I’ll be busy for a few days, and so, some items from the archives:
Let’s Do It, But In A Way That’s Less Likely To Work.
In which we turn for wisdom to the Guardian’s parenting pages.
But Can You Not See How Fascinating I Am?
A tale of vomiting, tears, and unrelenting pretension.
I suppose the drama above – all that time on the verge of vomiting – is what happens when you spend your formative years steeped in the Progressive Identity Hierarchy, in which straight white woman is somewhere near the bottom, barely above the universally disdained straight white man. Inventing some modish gender nonsense – and then publicly complaining about other, less sophisticated people failing to defer to it – may boost your social standing a little. And that does seem to be what these things are very often about.
Ferris State University’s Museum of Sexist Objects.
A Guardian contributor finds her home being burgled, cue mental convolutions.
Readers may also wish to ponder the implicit conceit that the burglars – the ones brandishing carving knives – are the real victims and should therefore be spared any meaningful consequence of their own chosen actions, their own sociopathy. Because, apparently, one should sympathise with the people breaking into one’s home and driving off with one’s stuff. In one’s own car. Perhaps these are skills only available to Guardian columnists.
Consider this an open thread. Share ye links and bicker.

I suspect it may not be the last time that one gets used.
By the way, no Ephemera tomorrow. You’ll have to improvise. Or take up reading Great Novels or something.
Normal service should resume on Monday.
Something I noticed decades ago: Looking at blacks is racist. Not looking at blacks is racist.

Can’t speak for the distaff side but Mary McCarthy’s comment on Lillian Hellman does come to mind.

Accessing David’s premium liquors in the high security cellar.

Florence King’s When Sisterhood Was in Flower has as a sub-plot a fictionalised account of her time writing pornography. From that it does seem to be a soul-deadening pursuit.
Question asked:
The f*****g liars. Another one for the ThingsThatNeverHappened file…Governor Newsome claiming he was going through the checkout line at Target and was shocked, shocked to see someone walk out the door without paying. No, really. There’s video from a zoom call.
I blame pop psychology (and hippies) for a lot of the trouble. The mantra that everyone is perfect as they are, I’m ok you’re ok. Self care. Introspective focus on your feelings. Be cool. Live for now. Participation trophies. Nothing about toughening up, keeping a balanced perspective, sacrificing for your family, being a good citizen. Nothing to keep you aware that one must save because being poor and old is scary and difficult.
Last time I saw something like this was in Birmingham* around 1960.
Oh, for the love of St. Michael the Archangel, that’s my alma mater and home town. An alma mater which was at one point one of the top engineering and maths/computer science schools in the world.
This is all so tediously Canadian. We never had slavery, we never had anti-black racism because prior to 1990 we didn’t have any black people. We were the endpoint of the underground railroad. But we have to pretend we have racism and segregation and oppression just like our big brother the US, who we are just as good as but completely different from in every way.

Ah, the whisky that has been aged an entire week in used peanut butter jars, top shelf indeed.
“Shah-la, la-la-la-la, live for today….”
So, you have not yet learned about David’s private cellar and the liquor that he saves for himself?

Yes, that is the stuff aged two weeks in washed peanut butter jars.
Worse. Those qualities were to be shamed. Especially in the context of men.
David frequently asks what happened to shame…it still exists. It now applies to violations of their values. Nature abhors a vacuum. We will always have shame. It’s what keeps polite society functioning. The right abandoned shame and thus the left filled that void.
We spend millions (billions?) on psychology and sociology education yet nobody seems to learn a damn thing.
You know I can hear you, right?
I’m just going to leave this here and let you lot figure it out.

Some mysteries are imponderable, but anyone sexualizing that has major problems, and probably not just ophthalmic. As a wise person once said,

As if Gov. Hairgel would ever set foot in a Target (unless there was a planned press photo-op). And this little story is so much Gavin trying to appear the moderate as he runs his Presidential shadow campaign waiting for Biden to bow out.
But he’s not the only one responsible for the one party People’s paradise of California — the voters approved Prop 47 and 57 and, while Chesa Boudin was kicked to the curb in Frisco, Gascon remains and is endorsed by the El Segundo Fish Wrap (as they unravel into irrelevancy). Being Progressive in CA was being able to vote for the favorite “compassionate” policies to stick it to the more conservative areas of the state. Cheap moral grace over those nasty Bible-thumpers, gun nuts and MAGAts. Even years since P47 with the surge of career criminals who know the consequences of their preying on the rubes have little consequence, there is nothing to indicate the “D” voters will change. Talk to them and they are convinced non-leftists will impose The Handmaid’s Tale if they even get to set on school boards.
Newsom wants exactly what’s going on in CA to be the rest of America.
We never had slavery, we never had anti-black racism because prior to 1990 we didn’t have any black people.
Aww, but you’re excluding our noble savages. Let’s not forget our imported-indigenous hero Joseph Brant who brought black slaves (17 I believe is the number) with him when he resettled on a Crown land grant. And this was prior to the establishment of the underground railroad.
If Canada was the endpoint of the underground railroad but Canada didn’t have any black people before 1990 what did Canada do with those who reached the endpoint?
Given the discomfort her skin engenders she really shouldn’t be comfortable in it.

Wait, wth did I just watch?

Rep. Slaughter, from Chicago…
Who represents a district not known for a low crime rate.
Remember this BBC faux pas?
I wonder: Are people getting stupider? Or more shameless and in-your-face? I and another volunteer met with someone in his home for an HOA meeting, and there were gay porno DVD’s lying on the carpet. In another home there were gay S&M porn magazines on the living room tables. In two other households that I occasionally visited (to do favors for someone in need) one of the women would always be ostentatiously reading a left-wing book when a walked in. Another woman, after learning that I was not fond of unions, began wearing a giant Teamsters button.

A well deserved prank.
Somehow I think this is only going to amplify her neurosis and narcissism:
Colorado professor dresses as butterfly to fight her “climate anxiety”.
But she is a theater professor, so we cannot expect better of her.

In study of transgender patients, the frequency of personality disorders was 81.4%.
The most frequent personality disorder was narcissistic personality disorder (57.1%).
Manners haven’t survived the age of entitlement.
Is this the ‘butterfly effect’ they keep going on about?
Whatever the cause, it certainly makes a lot of people impossible to get along with.
Prance like a butterfly, whine like a turbine.
But she is a theater professor, so we cannot expect better of her.
On the contrary, as a theatre professor, the least one should expect is a fabulous costume. Her effort looks like something a child would wear in the pre-school spring pageant.
Dude. Those people are hitting on you. I learned this in high school. Honest injun.
In study of transgender patients,
Considering the source and date, might want to take that one with a salt lick.
