Tales From The Far Side (2)
Further to recent rumblings in the comments, a tale about the perils of noticing things:
She describes the emails as “rather polite” and “relatively kind.” Her daughter had been a Girl Guide, and she herself had done some volunteering with the organisation. “I thought it was a really uncontroversial, uncontentious email,” she says. It expressed her view that “this person should not be in charge of young people.” (The Critic has seen the email and can confirm her description of it. It does, however, refer to Sulley as a “male”…)
And that’s when a police officer appeared on her doorstep.
Also, open thread.
It’s like we’re living a parallel universe.
It’s like we’re living a parallel universe.
I suppose that depends on whether you think young schoolgirls should be under the influence of, or have close contact with, a fifty-something man who refers to himself as a “girl” and has serious mental health issues – and who enjoys sharing on social media endless photos of himself dressed as a woman, or an approximation of one, with fake firearms, a riding crop, and ludicrously salacious comments, and who clearly enjoys disquieting people with his disorder, and who delights in transgression and incongruous sexual innuendo. Not, I think, an obvious candidate for what is considered a “safeguarding” role.
But apparently, when a once-reputable “girl-only organisation,” a famous charity, has a “trans-inclusive equality and diversity policy,” you may find yourself being punished for raising such concerns.
I dunno, these bigots who insist on holding onto outdated expectations of safety and wholesomeness for their daughters at girl-camp are really an outrage to modern lefty sensibilities aren’t they? Thank God our hard-working police are on hand to threaten and berate them into checking their thinking.
On a somewhat lighter note, thanks to another barfly I am now subscribed to シャベチャン. I have no idea what the hell’s going on but in case the police are monitoring I can assure them it’s completely saphic and whoresome.
whoresome
This too is a hatecrime.
As for Sulley, he’s no problem one angry father couldn’t sort out.
Thank God our hard-working police are on hand to threaten and berate them into checking their thinking.
You have to wonder how the situation – specifically, Mr Sulley’s appointment – even came about, despite the absurdity, and despite what one might think of as fairly obvious reservations. Exactly how much coyness and mental contortion was involved?
Unless we’re supposed to believe that those responsible for the appointment, in a “safeguarding” role, didn’t bother to check the candidate’s social media, where warning signs were hard to miss, because they were so busy gushing with affirmation.
Because serious mental illness is something we must affirm, apparently.
Exactly how much coyness and mental contortion was involved?
When you’re in a cult, the real world appears as through a glass, darkly.
Why does this thing never happen to the Boy Scouts? Sure, it has its problems with NAMBLA members seeking authority roles within it, but should a father tell such a person in not-so-subtle ways that they run the risk of vigilante justice, no one gets summoned by the police. It’s almost as if women are . . . targeted.
This is just one incident, in itself and – were it just one in isolation -(it’s not) repellently outrageous and contrary to fundamental human morality, that it’s now obvious there’s a strategic plan afoot.
Even were it just a mistake to appoint this inwardly and outwardly tormented being to look after little girls, you have to consider that – as Ayn Rand said – “mistakes that big are always made deliberately”.
I’m convinced there’s a plan behind all this terrifying nonsense, and the objective is not the well-being and happiness of normal-people.
Meh. White women. They get what the deserve. OK, maybe not this specific one but I’ll take it back if someone can show me where she stood up against the mob ever before. It is only because the PC police are coming after her woman-oriented concerns of a man entering female safe space is my default position unless proven otherwise. Like my dad told me when I was a kid, “If I ever punish you for something you didn’t do, think of all the crap you got away with that I never found out about and apply it to that.”
A half dozen of the little white women on my FB feed (about half of which being spouses of male friends) are throwing up memes about censorship. Most of them the same meme. What has driven this? One Tennessee school board chose not to use the comic book Maus to teach about the Holocaust. Granted I think some of the board’s reasons are a bit weak, but it’s not like they won’t be teaching about the Holocaust. Just not using that specific book. OMG!!!11!, Censorship!!11!, And the first I saw of this Stephen King was leading the way. Censorship it is. Yes. Meanwhile real censorship goes on all around them and….they’re good. But this book was ‘banned’. Just like I was ‘banned’ from attending MIT. Repealing the 19th Amendment would go a longer way in this country than helicopters.
