You’ve Seen What We’re Doing And So We Must Punish You
I paraphrase, of course. Though not by much:
The hired facilitators asked each member of the department to respond to various personal questions about race and racial identity. When it was my turn to respond, I said “I don’t feel comfortable talking about that.” I was the only person in the room to abstain. Later, the facilitators told everyone present that a white person’s discomfort at discussing their race is a symptom of “white fragility.” They said that the white person may seem like they are in distress, but that it is actually a “power play.” In other words, because I am white, my genuine discomfort was framed as an act of aggression. I was shamed and humiliated in front of all of my colleagues.
I filed an internal complaint about the hostile environment, but throughout that process, over the course of almost six months, I felt like my complaint was taken less seriously because of my race. I was told that the civil rights law protections were not created to help people like me. And after I filed my complaint, I started to experience retaliatory behaviour, like having important aspects of my job taken away without explanation…
What passes for “progressive” today at Smith [College] and at so many other institutions is regressive… and I fear this is rapidly leading us to a very twisted place. It terrifies me that others don’t seem to see that racial segregation and demonisation are wrong and dangerous no matter what its victims look like. Being told that any disagreement or feelings of discomfort somehow upholds “white supremacy” is not just morally wrong. It is psychologically abusive.
Of the people being degraded and stupefied by “critical race theory” – and there are a lot of them – some, a few, are daring to object, albeit belatedly. Those who do, however – like Ms Jodi Shaw, quoted above – may find themselves being told that they are “in need of further training,” which is to say, more of the aforementioned psychological abuse. Iterations of which can be found here. By politely questioning the assumptions of “critical race theory,” and by drawing attention to its non-reciprocal premise, Ms Shaw is apparently a danger of some kind and requires yet more indoctrination, and more bullying, “before she can safely interact with students and fellow staff.”
Update:
Via Darleen, and very much related: Can you “try to be less white”?
I.e., “less oppressive” and “less ignorant”?
Well, can you, punk?
I was told that the civil rights law protections were not created to help people like me.
Record them. Sue them.
Three rules to live by:
1) Don’t give loaded guns to monkeys.
2) Don’t give power to diseased minds.
3) If you have to choose, armed monkeys are the lesser evil.
It is difficult to feel too much sympathy for a person who attempted to feed the tiger and got her hand bit off.
It’s worth noting that the objections one might raise regarding “critical race theory” and its implementation – objections raised here many times and in three of the links above – are by no means esoteric. They’re pretty obvious and straightforward – among the first things one might think of. And yet, among the woke, it seems they don’t occur. And if raised by others, it seems they’ll result in, at best, bewilderment, or more likely, hostility.
And hence the word stupefying.

Absolutely this. And RTWT.
Can you “try to be less white”?
Well, I suppose I could always try blacking-up. Wait, what do you mean that’s also problematic? So let me get this straight. You want me to be less white, but also my becoming less white is also an issue. I see…
You’ve Seen What We’re Doing …
Is it any wonder conspiracy theories are proliferating when everywhere you care to look there are visible signs of what seems to be a successful takeover?
No shots were reported, no Post Offices or Television towers occupied, no walls pulverised, yet apparently here we are.
Interesting. Some of the most oppressive, arrogant, certain, defensive, ignorant people of the past century have been non-white – Mao, Pol Pot, Mengistu, Amin, &c., &c. Not to mention murderous.
This rather helps explain the phenomenon, I doubt he is unique among academics.
“When it was my turn to respond, I said “I don’t feel comfortable talking about that.”
Yeah, no. The proper response to a “facilitator” is “go F*** yourself. Preferably with a pineapple or similar. Now where’s my manager so I can file a complaint?”
Trying to reason with a snake will only get you bit.
Not enough lampposts, not enough rope.
Now where’s my manager so I can file a complaint?
Like her manager f##$&@g cares. Like management has no idea WTF is going on in these classes? WTF have you been the last 25-30 years? Does the name Jane Elliott ring a bell for you? Conservatives…”conservatives” are all strong and brave in the abstract, but mostly worthless chickenshits in the real world when the chips are down. Ask me how I know.
Was she the broad who remembered something, something that no one else ever saw on TV?
*yawn*

