My $0.02, FWIW: I switched positions over the death penalty when I realized life in prison w/out parole – while expensive – is a fair compromise to the problem of the State getting convictions wrong,

My sister was a public defender in a certain portion of the United States of America. I once asked her how she could possibly defend some of the rat bastards that she had defended as part of her job.
She told me that part of her job was to ensure that if said rat bastard was found guilty, then it should be rock solid that said rat bastard was guilty of the crime. She also said that is a very important component of any justice system; if that person is in prison, it’s because they should (and maybe must) be in prison. There shouldn’t be any doubt that the system provided all the means required to ensure that you are in prison because you deserve to be there.
Now, humans fail; it’s what we do. (If we didn’t fail, we would be as gods.) Nonetheless, I think that public defenders should have the same budget as prosecutors. I do know that @Darleen has worked in that space.
I would like to know (and discuss) what her opinion is about the above. (If she agrees, it will be a very short discussion.) I’ll admit any such discussion will have little to no relevance to what is happening in Britain.

Blames ‘white supremacy’.
As Theodore Dalrymple has illustrated repeatedly, career predators and assorted monsters will often mouth the excuses provided by leftists if they think it will deflect comeuppance and serve as camouflage. Such creatures are, unsurprisingly, not troubled by lying. Some may come to internalise the lies and feel justified by them, emboldened. And so, for instance, opportunist malice and nakedly feral greed can be rationalised, and encouraged, by invoking racism, “white supremacy,” and “anti-poverty bias.” By both perpetrators and onlookers, at least among those doing the onlooking from a safe distance.
A phenomenon seen quite vividly during the recent surge of riots and looting in the US, and made explicit by any number of leftists, including, inevitably, leftist academics. And the lefties in question don’t seem overly concerned by the effect that their ready-made excuses may have on the level of such predation, and on the confidence of monsters.

Well, yes. Vermin, specifically. But it’s an interesting dynamic. Once the theft and violation begins – and the Amazon driver can only look on in disbelief, before herself being robbed and violently assaulted – it rapidly escalates. Other predators approach. Passing drivers stop and rush to join in. Not to help the woman being robbed and attacked. They just want to help themselves to someone else’s property. Because they feel entitled.
The world is not greatly enriched by the presence of such creatures. Or by the presence of those who would excuse their choices.

And every now and then we read about the exposure of a Prosecutor who fabricated evidence, or suppressed exculpatory evidence, or we hear about an expert who technician who did similarly. Remember Mike Nifong, the DA in the notorious Duke Lacrosse fake rape case? He was disbarred but he should have served a long prison term as well.

Real talk, y’all. As a human being specifically working to protect others I would like to think that I’d rush in to help that poor woman. As a rational person who’s witnessed what happens to anyone with a badge that lays hands on a violent black I’m not 100% sure I would. 95,96%, but not 100.

Because a lot of people in the UK don’t worry about stuff like that. We leave such nonsense to the left wing journos who write for the Guardian.

It’s even worse than the usual lie that abortion is “healthcare” – as if killing an unborn human is the equivalent of a flu shot. Trans youth are not being denied “healthcare”, the AK law is about keeping the more mercenary members of the medical community and the Woke ones from using minors as experimental animals. Once again we have a vicious crime perpetrated by someone who should not have been walking the streets.

Which may have some bearing on the failure of local security guards to confront the attacker. He may very well have been known to the local businesses and such as a dangerous person whom the “proper” authorities were doing nothing about. Not that it totally excuses the behavior.
But this raises another point. Am I the ONLY PERSON WHO HAS SEEN THIS STORY AND THOUGHT ABOUT KITTY GENOVESE? The murder of KG as reported by the NYT, as repeated in the psychology and history and such text books presented to me as FACT in high school, in university, in news media, in entertainment media, etc. over 15-20 years later, supposed FACT when in FACT there were significant errors in the NYT story…well, from Wiki:

Yet here we have virtually exactly the sort of thing happening right here…with video evidence…ACTUALLY HAPPENING…and where’s the outrage? Where is the Kitty Genovese outrage? Where are the culture warriors on the left BUT MOST ESPECIALLY ON THE RIGHT to give this story the kind of attention KG’s murder got? To drive it home in the history books, the psychology books, the movies, tv shows, casual references in the entertainment media, etc. etc. etc. This is why the right loses and loses consistently. The left follows through on their lies. Pushes them through every little corner of our society in which they can. The right writes a bunch of books that only similar thinking “conservatives” will ever see or read. They won’t shove this sort of indifference to human life down society’s throat as was done with KG’s story.

I thought the security guards must be black. If they’d been white, THAT would have been the story (sorry about the caps).

The security guards *did* eventually help the victim: A longer security cam video has been released which shows that after a minute the security guards did go outside and help the victim. They said that they did not help immediately because they saw the attacker brandishing that very large knife which featured in his next attack.
This information refutes my earlier comment.

If a life sentence meant a life sentence, that might have done the trick, but it rarely does.
A life sentence used to mean life, until the left corrupted everything.