[* white women look around to see what the other white women think *]
White women publicly: Yes, of course we’re good with that.
White women privately: [* well it doesn’t affect me directly so if I just keep quiet about it, they’ll go eat someone else *]
You have to wonder how the situation – specifically, Mr Sulley’s appointment – even came about,
It came about because nobody SAID ANYTHING. See “white women” above. And this incident itself will pass so long as people are more willing to tolerate these things than they are willing to tolerate the abuse that comes to ONE or two…a minority anyway…for speaking up. Maybe some Canadian truckers could help. But judging from what the rest of Canadian pussy citizens are willing to speak up about and tolerate, maybe even that won’t help.
I’m convinced that meaningful pushback against the obscenity of wokism won’t begin until at least half those supporting it have been personally adversely affected .
In the meantime the rest of us should just sit back and enjoy the show.

“Ooh! Can he come read at our children’s Drag Queen Story Hour, too?”
In answer to David’s question–exactly how much coyness and mental contortion was involved?–I’d venture the guess: none.
Not entirely unrelated.
“this person should not be in charge of young people.”
Something similar but more general could be said about the police.
… the obscenity of wokism…
Part I: One Vice President, one Associate Vice President, three Assistant Vice Presidents, one “Equity Educator”, one Program Coordinator, three secretaries, 24 pronouns. I give you the Colorado State University Office of Inclusive Excellence.
The office, it is rumored, is a leading nominee for the annual Montgomery Burns Award For Outstanding Achievement In The Field of Excellence.
Part II: I apologize in advance.
Can also be said about private citizens who approve of men in women’s private spaces. Not intellectually or morally qualified to carry out the duties of citizenship.

In case there were any doubt.
The real coup is how the trans took the heights of victimhood and are now totally in charge. They are winning sports championships and setting records, dressing in the women’s swimmer’s locker rooms with the girls, in charge of women’s shelters, in charge of little girls outings. It is beyond belief. They even have the police in charge of their enforcement. Too bad about those little girls…oh never mind, the woke don’t even care.
“safeguarding” … “trans woman” … “hate crime”
I still think Huxley was more accurate, but Orwell was on to something.
“No, he’ll hold onto power as hard as he can,” Levant stated. “Let me tell you what I think the point is: The point is the convoy itself. To show that you’re not alone. To show that you’re not the crazy one; they are.”
Orwell again. Propaganda exists to make you think you’re crazy, that it’s just you. I’m actually reading Nineteen Eighty-Four right now, and that’s basically what at least the first two parts are all about: Smith wondering if he’s the only person in the world who thinks the way he does, and the joy in discovering that he isn’t.
So yeah, Levant’s absolutely right. It’s the reason The Authorities hate the free internet, too. They rant against “social media”, but nothing makes them happier than to see the online mob corralled into a few easily-controllable websites.
“Inclusive Excellence.”
Yep, he was definitely on to something.
I’m no expert, but I can’t help but notice that the rifle in the photo at the top of the Critic article really looks very much like a real L85A2 or possibly A3 variant, not a replica. Presumably one belonging to the cadets. I don’t agree with our restrictive gun laws, and not really sure of the law here, but that looks rather iffy.
Colour me unconvinced but if you have “a dedicated detective specialising in hate crime” you’re probably not really “maintaining an open mind”. Also, if you have people on staff specifically to deal with this issue I imagine you’re going to get a lot more of it to justify the jobs – got to protect that dosh.
…looks very much like a real L85A2…
Look like, but because of laws over there more likely an Airsoft which are pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing.
Look like, but because of laws over there more likely an Airsoft which are pretty much indistinguishable from the real thing.
