I hope they let us know how their ‘having less’ works out.
I’m not sure which was more entertaining. The fat communist in the overstretched “too big to fail” t-shirt was pretty special. But then there was the woman who thinks it “grotesque” that quite a lot of people can have things they want. (Well, how very dare they.) Or the old hippie who thinks that because he doesn’t need a mobile phone no-one else should need one (while in the background a protestor dressed as a penguin checks his mobile phone). And then of course there’s the chap in the striking black-and-white ensemble whose placard informs us that his farting threatens the world.
These people are completely detached from reality.
Well, they may be less than clear about what it is they want exactly, or how ruin might be averted should they actually get it, but at least they’re big on organising their outrage about whatever it is they’re outraged about on any given day. In fact, they had a Senior Outrage Coalition with badges letting us know how outraged they are. About something.
“We have way too much stuff” says the middle-aged man with the $30.00 haircut and the designer frames.
Funny, that’s not how it was reported on the evening news last night.
It’s not these protesters that annoy me so much as the reactions of the media and politicians. Take for instance Naomi Oreskes who threatens us with the death of our pets caused by climate change:
“The loss of pet cats and dogs garnered particular attention among wealthy Westerners, but what was anomalous in 2023 soon became the new normal. A shadow of ignorance and denial had fallen over people who considered themselves children of the Enlightenment.”
This from a campaigner for de-industrialisation & austerity, who doesn’t feel the need to explain how pets are common in the west because we are rich. If Naomi gets her way we won’t be able to afford pets. The dog will get the bullet either way.
She is far outside the IPCC mainstream, claiming effects of greater magnitude and earlier impact than any credible scientist yet she is never termed a denier.
“Having less is actually very freeing.”
I’ll tell the poor.
rjmadden: “I hope they let us know how their ‘having less’ works out.”
Hopefully, them having less means that we will hear far, far less from this crowd in future (as well as not seeing them)
Good to know we should be imprisoning mining engineers and “anyone involved in fracking”.
“Having less is actually very freeing.”
I originally misread that as “Having less is actually very freezing.” and thought well yes, having less available energy this winter and paying much, much more for it will be very freezing for me and a lot of other people like me.
Due to our insane energy policy a lot of us might be ‘having less’ of lots of things this winter, especially if it get a bit, you know, wintery.
Still, we won’t have any power cuts because we are paying for thousands of diesel generators to be on standby in case our wonderful renewables are not quite generating their quota, and if that fails we can always pay factories to shut down and send their workers home. All very economically sound I’m sure, (though I’m not sure which economic theory preaches this practice).
Still, I’m sure all these excellent precautions will work a treat.
If Nigel and his chaps can’t turn a cold winter into a bundle of seats in May, they should give up now.
I’m confused. Do they want poor people to be richer or stay poor for Gaia?
I’m confused. Do they want poor people to be richer or stay poor for Gaia?
I doubt they’ve reached agreement on that. They’re too busy being outraged and hoping someone’s watching. But apparently we must “turn everything off,” put “the kids” in charge and “build a movement for revolution,” possibly along lines of the Young Communist League, because “nothing less will do.” Oh, and we must jail “anybody involved in fracking.” You see, once capitalism has been toppled and conventional fuels have been abolished, along with corporations and mobile phones, and once fuel bills have risen so fantastically that Gaia will be saved, people will spontaneously “come together” and “be inspired.” Albeit while shivering in the dark.
Because nothing says, “I care about the environment,” like leaving heaps of trash for someone else to deal with.

