Peterson’s experience is not the first time. Back in the early ’90s, I went to hear Preston Manning speak in Grant Hall. We had to push our way through the mob to get into the building and, during the talk, the mob began pounding on the outside walls and shouting in an attempt to drown out any discussion inside. The police had to escort us out when Manning had finished speaking. No action was taken against the mob, even when they started pushing and shoving police officers.
Of course, the cowards in the University administration, including the Principal, never said a word about this behaviour or discussed what freedom of speech or thought actually means to a university.

Undoubtedly, some of the cohort above are the pure thugs, who would care why people were engaged in fisticuffs or vandalism, as long as they have an opportunity to drink a few pints and join in. In other words, they’re indistinguishable from a couple of plane-loads of English football fans in Brussels.
I would imagine most are those very young, very ignorant, yet serious, furrowed-browed students who’ve been told by some worthy that a “bad person” is afoot and must be stopped. For them, it doesn’t matter whether the “cause” is Jordan Peterson’s philosophy or “Liberate Petsamo” as long as someone with tenure has assured them of “woke indulgences” if they participate with appropriate vigor.
The most dangerous sub-cohort is the smallest. In fact, most of them were probably not in attendance or were safely inconspicuous on the sidelines somewhere. These are the instigators who know full-well that Jordan Peterson is not what they claim he is, but nonetheless use him to foment anger and resentment as a means of attaining power. It’s whom we pay to educate them. These clowns, the educators I mean, are working mostly off of our tax dollars. We work to support this crap. This needs to stop. I know quite a few folks who are sending their children to college who still don’t grasp the depth of the problem, some that the problem even exists. Or how deep it has seeped into our primary education systems. Not just the public schools but the private and religious prep schools as well.

So, let me just say, “Spot-on.” I would only add that I’ve gone through the college selection process twice with the elder two progeny and now with the youngest. It necessitates involvement, most importantly in simply saying, “I will not pay a single cent to help you attend ‘SJW University.'” It’s amazing what control of the checkbook can accomplish.

I think it bears repeating that in the first video, inside the venue, Peterson is encouraging students to think for themselves and to articulate their ideas carefully, while a mob of poseurs, morons and overindulged narcissists is regurgitating slogans, blowing air horns, and hammering on the doors and windows.

I often point out that much of this foolishness happens at third-tier Canadian universities in backwoods (sometimes literally) areas, where academic standards are risible at best.
Queens is a top-tier Canadian university. It is one of the top three law universities in Canada. We’re doomed.

How about before we order up the Japanese Option, we simply stop funding it? There are still a few trolly stops before the full-Pinochet end of the line. I get the feeling, as always I may be wrong, that many are afraid to try these measures out of fear of ridicule from the left (yet what has become more ridiculous than the left and NeverTrumpers/NeverBrexits?) and/or that the measures won’t work and we’ll be that much closer to full-Pinochet. Personally, I don’t think things need to go that far. Dry up the government funding for this nonsense and it rapidly becomes unsustainable. But it’s not going to happen if people are so afraid of speaking up.

Well, I think it’s important not to lose sight of just how self-indulgent and self-flattering – and how pathological – such behaviour is. It speaks to a person’s character. Maybe it’s a lack of imagination on my part, but I struggle to imagine feeling entitled to in effect lay siege to a venue in order to silence and intimidate a speaker I disagreed with, but about whom I knew little, along with any random person who was hoping to hear him. And while comfortable in the assumption that I could act with impunity.
O_o Let me clarify. I’m not advocating for the Pinochet Solution (because mass murder). I just don’t see any way back from the current state of affairs to a functional society predicated on personal property rights and the rule of law.
Per the Japanese Option, my understanding is that because all Japanese universities are publicly funded and run by the government, “stop teaching non-STEM” == “stop funding non-STEM”. So that’s the same thing. But in Canada at least, cutting the funding is a non-starter. There is no way any government could get elected on a platform of cutting all public funding to universities teaching non-STEM subjects, because that would also have to include eliminating student loans for any non-STEM subject. Professors, students, potential students and the teachers’ unions are too large a voting bloc. They control the province of Ontario.
Further, the NDP has been elected to provincial governments multiple times in my lifetime, despite being openly socialist-to-Communist and utterly destroying the economy of every province they’ve ever run.
The government(s), federal and provincial, the electorate, and the educational system are thoroughly socialized. There are no political institutions capable of correcting this. It’s Venezuela or Chile at this point.

