Above Us, Our Betters
Speaking, as we were, of enthusiasts of crime, meet communist poet Wendy Trevino:
When I see tweets of this nature – repeated slogan, repeated slogan, repeated slogan – I tend to think the tweeter is either adolescent or unwell. Ms Trevino is supposedly a grown woman. One who appears to have a complicated relationship with her father. Sometimes the clichés are just too on-the-nose. When not advocating shoplifting and being titillated by visions of collapsing social norms, Ms Trevino, our communist poet and Antifa Gal, wants us to know how pleased she is by criminals escaping prison and taking hostages. What said prisoners may have done to be there in the first place, and what they may do again now that they’re at large, doesn’t seem to interest her.
Update, via the comments:
In the name of opposing “racism, misogyny and ableism,” Ms Trevino urges her like-minded followers to “embrace what can destroy the relationships holding all of this together.” What the “this” is isn’t entirely clear. Possibly she means capitalism, a market economy, allegedly the cause of All The Bad Things. Or social norms, like lawfulness and consequences for thieving. The assumption here seems to be that the collapse of the economy and social proprieties, including expectations of trust and reciprocity, would really be of benefit to minorities, women and disabled people.
Ms Trevino’s titillation at the thought of the current coronavirus pandemic – one that may kill some of her neighbours – sowing social unrest and toppling capitalism reminded me of the self-styled “Occupy theoretician” David Graeber, who seemed to imagine that the lumpen masses would thrill to a vanguard of middle-class poseurs “destabilising the country” with a “vision of revolution inspired by anarchism.” Because the one thing that nice Mrs Wilson down the road can’t wait for is an anarcho-communist coup, economic ruin and lots of burning cars in the street outside.
Behold woke morality. Just don’t get it on the furnishings.
May she suffer the troubles she wishes upon others.
I’ll bet she is a serial shop lifter.
But hey, hundreds of criminals, including drug gang members, escaping prison and roaming with impunity, and eight prison guards taken hostage… it’s all such jolly fun.
It’s almost funny. These farcical preening creatures imagine themselves as radical, iconoclastic, the shatterers of worlds… and yet they all appear to follow much the same psychological trajectory.
You either have a civil society or you don’t.
Those who advocate theft and emptying prisons aren’t going to be happy when it’s their home that gets cleaned out and their neighborhood stores that shut down.
But thinking ahead isn’t one of their strong points, is it?
May she suffer the troubles she wishes upon others.
It is, I think, time for hubris to meet nemesis.

Possibly she means capitalism, a market economy. Or social norms, like lawfulness and consequences for thieving. Because, obviously, the collapse of the economy and social proprieties, including expectations of reciprocity, would really be of benefit to disabled people.
Or maybe it just has something to do with daddy.
…and yet they all appear to follow much the same psychological trajectory.
It takes a lot of schooling to become that dim and thuggish.
It takes a lot of schooling to become that dim and thuggish.
And the pretensions of radical heft can’t quite hide the psychodrama and dumb malevolence. That nasty little ego.
What’s communist about shoplifting or releasing prisoners? When did communists ever do that? That’s not communism, that’s anarchy.
It takes a lot of schooling to become that dim and thuggish.
Some learn it from their parents. I’ve know a few proud red diaper babies.
What’s communist about shoplifting
“Property is theft”? It’s a thing they’ve said for years.
Funny then that there’s bugger all shoplifting in communist countries.

And anyone who owns/operates a shop is a kulak.
That’s not communism, that’s anarchy.
Maybe, like our dear friend Laurie Penny, Ms Trevino thinks of herself as an “anarcho-communist,” which is apparently a thing.
Though other, more honest words are available.
…complicated relationship with her father.
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you!
Dr Thomas Szasz’ The Myth of Mental Illness was one of several books in the 1960s which set about demolishing the foundations of Western civilization, or civilization generally. Thanks, Tom.
Funny then that there’s bugger all shoplifting in communist countries.
Does taking animals out of the zoo and turning them into cold cuts count as shoplifting?
It would be comforting to think of Twitter as a database of sorts for those who get the bullet first, but then one remembers that sleazy weasels like comrade Trevino are very adept at switching to the winning side before painting any walls. Though it will be harder for the blue check marks to do so at least.
Maybe, like our dear friend Laurie Penny…
I do recall her lamentations and inner turmoils when her laptop or iPhone was lifted by an oppressed, underfed, victimized member of society.
That’s only supposed to happen to people like us, not people like her.

