actions of people in the past while said person is simultaneously enjoying the same benefits.
On the other hand, introspection sounds like a lot of work.
Prof. Fleming is not averse to the ‘hoarding of resources’ for herself. Her Twitter page identifies her, inter alia, as a Speaker and gives the contacts for Bookings and her Agent. I guess she can justify her bit of $$ hoarding? (Assuming anyone actually does pay her for speaking.)

Here in Canada, we have a large lake named “Great Slave Lake”. It’s called that because its shores were the highways for the native slave trade before the British Empire showed up and put a stop to that.
