Our Standards Were Holding Us Back
Meanwhile, at Princeton, more “equity” in action:
The Ivy League institution announced in April that it admitted 1,498 students for the class of 2025. A full 22 percent of admitted students are first-generation college students and 68 percent self-identify as “people of colour.” The record number of racial minority admittees comes after the school removed its standardised testing requirement.
Thereby giving the best possible impression.
The university now boasts that there are no longer “minimum test scores for admission,” as “the entirety of a student’s background” will be “considered in context.” Though based on efforts elsewhere, it seems reasonable to suppose that one particular – and academically irrelevant – aspect may weigh more heavily than most.
Having signalled a retreat from conventional metrics and expectations of ability, more ground may soon be ceded. Minority faculty are also demanding the removal of questions, for student applicants and potential employees, regarding “felony convictions,” as this is somehow unfair and an affront to “racial justice.” Other demands include an “additional semester of sabbatical” exclusively for “faculty of colour,” to ease the burden of their “invisible labour” and for being “emblems and spokespersons of diversity at Princeton.” In other words, a brown-person-only holiday to compensate for all of the work time they spend invoking “white supremacy,” claiming to be oppressed, and demanding special favours in enormous lists.
Update, via [+] in the comments:
Pitzer College in California has adopted a “test-blind” admission policy, meaning that standardised tests including the SAT and ACT “will be eliminated from the admission review process entirely.” […] Yvonne Berumen, the vice president for admission and financial aid at Pitzer College, said in the press release that “The elimination of standardised test scores from our review process entirely has the potential to send a strong message about equity, access, inclusivity, and excellence.”
No standards and only 68%?
These people have no standards.
Other demands include an “additional semester of sabbatical” exclusively for “faculty of colour,”
Chutzpah!
Chutzpah!
Well, in an environment less pretentious, less accustomed to dishonesty, you’d think that demanding endless special favours, including racially exclusive holidays, might not be the ideal way to make your employer think they’d hired the best people.
“invisible labour”
Invisible talent.
I can’t imagine how opening the doors to criminal idiots could possibly go wrong in an environment sheltering large numbers of naive young females.
Grifters gonna grift.
I can’t imagine how opening the doors to criminal idiots could possibly go wrong in an environment sheltering large numbers of naive young females.
Until now, the “campus rape crisis” was a myth touted by radical feminists. Maybe the black racist left wants to make it a reality.
Other demands include an “additional semester of sabbatical” exclusively for “faculty of colour,” to ease the burden of their “invisible labour”…
Or perhaps, as affirmative action hires, they need two semesters to do anything that an ordinary, competent professor can do in one semester.
Minority faculty are also demanding the removal of questions, for student applicants and potential employees, regarding “felony convictions,” as this is somehow unfair and an affront to “racial justice.”
Maybe it is just me, but that implies they believe BIPOC BAME AAIP (except the Asians) ETC have more felony convictions that POP, which, I believe, no matter how accurate it might be, is rather racist wrongthought.
I really can’t work up any indignation. The Ivy League does not exist to teach anything worth knowing, but to give entrance to the elitist class. So who cares?
Maybe it is just me, but that implies they believe BIPOC BAME AAIP (except the Asians) ETC have more felony convictions that POP
Imagine the future: publishing a paper that a POC disagrees with might earn you a drive-by shooting.
Or perhaps, as affirmative action hires, they need two semesters to do anything that an ordinary, competent professor can do in one semester.
So that extra semester of time would be spent catching up on work? Heh…heheh….bwahahahaha!