Oh yes. From the woman who told us, quite emphatically, that opportunist theft is “a political statement” and by implication righteous. Evidently, Laurie doesn’t like it when other people presume to redistribute wealth and property according to their own “self-determined” needs.
What’s communist about shoplifting or releasing prisoners? When did communists ever do that?
Castro dumping real (i.e. not political) prisoners among the Marieletos in order to stain the reputation of refugees fleeing Cuba.
Obama’s releasing of poor, sainted Gitmo and ICE detainees, and his dumping of convicts onto the US population during a government so-called shutdown.
Oddly enough, the state owning property never seems to fall under that rubric.
Ms Trevino urges her likeminded followers to “embrace what can destroy the relationships holding all of this together.”
Well, hi there Wendy, welcome to Texas…
tho I might have misconunderstrewed what you meant by “have their back”…
Heh.
Oddly enough, the state owning property never seems to fall under that rubric.
But the state doesn’t “own” it. The workers do! The state just takes care of it for the workers. If you’ve been
severelyproperly educated, you understand these subtle nuances. If you’ve been
severelyproperly educated, you understand these subtle nuances. And so, Ms Trevino tells us that capitalism is the cause of “racism, misogyny and ableism.” Albeit in ways never quite made clear.
Shop lifters aren’t just stealing from stores. They’re stealing from you by way of driving up prices.
Trevino likely knows that. She’s just not saying that. She thinks people are too dumb to realize it, and in many cases I’m sure she’s correct.
Trevino likely knows that”
You’re being kind.
Performance among the shelves.
Re: the “this is not business as usual” and so? If not capitalism, there’d be nothing to shoplift.
Sure, my local grocery still has some empty shelves (eggs, fresh meat, paper goods, the popular cereals) but this is temporary as the logistics chain adjusts. It’s like the pig through the python.
In places like Venezuela, they’ve eaten the chickens so you won’t get eggs for love or money.
I’m still sad that whomever received Red Penny’s laptop didn’t share the contents with the rest of us. Seems like such a missed opportunity.
I’m still sad that whomever received Red Penny’s laptop didn’t share the contents with the rest of us.
A first thought that does come to mind; “contents”??!!?
They’re stealing from you by way of driving up prices.
Exactly. All the fraud and theft that goes on, it’s too much effort for them to deal with the prosecutions and lawsuit risks of apprehending the criminal scum. They just let the criminal scum do as they please and pass on the costs to the consumer. Which is why brick and mortar establishments are losing business to the likes of Amazon and their suppliers.
Re: the “this is not business as usual” and so? If not for capitalism, there’d be nothing to shoplift.
Ms Trevino’s titillation at the thought of a pandemic – one that may kill some of her neighbours – sowing social unrest and toppling capitalism – and all for the benefit of the brown or disabled – reminded me of the “Occupy theoretician” David Graeber, who seemed to imagine that the lumpen masses would thrill to a vanguard of middle-class poseurs “destabilising the country” with a “vision of revolution inspired by anarchism.” Because the one thing that nice Mrs Wilson down the road can’t wait for is an anarcho-communist coup, economic ruin and lots of burning cars in the street outside.
Preening degenerates.
They just let the criminal scum do as they please and pass on the costs to the consumer.
Or they give up and close up shop. Which is just fine for our preaching class, as they can simply shift gears to how The Man is denying goods and services to disadvantaged communities.
“Or they give up and close up shop. Which is just fine for our preaching class, as they can simply shift gears to how The Man is denying goods and services to disadvantaged communities.”
Then they can talk again about “food deserts” and the need for government-run grocery stories.
She’s not averse to flogging her predictably turgid doggerel for $16 a throw, though I suspect she’s not going to be wildy popular with the public.