I dunno. The modified charging handle (replaced from the A1), the extendible bipod just visible at the bottom of the foregrip, the picatinny top rails and side rails, etc., all look totally real. The replica versions I’ve seen online look nothing like it. I’d put money on it being a real one.
At least there would be one real thing in the picture…
The replica versions I’ve seen online look nothing like it.
Having any semiauto rifle in other than .22 rimfire is illegal in the UK, and I imagine waving it around in one’s house is probably also, so doubt this is real.
As far as appearance goes, this one is a WE brand Airsoft, photo from a UK Airsoft forum.
In answer to David’s question–exactly how much coyness and mental contortion was involved?—I’d venture the guess: none.
Well, the level of inversion and absurdity is such that mere accident or incompetence seems rather inadequate as an explanation. Instead, it seems possible, even likely, that those involved in the choosing did so with a certain delight in their own perversity.
It came about because nobody SAID ANYTHING.
All the years I was a Girl Scout, I never knew who was leading the organization nationwide.
The problems with celebrity architects: They don’t know local conditions, and don’t bother to find out or collaborate with local builders who do know. And why is that? They don’t care about anything but creating “cool” looking buildings that generate publicity: The real needs of real people are irrelevant. And don’t get me started on entertainment celebrities.
Having any semiauto rifle in other than .22 rimfire is illegal in the UK…
I’ve seen cryptic comments like that before. Rimfire vs. centerfire = where the firing pin hits the cartridge, right? Why would the law care about that? I would have assumed that the law would only care about the size of the round.
As far as appearance goes, this one is a WE brand Airsoft, photo from a UK Airsoft forum.
Yes, you could be right there.
Rimfire vs. centerfire = where the firing pin hits the cartridge, right?
Correct, in general the most common .22 rimfire for rifles is the, oddly enough, .22LR (long rifle) which with a typical bullet weight of 40 grains (also common) has a muzzle energy of about 130 ft lbs at a muzzle velocity of around 1200* FPS.
However, regarding the size of the bullet, an M4 (or the real L85A2) fires the 5.56NATO (centerfire), the bullet of which is a whopping .223, but with the standard 55 grain bullet has a muzzle velocity of around 3200 FPS and a muzzle energy of around 1300 ft lbs.
For comparison (and our friends in the UK) the .303 British with the 174 grain bullet leaves the muzzle at about 2500 FPS, and has a muzzle energy of around 2400 ft lbs.
*[Key word around, there are ballistic tables you can look up precise numbers]
Farnsworth: Thanks. But why does the law care about rimfire vs. centerfire?
All the years I was a Girl Scout, I never knew who was leading the organization nationwide.
I wouldn’t expect the little girls, even the older ones (though see what someone said above about Boy Scouts) to say or notice the problem even if they did encounter this person. Mostly. But there were adults, parents, troop leaders etc. who had to notice this person did not belong in this position. Even in this specific situation of the police investigation, there are cops, chiefs, administrators, etc. who know that sending out police to investigate this mother is flat-out stupid and wrong. But they say nothing.
Again, Burke was it?
But why does the law care about rimfire vs. centerfire?
Damage, they are considered “safer” or less lethal due to the generally lower energy.
Because in general the only rimfire one is likely to come across are the low velocity, low energy rounds such as the .22LR (there is a .22 magnum with a muzzle energy of 300 ft lbs). There are less common rimfire cartridges, e.g, .17 Hornady with a muzzle energy of around 240 ft lbs, and there are several obsolete rounds.
By contrast, the smallest centerfire I know off offhand is the .17 Hornet with a muzzle energy of around 550 ft lbs. A typical 9mm handgun round clocks in at about 350 ft lbs (can go much higher).
The “so what” is that in general centerfire cartridges will have higher muzzle energy (due to higher muzzle velocity – KE=1/2MVe2) which, broadly speaking, translates to more damage, e.g., more injury or chance of killing, or penetrate a wall and nail your neighbor, hence why they would be deemed illegal over centerfire.
