In Name Only
Via Mr Muldoon in the comments, a grimly educational tale from the Windy City:
Ah, a quality human being. Would make a mother proud.
But wait, there’s more.
Injuries including nine broken ribs and two fractured vertebrae. Still, at least an offer of help.
And then two more participants joined the drama.
Valuables, lest there be doubt. Things that could be taken.
Always an indicator of good intentions.
Mr Nelson and his charming lady friend were later apprehended, following some indignant yelling of profanity, and both were charged with unlawful vehicular invasion, burglary, and unlawful possession of credit cards.
However,
At which point, I’m going to share the words pit and hot concrete for no reason whatsoever.
As illustrated here many times, there are people, generally of a progressive leaning, who struggle to conceive of just how degenerate the degenerate can be. People who somehow remain clueless – one might say wilfully impervious – to the psychology and motives in play, as expressed, often vividly, by the criminals themselves.
And yet, there are creatures walking among us, in significant numbers, for whom the words human being would be a merely technical term and inaptly flattering.
Update, via the comments:
I’ve previously mentioned the evening, on an unlit country road, when the Other Half and I hit a drunk walking obliviously in the middle of the road.
After taking the chap to hospital, what lingered in the mind – other than learning that he was known to hospital staff and had been in several similar accidents – was an exchange during our reporting of the accident to the police. We were told that we’d “done the right thing” and that “not everyone would.”
I remember being taken aback and trying to imagine hitting someone with a car and just leaving them, with a broken arm, sprawled at the side of the road. As if that were a thing one might do.
And before you ask, no, it didn’t occur to me to start rummaging through his pockets for stuff we could steal while he was dazed and in shock.

They’re hyenas. And she’s smirking in her mugshot.
You unfairly slur hyenas.
For those who missed that charming detail.
Those penitent vibes.
I’m just going to leave this here for no reason whatsoever.
Regarding the lively scenes above, this came to mind:
I mean, you watch the drama unfold, the feral dynamic spreading, and it’s quite hard to relate. It all seems rather alien, a tad surreal. If you’re civilised, that is.

What’s the editor window doing up-buggering links in preview? I used the graphic editor, and in the editor, turning text into a link makes it ungodly large. Thankfully that didn’t happen in the final product.
I’m not seeing the problem you describe.
Oh, I hate the “it’s not our fault we have a right to dress as we want and go as we want” stance. It completely misses the essence of why things like rape occurs – it’s all about predators and who presents as prey to the predator.
No, you’re right, darling, you are entitled to wear that tight miniskirt and high heels, but for the love of God stay with your group. Don’t leave a drink on the bar. No, it’s not cute to giggle and say things like “Oops, I think I’m drunk.” Leaving a bar alone in the early morning hours tipsy and wobbling on your heels is like camping in the Katmai Peninsula without bear spray.
In law, there is the term assumption of risk. Want to go parasailing on the beach of a third world country? Free climbing El Capitan, no ropes? Bringing the love of Christ to Sentinel Island? If something goes wrong, yes, you become the victim of the consequences of your choices. No, it doesn’t excuse what malfeasance might have been done to you by another but stop and think – maybe a better outcome can be had by controlling impulses and planning ahead than “teaching the
lion not to attackman not to rape.”Also, which AI clip are you seeing the most of on X? “Tip Toe Wing My Jawdinzz” or variations of Terry Crews singing “A Thousand Miles?”
Let’s just check in on the Green Party.
Okay then.
I still retain some hope that the Irish will get their heads out of their asses, but cultures do not usually change very quickly. (Note how long it took Irish and Scottish immigrants to assimilate in America and–at least partly–throw off their hyper-tribalist, ghetto honor culture bullshit.)
It happens now and then to me, too.
Need to experiment to see if, when it happens, the symptom can be avoided by pasting as plain text.
Once again, “known to the police”. Betcha the police and witnesses knew she was insane but also knew nothing could be done until she actually murdered someone…and even then judges and “mental health professionals” would not keep her locked up as long as necessary.
Career criminal. Why wasn’t he in prison? Better yet, why wasn’t he executed?
On those notes, it is not your father’s Constellation anymore.
I’d add that once you abandon basic standards of courtesy and behaviour, they’re quite difficult to retrieve.
As noted here.
It’s ‘tosher’, not ‘mole man‘.
Di is right. Per grok:
“Pray good people be civil, I am the substitute teacher.”
Had the conversation with a young lady about how women need to be careful where they go late at night to avoid rape and she repeated the line “men shouldn’t rape” as if that settled it. Yes, sweety, but they do. I’m a man twice your size and I am still careful where I go in big cites–I avoid entire areas. The obliviousness about reality gets people mugged and killed. Sad really. When the person in question is a judge it gets other people mugged and killed.
Intoxication is not consent but neither is it an excuse for regret.
Variation on a theme.

