Better Out Than In, I Suppose
Burdened as she is by deep political insight and enormous talent, Ms Yoko Ono wishes to share something with you.
That is all. Carry on.

On an artistic level I think I prefer this one.

I see you have an ear for these things.
I don’t think she understands how symbolic it is.
I don’t think she understands how symbolic it is.
I suspect that would require a level of self-awareness that’s unavailable to her.
.
I always think of how badly she treated poor Julian.
Mark Chapman deserves a second chance.
Imagine if Yoko never hooked up with John Lennon. It’s easy if you try.
I’d like to thank our host for keeping us up to date on arts and culture.
You deserve no less.
Oh, that sounds like a nasty case of constipation. I wonder if I should recommend Dulcolax to the eminent lady.
Oh, that sounds like a nasty case of constipation.
More like a kidney stone, and Yoko is living proof that P.T. Barnum was right.
The scary thing is somewhere, someone finds that profound.
oh geez, when will the accusations and whining stop?
Mr William Burr offers a critique of Ms Ono:

…when will the accusations and whining stop?
Lindy West – histrionic well known to those who frequent Dave’s Place – never, in her case.
Part the first, a BFO, seeing as how “we” (meaning they, of course) failed rather miserably at that. Part the second, she might want to take note that “we” (meaning they, of course) were beaten like a Chinese gong in local elections.
When you surround yourself with clowns, don’t be surprised when a circus breaks out.
We have “children to teach”. Did the rest of you see this b^tch? Careful. Stomach turning.

Did the rest of you see this b^tch?
Leftist parent of the year.
What amazes me is that she actually made a video of her abhorrent behavior and posted it for others to see. Is she expecting applause?
Is she expecting applause?
Again, there are levels of self-awareness that are cruelly / hilariously unavailable to some people.
True narcissism is the abandonment of the self in favor of the image, as you know, David. How can you be aware of that which no longer exists?
Narcissus himself was entranced as he stared, not at his self, but his image. Then he fell in and drowned.
How nice to hear from some one who married a rich, famous person.
Is she expecting applause?
I think it probably helps if you don’t conceive of your political preferences as a substitute religion. That way, you’re less likely to use your own children as props in some ongoing psychodrama, or to mistreat them as in the video above, or to drag them into heated scuffles and use them to block fire escapes, as happened during several Occupy protests, or to put four-year-olds on train tracks to show how radical you are.
Is she expecting applause?
Won’t this ultimately backfire? One can only lie to kids for so long before they realize that Santa doesn’t exist. The difference is, most of us don’t begrudge our parents fibbing to bring happiness to our lives. Turning a childhood into a fabricated nightmare is a different matter entirely.
We have abortion pills to stockpile…and children to teach
Um…
Turning a childhood into a fabricated nightmare is a different matter entirely.
Presuming the kids actually grow up. No guarantee these days.
Somewhere, in a campus safe space in America, a future president is coloring in a coloring book.
Amid the post-election campus hysteria, with its “safe spaces,” therapy dogs, optional exams, etc., Glenn Reynolds adds this:
That, as they say.
.
One more time.
It should be on a T-shirt, really.
Presuming the kids actually grow up. No guarantee these days.
Speaking of which…
And in case some of you have forgotten it, let’s revisit this.
No, don’t thank me. The pleasure was all mine.
They scrubbed it from their site: http://www.thecollegefix.com/post/29922/
Don’t know if they canceled it, tho. Insty:
Forgive the repetition.
One can only lie to kids for so long before they realize that Santa doesn’t exist.

Isn’t John Lewis now being castigated for cruelly destroying that myth with their current Christmas advert?
On the upside, they do sell some awfully nice shirts.

Here, let me make up for the repetition by providing Steyn, on 11/11:
Emphasis mine.
As has been frequently observed here, the Left collectively functions as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (and Borderline for the feminists). One of the “tells” of NPD is that whatever they accuse you of, that’s what they’re up to, and the hell of it is that you can never, EVER get them to see that.
