Writing in the Independent, consultant psychologist Glenn Wilson reminds us of the benefits of, er, paedophilia:
In my studies of the Paedophile Information Exchange in the 1980s, many members admitted sexual feelings for children which they had been able to contain or turn to social good. Some gravitated toward occupations such as schoolteacher or social worker, where they could enjoy the company of children without plotting abuse. This fitted with personality profiles indicating that they were gentle, rational and not disposed to harm anybody.
It is, I think, commonly understood that people who fantasise about having sex with children who cannot legally consent – which is to say, who fantasise about raping children – often gravitate to jobs which place them in regular and intimate contact with their potential prey. And this, apparently, is a “social good.” Because every parent wants their child to have a teacher who harbours fantasies of molesting them.
Update:
In the comments, David Gillies adds,
People who have a yen for shagging kids but no wish to act on it do not join an organisation called Paedophile Information Exchange. We know that PIE was not a support group to help people to control and overcome their urges but to actively enable them and even normalise them.
And likewise, if a person bedevilled by fantasies of child molestation seeks out employment among children, this doesn’t exactly signal the best of intentions or a basis for applause. And yet Dr Wilson thinks we should approve of paedophiles who claim to remain celibate yet seek out employment in positions of authority over children, and intimate contact with children, where temptation will be concentrated, routine, and much easier to act on, should one be so inclined. Supposedly, we should regard this as a “social good.” As if we’d struggle to find enough teachers without this selfless contribution.
Another bizarre new frontier in identity politics.
“Much child abuse (perhaps 80%) is perpetrated by non-paedophiles, often family or friends.”
Newsflash, Dr Wilson. Those friends and family members are *also* paedophiles.
Glenn Wilson does have a cheeky smile.
When I was at secondary school, my friend’s younger sister – aged, I think, 13 – had attracted unwelcome hands-on attention from one of the teachers, a man in his thirties. I remember the commotion that was caused the following afternoon as said friend’s father gave the teacher in question a vigorous beating in front of his class. The teacher in question was never seen again. At least not by us.
where they could enjoy the company of children
Er…
Er…
Given the context, it’s not the happiest turn of phrase.
Because every parent wants their child to have a teacher who harbours fantasies of molesting them.
And if they don’t, it can only be because they’re hate-filled bigots. Apply the re-education clamps please nurse.
Dr Wilson has miscalculated here, as it’s still too early to present ideas like this without the vast majority of people feeling a teeny bit queasy.
A more clued up progressive would know that the next frontier to be trampled down, following gay marriage, is polygamy. Pedophilia is way down the road.
Twenty years down the line of this, are we going to see history being rewritten so the Catholic Church is remembered as a pioneer in the field of progressive morality for what was previously known as a scandalous epidemic of child abuse?
Wait a minute. I thought All Men Are Pedophiles: it said so in a movie; it must be true.

Which is why all primary school teachers are women. Because no women are pedophiles.
By the way – here’s what the Beeb has to say about the incidence of pedophilia (among men, of course – and note they have, as expected, a picture of priests).
Short answer? A shrug of the shoulders – but at most, one percent.

I think discussions like this are great. One can get so many words out of so little information. So let’s all say thanks for the clickbait.
What an asshat.
Also this editorial comment now appears at the bottom of the article:
This piece was edited on 23 October to remove a reference to victims wanting to “cash in” on episodes of sexual abuse in the past
No mention of the The Independent’s attempt to “cash in” on this cynical piece of click bait either.
” Paedophiles do exist, but there are very few of them and not all are child molesters”
I didn’t exactly have a deprived upbringing but I know let’s see 1.2..3 boys who were sexually assaulted by adults, and one girl (they’re the ones who have told me or others about it – presumably there are many more).
The only thing that surprises me about cycles of the left, is how few of their own supporters ever see the cycle or know what coming next.
In fairness most get gov money through employment or welfare so they have lots of $$$$ motivation to be selectivly blind.
I seem to recall from my German Lit days that Gustav von Aschenbach in Der Tod in Venedig was not a character worthy of emulation. But then, I attended a public university in the Midwest US, so what do I know.
Isn’t working in a job which puts temptation in your way every day a bit, well, dumb?
The words ‘fox’ and ‘hen house’ did spring to mind.
“… many members (of the Paedophile Information Exchange) admitted sexual feelings for children which they had been able to contain or turn to social good. …”
They said they had turned those feeling to “social good”. That reminds me that when someone puts the word social in front of another word it usually makes the phrase mean the opposite of the second word. E.g. social justice, social work, social enterprise.
Because every parent wants their child to have a teacher who harbours fantasies of molesting them
‘You’re saying you don’t fancy my kid? What’s the matter? My kid not good enough for you?
I denounce your paedophobia.
I seem to recall, dimly with the passing years, a male teacher who asked the ‘School’s Hottest Young Lady’ if he could help her put her stockings on after PE (this you understand in an era when young teen girls wore stockings). Perhaps he was just trying to be helpful but, as he was an oily creep who liked to insult children when there was no need, maybe I am not so sure…
Incidentally, the teacher mentioned above was by all accounts a “gentle, rational” soul and seemingly “not disposed to harm anyone.” Presumably, he didn’t regard his physical advances to minors – or the abuse of his position of authority and trust – as being in any way harmful. Certainly not enough to deter him. Whether the fallout of his behaviour changed his mind, I couldn’t say.
I wonder how many stories will start to come out about the SNP’s ‘Named persons’.
My moment of conversion about the ‘Independent’ and its Sunday edition started about ten years or so ago when I read a piece in the ‘IOS’ magazine about zoophilia, in which the reporter was interviewing blokes who fucked their own dogs, and did it in a ‘we must understand them’ type of fashion.
Naturally, I had one of these moments here:

So from raping animals to raping children. That’s great, Indie. You were a newspaper once. I’ll remember that as you descend even further into the midden.
sk60, I think you mean “peodophiliaphobia” nez pah?
“Much child abuse (perhaps 80%) is perpetrated by non-paedophiles, often family or friends.”
It’s surprising how many people fall for that. It’s like saying — and some people do say the — that “your home is the least safe place to be, since most injuries occur there”. Well, yeah, that’s where you spend most of your time. It doesn’t mean everyone should move one city over.
What do we want?
Nonce rights.
When do we want it?
OT
“Activists threw smoke bombs in a clash with police at London’s Eurostar terminal during a pro-refugee demonstration on Saturday night.”
‘Pro-refugee’? That’s a designation I never thought I’d see.
And why such vigorous enthusiasm for a policy whose future consequences they literally have no clue about?
It’s almost as if they’re never around to see the results of their handiwork …
In the strictest sense of the word this is correct: we punish actions not thoughts. I could have any manner of depraved daydreams running through my head but as long as I do not put them into effect (or even articulate them) then no opprobrium should attach to me—in fact how could it? But people who have a yen for shagging kids but no wish to act on it do not join an organisation called Paedophile Information Exchange. We know that PIE was not a support group to help people to control and overcome their urges but to actively enable them and even normalise them. It’s like the old joke: “I phoned the rape advice line but it turned out it was only meant for victims.” Glenn Wilson is either being disingenuous or a gullible twerp.

It’s hard to see the need for sympathy arising unless the person in question had attracted attention to their appetites. And the way that’s typically done – as mentioned above – tends not to go down well with parents. Unless of course we’re on the cusp of a National Celibate Nonce Coming Out Day.

Because even a nonce teacher is preferable to a Tory.
Is that how it works?
“Activist group”. Lol. As we know, ‘activist’ is the term the Left uses to describe their friends, usually people happy to put bricks through windows.
As for the 80% bit and most abuse taking place in the home – what they don’t tell you is that Mummy’s latest new boyfriend is far more likely to do it than Daddy. But they don’t tell you that, because that would be ‘judgemental’ about women.
I don’t think polygamy will be the next Big Social Issue Everyone Has Always Been In Favor Of. The reason is that I doubt the left can find anyone to oppose it. Muslims living in the west, and even a tiny handful of Mormon splinter groups (vastly exaggerated by media, of course) have been doing it for years. What with non-marital alimony, serial marriage, and the end of infidelity as cause for divorce, there’s nothing but a faint lingering cultural habit of monogamy standing in the way. The left won’t push for polygamy because it’s not transgressive enough. There are no deeply-held beliefs they can force people to abandon and denounce.
Pedophilia, though . . . that’s pure gold for the Left. Now that the Pope is a Leftist they can quietly drop the whole “awful priests buggering boys” construct down the memory hole and replace it with “misunderstood priests in love with boys but intolerant American society tries to destroy their beautiful relationship.”
I expect there’s a “controversial” movie screenplay already waiting to go into production, as soon as some inbred Hollywood halfwits can be found willing to whore out their underage daughter for explicit on-screen sex scenes. I’d guess the big push for pedophilia will be organized to coincide with the 2020 Presidential election campaign, so that liberals can be whipped up into a frenzy of tolerant and open-minded hatred for anyone who refuses to agree that child-fucking is right and good.

Before I went off to do other stuff, I had the misfortune to be a criminal lawyer in a large Northern conurbation. I dealt with quite a few child sex abuse cases and about 95% of them were instances of a step-dad or latest boyfriend interfering with girls in the 11-15 age bracket. The adults involved were usually (but not exclusively) from the poorer end of the social spectrum, chronically inadequate and hapless (the mothers, and about half of the crims) or psychopathic bullies & liars (the other 50% of the doers). Where the allegations came to light after many years, it was usually because the victims were themselves expecting children and the seediness, nastiness and moral turpitude of the acts perpetrated against them were somehow magnified by being expectant, and this prompted them to call the police.
Social services were often involved, (nay, virtually embedded) with some of these unfortunate groupings- one hates to call them “families”- but achieved the square root of bugger all, probably because of the newly prevalent fashion for remaining “non-judgmental”which meant that the chaos and squalor of their clients’ lives went unremarked.
This was in the early 1990s- using social media I noticed recently that one of the leading juvenile offenders of that time, a scion of one of those dysfunctional tribes, a prolific drug-taker, “twoccer” and burglar who, at the age of 13, was too young for a custodial sentence, recently became a grandfather. For the third time.
Sometimes, I think the end days are upon us.
My British friends will no doubt be bemused by the situation in Ontario’s public elementary school system. Our premier-cum-hag, Kathleen Wynne, a confirmed homosexualist (she left her husband and children to be with her girlfriend) was previously Minister of Education. Her ADM, one Bernard Levin, was a key figure in the design of the new ‘sex education’ curriculum which teaches children in grade 5 (roughly 10-11 years old) the actual mechanics of sodomy and fellatio, amongst other things. Mr. Levin was recently convicted on multiple counts related to child pornography, including counseling a ‘woman’ (actually a police officer) on how to ‘groom’ her 12 year old daughter to have a sexual relationship with the woman’s boyfriend.
Complaints that the new sex-ed curriculum was in part intended to make it easier for paedophiles to ‘groom’ and entice new victims were dismissed as scare-mongering, anti-homosexualist, racist, bigoted, and of course, ‘reactionary’.
s/ As they should. I can scarcely wait for the day when all God’s chillum are able to explore their sexual appetites from birth onwards, even if they don’t know what those sexual appetites are yet. There will always be people who will be able to help the ‘social good’. /s
Instapundit has an ongoing, seemingly endless list of female teachers who’ve abused their position.
A P.E. teacher, you say?

A P.E. teacher, you say?
Further to the incident mentioned upthread, the same secondary school also had a male PE teacher who was very attentive in his “monitoring” of the first-year boys’ showers.
I expect there’s a “controversial” movie screenplay already waiting to go into production, as soon as some inbred Hollywood halfwits can be found willing to whore out their underage daughter for explicit on-screen sex scenes.
If they really wanted to be controversial, they’d show the girl enjoying a post-coital cigarette.
At a fundamental level, the Left encourages child sexuality because it decouples children from their sense of themselves individuals, making them more malleable for the state. After having been underground for decades, pedophilia is coming to the fore as the new frontier for increased state control over individuals.

One of my camp counselors “enjoyed” my company. It took quite some time for me to recover. But I’m sure that part wouldn’t bother Glenn Wilson at all.
I’m just surprised it wasn’t in Salon.