I’m such a nice guy, always looking for the more charitable interpretation. 🙂 But yes, I agree.
The university now boasts that there are no longer “minimum test scores for admission,” as “the entirety of a student’s background” will be “considered in context.”
Well sure, that is because BIPOC BAME AAIP (except the Asians) “…are relational people of context…” and don’t learn or think like wypipo, apparently.
“…called upon to exert influence in hiring committees and to stand as emblems….”
This is a burden? I thought it was one of the demands.
“…the entirety of a student’s background” will be “considered in context….”
This could lead to incoming classes populated by 25-45 year-olds who have “amazing” lived experiences and “astounding” potentials despite years of unproductive idleness and menial employment, and semi-literacy.
I get that Princeton is the epitome of white supremacist elitism, but isn’t that exactly why all of these BIPOC folks are seeking to join?
Other demands include an “additional semester of sabbatical” exclusively for “faculty of colour,” to ease the burden of their “invisible labour” and for being “emblems and spokespersons of diversity at Princeton.”
How can they be “emblems of diversity at Princeton” if their off on sabbatical and thus not actually at Princeton half the time?
This is a burden? I thought it was one of the demands.
Lol. That.
Well sure, that is because BIPOC BAME AAIP (except the Asians) “…are relational people of context…”
For example.
This is a burden? I thought it was one of the demands.
Well, quite.
If you employ someone – say, via a policy of racial favouritism – and that person then starts demanding further insulting and divisive favours exclusive to themselves and people who vaguely resemble them, while insisting that they’re downtrodden and oppressed – in one of the most cossetting environments available – and claiming that they can’t be expected to function properly until every demand on a seemingly endless list has been met… then you may want to reflect on your hiring decisions.
Unless, of course, the whole point is to employ insufferable grifters who indulge in ludicrous racial narcissism.
Can anyone here at all imagine what colleges and universities will be like in 20 years? 20 years ago they were merely cosseting diploma mills, busy finding new ways to keep the already bulging budget bubbles going. 20 years ago the mind virus infecting our civilization, having originated on campus, was merely serious, though not necessarily terminal. 2 decades hence and I’m not sure most of these institutions will even exist.
Though with all that real estate and infrastructure they would be easy to repurpose into concentration camps I suppose, as opposed to the expensive voluntary indoctrination services they currently provide.
Meanwhile at Harvard, not unrelated:
This isn’t some brave person standing up and declaring that the Emperor isn’t wearing any clothes, this is the Emperor doing strip-tease on the front lawn of the faculty club building.
I’m not sure most of these institutions will even exist
The Legal Insurrection blog has a recurring category for news items about US colleges going out of business. It’s mostly the smaller private ones. The big Ivy League institutions are sitting on massive endowments that can fund them more-or-less indefinitely, and state-funded schools aren’t going anywhere absent a Japanese-model revolution.
More top ranked candidates for admission to Princeton and Harvard here.
Read ‘account balance’.

“Equity,” baby. Which, as noted here many times, translates as “equality of outcome regardless of inputs.”
Let the smell of all that fairness just waft over you.
state-funded schools aren’t going anywhere
Yes, the Ivies will sit on their billions, though I expect at least one of them to become so converged that the diversity burns it down, or a Sigma Variant outbreak will mark one of them as a BadPlace. Otherwise they will continue to be the holding facilities for the elite.
Many state schools will fall victim to state bankruptcies, however. Also, big state schools are still, somehow, popular for middle-class right-of-center types to send their children. As they continue to degrade and inflate that will eventually – hopefully – change.

Heh.
to ease the burden of their “invisible labour” and for being “emblems and spokespersons of diversity at Princeton.”
It used to be that token hires didn’t want to draw attention to themselves as token hires.
This is more like a court favorite whose capricious and escalating demands the king can’t say no to. No chateau, no title, no sinecure is ever enough.
This is more like a court favorite whose capricious and escalating demands the king can’t say no to.
If you give a group of people free hits, whether metaphorical or quite literal, the result will not be gratitude.
This is hardly esoteric knowledge. And yet…
Can’t we just pay for invisible labor with invisible money?
Lets not complicate this.
The university now boasts that there are no longer “minimum test scores for admission,” as “the entirety of a student’s background” will be “considered in context.”
Just like the good old days, when schools like Princeton excluded Jews, on the basis that Jews simply lacked the social polish to be Princeton students, whatever their academic potential.
You have to view your admissions “holistically”, after all.
They came for the fourth grade teachers and I didn’t speak up.
Princeton is debasing its currency. My experience with the IRS, which I assume has lots of diversity hires, is that they have fouled up my taxes 5 years in a row. The social security office could not fix my problem until I got a white woman on the phone. People are hired to do jobs. The belief that whites are hired simply for being white and that anyone can do any job is not simply wrong, it is crazy. United is hiring pilots by race now–what could go wrong?
Many times the woke academic activists (all races, men and women) who get in the news inspire someone to look up their publication list: it is always abysmal in both quantity and quality.
Princeton is debasing its currency.
Assuming, that is, that the currency in question includes probity and academic standards. Princeton is, I think, debasing the credentials and reputations of talented minority students in order to admit a more ideologically congenial number of much less able minority students, many of whom will fail and drop out, resentful and in debt.
But hey, appearances.
Somewhat related.
Note the school board’s plans to “review potential student disparities stemming from its zero-tolerance disciplinary policy on cheating.” Because disapproving of cheating – along with expectations of “turning work in on time” – result in “racial imbalance.”
Again, this is “equity.” This is what it means.
See also this. And pretty much anything else here tagged “problematic competence.”
Because the feelings of those who work hard and show ability should be trumped by the feelings of those who do neither.
It used to be that token hires didn’t want to draw attention to themselves as token hires.
They fell through the event horizon between “I must not be seen for what I am” and “I demand you see me as what I am not”.
It is a Rubicon for low-value motherfuckers.

