Have At It, Me Hearties
An open thread, in which to share links and then bicker about them. I’ll start, via Obnoxio, with a Guardian headline circa 2025:
Related, Francesca is a journalist. If all else fails, you can always poke through the reheated series.
I was laughing right up until I clicked the ‘Francesca is a journalist’ link.

Apparently, she’s “challenging the status quo.” And so she says “stay woke” unironically.
A hurricane cometh. Let the opportunist looting of our neighbours begin.
Via Julia.
And yes, we’ve been here before.
Apparently, she’s “challenging the status quo.” And so she says “stay woke” unironically.
She’s stunning and brave.
She’s stunning and brave.
Heh. I suspect that’s how she sees herself.
Ms Fiorentini’s idea of socialism, which she describes as “a breath of fresh air,” is somewhere to the left of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a woman whose grasp of economics and general mental wherewithal have entertained us previously. And according to Ms Fiorentini, if such policies, or incoherent ramblings, result in, as she puts it, “a mess”… well, apparently you just have to keep on making the same mess over and over again, until reality gives way.
Because socialism.
WTF is Corbyn on about? According to a Google search, there are only 195 or 196 countries in the world. Does the UK really want someone who can’t add up as Prime Minister?
ACTOF : not sure if serious? I think we get the governments we deserve. Hence Germany, Sweden and perhaps us.
One too many “Rs” in the headline and/or why you don’t skip high school biology
It’s a Norwegian Blue. Beautiful plumage, squire.
The next step beyond virtual reality, fully immersive, 360 degree, with total sensory input, and people actually call me a luddite.
Assume Socialism is a fancy baked good . . .
. . . which baked good exists solely in the fevered imaginations of a few, meth-addled bakers.
“You know what we don’t see enough of on twitter?
People from former socialist/communist countries saying ‘let’s have another go at it’.”
heh
A hurricane cometh.
But, remember: when businesses decide to move elsewhere to avoid all extra costs associated with being in a particular location, i.e. shoplifting, robbery, assault, etc., the problem is white supremacy.
…the problem is white supremacy.
Yes, but what isn’t ?
Every thing is white supremacy, Take 2:
One would think at some point these twits would realize they are auto-parodists.
But, remember: when businesses decide to move elsewhere to avoid all extra costs associated with being in a particular location, i.e. shoplifting, robbery, assault, etc., the problem is white supremacy.
Rinse and repeat. There’s more footage here, by the way. Note the masks and the air of impunity, even jubilation, as trolley loads of stolen goods are piled into the backs of cars and driven away.
The police were initially asked to stand down and let it happen, though after some deliberation a handful of the perpetrators were arrested. And it seems to me that exempting certain demographics from even the expectation of rudimentary morality, thereby encouraging criminality and what follows from it, ultimately does no favours for the people in question. It certainly doesn’t do favours for any law-abiding people who happen to live and work nearby.
And speaking of Ms Fiorentini’s favoured brand of socialism:
Here.
It certainly doesn’t do favours for any law-abiding people who happen to live and work nearby.
No, but it does provide the Professional Grievance Community plenty of opportunity once again to fail to recognize cause and effect and whine about “food deserts” and the like because the nice groceries/drugstores/etc. bailed for the predominantly wypipo/middle class neighborhoods where, for unfathomable reasons, they are less likely to get looted in an emergency.

We.
Don’t even, get him started on the pudding situation…
“We need a meat tax”
OK, Yank here needs help again. On the wallpaper (or wtf it’s called) on that New Statesman twit page, I recognize Corbyn on the left (can someone please buy that hobo a razor?), the lady cartoon next to him looks vaguely familiar but…don’t care, then on the right side of the text there is what looks to me like Chairman Mao. That’s not really Chairman Mao is it? ‘Cause I once heard from a British guy that if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain’t gonna make it with anyone anyhow. But of course, times have changed. But surely that is someone else, yes?
It certainly doesn’t do favours for any law-abiding people who happen to live and work nearby.
