New students at Pomona College, Claremont, California, were welcomed to campus with posters in their dorms… stating that all white people are racist. The signs state white people should “acknowledge your privilege” and “apologise if you’ve offended someone,” adding that offensive language includes words like “sassy” and “riot,” which are “racially coded.” “Understand that you are white, so it is inevitable that you have unconsciously learned racism,” it asserts. “Your unearned advantage must be acknowledged and your racism unlearned.” Further, the poster claims that white people should “just listen!” rather than explaining their own perspective.
Don’t talk back. Dialogue is oppressive. Unilateral racial scolding is where it’s at. Because, for people of pallor, your very existence is something to atone for – and no-one would ever take advantage of free hits. After much “unlearning,” and suitably chastened and humiliated, you will then take your place in the new and glorious progressive pecking order.
…and this is what many don’t get. In order for there to be a reasonable, egalitarian grounds for racial understanding, it has to be *possible* for raving racist lunatics to either exist on both sides or neither. Zeal for policing the tone of the ostensible right – to the exclusion of everything else – leaves the creeping impression that the “middle ground” sought is actually tilted in the direction of favoring the *other* raving lunatics.
Gosh, it’s hard to imagine how ordinary people can’t think anyone represents them.
The only answer to these people is: ‘Just. F***. Off.’

I am old enough to remember when neither of those had any racial “coding”, so perhaps if they are now “coded”, it is because those “offended” have caused the “coding” by their behavior. Cal State Los Angeles has come under scrutiny for offering segregated housing for black students.
Under the new program called Halisi Scholars, the campus set aside about 20 spots in its 192-unit dorm complex for black students and anyone who shares similar concerns.
Communications major Aaron Rodgers is a participant. He insisted that everyone is welcome.
“We don’t want to come off as we are separating ourselves,” Rodgers said. “If you want to live in the black dorms, you shouldn’t have that fixed mindset … “Oh, I just want to live the black dorms because I’m black.’ In this whole building, there are other races,” Rodgers explained.
If you look at the bottom of the article that David linked to, it says that the article first appeared in the Claremont Independent. I went there and read the comments, and noticed one by Joel Messinger, who points out the nowhere on the poster is there any indication as to what group(s) or individual(s) created/posted the poster. He even speculates that it could have been a prank by someone at the Claremont Independent. So, there is that to consider (although, I feel that this was most likely posted by a left/regressive group, and is therefor bs.)

Maybe I’m a bit dense when it comes to university jargon, but how does that work exactly? Cal State sets aside 20 spots in the dorm for black students “and anyone who shares similar concerns.” (I didn’t know being a black student rose to the level of a concern, but again, what do I know?) Aaron Rodgers is a “participant” (which I assume means that he wants one of the 20 spots), but he says that everyone is welcome. So how exactly are these spots now “set aside”? If Aaron Rodgers (who I thought was the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, anyway, so I’m slightly confused) now has one of these 20 spots and 19 white and Asian kids show up and take the other 19, what’s Aaron gonna do?
Seems to me the entire thing about the “inclusiveness” of this Halisi program is an ex post response and rationalization by the administrators once there was a backlash and they were exposed as buffoons. As ARGH says above, that only means they’ll try the same shit next year and the year after that until no one complains anymore. At which point they’ll have what they want. In the process of rather bloody extended job hunting, what I’ve been running into is larger and larger numbers of recent coding boot camp graduates, all more and more nervously looking for the next job, all flooding the local networking meetings, and now starting to attend mini-classes on the theme of getting interviewed . . . .
At this point, way back when and with a different background, _I_’d have bloody gone for a math and accounting double major and then gone from there . . .

Not being personally familiar with conditions in Old Blighty, I can only rely on accounts of the residents. Per Dr. Anthony Daniels, rule of law in the UK has very much taken a back seat to Rule of Political Correctness. Witness Rotherham for one example.

I take the rule of law to be the restriction of the arbitrary exercise of power by subordinating it to well-defined and established laws. Central government in the UK is heavily circumscribed by the rule of law, which means that most of Mr Ecks’ suggestions would get nowhere fast.
As for Rotherham etc, the failings of a couple of local police forces don’t mean that there is no rule of law here. Hence the outcry.
@Theophrastus: Again, I’m not resident in the UK, so I’m basing my perspective on the (admittedly somewhat narrow) opinions of the writers from the area whose work I read. That said, “there’s a lot of ruin in a nation”, and my example of Rotherham was simply a single incidence. Per Daniels (aka Theodore Dalrymple) police in the UK will often not bother to investigate many/most crimes simply due to an effort to avoid paperwork. Criminal have little to no incentive to obey the law because they know there will be few, or no, repercussions to law-breaking. Likewise, the pervasive insistence on Political Correctness and the enhanced likelihood of both bureaucratic and community interference in criminal investigations reduce the incentive and ability to enforce the law uniformly. We have many of the same problems in parts of the U.S. (see Detroit, Chicago, the Clinton (crime) Foundation, etc).
Rule of Law, as I understand it, is supposed to mean uniform enforcement of the law against all mentally competent adults, regardless of social position, race, sex, etc. Which standard *no* country perfectly achieves, but some have historically come closer than others. I see more and more Western countries slipping further away from that standard every day, hence my question above. Relying on Rule of Law seems, to me, to be becoming an ever more naive position. Alas.
I do agree that Ecks proposals, emotionally satisfying though they might be, will not likely be adopted in the West, regardless of the degree to which any given Western country adheres to the Rule of Law.

For a country that doesn’t take much account of the rule of law, you have an awful lot of people in your prisons.
Now either your police do hunt down and prosecute criminals, or they are sticking people in prison for effectively political reasons. Since those people seem to be overwhelmingly black, then presumably the BLM people are more or less correct — that blacks are prosecuted for the offence of being black.

All politicians in power for a long time break laws — Reagan, that great right wing saint, broke plenty (but it’s alright, because he “couldn’t remember” selling arms illegally) and GW Bush basically ignored the laws on torture or kidnapping (but when he broke the law, that was OK because Republicans love the US and so they break the law for the right reasons).

The US is a big place, and there’s a lot of ruin in a nation. We have less rule of law than we used to, and I don’t see that trend reversing. Some parts are worse off than others. As for the prison populations, I don’t see that as relevant. I see rule of law breaking down as people are NOT sent to prison, or are released earlier than they should be, or as prosecution becomes too arbitrary. And calling the condemnation of the Clintons “tiring” doesn’t actually address their criminal histories, bribe taking, rapes, rape cover-ups, framing of videographers, running the State Department as a pay-to-play get-rich-quick scam, etc. Though given Hillary’s! latest health issues, *she* certainly seems to be tiring.
