Andy Ngo on media dishonesty and racial shakedowns:
The genre of “white people doing something to black people” is, by now, a well-established media genre that generates easy clicks. But there is also an unsettling subplot that few seem willing to discuss. Rashsaan Muhammad and Mattie Khan, the two people of colour who star in last week’s viral video, both act abominably toward a young woman they’ve just met… And it was Ms Khan, not the pedestrian, who instantly racialised the incident, while her male partner called the woman an “idiot” and told her that she doesn’t belong in the neighbourhood. Who’s the racist—not to mention segregationist—here?
The couple’s abominable behaviour didn’t end after that encounter and the publication of the video, however. Within hours, Ms. Khan named the bicyclist publicly and posted her photo on social media. Friends and followers of Ms Khan then continued the doxing, publishing more photos and personal details of the woman… Sha Ongelungel, who was recently profiled glowingly as a racial justice activist in the Guardian, published the woman’s employer information on Twitter and encouraged others to call or email them. They obliged and demanded that she be fired. Ms Ongelungel stopped responding after I inquired if she took any steps to verify the couple’s (false) allegation.
Previously and somewhat related: When “dismantling the white supremacist hetero-patriarchy” trumps little things like opening hours.
Heather Mac Donald on pathological academia and the barking left:
The epithets used by the left are simply reflex actions. They have nothing to do with reality. “White supremacy” is now the favoured term of art and it’s trotted out in situations that are ludicrous… We saw this during the feminist hysteria over the Brett Kavanaugh nomination. Those who defended the idea of due process… were accused of supporting “white supremacy” and “white privilege.” What was left out of the equation was that his accuser was also white. So how does race come into this?
And in unambiguous hate-crime news:
One of Britain’s police commissioners has called for a review of hate crime legislation after revealing that current regulations had forced his officers to question an elderly woman under caution for beeping her horn at another car… “An elderly couple turned up at a petrol station and there was a woman who had filled up with petrol in front of them,” [Thames Valley commissioner Anthony Stansfield] said. “She was taking ages fiddling around and the lady who was driving, who was in her seventies, peeped on the horn and out flew an Afro-Caribbean lady who screamed abuse at them, went into the kiosk, and reported it as a hate crime. We had to investigate it.”
As usual, feel free to share your own links and snippets, on any subject, in the comments.
And in emoji-related-umbrage news:

Regarding the Ngo article, all of this is battlefield preparation for allowing some segments of society to do what they want at the expense of others. If one is in danger of being publicly named and precluded from making a living for reporting a minor breach of public safety regulations, reports will cease to be made. Then the edges of the envelope will be pushed to see what new breach of public order, decorum or law can be eliminated by simply destroying any witnesses’ lives. Perhaps its time to add the fomenting of social media mobs to the list of things which constitute witness tampering/intimidation.

And the incident does rather hint at what happens if you give people the equivalent of free hits. They will be used.

As noted previously, it’s important to bear in mind that some people want to be offended and unhappy – it’s the premise of their status and inflated self-importance; it’s the thing that excuses all those titillating acts of malice. And so, there’s little point trying to engage with such people on their own terms, as if you could find some mutual accommodation short of your own humiliation and deference, or somehow make them less obnoxious. The hope that these creatures are amenable to realistic debate, or will ever admit error, or that they want anything besides the enjoyment of dominating you, is, as we’ve seen, quite misplaced.
Adjectives and justice don’t mix.
The intellectual mise-en-scene has suddenly been rearranged to accommodate a new sociological fad, the pluralistic society, in which all races and nationality groups live peacefully cheek by jowl, each maintaining and strengthening its racial and cultural identity…
Prior pluralistic cities (e.g. ancient Rome) had separate quarters for each group; they were not so foolish as to try to get them to live cheek by jowl.
If anyone can think of a successful counter example to this, I’m all ears.
The left’s hate will destroy them and I can’t wait.
You don’t belong here. We welcome everyone.

My first thought was Switzerland, but even that successful republic doesn’t really count, inasmuch as the various linguistic groups don’t really “mingle.” (My personal travels there have been limited, so YMMV.) I know that in towns which are divided linguistically, the French Swiss shop at the French markets, while the German Swiss patronize the German markets. The best thing to say is that they certainly don’t hate each other and consider themselves to be Swiss and not French, German or Italian. And of course, they’re all Europeans.
“The Melting Pot, which worked to some extent in the time of the Old Immigration when the ingredients were more racially and culturally harmonious, failed to do its job when the New Immigration was added. Melting Pot advocates seemed to forget that different races thrown together in the same environment rather than fuse are more likely to stratify and separate…”
If you don’t grind into the newcomers that *this* place is much better than the *old* place where you came from and that you’d better learn how to fit in her at the new place in order to keep things that way, then there will be no more melting in the pot.

Sonderbund War
I’m not sure how that fits in with my comment. As internecine conflicts go, it wasn’t much of war. Further, it wasn’t predicated on linguistic differences, but religious, and not all the RC cantons joined the Bund, IIRC. I don’t think it necessarily or greatly tarnishes the Swiss confederation after it split from Austria. My point was Switzerland doesn’t really fit the “cheek by jowl” definition above, given the linguistic separation in the country.
“I’m not sure how that fits in with my comment. ”
Fair enough. I had remembered reading something about Swiss resettlement between their Cantons to reduce internal conflict and had thought that article would discuss it. Since I can’t find anything about Swiss resettlement between their Cantons to reduce internal conflict on the net, I’ll assume that my memory is false.
Sorry for the noise.
Sha Ongelungel?

Well, hello, Lysistrata, how’ve you been?

Sorry for the noise.
No problem. If anything, it necessitated accessing portions of the memory banks which had several decades of dust on them, so thanks for that.
FYI; the authorities in Florida have stepped in to settle your argument, from a few threads back and arrested the now notorious chocolate-milk-thrower.
That’ll learn her.
Prolly not.
In other news, it’s good to see that the forces of law and order in this country have declared burning effigies is beyond the pale, and will not be tolerated.
*sighs*
Is it just me, or does anyone else fondly hearken back to when adults were in charge?
“You don’t belong here. We welcome everyone.”
Good grief, it’s hard to know where to begin with this one but I’ll try.
1. Someone named Susan Rothenberg is a Presbyterian minister?
2. A minister of a Christian faith films itself yelling intolerance at the top of its lungs at the motorcade of the POTUS?
3. File under things that never happened: Her neighbor calling to tell her they couldn’t get to sit shiva because of Trump’s motorcade.
“Is it just me, or does anyone else fondly hearken back to when adults were in charge?”
Most certainly not just you Julia.

That would seem to be the woke moral of the story. Presumably, the way to purge oneself of innate racism, of “whiteness,” is to hold minorities to much lower standards of behaviour and never acknowledge any infraction. Because hey, what could possibly go wrong?
It’s worth noting that the grievance-seekers’ account of their exchange, in the left-leaning Portland Mercury, doesn’t exactly tally with what we see in the video. “I tried to start a conversation,” claims Mr Muhammad, who is depicted by the paper as valuing communication and empathy. Which would explain the immediate hostility, racializing an issue that wasn’t about race, calling the woman an idiot, and then demanding that she “go back to [her] fucking neighbourhood.”
An anecdote of sorts:
My “exercise regime’ consists of plodding through a country park near Chateau Oik, listening to music as I go. The BBC’s “6Music” is my station of choice when not listening to albums, so Sunday morning found me tuned in (do people still use that term?) to the show hosted by former Catatonia singer Cerys Matthews. As the blurb says, it’s an eclectic mix and the choice of tracks is always interesting. I have long been charmed by Ms. Matthews’ looks and wonderful voice; she speaks with a breathy, musical but articulate Welsh accent. Unfortunately, she sometimes lurches into SJW territory, albeit if that means not playing stuff by Coldplay, James Blunt or Mumford & Sons then I am conflicted…
Last Sunday’s “Turnip, Fires and Ghosts” episode featured an interview with Sly5thAve, of whom I’d never heard but he turned out to be a talented saxophonist and arranger who had worked with Prince amongst others. He was there to plug his new album which consists of Dr. Dre tracks re-arranged in a Quincy Jones big band style. If the two excerpts played on the programme are anything to go by, what sounds as though it shouldn’t work turns out to be rather marvellous. “Sly” came across as a laconic and very polite man, addressing Ms. Matthews as “ma’am” throughout. The crucial moment came as she interrogated Sly about his upbringing in Texas. I’m going to paraphrase rather than transcribe:
CM: You were brought up in Austin, a musical city if ever there was one one, but also a beacon of liberalism and radicalism, an island in a big state of… [voice tails off]
S5A: Yes ma’am.
CM: So, being brought up in Austin meant you had access to musical instruments and tuition you wouldn’t have received otherwise?
S5A: Oh, no, ma’am. Music is a state-wide thing in Texas. The public education provisions are so good, it doesn’t matter where you are; if you want to get hold of a musical instrument and have somebody teach you, you can.
[Oik pictures Cerys Matthews swallowing a hard, jagged object].
It was a delicious moment.

I actually grew up about a mile or so up the road from there. Just spent the last half hour using Google Earth to, as it were, revisit my childhood stomping ground. There’s a rabbit hole you don’t want to fall down.

I’m sure it’s been greatly improved by all the diversity.
Where I grew up, a thousand year old village in the North West of England, looks much the same as it ever did except that non of the locals can afford a house there now…
I’m sure it’s been greatly improved by all the diversity.
The general area was never in danger of being thought glamorous, though as a child you don’t have much perspective – it’s just where you live. You tend to assume that all phone boxes, everywhere, are trashed on a weekly basis and reliably stink of piss, just like the bus stops do. Though the vast differences in human behaviour become more apparent as you grow up.
U.S. Election Update:
Polls opened here at 6:00 AM. I was in line at my rural precinct at 5:45 AM. When I finally got my ballot, it was number 327, which is a hair over 10% of the registered voters in the precinct. When I left, there appeared to be at least twice as many people in line as when I arrived.
Mr Sherman will now be liveblogging the US election for us. Hourly updates, please.

Alas, I’ll be spending my day studying college football point spreads for this upcoming weekend.
Still, I marvel at the shift in the politics of my county in the last two decades or so. We used to be a reliable Democrat bastion. But we were the conservative wing of the Democratic party. Reliably working class and farmers; Pro-life; Pro-gun; Pro Working man. For years there was not a single local Republican office holder. Now, these same people only vote Republican.
Why?
Because the Democrats left us. We did not leave the Democrats, and the place is a microcosm of what led to Trump in 2016. Of course, the Dems will not bother to study what occurred here, because we’re nothing but a bunch of white deplorables.

Where I grew up, a thousand year old village in the North West of England….
My home village is now four times the size it was when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s (in terms of population).
Long gone are: both the thriving pubs; the Methodist and Baptist chapels (the former was a magnificent building and home to the youth club); the printing and dyeing works where my grandfather was foreman plumber and the associated football and cricket teams; the newsagents; the chippy; the garage/filling station; the Post Office; the Liberal Club, with its ‘full size’ snooker table; both the grocers’ shops (“top” and “bottom” shops in local parlance); and the hourly bus service between the the two neighbouring larger towns. There isn’t a retail business of any description within the community.
It’s been like that for over twenty years, and it is now a dormitory village for Manchester or Burnley and Pendle. I’ve noticed recently that some sort of civic society seems to be returning in that the long-neglected kids’ playground has been refurbished by volunteers, and the village fete, a staple fixture of my youth, has been revived but I fear it’s all too late. I think the salient point is that none of this has come about via immigration, it’s all happened because of huge swathes of land being built upon, starting in the late 70s. People came in their droves to take advantage of the cheap housing, and a lot of the population are now ‘second generation’, but they mainly came from outside of our East Lancs. enclave with its peculiar (in every sense of the word) culture and I think they just couldn’t be bothered. It’s been sad to see this happen, albeit from a distance, in that I left in the late 70s and never went back unless to visit my parents.
To avoid such conflict in the future, we’ll just have to list the owner’s race directly on his/her license plate from now on.
Problem solved.
Problem solved.
Racial tagging, on everything. Perhaps some kind of barcode.
You’re right; barcode is better, so when I change my ever-fluid identity, everyone will know.
This could also prove useful when I look out a shop window and see a meter maid (he, she, or other) approaching my car.
… they mainly came from outside of our East Lancs. enclave with its peculiar (in every sense of the word) culture and I think they just couldn’t be bothered.
Indeed. People talk about ‘multiculturalism’ as if England wasn’t already chock-full of cultural diversity. Internal migration and the national broadcast media have helped to erase that diversity almost as much as immigration.
People talk about ‘multiculturalism’ as if England wasn’t already chock-full of cultural diversity.
Somebody once accidentally let slip the truth by proudly describing a school whose student population had become entirely black as 100% diverse.
Before you report illegal parking you have to check if the owner is black.
Diversity bullies like to condemn being raised in a healthy culture as “white privilege”, but a real example of privilege is immunity from the law.
A similar incident of cross-racial parking etiquette dissonance in Florida ended with one of the Persons Of Color getting shot in the chest and killed:
https://www.tampabay.com/news/publicsafety/crime/No-arrest-in-fatal-shooting-during-argument-over-handicap-parking-space_170174041
The shooter was later charged, after enough diversity had boiled up to demand it.
So, I’d say everybody in Portland got off lucky.
but a real example of privilege is immunity from the law.
The expectation of impunity, of not being subject to normal proprieties, is a fashionable conceit, one that’s actively, even hysterically reinforced by quite a few statusful educators.
As noted in an earlier thread, it’s hard to imagine a white student with white supremacist tendencies and a long criminal history not being expelled after repeatedly spraying deranged racist graffiti all over campus property, causing thousands of dollars of damage, and after threatening to kill anyone who tried to intervene. It’s also unlikely that such behaviour, by a white student, would result in lecturers abandoning their classes to “stand in solidarity” with him, and while demanding that “mental health support services” be made available to all white students, who, as a result of his arrest, were supposedly suffering from “post-traumatic stress syndrome.”
And yet.
Hourly updates, please.
Here in my micropolis we have one polling place, the community center. For the first time ever that I have seen they are using the ball field and basketball courts as overflow parking. In the immediately adjacent much larger micropolis all the polling places are similarly packed, more so than for the presidential election.
What this portends in the bigger picture I am entirely uncertain, but as we have county by county liquor laws, I did, being the repressive collectivist statist that I am, get to vote for allowing Sunday sales in ours. If the measure passes, anyone wanting to buy into Muldoon’s Fine Sunday Booze Shoppe, just let me know – David, you can be the sole importer of Night Nurse and other fine spirits.
If anyone can think of a successful counter example to this, I’m all ears.
I have one: The United States. I mean, if continuously falling homicides per capita and rising living standards aren’t your cup of tea then there are plenty of peaceful homogeneous utopias like North Korea and Congo to admire.
Voted in Hershey, Pa., about 1:30 p.m. They report 30 percent turnout, which is pretty good considering bands of showers have been moving through the area all day.
actively, even hysterically reinforced by quite a few statusful educators.
Are there any actual adults left on campus?
Are there any actual adults left on campus?
Note that the super-woke educators are encouraging a student to believe that he shouldn’t be subject to the same basic laws as everyone else, the same courtesies and restraints, and that any attempt to arrest him for repeated criminal behaviour is “racist” and an affront to “social justice.” And if Mr McDonald continues his criminal trajectory, while displacing responsibility for his behaviour onto some imaginary “white supremacy,” and at some point he encounters, and defies, a police officer with a gun…
Well, by then, the Angry Studies lecturers will have moved on to the next batch of suckers.
A “Vote Democrat” parody video I saw last week summed up the political/racial zeitgeist quite well I thought, with the spokeswoman saying to minorities:
Racial tagging, on everything. Perhaps some kind of barcode.
We could tattoo it on everyone’s left forearm.
