Don’t know who on here might be in Florida but my wife just got a notice from Publix suggesting to start making hurricane preparations. As we are in Georgia right now I wasn’t aware one was closing in. So I just checked the forecast map. Apparently there is something called “Tropical Depression Nine” that is half way between Haiti and Columbia right now. Assuming these forecast idiots are right, and by my studied experience this far out they are almost always wrong…by hundreds if not a thousand miles, in five days it is “expected” to make landfall in the Tampa area. And I now see that our sainted Republican conservative…”conservative” governor Ron DeSantis, whom I do still (mostly) respect has issued a state of emergency for 24 counties in Florida.
In September of 2019, hurricane Dorian, yes a dangerous hurricane, was way out in the Atlantic. Central Florida, and areas to the north, absolutely lost their shit. Panic buying at grocery stores when the hurricane was still four or five days from conceivable landfall. Gasoline all across the state dried up. At work it was the main topic of conversation. I was stunned at the fear factor. I tried to tell people that being “in the cone” this far out was actually rather fortunate as my experience following such things told me it was more likely to hit Cape Hatteras, NC than central Florida. I was traveling up to Georgia for Labor Day week and was fortunate to have filled my tank before the panic set in. I had stopped in Gainesville for that Friday evening to have dinner with my nephew. There was no gas anywhere in Gainesville. Not even on the other side of town far from the interstate. Long lines of cars at the one gas station off the interstate that was selling limited gallons. The next day I was quite relieved, though not entirely surprised, to see gas available as I passed through Valdosta, GA about 30 miles north of the state line. Hurricane Dorian did do severe damage…to the Bahamas. It made land fall in the US several days later, I believe Wednesday in…Cape Hatteras, NC.
My point? What the living f*** is wrong with people? My God. Does nobody think for themselves? Cannot people reason risk, probabilities, etc. without always assuming and acting on the most awfullest worstest pants-pissingest possible scenario? This bloody thing, assuming it ever even becomes a hurricane, is as likely to hit Mobile, Alabama as any place in Florida. But hey, at least everyone got their Omicron boosters.
Hey, look!

And as for this shop teacher with the fake enormous boobs… I am really tired of seeing conservative…”conservatives” or “libertarians” making the bloody stupid rationalization that this a-hole is some sort of “hero” for exposing this. Like he’s the one. Like no one else has yet done so. Like it wasn’t totally and completely f***** absurd until just, juuuust now. With this specific guy. Who happened to know that his specific instance of absurdity would be the one, final absurdity that puts the nail in this absurd, clown world coffin. Because like…what?…God told him he would be The One? Like the kids whose time was being wasted are not more important? After absurdity on top of absurdity on top of absurdity there still was not enough absurdity that could not possibly in any other way be exposed as more absurd without having to disturb, annoy, distract, embarrass, and waste the time of these kids. Absurd.
Hey, look!
I’m morbidly curious how this is going to end. As Steve E mentioned, the school board cannot take any action without risking a massive, expensive lawsuit. Protestors need to recognize that and offer some option for the school board. Something like “We would rather pay the costs of a lawsuit than allow this freak to continue disturbing our children. That excuse is off the table. Now get rid of him.”
I don’t know. I’m still half convinced that like William Thomas, he’s not actually trans but just taking the piss.
while the audience for Bond films may be entertained by the various femmes fatales, they don’t much care about the hero’s romantic life or the prospect of him settling down and raising a family
I can just about understand why television has gone completely woke; the age-old rubric is that television is aimed at women and sports/movies are aimed at men because that’s how the viewing demographics break down. But this odd habit of trying to retool franchises to appeal to audiences that have no interest in the source material – whether it’s sensitive New Age Bond or Ally “She-Hulk” McBeal – just reminds me that studios really have no idea what people want.
I don’t think they care what people who do not practice the Woke religion want.

Like many others, I generally go to the cinema for two hours of escapist entertainment – and one of the things that I, like many others, wish to escape from is the pretentious, neurotic chiding that’s becoming all but ubiquitous elsewhere. Travelling across town to the local IMAX in the hope of some artful excitement and then finding that those same pretensions and ideological tics have been grafted onto the film – usually in a jarring, stilted, ham-fisted way – is not a pleasing experience. Just a little of it can sour a whole film and disrupt any suspension of disbelief. I.e., the thing one is paying for.

That.
That.
The result of woke retooling is typically bad writing and a disaffected audience. Whether it takes the form of anachronism or grating incongruity; or the plotting clearly being determined by who is black, or white, or female, etc., and what therefore cannot be permitted ideologically; or just naff, tin-eared lectures pretending to be dialogue and which undermine a protagonist and evaporate any charm they may have had – for example, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, She-Hulk, and other Marvel TV offerings.
More often than not, it just throws you out of the world that’s supposedly being created – a plausible definition of bad writing. And that sense of immersion – which is being disrupted, perhaps irretrievably – is precisely what you’re paying for. And which you’re then being cheated out of – by people who are busy congratulating themselves on their politics and daring, and who will dismiss, even pre-emptively, any criticism or dissatisfaction as being driven by sexism or racial bigotry or whatever, rather than the fact that what they’re offering, and expecting to be applauded for, simply isn’t good.
I am really tired of seeing conservative…”conservatives” or “libertarians” making the bloody stupid rationalization that this a-hole is some sort of “hero” for exposing this.
“Is” or “might be”? The former displays an absurd certainty. The latter displays an absurd “let’s consider all possibilities” similar to “maybe this man found unconscious was hit by a meteor rather than a mugger”.
Protestors need to recognize that and offer some option for the school board.
The left has shown me the way: It is now acceptable–even laudable–to protest at the homes of people you dislike. Therefore the kids should protest daily outside the teacher’s home, carrying signs reading “a pervert lives here” and “leave us alone you creep”.
Just a little of it can sour a whole film and disrupt any suspension of disbelief. I.e., the thing one is paying for.
Agreed. And I am very tired of autism-spectrum sci-fi fans and Mensa members who tell me “it’s only a little bit” and I should happily ignore it.

David, I don’t know how the double-posting happened. I’ll swear that I only clicked once.
“Is” or “might be”?
Yes. You caught me. ‘Might be’ would be the be I was looking for. To be fair to him, but most importantly to ourselves, we must consider it is also possible that the teacher is a Russian troller. A deep sleeper cell spy who has been activated to take down the Trudeau regi….wait a minute…
Like many others, I generally go to the cinema for two hours of escapist entertainment.
But that’s the very thing. Just as Princess C. says above, they don’t care what you want/are looking for. In the early/mid 80’s here in the US when film critics were all the rage and becoming big and powerful celebrities themselves, the Siskels and Eberts and Leonard Maltins, etc. etc. when they could not justify overt dismissal of blockbuster films like Spielberg and similar were making that people liked, they would throw the dismissive phrase of “middle class escapism” into the review or the preface or summary of the review. Eventually the film makers who were already leftist douches caught on. And thus here we are.
Bollywood.
Bollywood.
Heh. That’s exactly how I would’ve done it.
Bollywood
Damn I’d pay to see that! What movie is it?
Heh. That’s exactly how I would’ve done it.
Me, too. Utterly, absurdly impossible–but looks like great fun.
And this reminds me once again: Hollywood keeps recycling the same material over and over, trying to extract a last milligram of flavor out of well-chewed stories and characters. The very existence of Bollywood reminds us that there are vast numbers of other stories and storytellers around the world. As I remarked in an earlier thread, Amazon’s The Rings of Power promises to be a boring mess. Why not tells stories set in the lands to the South of Gondor and Mordor? Where the prevailing skin colors are brown to black? Tolkien wrote that at least one wizard was in that region, doing his part to defeat Sauron.
I thought the movie was RRR but it’s apparently Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva.
Drinker was raving (in a good way) about RRR.
Not sure if this clown has had an epiphany, or is just crying in his gluten free artisanal craft IPS because his own intersectional, free range, cruelty free, grass fed ox has been gored.
RTW dog’s breakfast.
People sure do go to a lot of effort with these piss takings, eh Farnsworth?
RTW dog’s breakfast.
It’s ludicrous, of course. Though I fear that our disillusioned woke-ling still has some way to go before being free of those laughably neurotic mental habits. And you do have to marvel at how some people can take so long to register the twisted and rather malevolent psychology in which they’ve chosen to be immersed, for years, and which they’ve merrily exploited in order to display themselves as superior beings.

Rankings: for white people who have never stolen anything, don’t hang out in nightclubs, don’t have a side bitch, don’t shoot people, studied while in school and worked their ass off, it sure is starting to feel like discrimination…
RTW dog’s breakfast
Even a dog would reject that breakfast.
“….although they were dress-wearing lesbians they were not femmes”
I don’t know whether to feel sorry for them or just laugh.
dress-wearing lesbians
Band name.
RTW dog’s breakfast.
I noticed how the writer Kier feelz if you’re not left you’re alt-right and THEN at the conclusion says this, as if Keir just discovered something entirely new …
Eureka! Kier’s now the “alt-right”, that straw-non-lefty “fashy” caricature she carries in her head even as conservatives and libertarians have held such beliefs for ages.
although they were dress-wearing lesbians they were not femmes
Not a freakin’ clue as to what the difference is, but further down this Kier person says that the party-planners only wanted to have a dress party, which if that’s the case, why were the dress-wearing lesbians not welcome? Or were they not wearing a dress that day?
I read the whole thing, and my brain cells are now in revolt, but what jumped out at me was the sheer amount of undiluted bigotry expressed there. Change the acronyms and specialty terminology and this could be about life in the Jim Crow South.
Also, that it seems to be a lot of work to be a proper leftie alphabet person these days. The mental contortions, the endless tests, the ever-changing lists of names for things and people to memorize, the sheer rigidity of it all.
dress-wearing lesbians
In my college days the old-school, jeans-and-work-shirt-wearing lesbians were very hostile towards young lesbians who wore dresses and makeup and even–horrors!–shaved their legs.
Update on Hurricane Ian…well not the hurricane itself so much as the panic…which honestly is more the point…people in Pittsburgh are now mad at me for telling people in Florida not to panic. See I’m an idiot. Which I kinda already knew because…well because. My decades of life in Florida pales in comparison to someone whose cousin’s aunt lived through hurricane Andrew. Seriously people, if you want to live in a sane world you are going to have to grow a pair and speak up. I cannot do this alone…ok, I’m obviously not alone and it’s a big, big world…but all the more reason…
PiperPaul, neither of those seems to be set in the legendary past like the linked clip. RRR is a 1920s story, and Shiva is a present-day super-hero picture (and going by the trailer I looked at, heavily invested in the sob-and-throb emotional range, a Bollywood red-flag for me).

Finally, a group I don’t want to marginalize.
Finally, a group I don’t want to marginalize.
I knew a few; nice people. I think the expression “lipstick lesbians” was common back then.

Oh. I was basing that guess off Twitter comments.

“This is not the representation we’re looking for”: Netflix slammed for adding LGBTQ tag to Jeffrey Dahmer series.
Emblematic of woke culture.
The Dylan dude fascinates me–morbid fascination. I cannot fathom what he does with the rest of his life. Does he support himself with these larping videos?
The fact that almost all of his supporters are straight females confuzzles me. What is going on with THAT? Maybe it is just that he thinks he is acting like a woman, but he is really just acting like a MAGA-Ultra-Uber-flaming gay guy–and some women gravitate to that kind of homosexual.
At least Dylan shaves. That guy who so earnestly explains he doesn’t have male privilege doesn’t even bother to get rid of the stubble.
Dylan doesn’t need helicopter therapy; he just needs to mercilessly mocked IRL, so he can’t block people.
And about the poopable baby models–I figured it for parody when I saw the Bushmen of the Kalahari shade. My black ex-husband called that “urple.”
Ccscientist, I suspect you are saying the link is correct, but my admittedly biased against feminism opinion re violence committed by women is wrong.? I’ll give you the bias,; the former, the data is pretty solid and indicates depressingly high levels of abuse, assault, and violence in lesbian relationships. That said, women are no less likely to commit acts of aggression than men, the insistence that this is not the case is a bizarre Victorian Era holdover fused with feminist resentment. I would like to see data for violence by women, not simply gay women, to contrast with both lesbian and male rates.. I suspect the reason that there is little/none, and has been none since well before Erin Pizzey’s dog was killed, is sociopolitical.
Re WTP’s peroration on hurricane/typhoon ignorance, the BBC shows its abysmal lack of meteorological knowledge:
Category 3 Typhoon Noru is travelling at speeds of 195 km/h (120 mph) as it heads towards Luzon, the country’s main island [The Philippines], after what forecasters called an “explosive intensification”.
It’s actually doing about 22 kph…
Update, because living in a world of insane panic driven nutcases who deny that they’re in a panic …well whatever…Note that when this “OMG, BE SAFE FLORIDA” started, it wasn’t even a named storm, it was still Tropical Depression Nine. And even I fell for the BS as it still is not a hurricane but a named tropical storm. The time to landfall keeps slipping backward by about 6 hours after each update. This is partly because the Cone is shifting west. Landfall was originally predicted (this is five days out mind you) slightly south of Tampa but now with the westward shift expected landfall is slightly east of Apalachicola. My oysters…sigh. When you think about it, if predictions are anywhere near as good as advertised, should the Cone ever shift? Keep my prediction of landfall in Mobile, AL in mind. I see right now there’s an “expectation” that this thing will intensify to a category 4 before dropping back down to a 3 and now showing predicted landfall as a cat 1.
None of this is to say that this storm will not intensify to a strong category 5 change direction and wipeout…well someplace. It is to say that in my general experience, the safest place to be five days out from an expected strong hurricane is smack dab in the center of the Cone. Rarely have these things stayed on track. The intensity predictions do seem to hold water (NPI) a bit better and should be watched more closely. But even intensity prediction is a factor of the expected path.
Typhoon Noru is travelling at speeds of 195 km/h
It’s actually doing about 22 kph
Surely you can’t expect people who are responsible for climate hysteria to know the difference between rotational and linear, can you? < / sarc>
the data is pretty solid and indicates depressingly high levels of abuse, assault, and violence in lesbian relationships.
I’ve been seeing occasional articles about that for at least the last 30 years, so we must have a good number of studies all saying the same thing. The cause remains unknown.
I would like to see data for violence by women, not simply gay women, to contrast with both lesbian and male rates..
I have read that heterosexual women are as violent as heterosexual men, but they are much less physically strong (and untrained in fighting) so they do less injury.
Must be a white upper-middle-class liberal Californian.

I think we do have to give that one a post of its own.
The evil dream never dies: Red love for all: Family is a terrible way to satisfy our desire for love and care, according to the writer and academic Sophie Lewis. The solution? Abolish it.
I wonder if she had terrible parents or just came under the sway of ideology. Probably the latter.
I wonder if she had terrible parents or just came under the sway of ideology.
The unhappy Ms Lewis, our feminist “theorist,” has been mentioned here before.
