I have been wondering about that.
As to lower mental illness in poor countries: A UN study I read reported this for psychosis among other mental illness. A dutch study of WWII (where dutch society and hospitals were mostly intact during the war) found mental illness hospital admissions were down during the war. I would suggest that having real problems focuses the mind. In addition, during war (for the dutch) and in poor places, life is simpler (assuming you are not a refugee or being bombed). Complexity of social life is hard for people with marginal mental stability.

Amen to that. It has been noted before elsewhere that the shaggies who block roads and disrupt life for their current social-justice tingle simply have too much time on their hands. Back when I worked (as did most other people) in order to make ends meet, no one had time to go a-disrupting. Not only a modern first-world problem, but a self-satisfied, plump-bellied pastime at that.
The “biner” slang word for carabiner can be offensive to people of Mexican descent and heritage.
I think the pejorative term they are thinking of is “beaner”. IIRC, “biner” means nothing to Latinos unless the have hearing impediments. For some reason a mountaineering blog started this whole “biner is offensive to Mexicans” crap. Is there a special term for virtue signaling mountaineering aficionados who are a little thick ?
It’s regional maybe, that some climbers pronounce carabiner with a long I sound, others with a long E. John Considine or John Carradine, kind of thing. So for those in the long E camp, biner is homophonic.
