The problem started with the Death of the Author, which is essentially the idea that what you’re analysing isn’t a communication filled with intended meaning by the author
“Death of the Author” originally meant that what the author said a text was about was not necessarily what the text was about, because the author may have unconsciously included other themes (or just been lying). It didn’t mean random psychological spelunking. As an obvious and recent example, the fact that Wesley Crusher is Gene Wesley Roddenberry’s author self-insert and Marty Stu is Death of the Author. Roddenberry never acknowledged this, but even the 14-year old Wil Wheaton figured it out.
Taking something that has a nugget of truth and corrupting it is what the Progressive Left do with everything.
Also, I suspect that 90% of the deep meaning that authors later confirm is intentional, was accidental. Hell, I’ve had people ask me if something or other I wrote was intentional and it’s so tempting to say yes and take the ego boost.
