Brand Loyalty
The modern world is a strange and wondrous place:
A neighbour came home from work around 1 am and found a man staggering around the parking lot covered in blood. When police interviewed the man about what had happened, the man told them he and his roommate had got into a heated debate over whether the iPhone or the new Samsung smartphone is better.
Such was the passion on the subject,
The roommates’ argument escalated and they ended up stabbing each other with broken beer bottles. One of the men smashed a bottle over the back of the other man’s head.
Both men are expected to make a full recovery. However,
Police did not respond when our photographer asked which phone is better.
Feel free to glass each other in the comments.
It’s like twitter but in real life.
Incidentally, if anyone is looking for video reviews of such devices, I recommend Marques Brownlee and Erica Griffin. Erica in particular is frighteningly thorough. She can bang on at length about colour temperature and subpixels, and on occasion she actually uses a microscope.
When drunk, such trivial matters take on surreal importance.
Also worth a squint, PocketNow, BTEKT and Lisa’s Mobile Tech Review.
How about just rejoicing in a world where we have a choice?
How about just rejoicing in a world where we have a choice?
He’s being reasonable. After him!
Fortunately, they weren’t discussing XBox vs. Playstation2. Those arguments always end in gunfights.

I have, very occasionally, been drunk, such that maintaining my usual cat-like grace has proved more difficult than expected. But even then I’ve never felt compelled to disagree quite so emphatically. That’s what the internet is for.
Spectrum vs. Commodore 64 would have ended in all out thermonuclear war, if we’d had the hardware.
Oh, dare I say vi/vim vs. emacs? Windows vs. Mac vs Lynix? Java vs C#? This is why God in his infinite wisdom granted very limited upper body strength to the geek-inclined . Otherwise there’d never be any iPhones or Samsungs for “normal” people to beat each other with beer bottles over each other’s heads about. It’s just more proof of a Divine plan.
Names and pictures should be required in incidents such as this. People have a right to be warned.
It’s a strange, tribal world, the whole phone fan thing. With “unboxing” videos, in which people video themselves unwrapping their latest purchases, often getting quite breathless and excited as they promise a “full unboxing” experience, which seems to entail a lot of fondling of various ports and endless stroking of the latest five-inch Super-AMOLED display. And I’ve seen threads where one faction is celebrating the fact that a rival tribe’s new phone will eventually bend or shatter if you apply enough force to break a small child’s wrist.
I’ll just sit back and watch … I still have a dumb-flipphone.

Only to sub-literate, semi-feral, under-socialised obsessives, surely?
Can anyone recommend a good value in Win tablets? No, seriously. If possible, w/DVD drive and HDMI out.
Ten,
take a look at this comparison of Windows tablets.

I have to say that we have tried Acer Iconia models (albeit in 2011) at work and they were rubbish, as were the Dell models with rotating screens. They all wound up being little more than battery operated paperweights!
We now buy Surface Pro 2s and 3s and they are very well built and our users love them. They are not cheap, but they are fast and robust. I’m not aware of any tablet that comes with a dvd drive built in, but something like this :

is only £22 – and there are well branded models at £15 – £20…
WIN TABLETS?
Bugger! Bloody HTML. Start again.
WIN TABLETS? <Smashes bottle>
“And I’ve seen threads where one faction is celebrating the fact that a rival tribe’s new phone will eventually bend or shatter if you apply enough force to break a small child’s wrist.”
Important info. I never knew how much force was needed to break one of those.
Now I know it’s as much as is needed to break a ph….
What? Why are you looking at me like that?
Sigh. The software wars have mutated.
Begun, the phone wars have. Yoda voice >
They could have just called each other on their respective mobiles and continued to slag each other off there. Or better still texted each other all the hatred they wanted… No wait, don’t the police spend zillions on monitoring vitriolic texts?
That’s what the internet is for.
Hear hear!
I’ve come to believe that The Real World is where people go to escape from Internet drama.
Least that’s what I do.
Also, my phone is so dumb it doesn’t even flip.
I WORK in IT, spending half my day in hand-to-hand combat with hardware and software that’s too new to work right.
Teh Bling, I am not impressed by it.
Oh, dare I say vi/vim vs. emacs? Windows vs. Mac vs Linux? Java vs C#? This is why God in his infinite wisdom granted very limited upper body strength to the geek-inclined.
It’s also why God invented Nerf projectiles, with which our office is well-supplied. There’s large bin where you return them should you find them in your cube.
Yes, these guys are developing the very software that might someday save the world. If Nerf wars are what it takes to keep them happy, then Nerf wars there will be.
Can anyone recommend a good value in Win tablets? No, seriously. If possible, w/DVD drive and HDMI out.
. . . . You’d have to plug in the DVD and I’ve not been bothering with alternate viewing issues, but I’ve been getting good use out of my T100 of a year’s ownership and some months’ steady reading use . . . With way and way more texts turning up in electronic form, no way am I printing ’em out, and equally so not bothering with a reader, thus I have dumped a great mass of the unread onto the hard drive and have been combing through that with great regularity and near effortless ease. Lately, I also needed to dump in the text and referred to files of an essay regarding using current, first rate, and free of charge computer game production software to make any movie one wishes, and the visual quality in watching the videos has been quite excellent as well . . .
I have, very occasionally, been drunk, such that maintaining my usual cat-like grace has proved more difficult than expected. But even then I’ve never felt compelled to disagree quite so emphatically.
Ah, but I spend a lot of time around Russians.
Only to sub-literate, semi-feral, under-socialised obsessives, surely?
Or Russians.
Incidentally, if you want to see a proper flame war where information, mis-information, accusations, insults, sabotage, hissy-fits, threats, propaganda, and lies are the norm among plenty of factual and useful information, look no further than the Canon vs Nikon thread on any photography forum.
Samsung is better, of course. Or any other brand, this opinion being based on my impression of Apple fanboys. God, those people are annoying!
Could your phone survive the Nutella test?

Could your phone survive the Nutella test?
Eww. No, no, no.
Eew. No, no, no.
It does seem a waste of a perfectly good £600 phone. And of Nutella.

Apparently I’ve “used up my allowance of free articles for this month” (i.e., one) and I don’t have a Spectator subscription. But I think I can guess where Mr Batholomew’s piece is going.
It’s very obvious Mr Newman that Canon is the only logical choice. (A professional photographer whose father unfortunately owns a Nikon (but has a sense of humor about the whole thing.))