Recall as far back as the Rodney King riots in L.A., when some melanin-enhanced politician excused the mayhem and looting on the grounds that systemic poverty necessitated “mothers just tryin’ to get some milk for their babies,” under circumstances where “milk” is defined as televisions and Air Jordans. In other words, racism compels the looting and racism motivates a business owner’s refusal to be victimized.
It’s a good gig, if you can get it.
That’s not really Chairman Mao is it?
Given that the others are contemporary figures, I’m guessing it’s meant to be Xi Jinping. Problem is it doesn’t look much like him, or the current Kim.
However, the Staggers has been a byword for mediocrity for nigh-on a generation now, so the general crappiness of its Twitter masthead does not come as a surprise.
Some happy citizens of the Venezuelan workers’ paradise enjoy a day out in the countryside.

WTP:
Corbyn, May, Trump, Xi Jinping, Putin and Assad.
Damn wypipo and their… (shuffles Cards Against Humanity deck, picks card) breastfeeding.
David, that link to the Herald Sun was subscription blocked for me. Searching in Google on the text did get me there though.

Heh…didn’t see trump behind the text until I scrolled over something. That’s a crappy rendering of Putin if you ask me, but I got stuck on Xi and didn’t really look that far to the right. I did get Assad, though. After the fact. As NS being a socialist rag (right?) I presumed they would all be socialist heroes, hence not quite recognizing May.
So that’s two days in a row I got stuff f’d up. I’ll shut up now…

Re: bensix’s twitter responses … this one
Is this something new the kool kids are pushing? WTH is “scientific racism”?
“Reluctant white male”
Ah, another severely educated person. And then there’s this pious little boast:
Presumably, the gushing compassion that he pretends to feel doesn’t extend to all those white males that he doesn’t know but so proudly disdains in order to fit in with his equally preening and self-satisfied peers.
“We need a meat tax”
Better a tax on leftism in all its forms.
Scientific racism is supposed to be witty and endearing. And self effacing.
Geez, I tell ya, I get no respect no respect.
My experience with Quillette suggests that the main requirement is a complete inability to express even the simplest idea in fewer than 1,000 words.
“Scientific racism” is the type of science that acknowledges differences in average performance between so-called racial groups. Obviously, there can be no differences between so-called racial groups, since “race” is only a social construct with no real-world meaning, except when it comes to entitlements and preference programs – then it means something. That’s why the demographics of NBA players, concert pianists, and Fields Medal winners is damned-near identical.
That’s why the demographics of NBA players, concert pianists, and Fields Medal winners is damned-near identical.
As Amy Wax noted recently,
It’s the way of the woke.
One too many “Rs” in the headline and/or why you don’t skip high school biology
Is the Independent a joke newspaper? Like the Weekly World News in the US?
Makes me wonder just what they are teaching in high school biology these days. Something tells me neither the twit who tweeted or the “reporter” who gushed about it skipped any classes. I bet they can name all 79 genders, but don’t ask them about mitosis, chromosomes, or the fact that sperm needs access to an egg for even a chance at a pregnancy. And eggs aren’t found on men, or the ground, or in the air…
I forget where I read that tweet originally – Insty? – but one commenter made the point that if a woman is fertile 2 days a month, then why not keep her legs together for those 2 days? Seems logical to me, although the difficulty is predicting which days those 2 are… Still – it was taken as a blasphemous idea that a woman take responsibility for anything related to sex or her own body.
Reluctant white male
https://empathological.wordpress.com/2013/04/20/the-man-the-tylenol-and-the-toyota/
“In fact, if you’re a man who ejaculates multiple times a day, you could cause multiple pregnancies daily. In theory, a man could cause 1000+ unwanted pregnancies in just one year.
So even if you socially engineer 99% of the boys in town to be a “reluctant white male” who wouldn’t dream of etc etc (not that the girls want him to), all it takes is one local bad boy, or a traveling salesman, to start an illegitimate baby boom all on his own. Traditional societies found it more reliable to socially engineer 99% of the girls in town to be chaste – the maternity services aren’t going to be overwhelmed by one girl who can’t say no.
…Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a woman whose grasp of economics and general mental wherewithal have entertained us previously.
from wiki: “She graduated cum laude from Boston University’s College of Arts and Sciences in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and international relations.”
