Forbidden love
That’s heartbreaking. That’s a female dog that’s lost her puppies, she’s trying to get the chick to nurse.
I’m not entirely sure what’s happening here.
Whatever it is I like it.
“Stealth mode.”
If a sci-fi author invented cephalopods they’d be considerd ‘too far fetched’…
Morning, all.

For those who missed it.
A mindset, revealed.
“I respect you more than you respect you”
Jaw-dropping.
Jaw-dropping.
It does have a certain… obliviousness.
Mr Pavlovitz is apparently a “writer, pastor, and activist,” is terribly progressive, and is “committed to equality, diversity, and justice.” Which is why he likes to tell women what opinions they’re allowed to have. Because, you see, whenever they disagree with him, they don’t know their own minds.
And this, we’re told, is respect.
A guide to how it works, one and two.
If even they can’t remember it without a list, why should I give a sh*t?
Too much pleasure.
I need this as a gif.
And this, we’re told, is respect.
It’s just one step away from him beating a woman and claiming it is being done out of love, to teach her that she brought him to that place of violence and if she only understood how much he wants her to be happy, she’ll vote Democrat.
This is NOT why we need feminism. This is why we need firearm training.
“You’re going to need a bigger boat.”
The Terrible Sea Lion, indeed.
And this, we’re told, is respect.
That “Christian pastor” is acting in the spirit of communist Herbert Marcuse’s theory of Repressive Tolerance: Just as true tolerance requires the militant suppression of all who oppose communist tyranny, so under true Progressive Christianity respect means contempt for those who are not leftists.
I’m not entirely sure what’s happening here.

The authors of those crackpot articles are mostly female by a ration of 4 to 2. Coincidence?
Parenting of note.
Note the moment when the toddle squeaks “Shut the fuck up!” at the beleaguered store manager. The mother is teaching her child in many ways to be a barbarian who should be excluded from civilized society.

We need a poll. Would you take the tangerine jello being offered by the excited gentleman?
I’m sure that school board will be sure to disperse assaults equitably across ethnicities. The ideology here is that all people are identical and the only reason that some group gets in trouble more is racism. Just like the only reason almost all the store lootings are black is because of racism (or something).
Smaller than normal things: now THAT is what teen boys should be doing instead of posturing on instagram about their pronouns. Don’t “find” yourself, “make” yourself.
We need a poll. Would you take the tangerine jello being offered by the excited gentleman?
No, but I’d give him something painful if he didn’t shut up and remove his arm from my car. No charge.
No,
Yes, but – and I can’t stress this enough – it’s tangerine.
We need a poll. Would you take the tangerine jello being offered by the excited gentleman?
And speaking of hobos and bums, that reminds me, for some mysterious reason, of the closing sentence of Mark Twain’s The Facts Concerning the Recent Carnival of Crime in Connecticut:
“In conclusion, I wish to state, by way of advertisement, that medical colleges desiring assorted tramps for scientific purposes, either by the gross, by cord measurement, or per ton, will do well to examine the lot in my cellar before purchasing elsewhere, as these were all selected and prepared by myself, and can be had at a low rate, because I wish to clear out my stock and get ready for the spring trade.”
“We’ve decided to transition.”
Internalised misogyny?
I would like to see the text of the Freedom to Move Act.
“Freedom to move about their communities without fear.”
Fear of what? Being arrested for evading fares.
Solution: Buy a fare token!
Problem solved.
Thank you.
Adam: see that is what is wrong with ypeepo, just going around dealing with perfectly good grievances with simple, cheap solutions. How far toward the bottom of the barrel do you need to scrape to claim that enforcing train fares is oppression? Like the guy who told his local Target last year that if they didn’t stop arresting his people for shoplifting they would burn the store down. Hey, why is my Target closing?