There’s a general copy/paste issue regarding fonts and sizes and other…wtf…forget what words…it’s like my entire career was some sort of trauma I’m subconsciously trying to forget…copy and paste in the comment box is WYSIWYG but after hitting post the defaults take over.
I have often wondered if that doesn’t affect links sometimes, depending on what device is being used on the copy side. I don’t think I have ever had a problem posting links unless I accidentally backspaced over something, though I have suspected that may be Muldoon’s and other’s issues. I have been meaning to suggest pasting links first into Notepad or some other ascii-only text editor, though last I recall they may have even mucked that tool up.
Classy. Not sure I’d care to swim in a soup of other people’s armpit hair.
Not had an issue with links, but I do use Notepad for quoted paragraphs. Avoids formatting issues – weird fonts, inapt colours, etc.
Very true. I occasionally help teach classes on self-defense, and there are two things that I invariably hear from victims of interpersonal violent crime. First is some version of, “He just came out of nowhere!” Second is, “I couldn’t believe it was happening!”
Most normal people don’t have any theory of mind for feral predators.
The mismatch of mindsets, the misplaced assumption that the intruder or predator will behave as you might, can have the makings of a horror film.
Again, from this.
What struck me on seeing that for the first time was the hopeless, almost blackly comical inadequacy of the response – the outstretched hand forbidding entry. As if the gesture might do the trick. As if the intruder’s thought processes, such as they are, must, simply must, be exactly like your own.
Granted, the situation is nightmarish and surreal, and the victims are presumably nice, middle-class people unaccustomed to homicidal knife-wielding Algerian ferals named Mohammed. But still. The assumption of some fundamental sameness seems to me disabling, a basis for miscalculation. At a time when much is at stake.
It would have been the work of a minute to duct-tape a large butcher’s knife to the end of a broom handle and do an Achilles on him.
Hells, it would have been less work to use that outstretched hand to push the nasty sod off the ladder.
‘Blackly comical inadequacy’ is a good description there.
Being in Sweden, maybe he should have tried the no-no dance…
blackly comical inadequacy of the response
Boiling oil, a la ye olde castle defenders would be more appropriate.
Maybe the citizenry should invest in those hook spears or what were they that castle defenders used to push ladders and/or climbers off the walls. Medieval savagery deserves medieval defenses after all.
This sort of attack is not new. What is new is that the defenders would probably end up in prison if the attackers were harmed in the slightest.
But will that “loophole closure” be applicable to all parties involved? Despite the histrionics over the Cornel case (which has all the vibes of the Duke Lacrosse fiasco or the Rolling Stone hoax), no one is disputing that ALL the people involved were drunk or high on drugs — Jane Doe was snorting ketamine off males and vice versa.
If she can’t consent, neither can they, which should make intoxication a moot point all around.
It’s one of those incidents, of which we appear to have no shortage, where context gives the thing a certain symbolism:
There is, shall we say, a cultural resonance.
So they all can be prosecuted for rape. But she might get a suspended sentence while the guys get five years.
Huh? She raped what, five guys? They each only raped one girl.
Being of Irish-diaspora descent, this is one of my interests: how the Irish went from behaving and being perceived in very much the same terms as modern urban blacks to respectable lower-class Americans. It turns out it was largely the work of one man leveraging and strengthening the already-existing Catholic faith of the Irish immigrants.
I don’t think the US black community has anything similar. Bill Cosby was the closest thing to it, and I remain convinced his largely-bullshit prosecution was a smear job to reduce his influence.
I’m about to head to Mexico for an extended stay and I’ve already decided I need to pony up for the business class seat. I’m 6’4″ and thanks to some health issues I’ve ballooned to over 300lbs myself. Neither I nor the person next to me wants to deal with that for five hours in coach.
If you’re using Windows, when you copy text from a web page Windows does not copy just the displayed text – it copies the HTML used to style that text as well. If you paste the text into a web page, Windows also pastes the HTML (it doesn’t do this if you paste into a text-only application like Notepad, so you don’t see it).
Because the styling information is hierarchical, the interaction of your pasted text style with the styling information already present on the page can result in some weird styling results.
Really tired of picking up bits and pieces on this rape case as bits and pieces are conflicting and getting complicated. So just went to wiki for a summary and the story begins…
OK…Tri-Delt, one year under legal drinking age (like that ever mattered on a college campus) went to the bar with the house mother…yes…yes…I seem to recall a Penthouse Forum letter that went kinda like this.
But, yes. Let’s continue sending our young people hundreds or thousands of miles away to these institutions where the only adults supposedly in charge are not even adults themselves. God knows you cannot learn calculus at a community college.
Fortunately, Windows now has a “paste without formatting” when you right-click to paste into these comment boxes.
Once again: If you set out to get drunk or stoned, you are doing so knowing that it will affect your judgement.
Furthermore, many young women get drunk specifically to reduce their inhibitions.

“Ha ha, you silly kid! There’s no mama in this picture! You’ll learn soon enough!”
Not a red flag at all.
Intoxication loophole?
Maybe we need to establish that if intoxication means inability to consent it also means inability to form mens rea.
Narcissistic monsters.

I’ll send myself for re-grooving….
