The Dunning-Kruger Diaries
I bring you art. Twelve minutes of it. In which Ms Eames Armstrong and Matthew Ryan Rossetti thrill onlookers at the 2015 MIX NYC Queer Experimental Film Festival with a terribly radical rendition of music from Les Misérables. As readers will no doubt be aware, the MIX NYC Queer Experimental Film Festival is where gathered artistic juggernauts “create queer experimental media through an ever-changing constellation of means.” The participants, we’re told, “make art for ourselves and our community, not for markets or museums.” Consequently, the festival is a “decisive launching pad for emerging talents.”
No skipping ahead to the good bits.
The festival, including the soul-engorging splendour of the piece featured above, was sponsored by both the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. An earlier performance by Ms Armstrong and Mr Rossetti, in which Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is, um, enhanced and made transgressive, can be found here. You lucky, lucky people.
At no point is it convincing that the alleged artists know what they’re doing, or care, or have anything specific in mind. It really is just, “I’ll piss about with a distortion pedal and you drink beer in your pants.”
It’s not just shit, it’s really dated shit. Why is it always the 1970s with these people?
Why is it always the 1970s with these people?
Heh. Quite. Even the idea of a “queer experimental film festival” seems comically retro, an antiquated hangover from another age.
“Nonconsensual assemblage”
I’m guessing it’s some kind of rape.
“Nonconsensual assemblage”
There was a lot of that when my kids used to argue over their Duplo.
“…It is a tribute to capitalism and free markets that they throw up such a surplus as to be able to feed these useless mouths. …”
So, blame capitalism?
Ironically (I think I’m using that word correctly…I’m really not sure any more) this thread is reminding me of John Cage’s 4:33, to wit via wiki:
“Reminded” or “blame”…Perhaps that’s what they were going for and failed even more miserably than as it appears.
Did that guy go tinkle in the little black garbage bag?
By calling this “art,” they are identifying what they believe to now be the height of our virtue as a species.

I think what makes this third-rate hucksterism so wearying (besides the time wasted in enduring it) is the presumption and insult, the implication that it’s good enough for the likes of you.
Off-Topic, but Darleen (or anyone else who might know), what’s the current status of Protein Wisdom? All I get is a blank screen.
Thanks.

The only thing that’s shocking about any of this stuff is how fucking awful it is.
“The only thing that’s shocking about any of this stuff is how fucking awful it is.”
Aye. I once had the awful experience of going to a similar kind of hell in Glasgee a few years back (I was trying to impress a pretty young thing…..) and what struck me was how others appeared to be buying into it with vocal analyses of form, function and other metaphysical mind-wreck….
Felt like having a sympathy vomit…
The only thing that’s shocking about any of this stuff is how fucking awful it is.
Watching these things – almost any of them – you have to wonder, was there ever a time when the people involved looked at what they were doing, at each other, at any of their peers, and thought, “Hm. We’re a bit shit at this, aren’t we?” Was there ever a brief flickering of shame or humility, or even just frustration at their own inadequacy? Was that thread ever pulled at?
I like the way these ‘artists’ often use the idea of ‘nonconsensual something’ in their ‘art’ to make it challenging or whatever. Being the same people on the front lines of demanding safe spaces and crying if someone looks at them funny.
They love to ‘challenge’ other people but crumble as soon as they hear a differing opinion.
Useless brats, all of them.
Was there ever a brief flickering of shame or humility, or even just frustration at their own inadequacy?
This question, or some variant thereof, comes up time and time again. None of the possible answers is terribly appetising. In the field graced by these particular luminaries, shame or humility are sighted about as frequently as a Yangtze river dolphin in a crimplene twin-set. Surely the very idea of anyone being inadequate will be made a hate crime soon, if it’s not already.
Was there ever a brief flickering of shame…
Gotta agree with Trevor there. What we see here is the end product of a generation that has been told, from the moment they were toddlers, that they were special. I don’t think that they are able to fathom that they don’t measure up. Everything they ever did, every burp, every fart, was lauded to the stars. The schools they went to, the colleges they attended, everybody accommodated them and their illusions, because, hey, you wouldn’t want to crush their self-esteem. And now what we have is the most narcissistic generation to ever walk the face of the Earth.
As my father used to say, only half in joke, “Il leur faudrait une bonne guerre…”
Hedgehog:
It turned out that one great side-benefit of my son’s taking up golf was the practice he got at failing, solo, in public. You gotta admire the moxie of a kid who can walk to the first tee at a tournament, have his name announced to the audience, and swing that driver — AFTER the previous day’s experience of that event ended with him duffing the ball into the weeds in full view of everybody.
Was there ever a brief flickering of shame or humility, or even just frustration at their own inadequacy?
In my experience, these lot aren’t big on shame, humility, or self-awareness. You can guarantee that they’ve never taken responsibility for a damned thing in their lives.

In case anyone wants to poke at that a little bit more.
jabrwok,
…what’s the current status of Protein Wisdom? All I get is a blank screen.
I’m not sure, but on Twitter, Jeff is referring to it in the past tense. Uh-oh.
I found this:

Apparently, the site was hacked.
Thanks…um…Spiny San!:-) I hope the site returns. Wasn’t one of my daily reads, but I enjoyed dropping in occasionally.
