Reheated (127)
For those craving “queer theory,” some items from the archives:
I suffered, so now you must.
While you marvel at the naff, strained metaphor – teeth-brushing as an expression of “Whiteness,” an allegedly pathological state – and the irrelevant, space-filling anecdotal rambling, and the unearned, predetermined conclusion, and the invocation of Judith Butler – this Judith Butler – do spare a thought for your gracious host. As I poke at the smouldering wreckage of academia.
They Call it “Queering” History.
Tudor history, as seen through the welding goggles of wokeness.
We’re told – indeed, assured – by Hannah McCann, of the museum’s collections and curatorial staff, “From the Tate Britain and the Wellcome Collection, to the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, museums are reinterpreting and Queering their objects.” A comfort, I know.
Exactly why such “queering” is underway – what its relevance might be – is not, however, made clear. An explanation for this bolting-on of irrelevant, flimsy tat – in the name of “queer theory” – was not, it seems, deemed necessary. Nor is it entirely obvious how such “queering” of museum contents benefits those who wish to know more about Henry VIII’s favourite warship.
Regarding the mysterious purpose of all this “queering” of sixteenth-century objects, Rafi adds, drily, “It justifies the employment of lecturers in ‘Queer Theory’…” Indeed. That does seem to be the primary objective. That, and the modish tactic of identifying a thing that people find interesting and then inserting one’s own rather narrow and tedious politics, and by extension oneself.
Looking through the catalogue notes, no other obvious benefit, for visitors, springs to mind. Unless we include the exercising of eyebrows by moving them up and down. And the effect, the incongruity – the sheer cack-handedness of it – is quite bizarre. It reminded me of the ‘adverts’ in The Truman Show, in which Truman’s wife and neighbours suddenly, rather desperately, and often mid-sentence, draw attention to some cleaning product or chicken dinner.
Welcome to the world of queered history. It’s like actual history, but less so.

Further, annotated and fairly graphic, details of Mr Andersson’s paedophilic self-pleasuring project – sorry, “ethnographic fieldwork” – can be perused via the link above. Should that be your thang.
As to the “embodied understanding” mentioned above, it remains unclear what exactly was achieved – beyond the obvious, I mean. Mr Andersson tells us that during three months of, er, research, and 30 notebook entries, his mind often wandered to thoughts of other gentlemen doing much the same thing with the same publications, including the copies he’d acquired second-hand.
This is described as a “feeling of intimacy.” Dozing off afterwards is described as “self-care,” which is apparently important. And we’re informed that the Cellophane wrappers of his pornography collection “signalled luxury and investment in myself.” It’s Earth-rumbling stuff.
For those craving more, this is a pretty good place to start.
Consider this an open thread. Share ye links and bicker.

I’m exercising my eyebrows.
Re-reading the thing this morning, I’d forgotten how mad it is, how laughably cack-handed. It really is a textbook illustration of The Desperate Segue.
And so we go from acknowledging the rarity and expense of mirrors in the sixteenth century to suddenly being lectured on the psychological crises of cross-dressing men. As if this were an obvious trajectory for catalogue notes in a museum about Tudor England.
“I know you’ve spent a lot of time and trouble coming here to learn about sixteenth-century artefacts from Tudor England, but let’s talk instead about subversion, cross-dressing, and how queer people’s hair is a central pillar of their identity.”
I paraphrase, of course. But just barely.
Each one of those topics are nothing more than academic justification for personal sexual perversity. And grift. Let’s not forget about the grift.
There can’t be much “uninterrogated Whiteness” left.
A common leftist predilection, but not confined to leftists. To give just one non-ideological example, I used to know a nerd who, upon hearing even the most fleeting and insignificant allusion to trains or aircraft would immediately interject something irrelevant to hijack the conversation onto his favorite topics.
“Ooh, look, Malcolm, they’ve got one of Henry VIII’s…”
YOU WILL NOW START THINKING ABOUT CROSS-DRESSING MEN.
“Er, pardon..?”
YOU WILL NOW START THINKING ABOUT CROSS-DRESSING MEN.
“Er, no, thank you, if it’s all the same. We spent the morning driving to look at…”
WHY AREN’T YOU THINKING ABOUT CROSS-DRESSING MEN?
[ Loud alarm. ]
It’s illegal so we’ll subsidise it with taxpayer’s money!
It should scarcely need saying – yet somehow it does – that the beneficiaries should not be here. I doubt that our civilisation is greatly enhanced by their presence. And that those so readily giving them our resources – resources that would be denied to any of us – should be horsewhipped through the city centre.
Through every city centre.

Appealing to the better nature of zealous, mentally ill people whose perceptions are by definition unreliable, whose goals include deception and the falsification of their identities, and the coercion of others to participate in that deception, and a great many of whom will have Cluster B personality disorders.
Yeah, good luck with that.

I come for the phrasing.
It’s pleasingly descriptive.

White liberal female asks:
The bodycam of him “interacting” with the police.
True. Yet nothing remotely close to that is likely to happen. The question is why not? Why does western civilization want to commit suicide in this manner? There was no need to bring these people in. There was no pressing shortage of criminal scum or even a shortage of kebab kiosks or wtf cultural contribution these ignorant masses do. Find what the issue is and address it. Either that or just go ahead and kill yourselves. It’s just procrastination otherwise.

Further to our rumblings about progressive empathy, or pseudo-empathy, this.
Also this.

Yet progressive empathy, or whatever it actually is, would seem to be premised on a kind of Rawlsian tosh that falls apart the minute you start thinking about it.

Queering everything: back in the day, people had a field day laughing about finding freudian symbolism everywhere. Feminists insisted skyscrapers are phallic symbols instead of the only way to build in a space-limited domain. hahaa. Pikers, the lot.

Update on the 30 yr old man:
So his life has been drastically altered but he’d making the best of it.
Progressive ’empathy’…
Which, as seen above, entails angrily mouthing unconvincing claims, conjuring conspiracies, calling people racist over and over again, and ignoring all available statistics. (Say, regarding economic status, which is invoked as the go-to excuse and is prompted refuted in the replies.)
The gist of these supposedly empathetic arguments is often something like, “Imagine you were a gangbanger or carjacker brought up in a ‘deprived’ neighbourhood – you’d be doing the same thing because we’re all exactly the same. You should be forgiving and indulgent, and favour leniency in sentencing. You shouldn’t even disapprove. They’re just like you, but oppressed.”
But no. The gangbangers and carjackers aren’t at all like me. The me talking now could not exist in that kind of head. And those invoking empathy are doing something else entirely, generally by assigning motives that are not in fact in play, while studiously ignoring the motives that are in play, as stated by the gangbangers and carjackers themselves.
And that sounds like a failure of empathy. Something like its opposite.
It’s important to remember that empathy – understanding the perspectives of other people, their motives and desires – can often result in revulsion, in moral disgust. And if, say, moral disgust isn’t a socially acceptable possibility – if that’s ruled out in advance, as above – then whatever it is you’re doing, it isn’t empathy.
From the carjacking post:
And yet progressives will conjure elaborate explanations, outright fantasies, that bear no relation at all to the motives stated by the criminals themselves. The reality of their nature.