They’re like trees growing in the mouth of a canyon: when young they were pliable, but they’ve grown into a bent position and you can’t straighten them up without breaking them.
I understand how people are delighted in watching left-wing angst, but I find it disturbing more than anything. It reinforces that we’re dealing with some genuinely dangerous people who may affect snowflake delicacy but who will also Go Nazi as Dorothy Parker predicted.
If and when a hot civil war breaks out the remains of the Republic, I know who will throw the first punch and also who will play dirtier.
And the side that plays dirtiest is usually the side to win. The Kulaks, alas, are unavailable for comment.
I’d also like to randomly observe that if you’re struggling with a depressive episode, reading Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” is not an apt remedy.
Let’s revisit this
Why the sudden burst of sadism, David?
BTW, I may be mistaken, but I believe Yoko links are an AoSHQ version of a “rickroll”.
I got into quite a few post-election Twitter volleys with people from both sides: protest sympathizers and Trumpistas alike.
I was able to talk a black man off the ledge (somewhat) regarding the danger he is NOT in from a Trump admin. Got to the point where we mutually followed each other because he seemed a decent chap who’d also happened believed all the awful things people said Trump would usher in regarding minorities, and he was genuinely afraid. Lives in the suburbs, married to a white woman, resents the “poor, urban, stupid” stereotype of black men that came from Trump the consummate New Yorker. (Can’t say i blame him.)
During that dialog, though (the purpose of which was to see if I could find one reasonable person from the other side to reason with), a couple of Trump supporters creeped in (emphasis on “creep”), and one accused me of trying to convince the black man that I was one of the “good white people.”
(Which, maybe I was, but that’s not a bad thing if he turns out to be reasonable enough to listen. And he did.)
The creepy guys got into the Trumpista chauvinism and denying that the alt-right is white nationalism (but even if it were, what’s wrong with that, because SJWs), and I had to mute the both of them after awhile because they were indulging in the same creepy identity politics that the Left indulges, only with the polarity reversed.
“It’s only natural for people to prefer their own kind,” said one whose entire Twitter identity was wrapped up in neo-Templar iconography and being the “chaplain” of the new whatever movement. Reclaiming Western Culture or something.
He became apoplectic over my insistence that nature is fallen and so we shouldn’t call it good just because it’s natural. “How dare you dismiss God’s natural order of THINGS?” he sputtered. After which I pointed out that God himself declared Nature to be Fallen and then hit the Moo-tay button.
I’m 53 and life is too short.
The fact that SJWs did in fact birth this reactionary white chauvinism does not make it anodyne nor irrelevant nor a way to balance things out. As I’ve explained before, a photo and its negative are intimately related—the negative is “not a remedy nor a repudiation and definitely not an improvement” over the photo.
Cultural identity isn’t itself a problem, but when you mix ANYTHING with politics—which is another word for “power struggle”—that thing is destroyed. I would hate to see the last vestiges of Western Civ discredited for decades because people who rightly identify the SJW excesses (so carefully cataloged in this blog) become the very unflattering photo-negative of their opponents.
I hope I don’t have to emphasize here that the ethos of Western Civ is individualism, judging a man by his character instead of the circumstances of his birth, and recognizing the humanity in your opponent (even if it’s excruciatingly hard to do in the case of Generation Snowflake) to the point of coming to a decent compromise.
And most of all, that anyone who comes to America and adopts the American civic religion (so to speak) is someone who you’d welcome as a neighbor any day of the week and twice on Sunday. (I’ll leave it to the Brits to translate that into their own vernacular.)
Things will get worse before they get better. Our only hope is that college students are naturally receptive to the idea that their elders (faculty and staff) are full of it, regardless of what “IT” is.
One last thing: Good news this time.
We had an all-hands meeting on Wednesday for our company, the largest IT security company in the world, headquartered in Silicone Valley. (San Fransisco Bay Area.)