Riches: In her defense, “Cruel Fiction” is 1,047,578th on Amazon’s bestseller list, better than I would have guessed. Plus a dazzling five-star rating from one (1) reviewer who read it for school.
Other great moments in leftist poetry are available.
The tree of liberty must be nourished from time to time by ropes, lampposts, and some assembly required.
The devil has always been in those oxymoronic details.
The devil has always been in those oxymoronic details.
Nah. God is in the details. The devil is running roughshod over our society/societies as a whole. Waiting on my wife who is having a routine medical procedure done. Right now I am the only person in the waiting room. When we got here the TV was blasting the “news” which of course is all COVID-paranoia 24/7. When asked, they did turn it off but I think only because I’m here to as my wife’s post-op driver and I’m not allowed to leave the area and I told them I needed to get some work done, as I knew they did have wi-fi. So just having wrapped up what I was working on, in the semi-quiet I hear the nurses simultaneously complaining about the degree of paranoia (one nurse’s mother) and at the same time repeating The Narrative type beliefs that the government needs to shut this down or that down. Where do even these people who recognize the paranoia think the paranoia is coming from?
Meanwhile I continue to push back on the resident in my HOA who insists that I close our swimming pool down. On a FB post, after getting quite fed up with much of the freak out on this, I pointed out that our fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers faced far worse odds going over the top or attacking beaches at Normandy or fighting on Okinawa. We need leaders who will tell us to buck up and face reality. No one gets out of this world alive. I have not seen that sort of Churchillian/Pattonian leadership from even ONE prominent figure in our society. So long as the vast majority of people are willing to so easily give up so much liberty over a relatively small, yet yes dangerous threat, the devil has us by the throat not hiding in the details.

I recently mentioned the marked decline in quality of both content and comments over at io9, a pop-culture website.

The practised, effortless self-flattery is quite a thing. Apparently, we’re to believe that comment moderation – in the author’s case, stopping readers from expressing disapproval of woke pop culture – is “one of the most crucial jobs created by the internet economy.” Akin to being “a paramedic.”
Christopher Snowden is keeping a nice list of people using the coronavirus pandemic as a reason to call for things they’ve always wanted, anyway: https://twitter.com/cjsnowdon/status/1238254866763571206

Sorry if I segued too sharply there. No time this morning for coffee and my morning emails and such quickly put me into rant mode. Well that and “tree of liberty”. I’m gonna miss that beautiful tree.
“An explanation presents itself.”
That’ll be news to the unimportant blokes who lay the cables.
I find it fascinating that I keep finding myself sounding more like an old-school socialist than the modern Left.

You’ve no idea how difficult it used to be to convince people to spell it with an “e”, and now since Edward popped up, it’s become difficult not to.
([Removes spectacles with attached nose and moustache] I only use this super-secret online identity to keep my commenting from friends and family. I’ve never understood Facebook; why on earth would you want people you actually meet in real life to know about your late-night witterings online?)
I keep finding myself sounding more like an old-school socialist than the modern Left.
I must say the last decade has put to rest my notion that the left were the free speech champs, if nothing else. Having looked deeper into the events of the 60’s than pop culture and an American public education allowed I’m now convinced they never were champions of free speech, certainly not the radicals.
I’ve never understood Facebook; why on earth would you want people you actually meet in real life to know about your late-night witterings online?
There is, I think, a small risk of… inhibition… when I entertain the possibility that friends and relatives might poke about in here and be rendered aghast. But then I get over myself, and more so with age.

I do FB for FB things. Keep in touch with old friends, relatives, trade humor (the best of Friday Ephemera can be found in my FB feed), and such. Very, very little do I directly post on FB that is itself political. Values stuff, like Gods of the Copybook Headings or a recent C.S. Lewis article about the Bomb that someone found appropriate for perspective on this virus mental pandemic (which I see this morning got tagged as spam by the FB nannies), but generally I try to keep it light. Blogs on the otherhand, well y’all are victim of me on that. I know of absolutely no one IRL who has ever mentioned ever commenting on a blog. And blogs being more anonymous-ish, I’m OK with that.
But I try very hard to not let those worlds collide. I did have a brief moment of…well not fear but irritation when somebody here I think used info available here to root out my FB persona. I may have overreacted to that but I don’t think I did. But whatevs. I even ran a blog for a few months (Sherman’s Cowlick, I think you can google it but as you see I’m to lazy to even link it myself). I told absolutely no one IRL, not even my wife about it. Not that I hid it from her, I just didn’t see reason to bring it up, though she did eventually ask why I was spending so much more time on this internet thingy. I’m actually more concerned about people I know IRL finding me out here rather than blog people finding me on FB, not that I’m totally cool with that either. People I know IRL think it’s weird that I know or care about the sort of things that I engage in discussing here, yet some of those very same people I notice have been popping off a good bit more on FB about this stuff. But it’s mostly surface reaction. I doubt 5% of the people I know WTF Hayek, or Chesterton, or the difference between positive and negative rights. OK, maybe a few more know one or two out of the three, but not many.
So I kinda get a little irritated when I hear people pop off about FB. I mean, I do understand why and I’d really like to see an alternative be created, but it’s a bit like bitching about why your stupid screw driver sucks at pounding a nail. Without FB I would have lost contact with so many people who are/were important in my life and it’s been great getting in contact with old friends. I understand why people don’t want to do it but it’s like the guy in my HOA bitching about me not closing the pool. If you’re afraid of the damn thing, don’t go swimming in it.

Sweet mother of mercy! If I ever need a case study of the useless parasites drawn to once-successful organizations, this will be it. I love that one of their other new creations is a fat girl of colo(u)r with a Bag of Holding(tm).
And the creative genius behind all of this is a guy named Kibblesmith. Now I have this mental image of his grandfather working down at the cat food quarry, hammering giant chunks down into bite-size kibble for twelve hours a day, six days a week, all so that young Danny could go to University in the big city and learn how to create the cringiest comic book characters this world has ever seen. If only he hadn’t succumbed to Purina Lung back in ninety-eight — he would’ve been so proud!
Can you imagine the committee meeting where they debated the style guide for how to draw Snowflake’s package? One wonders if the Great Old Ones caused the meeting to be convened, or if they fled to the outer darkness in anticipation of its coming.

The Powers That Be at Marvel have gone full retard since Stan Lee died. I gave up on the Punisher series. You wouldn’t think they’d be able to create leftist propaganda from a comic book where the entire plot synopsis is “ex-Marine shoots murdering gangsters in the face,” but they managed.

If you needed FB to maintain contact with people who are/were important in your life, I would claim that they weren’t that important for you to get off of your ass to do the work to maintain said contact.

Seriously? Get off my ass you say? Barkeep, a pickled egg for The Dickhead. I think he knows where he can stick it.
If my comment had no truth in it, you wouldn’t have reacted thusly.

Yes, and I felt a bit dumb after looking at his Twitter handle directly beside my misspelling.

Can someone help me untangle this? Is it some sort of impotent threat of physical harm or a moderately potent form of logical-thinking aposematism. I’m kinda thinking the latter. Why I feel I have to know these things…speaking of which…

I think I am correct in presuming David is a different entity from David. I suppose spelling one David with a ‘p’ is asking a bit much. BTW, be thankful they don’t go with Tomson. Though if I were King…

Can you explain that assertion or were you just feeling testy when you wrote it?
Facebook, like most online affairs, can either assist your real life pursuits with astonishing efficiency OR create a sucking maw of impotent rage, jealousy, and vain preening from which you desperately wish to escape but cannot.