Again, that is broadly speaking, if you fire a .22 Short (80 ft lbs) and hit someone in the aorta, unless that person is already on an operating table, most likely he will join the choir invisible. .22 also have a nasty habit of bouncing around in a body depending on what they hit, for example, hit a rib and bounce into the spleen, so unless we just consider the esoterica of things like wound cavities, the notion of safer or less lethal is an odd one indeed.
Best COA, of course, is not to get shot…

I’ve read the Malicious Communications Act a dozen times trying to find where these charges stem from and I’m flummoxed. The act states that the communication must have intent to cause distress or anxiety by way of a message which is indecent or grossly offensive, a threat or is known or believed by the sender to be false.
Not sure how any of that applies. So much of it requires those making the charges to know what the sender thinks and believes, which is, of course, impossible. So many laws today are so poorly written that it’s shocking they can be implemented at all. Have courts not also struggled with who gets to determine what is indecent?
The only thing that appears to be malicious in this case is the zeal with which the authorities have chosen to implement it.
Islam turns out to be right about women and their protection, or at least better than this human rights managerialism with its best practices and evidence-based guidelines to achieve the noble goal of getting perverts into the same room as children.
Turns out that fatherly authority – my daughter will not under any circumstances be joining – is a better safeguard of children. And communal consensus on what a threat is, with followup action of the high sort (turning the attention of the human rights apparat from trans- to Islamo-phobia), and of the low sort (if you go near our children, you’ll have me and my 60 cousins to deal with.)
So many laws today are so poorly written that it’s shocking they can be implemented at all. Have courts not also struggled with who gets to determine what is indecent?
It’s done on purpose. Also in contracts and building codes and on and on. The courts are not struggling. The worse the law the easier it is on the court. If the law is vague enough, it gives the court pier to do whatever they damn well please. Who’s to stop them?
In the meantime the rest of us should just sit back and enjoy the show.
From the camps, I suppose.
Why does this thing never happen to the Boy Scouts? Sure, it has its problems with NAMBLA members seeking authority roles within it, but should a father tell such a person in not-so-subtle ways that they run the risk of vigilante justice, no one gets summoned by the police. It’s almost as if women are . . . targeted.
It is because women tend to go about this in a very social way. Why would the police be so concerned about the “misgendering”? Because the female leadership of the organization were unable to discreetly handle internal communications. Either they showed the letter to the guy or some kindly, female administrator took offense on his behalf.
I wonder if there is a way to test the system with a parent from a different subgroup writing a similar letter without the referring to the man as a man. Would he be sacked? Would that second parent be ignored or attacked in some fashion?
The simple solution would be similar to what has happened to the U.S. Boy Scouts: leave the organization.
The act states that the communication must have intent to cause distress or anxiety by way of a message which is indecent or grossly offensive, a threat or is known or believed by the sender to be false.
Maybe this is not actual law, but my recollection is there has been at least a push in recent years to enable prosecutions based on communications being perceived as offensive. Or was that in Australia?
Why does this thing never happen to the Boy Scouts?
It does. It doesn’t get press because no one cares what happens to men and boys.
And pace WTP, despite having their own sex-segregated organization Guides and their mothers waged years of legal warfare to force the Scouts to let them in while keeping Guides girls-only. My sympathy is limited. I believe the appropriate word is “checkmate”.
chose not to use the comic book Maus to teach about the Holocaust
I have no idea what the board’s reasoning is but I own a copy of Maus and I wouldn’t use it either. It’s an interesting artifact and perhaps it has a place in a university survey course on the Holocaust in popular culture, but it’s a comic book. High school students are more than capable of reading The Diary of Anne Frank.
The point is the convoy itself. To show that you’re not alone. To show that you’re not the crazy one; they are.
