Tokens Of Gratitude And Esteem
With various blog-related expenses looming, annual renewals of this and that, I’m going to do something reckless and appeal to your better nature.
If you’d like to ensure this place exists a while longer and remains ad-free, there are three buttons below the fold with which to monetise any love. Debit and credit cards are accepted. If what happens here is of value, this is a chance to show it.
If one-click haste is called for, there’s a QR code in the sidebar, at which you point your phone camera, and my PayPal.Me page can be found here. There are also SubscribeStar and Ko-Fi accounts, via which love may be monetised, whether as one-off donations or monthly subscriptions. Should you be gripped by an urge to express encouragement via currency, by all means succumb.
Additionally, any Amazon UK shopping done via this link, or via the button in the sidebar, results in a small fee for your host at no extra cost to you.
Sordid business, I grant you, but it’s what keeps this place here.
For newcomers wishing to know more about what’s been going on here for nigh on twenty years, in over 3,600 posts and hundreds of thousands of comments, the Reheated series is a pretty good place to start – in particular, the end-of-year-summaries, which convey the fullest flavour of what it is we do. A sort of blog concentrate. If you like what you find there… well, there’s lots more of that.
Do take a moment to poke through the discussion threads too. The posts are intended as starting points, not full stops, and the comments are where much of the good stuff is waiting to be found. And do please join in.
As always, thanks for the support, the comments, and the company.
Consider this an open thread. Share ye links and bicker.

Now I feel old.
Also ping!
Bless you, sirs. May you discover that if you actually clean your nose-hair trimmer, it works like new.
Try sitting here, matey.
Oh, it is. There’s always that feeling of “What if you gave a party and nobody came?” People are by and large accustomed to reading things for free, at least online. Which isn’t enormously helpful to people who spend their time and money producing what’s being read.
So yes, I’m very much aware of swimming against the tide.
The last thing a field mouse sees.
Eep.

Bless you, sir. May your toast not be overbuttered.
It’s a word.
Oh there’s more. With helpful diagrams.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida: when even a fellow band member (excusably) gets it wrong.
And even the lyrics sites are sometimes wrong.
Note how sometimes culture is something ephemeral which can be replaced (without regret) while at other times culture is baked into one’s genes.
I think those are called Mondegreens.
Or a camera.
I remember those uncompromising demands.
This can join the ironic observation that feminists who demanded the end of men-only places are now seeing insane men invading women’s most intimate places.
Not only men-only spaces, but the manosphere, which I guess is like a bathysphere only imaginary.
Clue, but done in the closet.
Men only spaces: remember when female reporters with cameras demanded access to male locker rooms at sports events after games for the interviews while athletes were showering? And the men were just supposed to be ok with it? Somehow I have not seen male reporters in the women’s locker rooms after a game.

Heh.
“Oh no, due to small change in humidity, she’s reverting to her original programming…”
CRUSH. KILL. DESTROY.
As an Apathetic Agnostic as long as a given practitioner of whatever is not trying to blow me up or convert me I have no ecclesiastical bent, but I am pretty sure that for an alleged priest this is an awfl take.
For some reason, this came to mind.
That voice alone is certain to make infidels.
Isn’t, er, that – the thing she doesn’t know – basically the product on offer, the reason for her job?
I mean, I’m not attuned to the subtleties of modern theology, but…
Tip jar rattled ! The amount of pleasure I get from this rickety barge, especially the Friday ephemera makes it worthwhile !
The seminaries seem to be full of atheists–which raises the important question of just why atheists would choose to enter holy orders.
Answers: To make them less holy. To subvert society from its foundational institutions. To garner the status and benefits (lifetime employment! Light workload! No physical labor!) of priesthood without submitting to the requirements and duties.
Bless you, sir. While dining with family, may you not inadvertently catapult stringy pizza cheese onto your spectacles.

Ah, subscriptions, the sweetest plum. Bless you, sir. May you have done things about which it’s fun to reminisce.

I’m confused.
Don’t forget that innocent face.
Note the recurring head tilt.
Ah, updated. Thanks.

Bless you, sir. Should you be getting lots of mockery mileage and glorious one-upmanship out of your beloved other spilling food down his shirt, may you not, some hours later, spill food down your own shirt. Because, trust me, you will never hear the end of it.
“A bit of a curveball…” she says in an English accent to the two English gentlemen. Curious if a UK person would casually use that specific wording outside of an American context. I believe it has another name in cricket. And in soccer, don’t they usually speak of “bending” the trajectory?
And there we have it. Only took about 12 more hours. I knew I could count on him caving. Saves me a lot of trouble, thus leaving more of what little time left to listen to Frank and Amadeus and Patsy and Bryce.
[ Draws upon near-non-existent knowledge of sport. ]
Isn’t googly or wrong’un a thing in cricket?
That’s it. That’s all I got.
Poor judgement? Poor question.
My limited knowledge of cricket, one thing I think I understand is that the baseball equivalent of googly is knuckle ball. A pitch delivered with minimal spin such that its path is randomly unpredictable. A term which when I learned of it, I found much more appealing and amusing than knuckle ball. Grok tells me swing might be an equivalent term? Not sure though because cricket allows for a strike, or whatever hits the wicket, to hit the dirt first. Don’t even know if it’s common to deliver such a pitch directly to the wicket. Which is kinda why I found the usage odd. The term does get used quite often in American politics so I’m certain a Brit would understand it just as we understand a sticky wicket, but it would be rare and odd for me to refer to a sticky wicket if I wasn’t kinda hinting at a Brit reference or trying to sound Britwitty.
Now you’re just screaming.
Work harder, not smarter.