With those sterling credentials in mind, what utterly dumbfounds me is that her economics ideas are ridiculous, and that she says she doesn’t know much about Israel/Palestine.
Sam Duncan – thanks for the warning.
I reflexively click all links posted here, but was able to avoid that one.
Not a person who is typically squeamish – in my job I see and hear some extremely horrific things.
But for whatever reason animal cruelty/death is my ‘trigger’ (for want of a better term). I can never get those images or sounds out of my head.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a woman whose grasp of economics and general mental wherewithal have entertained us previously.
heh
https://twitchy.com/sarahd-313035/2018/09/18/she-must-withdraw-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-caught-in-a-highly-problematic-situation-pic/
So we kind of twist ourselves in knots, in that we have to embrace something but deny the factual underpinning of it.
That.
Ocasio-Cortez isn’t very wise, but even she knows enough to not know enough about Israel-Palestine. Any position she argues on it will be the wrong one, so better not to have one.
Her weakness will be Cuba, and to a certain extent Venezuela. Will she support Left wing regimes merely because they are left wing? To do so makes it obvious she’s a dogmatist. To not do so would enrage her leftist base.
It confuses me that the Democrats think the future is with the Hispanics. They are socially conservative, and on issues like Cuba and abortion are not natural Democrats.
O-C won because she’s Puerto Rican in a PR zone, not because she’s attractive to Hispanics in general. Oh, and it helps that she is attractive.
That.
Somewhat related – David Cole tries to follow the bewildering mental contortions of Roseann Liu, an assistant professor of Educational Studies at Swarthmore.
I have very little faith that the electorate sees through leftists, however unpleasant their ideas. The move to claim “niceness” as a specifically leftwing virtue has been horrifyingly successful, as the recent career of that turd Corbyn demonstrates.
A question occurs.
Via Ben.
The move to claim “niceness” as a specifically leftwing virtue has been horrifyingly successful, as the recent career of that turd Corbyn demonstrates.
Exactly. Quite how people have managed to persuade themselves that Corbyn is an avuncular peace-broker when even a cursory examination of his life’s work demonstrates that he is anything but, evades me.
Corbyn’s take on Venezuela- ““Venezuela is seriously conquering poverty by emphatically rejecting the neoliberal policies of the world’s financial institutions.”
Further to the cow-slaughtering above, here is some of that there rejection of neo-liberalism, with knives, dancing and, erm, “seasoning”.
Hi Chester,
From what I overhear in Mexican restaurants the Mexicans, at least, are not fond of the Cubans.
Or the Americans.
Your average politically correct Democrat would faint if she understood 1/10 of what she heard in a Mexican restaurant.
“Or the Americans.“
And yet here they are.
Think of socialism like a fancy baked good . . .
…and every time you try to bake one, the oven catches fire, the apartment building burns down, and everyone inside dies.
Is that any reason to give up? Of course not!
“niceness” as a specifically leftwing virtue
Something that occurred to me during the Pope’s recent visit to Ireland. It’s taken a long time, and a lot of horrific revelations, before we stopped assuming people who spoke for God automatically meant well. I think we need to learn the same thing about people who speak from the political left.
Because, obviously, “Pac-Man resonates with the current neoliberal condition.”
Via TDK.
“Pac-Man resonates with the current neoliberal condition.”
Smells like bullshit.
Smells like bullshit.
Judging by the publisher’s own blurb, it does sound a tad contrived.
Though of course it may be equal in its profundity to the work of Dr Ben Pitcher, who informed us that Radio 4’s cosy and innocuous Gardeners’ Question Time is in fact “saturated with racial meanings,” and its discussions of soil acidity and the Chelsea Flower Show are actually all about “the crisis in white identity.”
Hi PST314,
They’re here for the money, not because they like what’s left of American society. Most people know that NAFTA drove down U.S. wages, but not that it did the same in Mexico, where wages were lower to begin with.
“Reluctant white male”
It’s strange to watch this pathology spread:
If only they could sense how transparent and morally revolting their pretensions are.
Local NewsTV is getting woke. They ran a “Breaking News Alert” announcing that some parts of the city have better houses, and people have higher incomes than other parts.