The mother is teaching her child in many ways to be a barbarian…
People don’t need to be taught to be barbarians. A child is a natural-born tyrant — selfish, impatient, demanding, brutish. To turn a man into a gentled-man requires a dozen years or more of unrelenting training and discipline by parents, teachers, family members, neighbors — in this sense, it really does take a village. Failure to provide such guidance and discipline allows the little barbarians to continue as they are, until an actual grownup (usually an agent of the State, unfortunately) is summoned to take care of the problem.
It’s a similar dynamic as we see when Big Thinkers write pieces about the Causes of Poverty. There are none! Sit on your arse all day doing nothing and — voilà! — poverty!
(Sorry. It’s a pet peeve of mine that people will pretend that certain conditions require action and effort, when in fact they are more properly understood as starting conditions. “Ground states,” as it were.)

Interesting thread about famous self-identifying Latinx Beta O’Rourke
People don’t need to be taught to be barbarians. A child is a natural-born tyrant — selfish, impatient, demanding, brutish…
True, true. Although most children do also have natural inclinations to kindness and affection.
It’s a similar dynamic as we see when Big Thinkers write pieces about the Causes of Poverty.
They seem Strangely Uninterested in pondering the causes of prosperity, much less encouraging behavior likely to result in same.
When worlds collide.
When school discipline is something to “disperse across ethnicities.”
Infuriating, but still somehow not as bad as what Supt. Valeria Silva implemented in St. Paul ten years ago. Today’s linked article just talks about lighter punishments for darker skin tones. Plenty bad, and almost comical in the way it formalizes “diminished expectations,” but still falls short of the pinnacle we achieved here in the Saintly City.
Back in the day, we implemented a system whereby a teacher could not discipline black students unless he or she disciplined an equal number of white students. So your average white kid would get nailed to the wall for something like chewing gum in class, simply so that the teacher would have leeway to send a disruptive black student to the principal’s office. As I ranted later, “They essentially took a group of kids who were ill-behaved and resentful and gave them free rein to terrorize students and staff alike. At the same time, they took another group of kids who were more-or-less functional and turned them into resentful little shits.”
Honestly, I would not piss on that woman if she were on fire.

How do these defenders of barbarism get elected? /rhetorical question
Causes of poverty/prosperity: black activists seem to truly believe that white people are just handed out plum jobs for no reason. Yes it is true that a few seem to be incapable of doing their job and were perhaps hired because they are likeable or handsome/pretty or perhaps due to a rich uncle BUT most are not. Most whites have to actually do their jobs and work hard. If you look around my neighborhood, the men (of multiple races) are never found hanging on the corner or at da club. They are busy working, cutting grass, walking the dog, playing with the kids. They never get in a fight at work (like will smith), quit a job without a new one lined up, blow all their money on nonsense. It is hard being successful.
What did that, er, individual, say to the gentlemen videoing him?
I believe that the onlooker said “Please tell me you’re having a laugh,” and the subject responded in kind.
Which reminds me of a question that my wife and I came up with the other day: How do the producers of The Repair Shop determine when to include/not include subtitles? We’ll watch an episode where some lovely elderly Scotsman hands over a trinket and they subtitle his speech as though he were speaking Korean, and then a few episodes later they’ll have some Scouser or Geordie walk in and deliver a monologue that I can’t make heads nor tails of, with nary a hint from the producers as to what’s being said.
What gives?

I can’t honestly say that it’s a good film, but I did enjoy watching it, at least more than expected. It’s a bit like the 1980 Flash Gordon film, in that it sort of entertains despite in many ways being quite bad.

For those who crave the “waif in a famine” look, there is the Karl Marx diet.
Mostly non-existent anti-black racism is being replaced with real systemic institutionalized anti-white racism.
Leftism is a symptom of mental problems.
Karl Marx diet
…for everyone not named Karl Marx. Marx, himself, ate quite well at the expense of Engels, his wife’s family and mates down the pub. He’s Wimpy with an unruly beard–“I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.”
“in this sense, it really does take a village.”
It always did. The trouble with that expression in current usage, however, is that a village bears about as much resemblance to the modern regulatory state as a horse buggy does to an entire division of Sherman tanks. And in much the same way.
“It’s a similar dynamic as we see when Big Thinkers write pieces about the Causes of Poverty. There are none!”
Precisely what Hayek said. We shouldn’t be trying to examine the “causes” of poverty; poverty is the natural state. We should be examining the causes of wealth.
“As I ranted later, ‘They essentially took a group of kids who were ill-behaved and resentful and gave them free rein to terrorize students and staff alike. At the same time, they took another group of kids who were more-or-less functional and turned them into resentful little shits.’”
You say that as if it were unintentional. They want to build a new form of human society (fondly believing that such a thing is possible), therefore the old one has to be destroyed. Hence that, hence the obsession with the conflicts between our ancestors, hence “microagressions”, hence “gender fluidity”, hence… well, all of it. The revolutionaries win more power, and the conservative and uninterested are made to resent the authorities they once respected and clamour for their destruction (see, for example, the former Brexit Party’s support for abolishing the House of Lords). It’s a win-win.
“in this sense, it really does take a village.”

One of the many reasons I loathe and despise Hillary Clinton. And by extension the liberals who see nothing wrong with her tyrannical, corporatist ideology.
(see, for example, the former Brexit Party’s support for abolishing the House of Lords)
I missed that one.

“UCLA race and equity director tweets: ‘[we all] hope Clarence Thomas dies..’”
So, the avowed “antiracist” calls a black man an “Uncle Thomas” – a term I only hear from people very much like Mr Perkins. And somehow he doesn’t see what that says about him.
Special effects of note:
https://twitter.com/psychotronica_/status/1507393685213880341
A couple of these items have a common theme, namely that POCs are not fully responsible for their actions. Only whites are, apparently, to be treated as adults who can be held fully accountable.
Mr. Perkins racist: you see, if anyone is not fully on board with wokeness, and especially if a black man goes off the plantation, they are evil and deserve to die. The idea that anyone could see things differently, or care about, you know, the actual consequences of policies, is not on the table. If you point out that raising he min wage, for example, actually increases unemployment of young black men, they want to do it anyway.
David:
Calling a black man an “Uncle Tom” or “porch negro” is virulently racist, a way to keep Blacks on a political plantation. I’m astonished that there isn’t more outrage over it.
Calling a black man an “Uncle Tom” or “porch negro” is virulently racist
Such “anti-racists” as the Black Panthers used the epithet all the time back in the sixties.

cultcommunity.Linoleum is not “cool again”, firstly it was never cool; making it out of “renewable” resources will not change the plasticky look and feel, as well as dirt and grit adhering qualities it has always had.
I’m not entirely sure what’s happening here.
I don’t know either, David, but I could watch it all day.

Heh…my wife walked in the room while I was watching that…fortunately she preceded her arrival with an outraged “Look at what’s happening now!” and I was able to avoid…hmmm….a situation.

Aaaaand now that’s the one she actually just surprised me and caught me watching. Great. Hopefully the denial was plausible…
Linoleum is not “cool again”
Maybe that website is being paid by to whore for the manufacturers. (Or the decorating industry, which makes money by constantly changing what the “buzz” says is cool.)
Linoleum was very common when I was a child. It’s low-maintenance characteristics were widely seen as a significant plus.
And speaking of what’s being sold as cool, I continue to resist the claim that hardwood floors in kitchens pose no maintenance issues.
When worlds collide …
Jada, is that you?!
It’s low-maintenance characteristics were widely seen as a significant plus.
Meh. Mopping doesn’t get it really clean because the patterns/textures have all sorts of dimples and crevices that collect grime. And it isn’t fully durable as it easily scorched or burned (another tell-tale sign of a house where the residents smoked inside) or cut by sharp objects.
I continue to resist the claim that hardwood floors in kitchens pose no maintenance issues.
Agreed. The kitchen reno that was forced upon us several years ago (trigger warning: “slab leak”) we had porcelain tile installed. Last year we had the flooring redone in the rest of the home — SPC flooring (similar to LVP) and it looks gorgeous.
The Fredom Toove Act looks like it is competitive grants to fund free public transportation. But on a small scale. From the Bill:
Grants shall be used to support (1) implementing a fare-free transit program; and (2) efforts to improve public transportation, particularly in underserved communities, such as costs associated with efforts to provide more safe, frequent, and reliable bus service, including bus stop safety and accessibility improvements, and pedestrian and bike shelters.