I rather like the anti-BP and “climate change” ululations of the commie guitarist playing his Guild D-40 Bluegrass Jubilee (MSRP $3300) whilst wearing a Martin hat (guitar MSRPs from $600-$59,000), apparently oblivious to the Third World Forest Destroying® origins of the woods from which his axe is made, or that the Evil Corporation® that now owns the Guild name makes many models with Exploitative Chinese Labor®.
One wonders how many of these Gaia worshipers have actually spent time out in nature. Precious few, I’ll wager. If they had bothered to spend some time above the tree-line somewhere once or twice, they’d realize Mother Gaia is one cold-hearted bitch.
And their T-shirts would read: “Hydrocarbons? Fuck Yeah!”
“Having less is actually very freeing.”
Diogenes figured that out 2300 years ago. But it is one thing to decide for yourself to free yourself of possessions, it is another thing entirely to decide to free someone else of his possessions.
So… wait… the left is now *for* austerity?
Rumor is they plan to invade the stock exchange today. Will this be America’s “Sod off, Swampy!” moment?
Albeit while shivering in the dark.
Now, now, every few hours a sun does pop up from the horizon. So if one is far enough north or south of the equator, one can then go about shivering in the light . . .
Because nothing says, “I care about the environment,” like leaving heaps of trash for someone else to deal with.
Around here, that’s a well established result of hipsters, and rather prolly elsewhere . . .
Locally, the only reason Dolores Park hasn’t gotten too trashed recently is because the entire park is getting re-engineered, thus making difficult any sessions of showing up to toss garbage about . . .
A confederacy of dunces.
“Based on numerous news reports, somewhere in the neighborhood of 310 to 400 thousand people participated in the People’s Climate March on Sunday… Yet the results of the U.N.’s Global Survey for a Better World… show “Action taken on Climate Change” at the very bottom… the abyss… of things that matter most to families around the globe… Looks like the 310 to 400 thousand people who marched in Manhattan yesterday have priorities that are out of touch with the rest of the occupants of this lovely planet.”

Occupy Wall Street II: The Return Of The Stench.
This is like those photos of tea party nutters with misspelt signs which are supposed to show how dumb conservatives are. I bet the interviewer could have found dozens of very intelligent people to interview at that march but instead he went for the low hanging fruit. I guess this is the kind of journalism I’d expect from a Fox Business host. The footage of the fat guy wearing a ‘Too Big to Fail’ shirt was very funny though.
A moronic mass of students, idiots, wankers, nutters, communists, Maoists, sexual predators, Malthusians, misanthropes, drugged up weirdos, narcissists, journalists, hangers on, trustafarians, fools, Khymer Rouge loonies and the media.
Note they never do these demos in Moss Side.
I’m impressed by the drifts of garbage, discarded cardboard signs and empty Starbuck’s plastic cups left behind by these lovers of Gaia. I guess saving the Earth and implementing socialism is too important to waste time properly disposing of one’s trash…that job is left to lesser people who work for the New York Department of Sanitation.
R. Sherman’s comment reminded me of an old Norm Borlaug quote: “Some of the environmental lobbyists of the western nations are the salt of the earth, but many of them are elitists. They have never experienced the physical sensation of hunger. They do their lobbying from comfortable office suites in Washington or Brussels. If they lived just one month amid the misery of the developing world, as I have for fifty years, they would be crying out for tractors, and fertilizer, and irrigation canals, and be outraged that fashionable elitists back home were trying to deny them these things.”
Reported by Gregg Easterbrook in a January 1997 interview for The Atlantic Monthly.
“Having less is actually very freeing.”
He’s talking about brains…
There wasn’t one rational comment made by anyone. Worse yet…the people calling for less were all old hippies wearing glasses made with plastic (oil). What a bunch of idiots. The scary thing is they are all ‘useful idiots’. What a sad and sorry state we are in when so-called adults can’t even utter logical arguments or sentences for that matter.
. . . . . . I’m not absolutely certain, but looking at the guy in the cow costume—and particularly with that use of just that size sign, and the built in punchline—, I think he’s been in the San Francisco St. Stupid’s Day Parade . . . .
“Having less is actually very freeing.”
Of course they want you to believe that. It will prepare you for the deprivation that will inevitably result under socialism.

Doubtful. We’re all too busy working for a living.

Seems relevant. By saying “something that isn’t being said”, of course, he means “something that is said virtually every day on Comment is Free”.

. . . . . . 1984 has ambiguities?!?!?!?!!
Somewhat related: “Gee, there sure are a lot of communists at this march.”
It’s odd as the economic-pollution we find enshrined in marxism always creates real-world pollution.