A great deal of very expensive time consuming research by doctoral sociology students will be needed to prove the hypothesis that systemic racism and white people are the root causes, mostly the latter. p <.01 Government solutions to follow.
“If only they could sense…”
Not to mention suicidal. I don’t think they’ll get the race war they want, as most people have better sense, but individual people who’ve been properly Woke certainly might decide to bag a white guy here and there.
It’s strange to watch this pathology spread:
The disturbing scenarios are those in which it’s not mere pretense. Or in which it’s evolved.
If you’ve convinced someone that they don’t have any hope beyond the immediate, that everything bad is their fault and nothing they ever do will remain, is it so strange that a Stockholm Syndrome of sorts would set in? More so when the captor “generously” lets you have an ice cream every other day and pats you on the head for being responsive.
If S&M and humiliation porn are proven to have an appeal to some psyches, why not try to engineer an environment in which their societal analogue is hard to escape? In which the self-denouncement and fatalistic expression of nihilism is in itself an emotional release, and actually results in attachment-through-submission? It’s not for nothing Winston is said to have *loved* Big Brother in the end. Get things off your back in the struggle session, release oxytocin in the moment of relief you’re not off to the block just yet and are still accepted, and the “love” becomes real.
Back on the gruadriam headlines beat, I think Jeremy’s just tetchy that now he’s tried it, the pate cat food doesn’t taste as much better than the chicken as the price would suggest.
Also, J.A. Micheline wrote a piece on the ongoing “ComicsGate” furor and ended up writing a Classic Sentence:
“Unless comics creators adopt a zero tolerance approach to racism and misogyny, this abuse of power by ‘fans’ will never end”
Why yes. Customers are abusing their power, you see, by requesting what they want.
As well, she hit with “friendly fire” one of the gatekeepers *against* independent creators due to a past sin while attempting to virtue signal. “RACIST!” So sorry, Mark Waid.
Old white guy
Douglas Murray, The Strange Death of Europe.
“Still – it was taken as a blasphemous idea that a woman take responsibility for anything related to sex or her own body.”
It’s a blasphemous idea to the “social justice” Left that anybody except “right wing” governments and straight white men should take responsibility for anything.
“It’s taken a long time, and a lot of horrific revelations, before we stopped assuming people who spoke for God automatically meant well.”
Well, there was that little affair in the 16th Century. There are plenty of us brought up into a long tradition of refusal to trust men who claim holiness.
what happens when they meet… someone who says, ‘You think you’re miserable, terrible, and with no redeeming features? Well, we agree.’
Yes, quite.
They’re here for the money, not because they like what’s left of American society
Yes. And have you noticed that there are conservatives who say we should celebrate the arrival of vast numbers of immigrants who are only here for the money and who despise our culture?
Regarding Ben’s abortion question tweet. Why is this an issue now, pray tell? I’ve never heard of it amongst my peers, family history etc. Are there any specific, er, ‘cultures’ within which this is a concern?
Also, J.A. Micheline wrote a piece on the ongoing “ComicsGate” furor
Richard Meyer is possibly my new favorite person. Unfortunately, I think he’s probably right that comics can’t recover from this. The GamerGate crybabies were easily-triggered millenials; most comic book fans are 40-year old white guys who just aren’t going to put up with this tripe. They’re voting with their wallets and it shows.
Douglas Murray, The Strange Death of Europe.
Currently reading it … and wearing out my highlighter.
Darleen, the Library Policeman would like a word with you…
😄
Bad behavior on US University campuses arrive in Australia … love this phrase – local wokels.
Despise your culture?
I accept that many immigrants don’t understand how all the moving parts of liberal democracy work, so assume changing *this* won’t affect *that*. As a result they make mistakes about how to get what the West has.
But Western culture, and specifically US, is far from despised by most people. That enrages a small and very noisy minority, but the bulk ignore them.
Arab rap singers, Chinese skateboarders, Mexican NFL fans, giggly Russian teenagers wearing Nike and Gap. The penetration of Western culture, mostly via movies and electronic gadgets, now reaches every point on the globe. There are local holdouts, but there’s no global competitors.