It’s difficult to tell what their intent was. On the one hand, absolutely astronomical set and costume budgets, including Jean Paul Gaultier; on the other hand, Chris Tucker and Gary Oldman. And singing blue squid people. It’s a mixed bag. I find it immensely entertaining, but that’s because I quite enjoy Chris Tucker’s unwavering refusal to take any film he’s in seriously.

To be fair, linoleum does wear pretty well; it was everywhere when i was a kid also.
Hardwood is the most beautiful, but definitely the most maintenance, I’m too sloppy to have it in the kitchen.
“I missed that one.”
In fairness, I’m not sure if it’s official party policy, but it’s one of the bees in many of its members’ bonnets after the fiasco over Theresa May’s “deal”.
Anyway… this is supposed to be Ephemera, and given the date (er, yesterday) this seems worth sharing.
“Uh oh … dissent from LGBTQQ+ cult community.”
Er. So did I. (To be fair, between about 1967 and 1976, there were no other colours, until some bright spark rediscovered brown and orange.)
Ditto.
My dad’s first job was as a librarian. In the ’40s.
Okay. You got me there.
As to the rest of it, it’s about time.
I read about the concept of The Backrooms a few days ago, a whole sub-reddit community devoted to inventing (mostly computer-game derived) lore around a creepy picture of unoccupied office space someone uploaded.
While I can do without a lot of the lore (which seems fairly unimaginative and repetitive), someone did make a half-decent short out of the concept – impressively minimalistic, all apparently performed using CGI wizardry. It’s just under 10 minutes. Take a look.
“I had very low opinions about the Academy Awards until I won one, and then I realized how truly distinguished its recipients are.”
Some very juicy animations to catch up on here.
Disney’s Institutional Capture
Disney: just saw a press conference by DeSantis. He said Disney has been neutral for its entire time in florida and has been given special status that no other company has. Disney’s entire huge land holding is virtually unregulated by the state. He said the legislature is giving that a second look. hahahaha get involved in politics, die by politics. Some companies piss off half their audience/customers (NFL, Nike) but you can also wreck yourself with advocacy.
hahahaha get involved in politics, die by politics
Since the government has guns and Disney doesn’t, I’m extremely wary of weaponizing the government to go after my political enemies. After the Obama era, any soi-disant conservative ought to be.
But I’m entirely fine with DeSantis stripping every single special consideration, regulatory exemption, tax break and scrap of corporate welfare from Disney and making them jump through the same hoops every mom & pop grocery store has to.
Also, it’s Disney that’s been behind every push to extend copyright protection periods, from the original 28 years to life-of-the-author-plus-75. All to ensure that Mickey Mouse doesn’t fall into the public domain (have you noticed that you hardly see Mickey at all any more? That’s because Disney knows they’ve pushed it about as far as they can and they’re trying to distance the company from its most iconic mascot).
It would amuse me greatly to see copyright legislation completely overhauled in the US and reduced to something sane again because Disney cowered before its own lunatic employees.
God, we need more Red Bull.
…and the Oscar winner for Worst Histrionics On A “News” Show”…
My understanding is that Florida technically only has carve-outs for “fireworks manufacturers”, of which Disney just happens to be the only one in the state. (Well, they have other carve-outs, but that’s the relevant one in Disney’s case.) If that’s the case, it wouldn’t be too difficult to get rid of a lot of the special consideration without looking like you’re being political.
Marx, himself, ate quite well at the expense of Engels, his wife’s family and mates down the pub.
There is no pattern there, surely.
Not at all.
“have you noticed that you hardly see Mickey at all any more? That’s because Disney knows they’ve pushed it about as far as they can and they’re trying to distance the company from its most iconic mascot”
Could be. They released some surprisingly good new Mickey shorts two or three years ago on YouTube. To my mind, this is as good as anything from the “golden age”. But even those seem to have dried up. The last “full length” one was posted in the summer of 2019. Something to do with the Great Unpleasantness, maybe, but it’s quite the coincidence.