The term for that is preference cascade. We saw it with Brendan Straka. It’s easy to forget that we actually outnumber them; they just control the levers of power. But pace Frank Herbert it’s not who controls the supply chain; it’s who controls the flow of the supply chain. The convoy is more than capable of literally starving the country of Canada into submission. And that’s probably what it’s going to take.
“Rimfire” is also what happens about 3 hours after eating a particularly spicy curry.
Be safe out there.
RE the Boy Scouts: I, having gone from Cub Scout through Eagle Scout myself, refuse to let my son anywhere near that organization. Searching for alternatives reminded me of car shopping. Ultimately I decided that simply taking him on hikes and teaching him what I’ve learned was the best option – for both of us.
I remember when trans activism first started to come into the mainstream, when the sophisticated types insisted that “man” and “woman” should be terms that referred to expressions of social roles (or somesuch). However, said sophisticated types also insisted that “male” and “female” would be reserved for biological phenotype (before going on to insist that we also need words for intersex individuals, etc.).
I didn’t believe them then; I just wondered whether or not they believed it themselves.

“Fred Colon and Nobby Nobbs, having been roused from their lengthy coffee break, proceeded gently up Broad Way, giving the ol’ uniform an airing …
“They had chosen this particular street because it was busy and wide and you didn’t get too many trolls and dwarfs in this part of town. The reasoning was faultless. In lots of areas, right now, dwarfs or trolls were wandering around in groups or, alternately, staying still in groups in case any of those wandering bastards tried any trouble in this neighborhood. There had been little flare-ups for weeks.
“In these areas, Nobby and Fred considered, there wasn’t much peace, so it was a waste of effort to keep what little was left of it, right? … Whereas in big streets like Broad Way there was lots of peace, which, obviously, needed keeping.”
Terry Pratchett, Thud!
I’m convinced there’s a plan behind all this terrifying nonsense, and the objective is not the well-being and happiness of normal-people.
I don’t think there is a plan.
It is a virus which originated among continental European intellectuals and spread to Arts faculties in America and has now leaked into the general population having infested every organisation that was traditionally left wing with a primary emphasis on economic redistribution.
It has no articulated ideology- it just destroys. It shapes itself by destroying all the social norms that have underpinned society. The life blood of conservatism in West was Christianity. Without that conservatism in the west is largely without an intellectual underpinning or any sense of moral certainty. It’s resistance to the virus is weak- unlike the resistance to “orthodox” communism for most of the 20th century
Lest we forget- the willing adoption of woke policing has been done largely in the 12 years in which a self-styled Conservative government has been in power in Britain.
It is like any ideological based revolution, minus the bloodshed so far. Once a certain stage is reached any moderating tendency is brushed aside.
It is the Terror without the guillotine. The Khmer Rouge without the extermination.
It is driven by people who would happily have been Stalin’s snitches, Mao’s Little Shits etc.
From the camps, I suppose.
Exactly.
My it gives the court pier to should read “gives the court power”…though in some sort of fancy-shmancy, tooty-fruity get me an “A” in English it probably works as “pier” as well. I’m not that fancy-shmancy, tooty-fruity. Well, definitely not tooty-fruity…that’s kinda…never mind.
I have no idea what the board’s reasoning is but I own a copy
The board had issues with the word “bitch” and that a mouse or two or three or whatever, a cartoon mouse, was in some way naked. Though I could not find a picture of it in my search through dozen(s?) of articles screeching about CENSORSHIP!!!! and BAAAAANNNNNED BOOOOOOOKS!!!
I have long thought that the trans mafia activism which is infesting and feels like it is taking over everything is the white man’s way of getting their own back from the feminazis, and maybe even the BLM types and the ones who cry islamophobia if you look at them wrong. Where else can a white man get this much boot licking power in today’s western world? Amazing how they go from being the cause of all the world’s troubles to top of the victim totem pole just by putting on a frock and some lipstick. They’ve pretty much beaten the feminazis who folded like a cheap suit, but the BLM types and their critical race theory grift and DIE enforcers are not going to be so easy. Ditto for the muslims.
