Quite nice indeed.
I have a vague memory of being taken for a roadside picnic by my grandparents, who owned a car. I was a very wee seedling at the time, so it’s barely an impression. Not sure how much of it is conflated with the Top Gear episode in which Clarkson and Hammond take three elderly ladies on an outing in which they eat sandwiches in a lay-by. In the rain.
For reference purposes.
Lots more of that in the past when folks were poorer. Such cost-saving measures were how my parents were able to afford to take us on summer vacations.
As a wee seedling, just going somewhere in a car was an event. An outing. Eating sandwiches by the road was a bonus, as I recall.
When my parents first got married, they got around by streetcar.
I was, I believe, fifteen when our household first had a car.
Also, our shoes were made of newspaper and dung.
Only one of those statements is true.
You had newspapers?
So this H-Man. Does he have anything to do with those occasionally reported dissolutions of parliaments?
Happy memories of the family being piled in my grandparents’ car (they were Cadillac people) and driven around neighborhoods mid-December to see Christmas lights. Even going into town to look at Christmas windows in department stores.
Grandma Mildred (as referenced previously) always carried a big purse during car outings – something to rival Mary Poppins’ magic bag. Somehow it was always filled with snacks and Lifesavers.
(Mildred)
Heh. Yesterday I remembered that Grandma’s sandwiches always seemed to taste better. For reasons that escape me.
Me, too.