(I was originally hired by a scrappy little start-up [ <100 employees], which was acquired by a medium-sized company [~1500 employees], and recently acquired by the struggling behemoth [~11,000 employees]. Lucky for the behemoth, the CEO of the middle-sized company is now the CEO of the big one and he's installed his people in the top positions. It will struggle no more.)
During the Q&A, someone asked him what the implications of the U.S. elections were for the company. He recognized what he was really being asked and very wisely said, “IT security is a bipartisan issue. Full stop.”
Didn’t say anything to indicate which side he favored, didn’t make any stray comments or take any gratuitous digs, which might mean he’s not left-wing at all. The man is Australian (love the accent) and so is statistically likely to be a garden-variety Ozzie liberal, but maybe he’s just smart. (Started out as a software developer, but turns out he’s really good at running companies. That combination of skills is as rare as conservatives in academia.)
Some years ago, right after his medium company acquired my start-up, he stated that as a company we would not fulfill requests by national governments to spy on their citizens. We have the technology to do what Snowden revealed that the NSA was doing; however, the product line of the medium company cannot be purchased off the shelf and installed by customers: professionals from our company have to survey the existing network, determine the requirements, and do the installation.
So we can decide what gets sold to whom.
(That said, we sell our wares to ministries of defense and other gubmint agencies world-wide, but they’re deployed to protect the gubmint networks against hacking, not to see what’s happening outside their .gov or .mil domains.)
Anyway, it is good to see someone in a position of power and influence turn down the opportunity to be a total ass, as Glenn Lowry, Director of the Museum of Modern Art (described in the Steyn link in a previous post of mine).
Given the length and number of my recent comments I can see that the ADDerall has kicked in and it’s time to do the dishes.
@Di
Silicone Valley? I thought that was in L.A. Or the Vegas Strip. 😀
Oh, and BTW, I agree with your sentiments regarding the so-called “Alt-Right.” I think there’s a good likelihood that many, if not most, are agents provocateur.
Yoko should sell that as a ringtone.
Di,
Speaking of Steyn,
This week, almost two decades after the Starr Report, the Clintons finally reached what Ken called “completion”. To coincide with the new bargain rates for Chelsea’s speeches on diarrhea in Africa, SteynOnline is also holding an everything-must-go sale as we frantically unload roomfuls of Clinton columns we are never going to need again.
Oh please let that be so!
We had an all-hands meeting on Wednesday for our company, the largest IT security company in the world, headquartered in Silicone Valley. (San Fransisco Bay Area.)
Hmmm. Anywhere near a Bart station?
I believe I will start wearing a diaper pin as a signal that the buttercups should grow up.
I dunno, those things look kinda pointy and dangerous, Darleen. Unsafe!
Silicone Valley? I thought that was in L.A. Or the Vegas Strip
Foiled by spellcheck.
Silicon
But then, I’m in software, not hardware.
Ain’t been around much as I was pursuing a life of Zen. But these fucking crybabies have done busted me out of it! I got long important emails from two different travel agencies, the spokestwats of each nattering on that even though the WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD has been elected president, they will still offer cheap airfare. My Facebook feed ranges from those who are determinedly determined not to react, to those who are in full screaming hysteria YOU DID THIS TO US YOU WANT US TO DIE TRUMP WILL KILL US ALL AND YOU WILL LET HIM!!!eleventy!! complete with gratuitous safety pins, threats to go murder Trump, and more threats to shut down the entire country, if they can keep their crybaby focus long enough. My GAWD, David, I don’t know why it is, but when I found my Zen had got completely fucked up today, I instantly thought of you…
Oh, and AGAIN there’s this bullshit about “safe houses” and “underground railroads” for LGBTQ etc. people and women seeking abortions, as certainly Trump HATES the GAYS and TEH Wimmen seeking abortions, and they’ll have to hide in the shadows and dart around at night and the SAFETY PINS!!!
