Because some things bear repeating, a few items from the archives:
On the Guardian‘s idea of debate, and the Greens in power.
Not to mention the endless manufactured congestion and astronomical parking fees, due to the council’s hostility to car ownership; the loss of tourism revenue as a direct result of these policies; countless failures to maintain simple infrastructure; and pavements overgrown with weeds to a degree that endangered the elderly and called to mind some dystopian science fiction.
And what every voter wants is a city councillor laughing at their frustration when trying to do formerly simple things. A frustration entirely the fault of said councillor’s own party and their bizarre policies. In this case, a policy based on a belief that when people go to the local dump – sorry, recycling centre – they do so by bicycle.

The travails of the modern cross-dressing man.
The Humiliations Will Continue Until Morale Improves.
You will apologise, in writing, for being competent and white.
But no, dear reader. How foolish you’ve been.
Apparently, these things constitute, not a basis for workplace success, but merely of “success in white male terms.” Which, we’re told, not only “limits white males’ ability to hear and understand others” and “dampens their curiosity,” but is also “devastating” to “people of colour, gays/lesbians, women, and non-Christians.”
You see, expectations of competence, “hard work” – and a concern for whether actions actually produce the desired result – these things are problematic and to be viewed with suspicion, and ultimately undermined. On grounds that they cause “people of colour” to “feel they are living out of context with who they really are.”

For those craving more, this is a pretty good place to start.

Tay-Tay goes from Cat Lady to Dog Mom.
Just a palate cleanser given the news of the world and a breadcrumb to find my way back to where I left off reading comments. I have a busy life, you know. I simply can’t be here all day.
I’m going to start taking roll call.

Woo hoo! Another TV series to put on my list!
Taylor who?
What, Rome or Open All Hours…?
Open All Hours. Sounds like lighter, fun entertainment than decadent, violent Rome (which I’d already heard of anyway.)
Speaking of Ronnie Barker, The Two Ronnies, the Complete Collection seems to be out of print. Only a few sellers on Amazon, only one of which has a high customer rating.
Oh I dunno. Rome has some amusing moments, especially in season one. The brothel, for instance, and Pullo’s enquiry. Or the blasphemy at sea; the al fresco shagging; the family bickering over suicide propriety and who should kill whom before the mob arrives. And Polly Walker’s Atia is reliably entertaining – again, in a faintly camp kind of way.
I never got into Open All Hours. It’s a fairly minor comedy, I think, quite slight. It has moments, and a certain melancholy air, but not something I’d dig out to watch.
There are 5.7 million registered republicans in Florida. There were 11 candidates for governor to choose from. 1.7 million showed up to vote for yesterday’s election. In Florida. That right there is a YUGE chunk of the problem.
There’s no fog this morning.
I wasn’t looking for melancholy at the moment. 🙁
Perhaps bittersweet is a better word.
I saw a few episodes as a wee seedling, and one or two some years later. My lingering impression is of gentle farce and Arkwright’s closing monologues, which are generally contemplative, rather wistful, and often addressed to God.
In terms of tone, I think it’s not unlike Last of the Summer Wine, another 70s sitcom, and may even have the same writers.
It does. Roy Clarke.
Seems as though that would lead to a rise in fly tipping, although your normal Indigenous Brit would probably spend years in prison on top of paying hefty fines were they to try it. I guess that sort of escape from local Greens councilor tyranny is only available to the migratory sort of Brit.
Nightmare fuel.
I am amazed at the expense this woman has paid for this lifestyle. But it doesn’t surprise me, not since I practiced family Law and got to see firsthand the more “alternative” of lifestyles. But at least people kept it hidden. With social media, it is not only seen but celebrated.
Added: she makes $200k a year.
Woke cocktails
[From the article] “Are we, as a society, really that far gone that we watch grown ass men play video games, Dungeons & Dragons, dress up for Renaissance fairs and Civil War reenactments, but I’m being bashed for wanting to encourage my nurturing hobby?”
I hate to break it to you, psycho mom, but all that stuff is cringe af too.
Also fun fact: the explosion of popularity of D&D, Renaissance Faires, and fantasy lit in general is because women got into it.
Cue the dour Finns.

I’m just amazed they’re asserting Western values at all.
It even said “honor based” violence is forbidden.
This came to mind:
If you’re having to explain matters of this kind, and much else besides, as if it were information previously inconceivable, then the creatures to whom you’re explaining it really shouldn’t be here.
I mean, it’s okay to admit that not every human being is fit for civilisation.
Which, I suppose, is another way of saying, it’s okay to have standards.
Some self-respect.
Regarding the above:
The mental convolutions required in order not to notice these rather obvious considerations are helpfully illustrated.

Pretty much. And yes, he loves it so much he spent millions to ensure he lives as far away from it as possible.

Somewhere on Twitter\X I found what I believe is a truism:
If you wouldn’t willing move to their country, why would you ever want them to live in yours?
Truth.
Apt comparison.

Meanwhile, in academia. Where mighty mental titans think fearless thoughts.

By the way, it’s foggy again this morning. But I’m here anyway.
It’s the bar snacks, you know. Breakfast of champions!
As someone quips in the replies, “A liar investigating a man for telling the truth.”
Or, “If you expose outrageous fraud, and if you refer to Harvard’s own research on race and admissions, we will punish you.”
See, this is what I get for being delayed by website maintenance chores.

I did enjoy watching The IT Crowd. The episode with the underground Countdown tournament comes to mind. As does the scene in which Jen discovers that smoking is only permitted in a bleak and windy area several miles from the office.
Because again, in academia and those wishing to be perceived as academics, making the most absurd and stupid arguments is how such people show how smart they are.
BTW, I see Harry and Megs are headed back your way. I sincerely wish them good luck and God speed. No, really.
