Hysterical and Therefore Righteous
Behold the modern campus, home of deep thought and cool intellects:
The incident happened Tuesday night, when students thought they found several nooses hanging from a tree. Word quickly spread as campus officials swiftly released a statement condemning the foul hate crime. But come morning, police said a short investigation had led them to conclude the “nooses” were really just the remnants of paper lanterns from an event held all the way back in June.
Yes, I know. It’s almost funny. But then,
Unperturbed by the truth, students launched an assembly following the incident to speak as though the hate crime really did happen. According to the News Journal, a local paper, the assembly was held “to find ways to change the campus climate” in the wake of the bad atmosphere apparently exposed by a fictional hate crime… One administrator said the climate of hate at Delaware was exposed by the mere fact he could even believe the alleged hate crime occurred.
And so,
The University of Delaware’s vice provost for diversity Carol Henderson… said the college is planning to launch a new “diversity action plan” as soon as it’s approved by school officials.
With so many witch finders now in business, witches will be found.
the assembly was held “to find ways to change the campus climate” in the wake of the bad atmosphere apparently exposed by a fictional hate crime
What’s the betting a campus with no ‘vice provost for diversity’ wouldn’t have a ‘bad atmosphere’ or a ‘climate of hate’?
On the level of anthropology (and collective psychodrama), it’s fascinating:
In other words, even though there was no racist incident at all, none, merely student hysteria and a ludicrous reaction, she will act as though some egregious racist incident actually occurred. She will bend reality to her dogma.
And these creatures are entrusted with the care of teenagers.
And if there are no such incidents, they will CREATE them.
a short investigation
Snork.
And if there are no such incidents, they will CREATE them.
Yes, absolutely. And more often than you’d think:
Hence the term psychodrama.
Hate crime!

The University of Delaware has been in the news for this sort of thing before. IIRC a couple of years ago, it required all students in student housing to participate in various consciousness-raising sessions wherein university employees monitored the confessions of new students to various “crimes” of privilege. Refusal to participate or confess was very bad indeed for the recalcitrant few. (Link)
@Joan
I’ve sampled Mexican cuisine in several European countries. The real hate crime is what Europeans do to pico de gallo or mole poblano.
Clearly they need classes on what is racism and what isn’t as well as one on party decoration recognition.
These people are mentally ill
And these creatures are entrusted with the care of teenagers.
And more often than not, they are funded to do so via our tax dollars…or pounds or euros as the case may be.
These twits are so out of touch with reality that we may have to pretend to be dealing with their pretend outrage. The we can all go home and live our pretend lives as usual.
These people are mentally ill
The university does seem intent on churning out a generation of credulous bedlamites. And so, instead of anyone publicly questioning the rush to outrage and the hair-trigger assumptions of racial bigotry – assumptions actively cultivated by staff and administrators – and instead of reflecting on the ludicrousness of the situation and how they got there, the staff and students decided to double down and milk it. With earnest sermons on the need to purge oneself of “white privilege.”
You have to wonder when more parents will start to realise that large swathes of academia are not only worthless but objectively harmful. By which I mean, if an impressionable student were to approach this environment with the expected credulity and willingness to conform, they’d emerge from the process mentally diminished. Learning to beg questions and rush to The Conclusions One Has Been Taught One Ought To Display, and learning to be emotionally reactive to even tiny slights, or imaginary slights, isn’t ideal for rational thought. Or realism. Or self-awareness.
Or personal charisma.
You have to wonder when more parents will start to realise that large swathes of academia are not only worthless but objectively harmful.
OK, perhaps I’m sounding like a broken record here but, in the US at least and I suspect by the “austerity” protests also in the UK to some similar degree, the parents are not paying much if at all and are more interested in having the freeloaders out of the house and living on someone else’s dime than they care about what these kids are learning. That “someone else” is us. And in many, many cases, the parents were “educated” by the same piss-poor institutions and even some of the same “educators” and thus are of similar mind.

