In Name Only
Via Mr Muldoon in the comments, a grimly educational tale from the Windy City:
Ah, a quality human being. Would make a mother proud.
But wait, there’s more.
Injuries including nine broken ribs and two fractured vertebrae. Still, at least an offer of help.
And then two more participants joined the drama.
Valuables, lest there be doubt. Things that could be taken.
Always an indicator of good intentions.
Mr Nelson and his charming lady friend were later apprehended, following some indignant yelling of profanity, and both were charged with unlawful vehicular invasion, burglary, and unlawful possession of credit cards.
However,
At which point, I’m going to share the words pit and hot concrete for no reason whatsoever.
As illustrated here many times, there are people, generally of a progressive leaning, who struggle to conceive of just how degenerate the degenerate can be. People who somehow remain clueless – one might say wilfully impervious – to the psychology and motives in play, as expressed, often vividly, by the criminals themselves.
And yet, there are creatures walking among us, in significant numbers, for whom the words human being would be a merely technical term and inaptly flattering.
Update, via the comments:
I’ve previously mentioned the evening, on an unlit country road, when the Other Half and I hit a drunk walking obliviously in the middle of the road.
After taking the chap to hospital, what lingered in the mind – other than learning that he was known to hospital staff and had been in several similar accidents – was an exchange during our reporting of the accident to the police. We were told that we’d “done the right thing” and that “not everyone would.”
I remember being taken aback and trying to imagine hitting someone with a car and just leaving them, with a broken arm, sprawled at the side of the road. As if that were a thing one might do.
And before you ask, no, it didn’t occur to me to start rummaging through his pockets for stuff we could steal while he was dazed and in shock.

Based on crime statistics, about 5% of the city ought to be dead or in prison.
Based on sympathy-for-criminals statistics, make that 25%.
Based on voting patterns, about 65% are not morally qualified to vote.
In the early 20th century, blacks could blame lack of success on discrimination.
Now they have only themselves to blame, and it fills them with murderous rage.

The pattern that does not exist keeps appearing:
For a nationalist party, the SNP is strangely comfortable with this invasion.
Also true of Sinn Fein.
Just saying it ain’t just Europe. I see people today in this country having a melt down because they are convinced that Donald Trump just called on Iran to nuke LA or San Diego. They insist that this is true and there is video where he says such words. You’re in a cult if you don’t believe the evidence right there before your eyes.
If you think surrendering Europe will be a tragedy…
“Show us your papers.”
It sounded better in the original German.
Because neither one was what they claimed to be about. Their overt causes served their purpose to the covert cause. They either join up with the latest overt cause or be abandoned. And where are they gonna go?
Indeed.™
The Red Lipped Batfish is not AI. I repeat, the Red Lipped Batfish is real. Grok even said so.
If Mr ‘Sasha’ Yates were a fish …
Then it depends on your browser and DE. I forget which of the seventeen hojillion half-finished undergrad CS projects Mint uses.
Goodhart’s Law. Extremely common in software companies.
For once, this is less woke infection and more just history departments being history departments. The demand of history professors for grant money dwarfs the supply, so they’ll just make up any old bullsh*t if it gets them attention, notoriety and tenure. I’ve read works that are far, far worse for basic sanity, if not the politics.
Since we’re on the topic of Linux, the open source community is faring badly, with multiple popular products and libraries going unmaintained or closed source commercial due to lead developer burnout. It turns out that many of the funding non-profits that provided money and hardware to open source projects were ultimately getting the money from USAID.
I once worked for a fintech started by four guys from Detroit, and they put their HQ right downtown. Partly because real estate was war zone levels of cheap, and partly because they wanted to give back to the city and revitalize the downtown. During the annual general meeting where they flew everyone into Detroit for a week-long party, one of the field sales reps was ambush drop-kicked by a homeless person while waiting at a crosswalk in front of the office.
My suggestion that cutting the party short by one day and using that money to hire armed escorts for employees getting to and from the office was not well received.
The eyes.
It’s always the eyes.
Funny you should say that, because ESR just said the opposite:
