Her use of the word conform was particularly touching. Though I suppose we shouldn’t expect more from someone who’s chosen to piss away time and money on a degree in “Critical Disability Studies.” A pseudo-intellectual dumpster fire we’ve touched on before. And I marvel at the number of people who will nod and preen and deploy the word “ableist,” based on the assumption – or rather, the pretence – that having functional vision isn’t preferable to being blind.

Well, “Critical Disability Studies,” a division of Angry Studies, exploits the resentments one might have as a result of disability and redirects them towards non-disabled people, who are defined as The Problem, the inevitable oppressor, and then scolded for microscopic or entirely imagined insults. Which is some kind of compensation, I suppose.

I’m blind in one eye (childhood trauma), so I meet the legal definition of disabled, although I don’t really think of such. When asked how I do think of myself, I channel Callahan, and say “maimed”.
I am not offended in the slightest by terms like blind spot, blind sided, or any like terms.
I am offended my emotional cripples who have full vision trying to use my disability for their soapbox.
So if anyone here wants confirmation from a partially blind person that “blind spot” isn’t offensive to us, you’ve got it.
There’s a fully blind person in my condo who I see in the gym all the time. When people talk to him and use words like “see” or the like, and then apologize, he’s likewise unconcerned about the use of terms like that, and tells people not to worry about it.
I used to work with a guy who was completely blind. If someone said, “see you later” he might say “no I won’t”. The other person might stop and start to mumble perhaps thinking that he was offended. Then he would laugh – he was just jerking their chain. He knew every blind guy joke in the universe. This guy was the opposite of a victim and he was genuinely pissed off if someone acted or suggested that he was a victim. And he was fun at parties 🙂

IIRC there was a French monarch who, when bored with the ramblings of some courtier, would make a game of adjusting his point of gaze so as to make his blind spot cover the offending person.

Also in relation to autistics: Mind-blindness meaning the inability to understand that other people have Minds and thus their own perspective on life and then for autistics to be able to ‘read’ and understand the minds of said others.
I once taught at a school for children with degrees of [legal] blindness and we all used the various terms relating to sight and vision in a normal manner, e.g. “John look for your ball on your left!” The current precious and pretentious ‘sensitivity’ was not a feature of life then.

Further to the use of words pertaining to vision, I forgot to add that when teaching young children who were totally blind the use of “Look at me [or face me…] when speaking to me!” was a necessary correction as such children did not initially understand the social courtesy of orienting one’s head and thus face to the intended recipient in a conversation. They would speak to the general space. We understood that, but the general public was not always forgiving of such odd behaviour. Teachers also gave extra auditory cues to children so they knew where we were such as coughing or making some other noise.

If I recall correctly, there were deaf activists who militantly opposed surgery to allow children to hear for the first time as this would “destroy” the deaf community. They insisted that deafness was not a disability in any way. (I think I heard about this around 1980, but am very unsure.)

While I’ve no doubt that there are some who oppose the surgery on such grounds (every foolishness has its’ champion, as they say), for many deaf people, the cochlear implant can be as much a burden as being deaf is, possibly more so (link).
I’ve met two deaf people who’ve had the implant and rejected it after several months. Medical issues, cultural issues, and other factors were much more significant than ideology.
I lost sight in one eye when I was about 6. When I was in my 30s, they came up a super-duper contact lens and glasses paired setup that would restore “significant” sight to that eye. And it did. My vision loss is due to a damaged lens; I still have the optic nerve and etc., so this actually did give me about 60%-70% vision in my damaged eye.
At first, I was ecstatic. But I gave it up after two weeks.
The sensory overload was overwhelming. Going from monocular vision to binocular was something my brain couldn’t process properly, after almost 30 years of monocular sight. It screwed up my sense of balance, it gave me killer headaches, and I couldn’t focus to read.
If I patched over my good eye, a lot of those symptoms went away, although my sense of spatial awareness was messed up, and some other issues. But in the end, I was trading my existing vision in the good eye for not as good vision in the other, so we discontinued the testing.
If, god forbid, I lose vision in my good eye, I’d be back on that program in an instant, but in my case, the potential cure was worse for me than the disease.
So I can sympathize with deaf people turning down cures. I’m not saying that they should, by any means. But I’m aware that the decision isn’t as obvious as it sounds at first glance.

The people I was referring to said nothing about difficulties with treatments that restored hearing, only that deafness was somehow a good thing in itself–not that this detracts from the value of your observations. What the political situation is today with regard to restoration of hearing or any other sense I have no idea.

Well, if you believe that the sky is falling, that everyone but you is a fascist, with “white supremacy” everywhere, and all the rest of it – or if you have to continually pretend to believe these things in order to fit in with your peer group – if you feel obliged to live in a state of near-continual indignation – then it must be quite exhausting. And a little deranging. And even if it’s just a pretence, a fashionable dishonesty, as so much leftism is, it’s still hugely corrosive to one’s sense of realism and probity.

Given that the effectiveness of the Cheshire police force is less than exemplary, with increases in robbery and violent crime, it’s an odd indulgence. Though I’m sure that chiding people about their failure to adopt modish pronouns is much safer and less stressful than apprehending meth-addled burglars. And despite the moral preening, lectures about pronouns merely alert the public, and the taxpayer, to the distinct possibility that basic functions are being neglected.
