Victor Davis Hanson on the vulgarity, hypocrisy – and appeal – of Donald Trump:
The children of Republican elites do not sit in classes where a quarter of the students do not speak English… Their children are not on buses where an altercation between squabbling eight-year-olds leads to a tattooed parent arriving at your home to challenge you to a fight over “disrespecting” his family name. The establishment Republicans… are rarely stopped in a Walmart parking lot by a gang-banger in the next parking stall who out of the blue says, “Hey essay, what the fuck are you looking at me for already? And what are you going to do about it, punk?”
Much like our own Guardianistas, gripped as they are by the Simon Schama Tendency.
John Daniel Davidson on mass immigration and cultural decline:
In the long term, Europe can either prefer its own civilisation and culture, and defend it, or capitulate to another. But it cannot absorb masses of unassimilated members of another culture and expect to survive. It will be changed forever, and the change will be in the direction of the immigrants’ way of life, and away from that of the native-born. This is a difficult truth to accept in our egalitarian age.
And Mary Grabar on Melissa Click and her equally arrogant faculty supporters:
When news of her firing came, supporters doubled down: at the faculty council meeting, no one supported her firing. In fact, faculty expressed concern about how the decision would impact “the ability of academics to participate in activism.” […] What we have is a group of employees assuming the right to use company time in any way they want. Their outrage at outside scrutiny shows a level of privilege that no other profession enjoys. Attorneys, doctors, engineers, or manufacturers, all can be sued, but a professor who cheats students preparing for communications careers by teaching Lady Gaga cannot.
As Grabar notes, many of Click’s supporters, chiefly from the worlds of sociology and gender studies, were featured in David Horowitz and Jacob Laksin’s 2009 book One-Party Classroom, an eye-widening catalogue of absurdly dogmatic and politicised courses often taught by educators of questionable competence.

Regarding Trump, and others, I think Andy Warhol was spot on when he said, “In the future everyone will be Adolph Hitler.”
“In the future everyone will be Adolph Hitler.”
Well, at least they won’t be Adolf Hitler. < rim-tap >

Unless, of course, changing the native culture is the plan. Then for people like Merkel it’s not so difficult.
Mr Schama currently lives in Briarcliff Manor…The kind of neighbourhood that has genteel regulations regarding alcoholic beverages…
Interesting regulations they are too. “The possession of an open, unsealed, resealed or partially full bottle, can or container which contains an alcoholic beverage, unwrapped or with the top exposed…”, are verboten,so I am willing to bet the more creative among the denizens will be sitting on their stoops chugging their 40s from paper bags, which is always regarded as a sign of class and refinement.

Heh…Spell check kept changing Hitler to Hiller, then Hilter. Was fine with Adolph, though. Adolph Rupp, Adolph Coors, Adolph Ochs, good. Adolf Hitler, Adolf Eichmann, Adolf Ziegler, bad.
Don’t forget Adolphe Menjou, though the superfluous “e” is a little over-the-top.

It’s a pretty good example of moral exhibitionism. But then the people who proclaim their piety by saying we should throw open our borders to the flotsam of the world rarely mean that they want that flotsam moving in next door to them, or next door to their elderly parents. What they most often mean is, they wish those uneducated young men from Morocco and Eritrea to move in next door to someone else, ideally in a part of town that they don’t have to visit or pay much attention to.
And so their piety entails little risk of inconvenience to themselves, but a great deal of potential inconvenience for someone else. A someone else whose concerns they, the pious ones, typically dismiss as either racist or selfish. And like Mr Schama, who lives a continent away in an exclusive, very white, millionaire village, these people dare to think themselves unassailably virtuous.
Regarding l’affaire Click, it’s been amusing to watch the Grievance Studies/SJW community at my alma mater come to the realization that their paychecks are controlled ultimately by our part-time state legislature and alumni, most of whom are also graduates of Mizzou from the colleges of Agriculture, Forestry, Veterinary Medicine, Business and the like. In other words, people who work very hard for a living in real life and who were extremely annoyed by the bru-ha-ha of the past year. If one were the betting sort, the smart money is on all the farmers who control the purse strings.
What they most often mean is, they wish those uneducated young men from Morocco and Eritrea to move in next door to someone else, ideally in a part of town that they don’t have to visit or pay much attention to.

That review mentions Steven Pinker’s ‘The Blank Slate’, which is my favourite popular science book. So much so that I’ve bought it for at least 3 people (who probably didn’t bother to read it, but really ought to have done).
A pitiful “flash mob” of sour-faced old women (and what looks like one of their poor daughters press-ganged into the mix) performs a terrible rap/spoken word thingy protesting the Australian government’s treatment of refugees. Sadly nobody had the presence of mind to pelt them with rotten vegetables.

Via Tim Blair, who remarks “There’s so much cultural appropriation going on here that everyone involved should be deported. Probably to Nauru.”
Australian references explained:
“Mad fucking witch” is how the immigration minister described some journalist in a text message which he accidentally sent to that same journalist.
And Nauru is one of a few Pacific islands where Australia houses those seeking asylum, I think because once they reach the mainland they’re more entitled to stay here. If you’re thinking “Why didn’t they just change the law rather than build concentration camps in other countries?”, well, yes, that’s an excellent question. I don’t know. It was probably just easier.
“It was six months ago this week when Nicola Sturgeon heroically admitted she’d be ‘happy’ to have a refugee move into her detached Glasgow home. That same rousing week last September, we were treated to the vision of Yvette Cooper ‘bravely’ holding up a piece of A4 paper with #refugeeswelcome scrawled on it. As he’s wont to do, Bob Geldof went one further, offering to put up three families in his pile in Kent and another in his London flat. Yet, to date, it seems that not a single refugee has made it to Nicola’s nest, Casa Cooper or either of Geldoff’s gaffs.”

There’s a family of left wing loons near me with a sign saying #RefugessWelcome in the window. I have an overwhelming urge to contact all the local refugee organisations in the city on their behalf to announce an ‘Open House’ party for all local refugees and film the ensuing chaos from over the road.
I guess that makes me a bad person.

Why isn’t someone doing this? I know you wouldn’t want to do so to bring such into your own neighborhood, though if you’re into thorough vetting even that might be interesting. But surely someone out there in all of the UK could take it upon themselves to help Geldoff, et al out here.
I’ve actually longed to do a clearing website, collating all the known statements of supporting luvvies, with their addresses. These would then be made available in Turkey, Syria, Iraq etc with nice neat Google maps.

His columns have become extremely tedious in the past 3-4 years. When he strays from the evils of Mexifornia and the evils of the Leftist takeover here he is, at his core, a “Professor” (yes, he actually is one).
His hate for Trump, and by extension, Trump’s supporters, is visceral. The paragraph you quoted is preceded by two filled with the usual bile-filled hate our “betters” with Trump Derangement Syndrome scream at us bitter clingers from on high. He closes with one just as spiteful.
PJMedia, NRO, and so many other other pubs and blogs have been smoked out for what they really are: uniparty globalists.
We have had enough of the bullish!t, lies and backstabs. We will burn this GOPe bitch down, one way or another and replace it with a party of patriots.
Right now there is a meeting going on with bigwigs from silicon valley and members of congress on now to stop Trump because he is an existential threat to all of them (including Facebook and Twitter execs).
Twitter has been taken over by Leftists (their Orwellen-named “Trust and Safety Council”), Mark Zukerberg is openly collaborating with Mama Merkel and the German government in an attempt strangle the nationalist movement in the crib, the American press it attempting to brand Trump as a Nazi and a KKK supporter with no pushback at all.
The GOPe is doing all it can for a brokered convention in an attempt to disenfranchise fully 1/2 of Republicans, millions of Reagan Democrats and millions of people who have never voted before but are coming out in droves for Trump.
The GOPe would rather have Her Thighness in the White House instead of Trump. That’s how twisted and depraved they are. But that would be their certain undoing, electoral or otherwise.
There are hundreds of millions of guns in the hands of hundreds of millions of American patriots watching very closely at current events and drawing their own conclusions. We are far different than the disarmed and feminized Europeans. We have and utterly different mindset. There will be no Rotherhams, Malmös nor Colognes here. Count on it.
The GOPe may damn well get what they ask for. They may also get the sort of insurrection our Fathers played out 260+ years ago.
If that happens no gated “community” nor “safe space” will avail them.
Here’s more on Zukerberg:

A taste (the percentages you see are the politicians conservative rankings):
“If Donald Trump wanted to invent a caricature of his opponents, he might spin a tale of GOP Establishment fixtures holding a secret meeting with decidedly non-conservative billionaires at a posh island resort to plot against him.
According to the Huffington Post, that’s exactly what happened at the American Enterprise Institute’s annual World Forum last weekend:
Apple CEO Tim Cook, Google co-founder Larry Page, Napster creator and Facebook investor Sean Parker, and Tesla Motors and SpaceX honcho Elon Musk all attended. So did Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY)44% political guru Karl Rove, House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI)56%, GOP Sens. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR)75%
(Ark.), Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO)33% (Colo.), Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC)88% (S.C.), Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH)50% (Ohio) and Ben Sasse (Neb.), who recently made news by saying he “cannot support Donald Trump.”
Along with Ryan, the House was represented by Energy and Commerce Committee Chair Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI)40% (Mich.), Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX)57% (Texas) and almost-Speaker Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)40% (Calif.), sources said, along with leadership figure Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA)44% (Wash.), Budget Committee Chairman Rep. Tom Price (R-GA)68% (R-Ga.), Financial Services Committee Chairman Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX)71% (Texas) and Rep. Diane Black (R-TN)67% (Tenn.).
Philip Anschutz, the billionaire GOP donor whose company owns a stake in Sea Island, was also there, along with Democratic Rep. John Delaney (D-MD)4%, who represents Maryland. Arthur Sulzberger, the publisher of The New York Times, was there, too, a Times spokeswoman confirmed.”
Read the whole thing to see the forces aligned to take Trump out.
Whether Trump wins or not there are gonna be a *whole* lot of people out of a job pretty damn soon.
I was trying to figure out what annoyed me about “the ability of academics to participate in activism.”
I think it is that it smells like parents trying to be friends with their young children rather than doing their job.
Surely an academics job is to teach and research, not join naive student protests.
I’m loving the alumni from real schools withholding donations. Perhaps they should start asking why the uni has a clown quarter at all.
The GOPe is doing all it can for a brokered convention in an attempt to disenfranchise fully 1/2 of Republicans, millions of Reagan Democrats and millions of people who have never voted before but are coming out in droves for Trump.
Does that set a record for conclusion-jumping packed into a single sentence?
I was trying to figure out what annoyed me about “the ability of academics to participate in activism.”
What’s annoying is that they want to force other people to pay for their psychodramas and posturing, rather than the job they are paid to do – teach and research.
I’m loving the alumni from real schools withholding donations. Perhaps they should start asking why the uni has a clown quarter at all.
I’m about to make it clear to my alma mater that I don’t like the milquetoast response they’ve made to asshat politicking and suppression of free speech by the students’ Union.
By ‘make clear’ I mean withhold donations and urge others to do likewise.
Melissa Click, the so-called educator who was caught on camera calling for “some muscle” to enforce her leftist power fantasies, and who then lied about it repeatedly, and who was also caught on camera obstructing traffic and shrieking abuse at a police officer, and who then lied about that… well, it seems Dr Click is continuing her strange mental journey. Apparently, in her mind, she’s a “scapegoat,” the victim of a diabolical plan by “conservatives” to “silence black students and their allies.”
And so again, I wonder. At what point in her life is this forty-five-year-old woman planning to grow up?

She’s a leftist academic and therefore immune to maturity.

It’s an odd phenomenon and yet a standard feature of the Clown Quarter. See, for instance, the third item here. Or this. Or any number of posts tagged ‘academia’. There’s an air of delinquency.
I mean, choosing to spend your adult life surrounded by stroppy teenagers, all day, every day, is something not everyone would wish to do, possibly for fear of going mad. But wanting to be embroiled in their ‘activism’ and every pretentious drama, every manufactured grievance, suggests something odder, something not quite healthy. You have to wonder what kind of personality would not only seek that out but then become so immersed in it, so vicariously titillated, that it overrides their teaching duties and any pretence of probity, and they end up threatening students with thuggery, blocking traffic and shrieking at police officers.
It makes her feel young again.

Like a dad in his 50s hitting the clubs dressed like John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever
You have to wonder what kind of personality…
They desperately seek relevancy, and suffer from delusions of adequacy.
These “activist” alleged academics, as has been pointed out repeatedly, are not coming from the ranks of engineering, biochemistry, or the like, but universally from Vacuous Studies, like any of the “-ist” studies that are totally unneeded, or Bloated Studies that are useful but have been corrupted but the “-ist” studies influences. As an example of the later one could look at any language department; language good, feminist perspectives of Sanskrit, not so much.
The point is they really know, though they can’t admit, what they “teach” is rubbish, and that their “research” is likewise, and that they have lives that are totally cake. With the charming Miss Click as an example, she knows, as does the entire world, that her “research” on Lady Gaga fans, and her classes like “Television Program Analysis and Criticism”, are utter wastes of time and do nothing to advance knowledge or better the world.
Thus, in order to feel relevant (and to hang with the cool kidz) they take to “activism” under the delusion that they are actually doing anything to change the world, because it is far easier to wear a Che shirt, keffiyeh, or #BLM t-shirt on a comfy Missouri campus then actually to go live in the jungle with a rifle, or join ISIS, or go work in a ghetto tutoring black kids, because solidarity, or something.
The winsome Miss Click’s newest snit fit is nothing more that fear of loss of her sinecure.
totally cake.
Heh.