I forgot. When Bush was elected, there was ALSO the BS of “safe houses” and “Underground railroads” blah, and I’m pretty sure Reagan also wanted to kill them all but just didn’t get around to it.
It’s like the SJWs live in an entirely different world from the sane people.
.
“Isn’t John Lewis now being castigated for cruelly destroying that myth with their current Christmas advert?”
Which advert is that again?
From the May, 1970 National Lampoon:
Horrorscope (phrenology)
June 15, 1970 (social mobility). Beatle John Lennon’s wife, Yoko Ono, draws 5,000 people to London’s Albert Hall for a “Beatle” performance. Beatles perform for 15 minutes, then leave stage. Yoko shaves legs, inspects nostrils and shrieks into microphone for one and a half hours. Audience finally gets fed up and beats the crap out of her.
When Bush was elected, there was ALSO the BS of “safe houses” and “Underground railroads” blah, and I’m pretty sure Reagan also wanted to kill them all but just didn’t get around to it.
I think this is the first time that Americans have taken to the streets en masse to protest an election on the day AFTER it took place.
It’s about as unseemly as it gets, and it speaks volumes about the harm Obama’s SJW boosterism has done.
I’m pretty sure Reagan also wanted to kill them all but just didn’t get around to it.
The leftist hysteria this week is strikingly similar, yes.
What I find most amusing is that they’re yelling about Mrs Clinton “winning the popular vote” (by 400,000 I believe – a mere 0.3%) and the Electoral College system is “undemocratic” and must be abolished. Yet, in 2004, George W Bush “won the popular vote” by more than 3 million, but they were banging on about a “stolen election!” because of the close vote in Ohio that put Bush over the top.
Screaming garbage babies, as Iowahawk calls them.
Darleen,
Isn’t the diaper pin so they can pin their mittens to their jackets year-round?
theyre now saying this diaper pin thing started in the UK after Brexit. Don’t recall that. Seems it would have popped up here?
David, I don’t know why it is, but when I found my Zen had got completely fucked up today, I instantly thought of you…
No refunds, credit note only.
Personally I think Yoko does a poor re-enactment of When Harry Met Sally.
That x10.
That x10.
Well, it seems to me that in broad terms there’s an asymmetry of psychology. It’s one of things I hope this blog has illustrated over the years. And which may help explain why the election of the Labour Party over here, resulting in years of rapacious, unsustainable socialism, didn’t result in mobs of non-leftists smashing cars, setting fire to occupied buildings and rioting for three days solid.
And yet on the left, the threshold for thuggery, rioting and collective delinquency – and mental contortion to excuse it – seems to get lower every time.
@ Dicentra
I hope I don’t have to emphasize here that the ethos of Western Civ is individualism,
Outside of parts of Northwest Europe and the Anglosphere, it really isn’t. You’ll find that Southern Europe – Southern Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece and Southern France – are very different. We are the exception, not the rule.
I believe I will start wearing a diaper pin
The following paragraph from the Vox article you linked to jumped out at me:
The “safety pin” symbol was inspired by the 2014 #illridewithyou movement in Sydney, Australia. where people offered to sit next to Muslims who felt threatened on their commutes — at the time, there was fear of an Islamophobic backlash after a terrorist attack in Sydney left two hostages and the gunman dead (one of the hostages was killed by a bullet ricochet).
It jumped out at me mainly because it reminded me of this sequel to the #illridewithyou story, related by Rachael Jacobs herself, the woman who began the hashtag (my italics):
I saw a woman on the train start to fiddle with her headscarf.
Confession time. In my Facebook status, I editorialised. She wasn’t sitting next to me. She was a bit away, towards the other end of the carriage. Like most people she had been looking at her phone, then slowly started to unpin her scarf …
I wanted to talk to her, but had no idea what to say. Anything that came to mind seemed tokenistic and patronising. She might not even be Muslim or she could have just been warm! …
Rather than quiz her about her choice of clothing, I thought if I simply offered to walk her to her destination, it might help.
I wanted to tell her I was sorry for so many things – for overstepping the mark, for making assumptions about a complete stranger and for belonging to a culture where racism was part of her everyday experience.
But none of those words came out, and our near silent encounter was over in a moment.
My second status was written as a heartbreaking postscript to my first. While the woman appeared to appreciate my gesture, we had both left defeated and deflated. What good is one small action against an avalanche of ignorance?
Yes, what good indeed!
Rachael Jacobs lectures in Creative Arts Education (Dance, Drama and Music) at the Australian Catholic University […] She has completed several arts education research projects addressing social justice issues as they intersect with artistic engagement.
This, via Ace, seems oddly symbolic.
I wonder if the horse understands just how much she hates him.
This, via Ace, seems oddly symbolic.
In a battle of wits my money’s on the horse.
From Vox
… there was fear of an Islamophobic backlash after a terrorist attack in Sydney left two hostages and the gunman dead (one of the hostages was killed by a bullet ricochet).
As I was focussed on other things, I only just now noticed the parenthetical “one of the hostages was killed by a bullet ricochet”.
Can activist journalism – a journalism obsessed with ‘discourses’ – sink any lower than that? I mean, how else are we intended to read that other than in the sense that the armed hostage taker was only really responsible for one of the two fatalities?
If anything is broken, it’s not democracy but the press.
I’m starting to come round to the idea that the impact of GamerGate might actually have been far more significant than I first realised.
While on the face of it, it seems to have been fairly trivial and only of importance to people who like gaming, I also think it was probably the first time when large numbers of mainly apolitical people suddenly came face to face with the brazen hypocrisy, lies and cronyism; the absolutely egregious absence of fact-checking or even a pretence at impartiality; the dishonesty and moral posturing of large swathes of the mainstream media.
And it was also the first time that large parts of that mainstream media thought nothing of promoting and backing the most awful people in the name of a bankrupt ideological cause.
Cops love The Donald!
… there was fear of an Islamophobic backlash after a terrorist attack in Sydney left two hostages and the gunman dead (one of the hostages was killed by a bullet ricochet).
They’re always afraid of an ‘islamophobic’ backlash that never happens, but not of actual muslim violence. Scum.
I think the US election has opened a lot of peoples eyes to the bias of the media.
Sorry, I seem to have a bee in my bonnet today … but talking about the bias in the media:
Laurie Penny‘s blog, Penny Red began in 2007 and already by 2010 had been nominated for the Orwell Prize. I don’t have details for how many subscribers she has – or had – but if her Twitter account is anything to go by, let’s be generous and say it’s 150,000.
Those 150,000 subscribers and her blog managed to propel the privately educated Oxford graduate into the mainstream media with columns in The Guardian, The New Statesman and slots on TV news, mainly the BBC and Channel 4.
Kate Smurthwaite, yet another privately educated Oxford graduate has a Youtube channel followed by just 1,500 people and yet – as a ‘feminist comedian’ – she regularly appears on Sky, the BBC, Channel 4 news and elsewhere.
Contrast this with Carl Benjamin better known as Sargon of Akkad.
If I remember rightly, he was raised on an air force base as his father served in the RAF Regiment and is university educated, but not an Oxbridge graduate and in 2014 he was an unemployed would-be game designer.
In just two years, he has racked up a following of over 450,000 subscribers on his main Youtube channel – that is three times as many as Laurie Penny has on Twitter – and yet where is his column in the mainstream media? Where is his invite onto the BBC or onto Channel 4 News? As far as I know, a single clip of less than 20 seconds was once used in an edition of BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour and he has never been heard from again through those kind of channels.
I’m not making an argument about the quality of his content, but what possible justification can the BBC, Channel 4 News etc. have for continually calling on the likes of Penny and Smurthwaite while completely sidelining someone who is likely three times more popular than Penny and nearly three thousand times more popular than Smurthwaite?
Is it any wonder no one in the mainstream media can understand why Trump’s election came as a total surprise to them?
Laurie Penny’s blog, Penny Red began in 2007 and already by 2010 had been nominated for the Orwell Prize.
We live in an age of routine and largely unregistered irony.
Is it any wonder no one in the mainstream media can understand why Trump’s election came as a total surprise to them?
Who was the US journalist who said, upon Nixon’s election, that she couldn’t understand how he’d won because she didn’t know anyone who’d voted for him?
It’s weaponized (by manipulators) emotional and mental fragility.
On a lighter note.
Pauline Kael famously commented, after the 1972 Presidential election, ‘I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they are I don’t know. They’re outside my ken. But sometimes when I’m in a theater I can feel them.’”

Could you describe your assailants sir?

Speaking of Orwell.
And in peace and love news…
Remember kids, the best way to set up a clandestine network of safe houses to hide “victims” of the new brown-shirted regime is to advertise same on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
And in peace and love news…
That is unpossible, Nostradamus has spoken.
No doubt all those protesters are actually right-wingers pretending to be Progressives in order to make the political left look bad.
What?
Who?
Enormous talent? Are you sure you have the right Yoko Ono?
Jonathan,
Who was the US journalist who said, upon Nixon’s election, that she couldn’t understand how he’d won because she didn’t know anyone who’d voted for him?
Pauline Kael. Her actual quote is somewhat more verbose:
“I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they are I don’t know. They’re outside my ken. But sometimes when I’m in a theater I can feel them.”
She didn’t know them, but she could feel them.
She didn’t know them, but she could feel them.
Spooky.
In 2008 Adam Carolla picked Donald Trump to be president in 2016. Missed on the First Lady, however…

Brilliant! And by that I mean my thoughts exactly.
What the left is hysterically accusing us of tells us what fantasies are getting “soak time” in their collective hive mind.
I wonder if the horse understands just how much she hates him.
It seems unlikely.
A woman argues with NYPD officers as she takes part in a protest against president-elect Donald Trump
I can’t help noticing the small boy trying to hold his mother back while she screams at random police officers. Again, what kind of parent drags a small child to a protest that is very likely to devolve into scuffles, violence and arrests, as previous protests had, and as indeed was the case?

She’s unfit to have a kid, and you can see the Cop thinking exactly the same thing.
I’ve never heard of this guy, but he rips Hillary apart in a surprisingly civilised way in this compilation vid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xnw8JRpXdAc
She’s unfit to have a kid,
It reminded me of this and this from the Agonies of the Left series. The words “human shield” and “parental neglect” came to mind. Also, “colossal self-indulgence.”
Got charged with slapping a police horse. Well done.
http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2016/03/video-trump-protester-charged-with-slapping-police-horse-at-kc-protest-is-communist-agitator/
On a lighter note.
Funny that the account is called “Words on a Screen”, but the tweet is a video that doesn’t play in my browser.
I’ve never heard of this guy, but he rips Hillary apart in a surprisingly civilised way in this compilation vid:
Can these people actually write? I find it much quicker to read an article than to sit through a Youtube video. Less taxing on bandwidth for those of us who don’t have unlimited bandwidth, too.
Jonathan, that kid in the photo, holding his mom (?) back and obviously terrified–poor little guy, sacrificed for an adult’s need for drama.
I’ve talked to several people since the election who are convinced that Trump is going to round up gay people, send them to concentration camps and torture them into become straight… I mean FFS, how do you even begin when confronted with such paranoia?
Considering when Caitlyn Jenner asked Trump which bathroom she should use, he replied, “Whichever you want.”
“I can’t help noticing the small boy trying to hold his mother back”
It’s come full circle. SJWs acting like five year-olds, and now five year-olds being the sensible, rational actors. Like I said earlier – Trump should provide free psychiatric care and pot to our psychodramatic friends as part one of his health reforms.
No problem Spiny, I’ve been thinking about that quote a lot lately for some reason.
