Much of the group’s official website includes rhetoric pulled straight out of Marxist publications, echoing various talking points about the evils of capitalism, property ownership, “artificial borders,” and basic systems of social order, including police, prisons, and courts. Redneck Revolt refers to these public institutions as “systems of social control [that] only exist to serve the rich,” and calls for the end of the “nation-state project.” It lists the US Armed Forces alongside the Ku Klux Klan as having “undermined the struggle for freedom among all people.” The “Resources” page of the group’s website offers a number of publications that promote violence, including a 36-page manual called the “Mini-Manual of the Urban Guerrilla,” which advises readers on how to conduct urban warfare, with sections on “sabotage,” “kidnapping,” “executions,” and “terrorism.”

It does, I think, capture the dynamic.
Even if we assume that the purported conversation actually happened, and with Ms Dunham’s track record that seems not altogether wise, the implied moral landscape is still a little odd. In Lena’s world, eavesdropping is righteous, along with gratuitously endangering the livelihoods of people she doesn’t know, in order to flatter herself, publicly, as heroic and crusading. And the only position on transgenderism that anyone is permitted to take, even in private conversations, is wholehearted endorsement. It is, and must always be, stunning and brave.

Well, of course the rot is attacking STEM; the rot must propagate itself, regardless of consequences. Everything must be totalized and those nerds were having too much fun.
The fundamental course in engineering education is Statics, from which we get the free body diagram. There is no history in statics; it’s all technique and visualization. The only mention of particular people in statics was then name of the various truss types. There is one right answer, always. I am unable to figure out where “de-centering Western civilization,” and “uncovering contributions of women and other underrepresented groups” fit in an education almost entirely concerned with techniques, principles, and standards. Such things aren’t just a dilution of an engineering education, they are utterly alien and irrelevant intrusion.
And I know it’s old news, but is there anyone more sexist then someone who says that teachers “contribute to the masculinization of the domain that unfairly holds students to men’s higher levels of achievement and participation as a measure of success”?

Generally, math/engineer/STEM students tend to respect competence over politics, especially shrill politics.
Since the SJW crowd is heavy with credentials but light on competence, this is deemed “unfair”, in much the same way that Asian parents are finding that their children are systematically being blocked from various universities in favour of less-talented minorities. This is because their offspring have the “unfair” advantage of having stable family lives with two parents present, who teach them values like doing their homework, and so they get better grades. This is “white privilege”, because whiteness isn’t just for Caucasians anymore.

Heh. Given the evident zeal for updating it, triumphantly, it sounds exhausting. In over a decade of doing this, I’ve blocked maybe six or seven people – for habitual, tedious trolling, usually.

No disrespect, but I think that is overstating it a bit. All AA did was basically pat her on her pointy head and tell her there was no there there.

As for my thoughts on American Airlines, I hadn’t followed the specifics of the situation beyond what was initially reported. But at the time the story I had seen was that AA had apologized for their employees’ supposed behavior. In fact, IIRC AA was digging in trying to find out who these dastardly women were. If I have it right, they only called off their own dogs because it looked like LD made the whole thing up. Not because it was irrelevant to running an airline. But if I’m wrong on that, please let me know.

Well, again, I suspect it’s more that she’s neurotically leftist, i.e., pretentious and insecure, and willing to say whatever she imagines will affirm that posture, however insulting, incoherent or absurd it may be, and regardless of whether it’s consistent with reality, or even consistent with last week’s attitudes and slogans. As a snapshot of the human condition, or at least a snapshot of our expensively educated betters, it’s not exactly life-affirming.
To recap. A Google software developer with a PhD in biology writes a polite, researched and politically centrist memo suggesting there’s a leftist groupthink problem in the company, and that men and women on average have differing preferences and abilities, albeit with a large overlap, and that perhaps people should be treated as individuals rather than as mascots of allegedly oppressed identity groups.
This is immediately met with ludicrous and wilful mischaracterisations by “social justice” Twitter and the ‘progressive’ media, including deliberately deleting the memo’s links to supporting data, a general refusal to engage honestly with the author’s points, or in some cases even to read them, baseless accusations of every ‘ism’ going, personal doxxing, boasts of blacklisting, and demands that the author of the memo be fired for his heresy. On grounds that his arguments are “violently offensive” and in need of being “silenced.” He was, you see, “committing violence” with his statistics.
All of which rather proves the point about leftist groupthink and its reliance on hysteria and intimidation.
If anyone still imagines that the left’s choke-hold on academia isn’t a significant problem, an ongoing cultural rot, incidents like this suggest… otherwise.
