Well, I’m stumped.

LOL. I saw in at the cinema and liked it. 🙂
Saw *it*

Oh, it’s worth watching and is certainly enthusiastic. But it does feature some of the most laughable accents, and some bizarrely variable acting, to say nothing of the tone. Oh, and Keanu Reeves’ randomly changing hair colour. There are some great shots and images, for sure – Dracula turning into a six-foot pile of rats lingers in the mind – but the whole thing’s a wildly uneven shambles. And camper than Christmas.

Like Damian, I’m opting for the narrow definition of camp, in that the comical aspects should be (at least largely) unintentional.
Sadly, Richard Feynman proved right. Again:
A transgender man delivered a stillborn baby, drawing attention to larger issues about assigning labels and making assumptions in health care.

After seeing it in theater, a friend commented “the moral of this movie is ‘never lose your temper in a church'”.

I saw it again a while ago and the good bits are still good, and the camp bits are still… eye-widening. You really do have to wonder what the mood was in the editing suite.

Oh, that one is quite definitely far more stylized than anything at all stylish . . . .
Quite in parallel my uniform reaction of hipsters is Why utterly contrived!!??!?!. With style one gets to be elegant—No, not dayglo reflective or frantically disheveled and covered in labels and showing off overpriced suckerware tchotchkes, elegant.

The Other Half enjoys those.

That Tyler Durden. What a hater.
Re Yassmin wondering about the people she passes on the street: I can guarantee they aren’t thinking about her. 99% of us fill our heads with our own doings.
For one thing, let there be dancing in the streets, drinking in the saloons, and necking in the parlor! The Neko Atsume/Cat Collector game released new cats and new toys a month ago! Ladies, start your sashimi! New cats await!
And if new NA cats to collect doesn’t make Yasmeen feel better, I don’t know what could.
Please Note: It is NOT “Octopi” as a plural, but “Octopodes”. The root word is Greek, not Latin, and hence it must take the Greek plural form.
In Oldham, some people show us who they are:

The “elect”, like these Nice White Lady educational bureaucrats – “These decisions are being made because DOE leadership believes that skin color plays a role in how to get equity — that white people can’t convey the message”. The message is an anti-white message, and its measure of sincere implementation is that there be more Black Bodies and fewer White Bodies in positions of influence, yet these ladies thought they could carry on “conveying the message” without it circling around on them.
“Skin color”. So tired of the pretense that that’s the sole defining characteristic of race. Might as well claim that, aside from coat pattern, all canids are identical and interchangeable.
Reproductive isolation + genetic drift + differential selection pressures = sub-speciation, IE race or breed. Skin color is just the most immediately obvious, visibly distinct characteristic differentiating the various races, it’s by no means definitive. Sub-Saharan blacks, Australian Aborigines, and east Indians are all melanin enhanced, but no one (with a brain) will confuse one for either of the others. Likewise Swedes and Italians and Slavs, etc.
Yes, the races blur together at the boundaries, but so what? The electromagnetic spectrum does so as well, but red and violet are still distinct colors. Chihuahuas and Saint Bernards and Timber wolves aren’t exactly interchangeable even though they can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
I realize that “color” is shorthand, but I frequently think that many people have forgotten that and have decided that melanin count is the *only* distinction.
Ok, got that out of my system. Rant over.
hence it must take the Greek plural form.
Well who made that rule? I’m gonna continue to call them “octopi” and there’s literally nothing you can do to stop me.
there’s literally nothing you can do to stop me
You madman! You’ll kill us all!
No one has a problem with the word ‘polyamory’, despite its unholy fusion of Greek and Latin roots. And don’t even get me started on the word ‘buccaneer’.
This will end well.
You madman! You’ll kill us all!
Heh. Now I’m calling the single male ones “octopo” and the females “octopa”. Bwahahahaha! See what happens when you find a stranger in the Alps?
This will end well.
As noted before, it’s funny until it’s sinister.
Now I’m calling the single male ones “octopo” and the females “octopa”.
Did you just assume their gender?
This will end well.
A common observation is “it’s as if they want a race war.”
But in fact they are already waging a race war, albeit with very limited use of firearms. It’s just that one side has been mostly passive.
This also raises the perennial question: if American liberals are so moderate and reasonable–not crazed radical leftists at all–then why do they keep supporting and electing such extremists? The answer is left as an exercise for the reader.™ 😉
As noted before, it’s funny until it’s sinister.
It’s the blackest of comedy:
And yes there’s even more of this hippest of self-parodies: https://www.thenation.com/article/want-to-dismantle-capitalism-abolish-the-family/
^ From the comments to that tortured self-adulation upon faux enlightenment:
More or less, trailer park rube that s/he undoubtedly is.
hippest of self-parodies
Dismantle family and you’ll destroy civilization. Men with no acknowledged children have no stake in the future of their societies beyond their own lifetimes. Why work oneself into an early grave when doing so benefits oneself not at all? For one’s children, one’s bloodline immortality, sure. For someone *else’s* bastard offspring? Ha! Eat, drink, be merry, and screw the future.
So it wasn’t the 100 million or whatever murdered, the economic failures, the Orwellian societies, North Korea, Cambodia, China, USSR, Venezuela, etc. etc. etc. it was simply the pretentiousness of it all? Interesting.
Not to be rude to a new (maybe?) ally but it kinda jumped out at me.
hippest of self-parodies
I’ve heard American liberals describe that commie rag as “liberal”, which tells us something about liberals.
So it wasn’t the 100 million or whatever murdered…
Very possibly because it was written in heat and haste, and because a more extensive list of socialism’s failures would be less rhetorically punchy…at least I hope that’s why.
It’s the blackest of comedy
The jargon, it burns.
I think our moral and intellectual betters would love a full-out shooting race war. The problem is the rest of the population isn’t interested, especially now that interracial relationships are common among the peasantry. Go into Nordstrom sometime and count the white women with white children in tow and the white women with brown children in tow. Then go into Walmart and do the same thing. And it’s the Walmart class that fights the Nordstrom class’s wars.
I think in another 30 years America will look much like Brazil does now. A small upper class, a miniscule middle class, and a huge number of desperately poor people. (This is already happening in Silicon Valley.). And there will be a fair number of black people, a small number of white people, and a big bunch of brown people. (This is already happening at your local Walmart.)
So it wasn’t the 100 million or whatever murdered, the economic failures, the Orwellian societies, North Korea, Cambodia, China, USSR, Venezuela, etc. etc. etc. it was simply the pretentiousness of it all? Interesting.
Jeff Goldstein (of protein wisdom) has been on Twitter. In recent remarks about Alabama’s strategy to force Roe comes some turd in his timeline who elects to endlessly parse the abortion problem – and ensuing debate – down to the relative brilliance of what is effectively Irish street law on the matter, versus the alleged horrors of State courts in the US as eventual legal reformers of constitutional, federalist, and functional travesties like Roe.
To reduce abortion to how you make legal sausage and by what democratic process you can cleverly re-liberalize it – and to reject and block any attempt to lend back some perspective to the core issue, which said turd does – reminds one of the above: The problem of 100 million innocents killed has little bearing, just as another enormous number of dissected human babies shall have no bearing.
It may all be pulled from the ass or Marxism but it screams of humanity’s defining refusal to face whatever it insists on denying even if it’s its own species. Which I guess are the same thing.
“No one has a problem with the word ‘polyamory’, despite its unholy fusion of Greek and Latin roots. And don’t even get me started on the word ‘buccaneer’.”
I learnt recently that one of our Australian ravens is named officially ‘Corvus coronoides perplexus’. Literally ‘strange crow shaped crow’. Cute! Only, ‘coronoides’ is Greek, while the rest is Latin – infuriating!
“I learnt recently that one of our Australian ravens is named officially…infuriating!”