There’s an interesting correlation here. When I was in university, there was a student theatre group that put on a comedy show every year, very silly, mostly an excuse to have raucous parties. I noticed when I auditioned that all the important roles – producer, director, head writer, &c. – were all sewn up by people in their thirties and forties who’d been hanging around the university post-grad for more than a decade, working in local businesses and keeping active in the social scene. Some of them are still there. None of them have families, or more than mid-level 9-5 office jobs. As far as I can tell, some people hit sophomore year or so and just stop, emotionally, and do whatever they can to stay at that point for the rest of their lives.

@Joan, that is really scary. I couldn’t imagine this rubbish escaping the clown quarter of the unis but here we are.
This is how societies die.
It’s a rotting of the moral faculties given institutional form.
This is how societies die.
Joan,
Having had to sit through similar briefings in my wayward past, I can assure that as the number of these things increases, the number of Soldiers who take them seriously asymptotically approaches zero, though they are a good chance to play a round of buzzword bingo.
The things are usually dreamt up at echelons above reality by civilian zampolits and force fed to troops via EO NCOs, many of whom get dragooned into the extra duty, and who would rather be having root canals with hand drills.
I can assure that as the number of these things increases…
The point, I think, is that attempting to inculcate racial guilt in members of the armed forces, and expecting them to regurgitate a series of lies, is not something that a functional culture would do.
The point, I think, is that attempting to inculcate racial guilt…
I would agree if that what was being attempted, however, all this assorted “extra training” is Big Army (Marines, Navy, AF) CYA because they have to answer to the civilians who have no clues, but are overstocked on agenda.
Thus, when PFC Schmidlap colors outside the lines and does something someone doesn’t like, Big Army (and the rest), and every subordinate command to down to some poor platoon leader can point out that everyone got the training, and obviously Schmidlap is not with the program, and it is not an institutional problem.
Zoe Saldana is not black enough to play Nina Simone.
Was that the Dutch Boy official color chart they used? Or is there a special skin-tone chart for racists?
Melissa Click:
She figured out how to game the system, if not awfully well or with any true flair. Pretty bog-standard idiot humanities drone, mistakenly allowed to think she had some special status due to the power of truthiness. Or whatever. She’ll be teaching bad poetry in some county junior college before too long.
I would agree if that what was being attempted, however…
I certainly hope you’re right. But the pervasiveness of these attempts to indoctrinate is disgusting. It’s a farce that’s no longer exclusive to the Clown Quarter of academia.
It’s perhaps worth noting that Jane Elliott, a bitch-in-chief of “diversity” training, claims that her classes are most effective when people are dismissive and but are nonetheless forced to attend them. This is because she tries to exploit the resentment of being forced to attend in order to “prove” that the resentment is driven by hidden racism. Rather than by an objection to being goaded and scolded by a vile harridan with serious mental health issues.
I would agree if that what was being attempted, however, . . .
To echo thrice, and granting that The references do exist, just not referencing with page numbers, and commenting anyway . . . .
In Frezza’s Fire In A Faraway Place there is the comment of an emphatically career XO level officer and his wife; It’s stated that any time they were in church, she had learned to listen for the sound of her husband starting to breath very deeply, very relaxed, at a time that he’s very visibly and clearly sitting upright and watching intently. At which point she’d put an elbow into his ribs to wake him up from the extremely deep sleep that the sermon had very quickly put him into.
In Fraser’s The Complete McAuslan, there is the comment that there has to be an entire generation of British of a certain type–aka WWII enlisted infantry—regarding any time that the phrase is stated of All right, now, men, at a time that they’re very visibly and clearly sitting upright and watching intently. The entire group, in unison, soon will be starting to breath very deeply, very relaxed, having nearly immediately dropped into the extremely deep sleep that the impending lecture from some senior officer had very quickly put them into.
Yes, in both cases, everyone involved is sitting upright, eyes wide open, and is sound asleep. In the case of Fraser, he’s writing from his experience as enlisted and then officer, where Frezza’s commentary would date from prolly a generation or two later . . .
And one of the comments floating about repeatedly as the Soviet Union and empire started to fall apart, They pretend to pay us, and we pretend to work.
Soooo, another generation or two after that, yes, the zampolits still congeal in place. This time around, the situation that alleged educational organizations have gotten involved is unfortunate and a mess that will get cleaned up one way or another. But all in all, in time, given corrections, Ehn, For the hipster will be among you always.
YAY.
Lets breach the lion/donkey interface again.

Another snippet. I like much of what I read by Roger Scruton. I enjoy listening to In Our Time on Radio 4. Melvyn Bragg usually seems interested and engaged with the subject at hand and his guests. It’s interesting to contrast his and Will Self’s sneering disdain for Professor Scruton in the half hour programme which feels more like a hostile PhD viva or a Maoist denunciation:
