As I recall it, Amnesty responded to criticisms in about 1985 by saying in effect, “We prefer to make noises about “violations” in the US et. al. because those countries are more likely to react positively. ”
Which I translated as “because the hotels are nicer and there’s less chance of being shot.”

Same here. They had a lot of goodwill from the Secret Policemen’s Ball and similar. The branding appeared to be evenhanded, in context though even that was a stretch, between activists in commie regimes as well as those in “authoritarian” ones. So called.
In a similar vein, St. Jude Children’s Hospital is showing up in my feed begging for money again. And again I ask them, as former donors, do they support children’s gender transitions. I have even clarified that we are OK with the kind of gender procedures that may be necessary for children with malformed genitalia, whatever. We just want to know if they do gender transition on otherwise normal XX and XY children. They continue to ignore my questions.
Or, take someone with an average or above average IQ, immerse him in a culture that actively demeans intelligence, mocks effort, and tell him over and over he has been cheated. Now add government subvention and remove all responsibility.