There is no fifth column of Hispanics secretly trying to undo America. They don’t hate you any more than previous waves of Italians or Irish did.
Yes, they also want to keep some of their culture. We respect when Jews or Ukranians do that. But if a Galvanic does it is somehow hate?
I’m not for open borders, but most immigrants respect where they live. Otherwise they’d have chosen somewhere else.
Yes, my autocorrect changed Hispanic to Galvanic. I hate it.
“There is no fifth column of Hispanics secretly trying to undo America. They don’t hate you any more than previous waves of Italians or Irish did.”
I must have missed the equivalent of La Raza in Italian and Gaelic.
Immigrants are “here for the money”…
At Thanksgiving dinner some years back, I literally had to take my father (Chicago-born, Marine / Korea vet and reserve Colonel, career test pilot) out of the house to calm him down, when my brother-in-law (Indian muslim immigrant via wealthy family, Singapore, Cornell engineering, and Apple Corp.) asserted blandly that, of course, most immigrants were here for the economic opportunity, and nothing else.
Dad almost went over the table at him. And he was a guy who was professionally calm in a crisis.
La Raza’s very much a, er, minority. Most Mexicans on whom I’ve eavesdropped seem to just want to make their $ and go home.
Also, that Veritas outfit is misnamed. Nowadays, Federal employees can be and are fired. Veritas could have learned this with 5 minutes’ Googling, which is why I say they’re misnamed. I suspect that giggling fellow in the video is an actor.
“I suspect that giggling fellow in the video is an actor.”
I doubt that: O’Keefe’s Project Veritas has a good record of undercover videos. I’ve never seen evidence that they falsified anything.
Then he’s an idiot. He can indeed be fired. (Being an idiot, he probably won’t be fired, will instead end up running his agency, but he COULD be fired.)
Hi Fred the Fourth,
So what are the dot-Indians here for?
Pogonip,
It was the nothing else that was the problem, not the economic thing.
Dad (and his brother, also a Marine) were of the WW2 / Korea generation. We had just dealt with the death of his nephew in a Marine training accident.
So the nothing else was a bitter pill.
Then he’s an idiot. He can indeed be fired.
You are confusing de jure with de facto.
Not at all. As a contractor I frequently dealt with an agency notorious for firing its employees. Few outsiders heard of it because if the Assistant Undersecretary Overseer of Diversity Administration gets fired, that’s news; the anonymous GS-5 who does the actual work, not so much.
“I suspect that giggling fellow in the video is an actor.”
Oh, watch the next one. They have the woman who organized the hounding of Kirsten Neilsen boasting about using DoJ resources for Democratic Socialists work. They ain’t actors.
Also, at around 14:30, “I’m gonna make certain the Attorney General of the United States finds out about this so we can take appropriate action”.
O’Keefe can be a bit over-dramatic at times (I don’t know what he thinks he’s doing with that bizarre hey-we-just-happen-to-have-a-constitutional-lawyer-lying-around-this-abandoned-warehouse schtick*), but he’s for real.
*It reminds me of Network 7, which was The Future thirty years ago.**
**Holy #@%$in’ Hellfire. How did that happen?
You are confusing de jure with de facto.
I heartily agree. And I only work for county government.
Also, J.A. Micheline wrote a piece on the ongoing “ComicsGate” furor
Richard Meyer is possibly my new favorite person. Unfortunately, I think he’s probably right that comics can’t recover from this.
I’ve just been informed that DC Comics has decided to uncover, would that do?
Yep, the Latest Batman Comic Shows Off Bruce Wayne’s Bat-Genitals
*It reminds me of Network 7, which was The Future thirty years ago.**
**Holy #@%$in’ Hellfire. How did that happen?
Ah, the days of “Max Headroom” et al.
And whatever happened to Magenta Devine, the posh, statuesque Goth junkie?
Ah- “In 2006, Devine fronted an Office of Fair Trading campaign that urged consumers in the travel market to book with a member of ABTA”.
Sheesh.
Other than driver’s license and license plate renewal I have no experience with county government. I have only dealt with the Feds as far as seeing people get fired.