Also….On that link…back then I was posting under my RW initials, KRW. Search on KRW and refer to those comments in regard to “ask me how I know”. It was a result of things like that that made me think I should distance my personal opinions a bit from my real-world persona in case the HR/PC culture came looking for me. It’s 12 years later and I now (obviously?) don’t give (much of) a crap.
The hired facilitators asked each member of the department to respond to various personal questions about race and racial identity. When it was my turn to respond, I said “I don’t feel comfortable talking about that.”
I’m guessing that this would not have been a good time to bring up IQ scores. Or high school graduation rates. Or felony conviction rates. Or murder rates.
It is difficult to feel too much sympathy for a person who attempted to feed the tiger and got her hand bit off.
Ms. Shaw was a librarian, a group which has been noted here before as being the most viciously woke of them all. I have rummaged about in my steamer trunk of f*cks and come up empty, I’m afraid.
The Purity Spiral
I remember having to study Critical Race Theory as back as the 1970s.
Of course, that was in a school outside of Johannesburg, and so of course they used the local Cape Dutch word of “Apartheid” (apart-ness, or separation).
It’s surprising how well those lessons have stood the test of time.
Oh, certainly, the Boers (whites) and Bantus (blacks) have switched sides now, but it’s the same logic, the same rationales, and the same justifications, pretty much point for point.
Is it any wonder conspiracy theories are proliferating when everywhere you care to look there are visible signs of what seems to be a successful takeover?
These things do often have a Quatermass vibe. And I suppose that’s the thing. If the environment is sufficiently dementing and unmoored from reality – if, say, it’s inverted, morally and psychologically – and if the rules of dementedness are dutifully observed by enough statusful people, then it can leave the victim wrongfooted. They may even assume, “It can’t be this insane. Maybe it’s me. Maybe I’m just not getting it…”
Read the thesis. R. DiAngelo is a talentless hack — err, was at least a talentless hack when she wrote the dissertation.

The Purity Spiral?
I thought that was the mini whirlpool that I see when I flush the toilet and all the ‘waste’ disappears.

There could be some intersectional conflict, though, for taking a step back:
What if it was German or Chinese ?
Not really related, the left can’t meme…
So if a co-worker of color acts oppressive, arrogant, defensive, ignorant, overly sure of himself or downright conceited to the point where he won’t listen to instructions, what do you do? Tell him to stop acting so white?
I need answers!
To Conduct A Privilege Walk.
A few years ago I was taking “training” to do volunteer work, ostensibly to work with/help people on the margins of homelessness. It is somewhat a thing with me as my mother’s father died in the the depths of the Great Depression (1931) but she and two brothers and mother persevered. The training went on and on with a class every couple of weeks for months. What finally caused me to loose patience with the idiocy was having to do a Privilege Walk. One administered by a couple of millennials who themselves were raised far more privileged than I had been. If my mother had to do one of those things she would have been at the very back of the class. What bullshit.
If my mother had to do one of those things
An uncomfortable hatefact is that the Irish diapora in Canada and the US suffered massive legal and social discrimination as well – well-earned discrimination, if I’m honest. It took concerted, persistent effort by religious leaders exhorting the Irish communities to clean up their act to rehabilitate them.
Then again, the social dynamics were different. There weren’t massive swaths of the establishment telling Irishmen that their violent, drunken culture of spawning children they couldn’t afford was A-OK and anyone who exhorted them to change it was Irishist.
An uncomfortable hatefact is that the Irish diapora in Canada and the US suffered massive legal and social discrimination as well…
My father and his parents were called “hunky” and it wasn’t because they were sexually attractive. Eastern Europeans faced discrimination after the Irish became respectable.
Those darn wypipo and their ice skating in the late 1700s.
Meanwhile, over at goggle, https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9280297/Google-ethical-AI-unit-leader-tweets-Im-fired-amid-investigation-handling-documents.html . They have created a woke vortex that they can’t control. It sounds like these people are implicated in serious security breaches, and are now screaming Mysogyny/racism. Will be interested to see how this is played out, or if it gets buried. Might cost goggle a few sheckles.
…now screaming Mysogyny/racism…
Speaking of which, police brutality…
…or maybe not.
ATTICA ! ATTICA ! ATTICA !

While getting a master’s degree in EE from Stanford is no mean feat, it would be nice if these people didn’t work quite so hard to live down to the stereotype.
And from a summary of the paper that got her fired:
I’m kind of with Google on this one.
ATTICA ! ATTICA ! ATTICA !
Thanks for that. It deserves a post of its own, I think.
I’m kind of with Google on this one.
I once thought that Google employees must be the absolute cream of the crop, but the more I read about their “research” and their corporate behaviour, the more I’m coming to the conclusion that they are really very dim bulbs.
This researcher, Timnit Gebru, co-lead of Google’s ethical AI team, invested a lot of effort and Google’s money in demonstrating that AI work – her work – was (supposedly) damaging the environment, and “marginalised” communities and “perpetuating harm” against minorities.
And so they fired her.
???
Whites are always wrong, a classic double bind. Reject it and it’s a Kafkatrap. The only winning move is not to play, if you can. I expect people to start getting fired or demoted for walking out (“failing to comply with conditions of employment”), and many lawsuits to follow. The question is whether you can find a contingency-fee attorney to take your case in states that are hotbeds of this sort of stuff, like CA or NY. I wouldn’t be surprised to see attorneys who take such cases have their license threatened for violating the bar’s “diversity” mandates.
I once thought that Google employees must be the absolute cream of the crop
They used to be. The thing is all the hard technical work has already been done and while there’s still some interesting research in small parts of the company they’ve been in station-keeping mode for a while now. Much of the top flight talent has left and the company has been turned over to the marketing suits. Same thing happened at Oracle, Microsoft, IBM – any large technical company, really.
I’m lucky to not have yet to deal with this nonsense because I work for a small business that isn’t entirely bat shit crazy. It may only be a matter of time though. It’s going to get interesting when my reply is “Go fuck yourself. You’re the racist.”