Slightly off topic, but this belief system we mostly seem to have such that education is something you acquire in a great big large chunk at the beginning of adulthood and then no more or trickle off is probably not very healthy for society as a whole. Either way stopping this nonsense is not impossible.

Not likely. The Maritime provinces have been “welfare queens” since time immemorial. The prairie provinces were the resource-extraction-based economic engine of Canada for decades, but between the federal government cancelling any pipeline projects to get the oil from the middle of nowhere to a coast and the province of Alberta accidentally electing an NDP government seethingly hostile to private enterprise in general and oil drilling in specific, the economies of the prairies have cratered. I don’t see how the universities can continue down the road they’re on now. As we saw with the Portland State mob, when you have actual evolutionary biologists shouted down because, “those women have been brainwashed,” then there really is no hope. The solution lies in separating the hard sciences which rely on scientific method, skepticism, evidence, etc. from those which favor the SJW “flavor of the month” inspired by whatever crosses the mind of the English department faculty. Theology began leaving the university in favor of stand-alone seminaries with the Enlightenment. As has been noted previously, the whole intersectional, SJW basket is now religion which brooks no heretics. Universities cannot survive in the current climate. Either science becomes a pale reflection of its former self and embraces SJW Lysenkoism or it perishes, unless it flees the “modern” academy.

A pack of protesters passed my office one day two years ago. They were protesting against the protesters who didn’t want a mosque built in the town. They engaged in loud, nasty chants relating to “nazis” and “facists” all the way. I remember thinking that if any of them encountered the real thing they’d poo their pants.
As it turned out my 11am clients were late, held up by streets blocked FOR those protesters. They had with them their four year old daughter who spent the hour in tears. The close up encounter this Indian, MUSLIM family had with the supposedly pro-Muslim protesters had terrified their little girl.
I have no doubt the noise makers were as proud as punch with their antics.

There was a time when thoughts like the following would enter my head but I would have the discretion to edit them out. Not so much any more…
JP is a very smart man. A very well educated man. A fine man. As demonstrated recently in the infamous BBC interview, a very calm-in-the-face-of-confrontation man. He is very much like the kind of men, doctors and such, with whom I predicted…well not EXACTLY this sort of thing but kind of this sort of thing…15-20 years ago now. In very calm, quiet manner these men explained to me that my concerns were, while not exactly troubling, but concerning to them. Suggestions that perhaps I was taking these things much, much too seriously. Political correctness and such were things to laugh at because these things generally just sort themselves out. Magically. By other people. Not sure as by what people, nor was whatever process fully explained to me. But after all, it always has worked out, yes? So when I see JP, or similar, expressing concern that someone showed up at one of his lectures with a garrotte (really, now…isn’t such really just a piece of string? Why the alarm?), or similar, I feel the urge to speak with them, in a calm, quiet tone mind you, about their possibly exaggerating the degree of appropriate concern.

Thing is, if your so-called learning environment either tolerates or encourages delinquency, intimidation and overstepping normal boundaries, and then applauds these things as righteous and heroic, such that hatred and hysteria become in-group credentials, then it’s hard to say where the obvious upper limit of misbehaviour is. Those who fantasise about using garrottes and other weapons – even if it’s as yet only a fantasy – aren’t miles removed from a wider peer group that’s learned to exult in mob thuggery.

Given the rest of the details in the description of the event, I can’t be certain that the protestor didn’t mean to use the garotte on herself. She would appear to have issues.
WTP is only partly right about JP. Peterson knows what is happening to the University and he places himself directly in the line of fire and takes the heat to serve as an example of the sickness sweeping the culture. Charles Murray is another academic who does this. Both are courageous men.

To be clear, I mean no disrespect to JP himself. For all I know he’s been on top of this BS as long as I have. And consider all the normal citizens who would march in the streets but are afraid of just being called bad names let alone losing friends or jobs.
So the normies and the rest of us sit back and let peoplekind be literally, physically pushed into shit because we lack the will to see vandals, instigators, invaders, and traitors expelled, imprisoned, and deported.
We normals sit back and allow this nonsense because almost all of it happens at a distance. I don’t go out of my way to walk around university campuses looking for Angry Studies majors to torment, and conversely, they don’t show up at my place of business to give me grief.
As we’ve documented, this state of affairs is unlikely to remain static, and not because I’m filled with an urge to attend lectures in the Angry Studies department. When regular people see the shrieking purple-haired gender-confused harpies invading their personal spaces, when they’re close enough to feel the spittle-flecked rage at first hand — that’s when we see the preference cascade come crashing down.

I can’t tell if you’re being facetious. This is a garrotte. They’re easy to make, too; some hardwood dowelling and some 250lb nylon fishing line will do it. The point is that unlike a baseball bat, a garbage can lid, or similar improvised weapons of opportunity, making and carrying a garrotte implies unambiguous malevolent intent. When I say it’s an assassin’s weapon, that’s not hyperbole: it is useless for any purpose other than murdering someone from behind.

If attacking elderly academics, putting female professors in the hospital with spinal injuries, smashing up public businesses and gang-beating pedestrians in full view of completely apathetic riot police didn’t do it, I’m curious where you think that line is.

Well given that the perp carrying it (she) “bit one of the officers and had to be physically carried into her cell as she continued to be violent. Police searched her backpack and inside they found a weapon. Commonly known as a garrotte…”, I’m fairly certain the possession of this item was posturing (internally, either in her own head for courage or as a show off to her accomplices…who themselves may have laughed) on her part. Unless she was carrying it for someone else. I can’t reasonably conjure up a scenario where a woman would, with zero element of surprise, reasonably (heh) expect to use it under the conditions both planned and as played out per the video(s). But then I have no practical experience with garrotes and thus must fall back on what I learned from Steve McQueen.

Oh, absolutely. But then much of what we see in the videos – and in the other, similar videos we’ve seen over the years – strikes me as ripe with pathology too. And again, when you’ve seen pampered students exulting in the mob dynamic while terrifying random people, or trapping a woman in a wheelchair and happily taunting her while chanting about “social justice,” or deliberately blocking the path of ambulances, or laughing as their fellow woke-lings try to smash a windscreen into the face of a terrified female motorist – because, hey, they can – then the line between posturing and outright sociopathy looks awfully thin, and easily crossed.

I’m not sure how many people are aware of the antics on campus in recent months, since Jonathan is right — this isn’t deemed newsworthy by most mainstream outlets.
I suspect that we’ll see Antifa continue its escalation of hostilities, once it grows tired of terrorizing the campus. Maybe they decide to invade a Fourth of July parade with an unacceptable Grand Marshal. Maybe they go after an evangelical church that speaks against gay marriage and genderfluidity. Maybe they follow Iowahawk to a car show.
Whatever they decide to do, I have little doubt that they’ll wind up terrorizing and probably injuring some decent Middle Americans, and in a way that the news networks can’t resist showing. When people see a group of black-clad anarchists trampling over some pretty white lady and her children, they’re going to be animated in a way that just doesn’t happen when it’s some egghead getting beaten up on campus.
Of course, I could very well be wrong. That’s always the tricky bit about unpredictable mob behavior.