It amazes me that these experts have so much trouble explaining that lower congestion begets higher average speed begets higher trauma from impacts. Or that lower-income drivers are more likely to be in older cars which are more likely to lack the newest safety innovations, because the car predates the safety equipment or because said equipment is non-functional and hasn’t been repaired.
If you never bothered to replace your airbag after your first collision, don’t come crying to me after your second, expecting me to believe that your car is racist.
Because the feelings of those who work hard and show ability should be trumped by the feelings of those who do neither.
For as much as we crow about mediocracy being excused, celebrated, and blamed on mystic forces in the end the joke is on us. Who has been more clever, more hard-working, more ruthlessly dedicated to acquiring real power (ie, the state and it’s coffers, plus culture-shaping private institutions) than the same lunatics that we lambast daily? Whereas “conservatives never conserve anything” is undeniable, and the Left’s long march continues essentially unabated.
We chortle and tsk at their upside down worldview but it is they who control the world.
Today in What Can’t Structural Racism Do?
Do not notice that blacks tend to drive faster than whites, and more aggressively and recklessly. Do not notice.
Who has been more clever, more hard-working, more ruthlessly dedicated to acquiring real power?
Ambitious assholes have always been drawn to the levers of power. It’s hard to find someone ruthlessly committed to modesty and leaving people alone.
In my middle age, I’ve given up fighting the inevitable and started planning my escape instead. I’ve found that accepting the loss of Western Civilization and taking steps to keep a few embers burning for the next cycle is much better for my digestion than was the constant resistance.
I’m reminded of living in Iowa in ’93. At a certain point, you realized that there was nothing you could do to stop the floodwaters from coming, so you switched gears to protect as much as you could, retreat to safety, and marshal resources for rebuilding when the time came. It was heartbreaking, but there was a kind of relief that went along with it.
“68 percent self-identify ”
Hmm.
“Self identify”, eh?
Huh. This might not turn out as they expect…
Let the smell of all that fairness just waft over you.
Oh there’s a smell wafting all right, but it’s more redolent of the south end of a north-bound bull.
From JuliaM:
” ‘Human rights lawyer Rosa Freedman does not believe men can become women by surgery…’
Who does?”
Come to think of it, sci-fi writer John Varley seemed to think so: He got famous in the 70’s for a whole series of stories set on the Moon in which people casually changed sex through outpatient surgery.
LOL

“68% self identify”.
So, presumably this remarkably high figure will include a multitude of Rachael Dolzeal clones. I wonder if any of the class of 2021 will subsequently be disowned and publicly shamed in a similar fashion?
Yet again it will prove to be the case that a complete lack of logic and consistency are essential features rather than bugs within the programme.
A couple years ago commenter TimT mentioned the delightfully clever French comic Mr Invincible.
There has been an awkward development, however: The French name of the comic is Imbattable (Unbeatable) but for some reason the American publisher chose to release it as Invincible. Now, however, in the latest issue, the artist has introduced an antagonist named Invincible. Oops.
IIRC pre-college test scores correlate well to graduation rates. By eliminating tests the college can now expand the pool of education borrowers. Graduation rates may fall but faculty and administrator incomes should increase. Popular degrees will still subsidize unpopular degrees.
