That feeling when you’re a teaching assistant and in your communications class you play a Jordan Peterson clip about pronouns and freedom of speech, hoping to spur discussion, and you then get reported and hauled in front of faculty and the manager of the university’s Gendered and Sexual Violence Prevention and Support Office for a ritual scolding, during which you’re accused of remaining politically neutral, which is deemed both a “problem” and in itself “threatening,” before being accused of “gender-based violence.”
The teaching assistant in question, Lindsay Shepherd, has, at the time of writing, been allowed to keep her teaching position at Wilfrid Laurier University, Ontario, but must now file copies of her lesson plans in advance for vetting and must allow faculty members to sit in on her sessions as and when they wish. Presumably, to head off any further political neutrality.

The recording – which I recommend hearing in full – offers a handy window into the fever-dream world of many Clown Quarter educators, whose incoherence is matched only by a compulsive self-flattery. (As when the professors declare themselves, at some length, the arbiters of scholarly standing and academic rigour, as being “public intellectuals,” while denouncing the notion that ideas might be discussed in a university classroom.) But then, the man is apparently on a par with Hitler.
And then there’s the admission that students must be not be allowed to arrive at their own determination of whether Peterson has a point worth discussing, and instead must be told, emphatically, in advance, that he’s a Very Bad Person, someone either to be hated or ignored. And of course there’s the eye-widening projection of it all, in which basic academic standards of enquiry, and any reference to reality, are deemed to create an “unsafe” and “toxic” environment, unlike the mediocrities peddling this nonsense with institutional authority, an air of bullying, and audible satisfaction.
But whether it’s delusional or merely dishonest, it’s quite jarring to think of such people having any kind of influence over someone’s children.

Incidentally, Jordan Peterson has one or two trans admirers, and there are transgender people who are happy to chat with him about ideas, and language, and about being an anomaly, without resorting to theatrical indignation, fits of victimhood or other passive-aggressive tactics. And in terms of furthering social acceptance, I’d suggest that these people are doing a much better job than the censorious scolds found on campuses. Indeed, one of the implications of the sinister farce at Wilfrid Laurier University is that conversations like this one, in which Dr Peterson talks with a trans woman named Theryn Meyer, and which I recommend, should not be aired in class either. Presumably for fear that students’ misconceptions might be corrected.

If it induces a dedication to academic anything at WLU, that would be an improvement.
WLU is not the most politically active campus in Canada – that honour goes to the University of Guelph or perhaps Concordia – but as old-school Canadian universities go, it vies with Carleton and Ryerson (which has been mentioned here before) for being the bottom of the barrel academically.
She claims she’s very probably going to leave WLU after this semester. It’s the best decision she could make.

Aside from it reading as if it had been written by the pomo generator, I am not sure he knows what the “thinking outside the tower” in the title, “Complex Singularities; Adventures in Thinking Outside the Tower”, really means.
As best I can tell, the notion is that expressing disagreement with (or deliberately exposing someone to disagreement with) something that a student (or at least the right kind of student) considers a core part of their identity is regarded as an assault on their sense of self, and therefore an implicit act of violence that makes said students feel unsafe.
It’s like the panel doesn’t even understand the logic of their own position well enough to express it.
And here’s course coordinator Herbert Pimlott, whose political leanings are unlikely to surprise you, and who can also be heard in the recording, as when mocking Peterson’s claim that the left holds worrying power in academia. Presumably, we’re supposed to think that it doesn’t and that the very idea is silly. And yet the farce above. And yet almost everything here tagged ‘academia’.

Yes, the mix of vanity and obliviousness is quite funny. It doesn’t make any sense to me. I’m a guy whose daughters buy the Oxford English Dictionary (the full one, not the Shorter)as a present, knowing I’ll read it for pleasure. I like words, long ones especially, but his bio makes no sense at all. That grad student needs to leave that University as soon as possible.

We should remind ourselves of what Peterson’s purportedly heinous stance is (given that the Laurier henchpeople liken him to Hitler). And that is that he disagrees with his opponent, Nicholas Matte’s view that: “biological sex” is a “popular misconception”, also Matte’s view that “male and female” are similar misconceptions. And Peterson is fundamentally is opposed to being compelled to use invented words: zhie, zay etc.
What I want to know is: how come Shepherd was expected to castigate Peterson, while ignoring the above utterly unevidenced biological howlers of Matte which would appear to wipe out 65 million years of evolution? I am assuming Laurier have a biology department – and would be curious to know if they are permitted to teach factual biology?

Academic authors are writing progressivism into their textbooks now. If you teach the couse as designed you have to teach these ideas. If you introduce contrary viewpoints you may be found to have deviated from the specific learning objectives, putting your future in jeopardy.

The senior staff, Rambukkana and Pimlott, are essentially saying that there should be no discussion as to whether Peterson’s views are correct or not, even his statements of fact, for fear of them gaining traction. Instead, it seems, his views should be instantly and unequivocally condemned because – well, because. And failing that, one simply shouldn’t think about them or acknowledge them in any way.
Because it’s a university and we don’t do that thinking business here.

My father studied forensic medicine at Glasgow in the 1950s under Prof. Glaister, who literally wrote the book on the subject (although his father was even better known), and considered his lectures a failure if students weren’t ill.
And he wasn’t wrong. There’s a serious point here: if you can’t hack the subject matter, you shouldn’t be studying it in the first place. Okay, the university has a “duty of care” over its students mental health. By all means put up a warning. But it should read, “This lecture may contain images that some students find disturbing. If that’s you, get out and stay out. You are clearly unsuited to the subject.”