And if you disagree we will really hate you!
To a hammer…
Is it (a) the remains of a paper lantern, (b) a weather balloon, (c) the planet Venus, or (d) racism?
WHERE’S JEFF GOLDSTEIN WHEN YOU NEED HIM?
I’ll tell you where he is. He’s down in his newly refurbished basement playing pool and muttering “I told those bastards it would come to this, but did they listen? No. No they did not.”
The university does seem intent on churning out a generation of credulous bedlamites.
It’s scary how much of this hysteria is being driven by the students themselves. That age group is notorious for its righteous indignation–having emerged from childhood’s cocoon, they’re just noticing how awful the world can be, and because it’s new to them, their reactions are way, WAY out of proportion to the actual problem.
So the real problem is that the alleged adults running the show are not behaving as adults, putting the breaks on hysteria before it cycles out of control in an ever-amplifying feedback loop.
Some of them are just as happy to imbibe from the fount of cheap grace but the rest are spineless, brainless globs of undifferentiated cells.
It won’t stop until there’s a massacre, and maybe not even then.
So the real problem is that the alleged adults running the show are not behaving as adults, putting the breaks on hysteria before it cycles out of control
Yup.
… a generation of credulous bedlamites
Would you mind if I borrowed that, with proper attribution, of course? 😉
I’m still coasting on dicentra’s pernicious ideal, so I guess I can waive the standard house cut.
I went to uni in the UK in 1968, with the intention of studying, getting laid and drinking, not necessarily in that order.
First objective – reasonable – got a 2nd
Second – um, complete failure
Third – great success
What the hell are these students thinking about?
Mark Twain: “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”
You might have to bump those ages up a decade these days, but the idea that the young are cocksure and opinionated out of all proportion to their actual intellect and experience is not new. The new thing is we humour them in this delusion, foster it even. Most errors are retrievable if the necessary corrective is applied early and firmly enough. But we are not even trying, and the results will be catastrophic (whether individually or societally I do not know, but someone’s getting burnt).
South Park is not about to run out of material any time soon.
The new thing is we humour them in this delusion, foster it even.
I can assure you that this particular stupidity did not originate with the students but rather in the x-Studies fever swamps, which is why college administrators have been afraid to do anything about it.
Most students are unable to provide a justification for this hysteria but the x-Studies professors can produce reams and reams of scary-sounding outrage, they having dedicated their lives to doing just such a thing.
Also, thanks, David, for fixing my malformed close-tag.

Unfortunately many of them have never had to function outside a school setting.
I spent a couple of decades working in p-12 education systems in Australia at a time when we had a delineation between technical schools and high schools. The trade teachers – required to have ten years of real world industrial experience – tended to be far more mature than others in the system. High school teachers frequently seem to be very naive individuals to me.
The University of Delaware has been in the news for this sort of thing before.
And it’s worth remembering that the bizarre “treatment” prescribed at Delaware – in which students were told, “The term [racist] applies to all white people living in the United States” – wasn’t some random anomaly or one-off aberration, but was hailed as an award-winning exemplar of “social justice education.” It was considered the ideal way to indoctrinate youngsters. By educators who feel entitled to do just that.
Shut down all non-science uni courses and sack all teachers and admin creeps (diversity etc) without compensation and confiscate their pensions. Throw the students out on their arses and let all of them try to sling their socialistic shite in the marketplace
Endlessly moaning about the antics of these scum is not stopping them. Grey cells need to be exerted on the question of how to sunder this shite not merely doing “outrage” however justified.
From the article: ‘ “We are bigger than hate,” said UD vice provost for diversity Carol Henderson, whose claim seems self-evident given the lack of any hate crimes at Delaware.’
Of course they’re bigger! They’re stupid! “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe!” –Einstein (attrib.)
Seriously, people who’ve never worked anywhere but academia are the most credulous, naive, silly people presently extant.
