I’m so disappointed, David. 🙂
Who thinks about themselves in the third person?

“A light lunch,” I said.
“Well, one glass,” I said.

A professor has thoughts about Stalin.
“He was a good listener”, well yeah, how else do you know who to purge ?
“First, the foresight to fear a belligerent German fascism…” except for that whole Molotov-Ribbentrop thing.
“He was a good listener”,
He was also great with children, and his hair smelled of candyfloss.
He was also great with children…
I’m not sure that, “Say, I think we need to get the good generals out of the gulag, get the Brits and Yanks to send us mountains of materiel, wait until winter then put a few more divisions on the fire” is the hallmark of outstanding strategic, operational, or tactical thought, but I am not an economic professor.
…and his hair smelled of candyfloss.
Speaking of commies, found at the Hartley link from the last thread, Ode to Kim.
I must say that t-shirts with silver collared white tuxes is a bold statement as is North Korean Cab Calloway directing.
but I am not an economic professor.
I tend to think of Marxoid devotees as having much the same type of mindset found in teenagers who want to scandalise their parents with a goth makeover or an unattractive septum piercing.
Speaking of Koreans, we have an Instagram influencer of note.
Meanwhile, only three days left to prove I am not a Nazi. [BRB looking to see if Hugo Boss is mandatory] Even if it is a parody, you know somebody somewhere is thinking it.

Heh. Let me guess…
“Shall we open that second bottle?”
A professor has thoughts about Stalin.
Again, a NK defector has thoughts about western academia.
“Shall we open that second bottle?”
Subsequent events are hazy. And disputed.
There was juicy gossip. Glasses were refilled. More than that, I couldn’t say.

Two things in that story make me suspicious. In a school like that they’re stealing the calculators? And second, the kids threatening to knife him in the parking lot if they didn’t get graduation credit. Not saying those things didn’t or even don’t happen, but with the whole thing being anonymous (“MAJOR city”) it’s effectively useless information.
In other news, the Observer’s Will Hutton is still a fool.
Tour de France goes full NASCAR.
Politicians & thugs. There may be some overlap in those categories.
Speaking of Koreans, we have an Instagram influencer of note.
Said influencer has a point:
There’s an entire Y chromosome and several internal organs worth of difference between a male and a female human – a lot more difference than the phenotype characteristics of different races, yet race is sacred and immutable and sex is whatever someone feels like today?
Neil deGrasse Tyson blesses us with his not-at-all impulsive deep thoughts.
I do sometimes wonder if the chief reason the “I F*cking Love Science” people are such fans of Tyson is not that he educates people about scientific matters but precisely because he is such an arrogant pr*ck.
Meanwhile, only three days left to prove I am not a Nazi.
Could indeed be a parody, but there are a lot of very damaged people out there.
but there are a lot of very damaged people out there.
As there ever was, but we now have the ability to confirm said… damage.
And we have political factions doing all they can to create more damage and then weaponize it.
A professor has thoughts about Stalin.
Just started reading Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin. It provides some interesting insights.
If you can be transsexual you can also be TRANSRACIAL.
Lou Reed was a man before his time.
A useful consolidation of all the truths y’all need to learn to get your minds right. A fine list, yet still left off the one saying George Zimmerman, the “white hispanic”, hunted down Saint Trayvon to kill him.
Two things in that story make me suspicious.
Credit not only – no refunds. 😁
Speaking of refunds…Via Ace…this is how it’s done.
this is how it’s done
YES!
this is how it’s done
Great googly moogly, that smarmy smug ass hipster clown at the end trying to mansplain “trans”. Pretty sure he is a misogynist for getting all up in her grill, and judging from the voice of the woman, probably racist.
this is how it’s done
And the clowns are *okay* with a man exposing himself in the women’s changing room…
this is how it’s done
Unfortunately, in Clown World, the response to that righteous rant is:
“I’m sorry sir, but that was a woman’s penis you saw.”
“I’m sorry sir, but that was a woman’s penis you saw.”
Pretty much what the asshat in the white t-shirt was peddling.
What’s wrong with people?
We have a small retail/commercial plaza in the heart of our neighbourhood. It’s a bit of an eyesore but it serves its purpose. There’s a quite good bakery, a child care centre, an interior design firm, a centre for autism and a commercial gluten free desert company.
The owner has made an application for re-zoning the property to allow the development of a small seniors retirement low rise (4 stories). The area surrounding the property is single detached homes except for a development directly behind it which is condominium town houses. Well as soon as the advisory sign went up the NIMBYs went in to action. People all around the site and some not so close to the site have put up “NO re-zoning” signs.
What I find interesting is that most of the people who have put up signs have been in the neighbourhood for less than 5-years. Also, I’ve seen the plans for the development and viewed the architect’s model. It looks very nice. It certainly looks better than the plaza that’s there now. They’re building underground parking with more than sufficient availability to keep cars off the street. Though the townhouse people tend to use the plaza’s lot as their personal overflow parking lot, which may explain their concern. Because I’m sure if they tried to build townhouses in that spot today, there would be say “NO to Townhouse” signs all over the neighbourhood too.
Anyway I’ve been having some fun in the neighbourhood by telling anyone who’ll listen that anyone with a “NO” lawn sign is an ageist and that anyone who puts a “NO” sign on their lawn just wants seniors to die. It’s been fun watching heads explode. I don’t care anymore because I’m moving in a couple of months. My wife want’s to have “YES” signs made up to stir the pot.
Politicians saying the quiet stuff outloud.
Politicians saying the quiet stuff outloud.
There are some desolate, isolated islands that would make good homes for politicians who think like that.
Neil deGrasse Tyson blesses us with his not-at-all impulsive deep thoughts.
His resume screams “mercy Ph.D.,” with the implicit (or perhaps explicit) understanding that his PI would not support him for a research career.
A couple papers, on which he is in the middle of the listed authors, i.e., didn’t contribute much, and then off to the planetarium.
Every STEM faculty member has one of these.
In a school like that they’re stealing the calculators?
To pawn them, presumably.
To pawn them? TI-83 calculators?
Do they have a time wormhole to pass them back to the 20th century? Unless I read that wrong, this supposedly happened about five years ago.
Every STEM faculty member has one of these.
Maybe his grandstanding and smarter-than-thou persona is a desperate attempt to gain status and salvage self-esteem?
“[Stalin] was a good listener”, well yeah, how else do you know who to purge?
Who/whom? 😉
Stealing calculators.
You have the motivation wrong. It’s not that I want it, it’s that stealing it pisses you off. Like taking your action figure collection and tossing it in the trash round the corner.

I live across the street from the strip club in our mutual town. The owner held out until a developer offered him private-island levels of money, but when the developer applied for a variance to build high-rises the usual suspects began squawking. The local ward councilor got visibly frustrated with them, pointing out that they’d been demanding for years the city Do Something about the strip club, and now that it was going away they were protesting what it was being replaced with. The deal ultimately feel through and the strip club is still there, slowly crumbling into even more of an graffiti-ridden eyesore since it’s been closed for over a year.
These were the same people who seemed to think the local city councilor could somehow force a major chain to open a supermarket in Aldershot, it being too far to drive to the Fortinos (4 km away).
(2.5 miles in Freedom Units)
Who/whom? 😉
My Russian is rusty, I mistranslated…
“Do they have a time wormhole to pass them back to the 20th century?”
Regulatory requirements. School boards across the US mandate the use of these things. Hence the massive price, and thus value to thieves, of 40-year-old tech. Indeed, it’s the only reason they’re still being made at all. (And TI has a monopoly because nobody else can be arsed.)
In other news, the NHS is the world’s largest buyer of fax machines and pagers.
The deal ultimately feel through and the strip club is still there…
So all that glisters is not gold, solid or otherwise ;p.
Do they have a time wormhole to pass them back to the 20th century?
Yes. And here is the portal.

So what we have here is basically an education system that functions as a money laundering scheme for taxpayer theft. Not that I’m much surprised but again, it persists because our hero who reports this to us will not press the issue in a manner that will lead to change. Because fear. The dead at Normandy, Okinawa, Fallujah, Danang, Gettysburg, etc. were fools.
Meant to preface… I see TI doesn’t sell/make the TI-83 anymore so presumably it’s only the schools buying the ones stolen from schools, thus the money laundering.
Is Neil deGrasse Tyson stoned out of his mind or was he always this stupid?
The latter. He was a little puppy that Carl Sagan kept as an affirmative action project. So, like a bad copy of an annoying original. But you must accept everything NdGT says as absolute fact AND like him. Or else you’re a bad, bad racist. Even among…especially among…engineers. Don’t ask me how I know. I’m sick of explaining it.
Or else you’re a bad, bad racist. Even among…especially among…engineers.
Yes, there are plenty of engineers who are competent in their field but sh*t-for-brains in everything else. I’ve known quite a few who buy into every fashionable diversity and equity idea that comes along.
I graduated from a well-regarded technical college back in 2010 (BS in physics). deGrasse-Tyson was one of the speakers. Afterwards, I ran into two professors from within my major, who I greatly respected, sitting together having a beer at the post-ceremony reception/party. I asked what they thought of his talk and both gave every indication of despising him, though they kept their comments civil.
…or was he always this stupid?
Don’t know if the rest of you caught the reply in that thread, but I thought it too good not to share: “If the aliens are vegan, they surely would have contacted us by now to tell us about it at great length.”

What I learned on my summer vacation last week:
1) Overnight passages at sail are very dull, and the sleep deprivation will kick your ass.
2) Isle Royale is a truly magnificent place.
3) Meclizine is a wonderful drug. It keeps my breakfast where it belongs (instead of letting it become fish food) and the dry-mouth side effect encourages me to drink lots of fluids.
4) Great Lakes freighters prefer that you not get within five miles of their projected course through the shipping lanes. They don’t care how close you get if you’re abaft their beam.
5) Spending five days with no internet or cell service is tremendously therapeutic. Even though I missed you all terribly.
Isle Royale….that’s the island in a lake that has a lake in it that has an island in it…well, they tell me it goes on but I’m not much of a believer in such things.
What I learned on my summer vacation last week:
It must have been cold out on Gitche Gumee in June, no?
I’ve been out fishing on Huron in July and when the wind was blowing it was cool.
“If the aliens are vegan, they surely would have contacted us by now to tell us about it at great length.”
Yes, I laughed out loud when I read that reply.
…Even though I missed you all terribly.
Welcome back! Please enjoy these slightly lint-covered sausages. I’ve already had dinner.
Any teenaged child of mine who got a goth makeover or an offensive septum piercing would regret it.