Terrifying thread of note.
“have you noticed that you hardly see Mickey at all any more? That’s because Disney knows they’ve pushed it about as far as they can and they’re trying to distance the company from its most iconic mascot”
How lucrative is Mickey in the toy merchandising side of the business?
To my mind, this is as good as anything from the “golden age”.
That was definitely a fun short. A change in animation style from 50’s Disney to the more exaggerated style of the 2010s that reflects a bit more Ren&Stimpy and/or Animaniacs influence.
pst
Despite my living in the UK I have 3 close relatives who are all “cast members” at WDW. They despair of events but sadly acknowledge that the woke quotient among their workmates is worryingly high.
The mouse remains important but is firmly linked to his well known apparel and can’t be re-imagined in any meaningful sense. This is bad news for Disney merchandisers, they can’t appear to undersell their most potent symbol but he doesn’t actually represent their values any more. On a more practical level they are chucking out an endless stream of princess clothing/toys/collectibles etc while pushing the cost of park admissions (plus extras for queue-jumping) towards what must nearly be breaking point. All is far from well in the self-proclaimed “Happiest place on earth”.
Darleen: there are multiple gov orders I have found online making it illegal to deny “gender affirming care” for youth, but none of them define “youth” and it looks like any age that a child claims to want hormones is ok. This is insane and evil. They claim it is to “prevent harm” but ignore the fact that children don’t have any idea about sex, don’t know that the procedures will make them sterile (ie no children) or that it is irreversible. Most adult gay/lesbian did not know they were gay/lesbian as children, tomboys who grew up to marry and have kids would have been transitioned today, girls who initially think they are boys later settle on being lesbian, etc. Taking the word of a child for what they want is so nuts when we don’t let them own a gun, drive, marry, buy a house, buy alcohol, buy cigs, vote, or anything. My friend’s 4 yr old son wanted to grow up to be a bulldozer–should we help him transition to a robot? Should we help anorexics to lose weight? Should we prescribe emetics to bulimics? This is what a stampede off a cliff looks like.
Thinking further about it the “mickey head and ears” logo has largely replaced the image of the mouse himself and is a suitable outline for every alphabet striped design imaginable.
Incidentally in the numerous pin stalls you can get a “mickey” for pretty much every flag of the world except I don’t recall ever seeing the white one with the blue star. At least old Walt’s best known prejudice is still alive and well.
How lucrative is Mickey in the toy merchandising side of the business?
My only memories of MM himself (mouseself?) being something that had my attention were from the 60’s when I was a pre-schooler. I do recall a Disney themed (Goofy, Mickey, and the gang) promotional book for either the 1964 or 1968 Summer Olympics. And I mostly remember adults making a thing about him so I went along with it. There were the Disney movies of course but not the cartoons so much. And after that, nothing much. Post preschool the cartoons for me and my age set were mostly Bugs Bunny, Flintstones, Bullwinkle. Shortly after we moved to Florida, WDW opened and every kid in Florida had to go or their parents were awful, awful people who didn’t care about them. Taking this back to Mickey and merchandizing, it was my memory that only the preschool set were actual Mickey fans who wore those specific shirts. And I think this was mostly because their parents thought it was cute, along with the beanie cap with the mouse ears from the Mickey Mouse Club (Donald Duck!). It was quite comical back then to see an adult wearing a MM t-shirt. Disney themed stuff, shirts with the big D with mouse ears or such, was considered normal and you always had to have something to “prove” you had been there. But the only post-preschool kids I remember wearing the MM shirts were a few girls and some….mmmm….questionable guys. One friend I had who I recall wore MM t-shirts, a former college roommate, is now a left-left-lefty who is all in on this trans stuff such that he just last week unfriended me (finally, thank God) over the “what is a woman” thing.
but ignore the fact that children don’t have any idea about sex, don’t know that the procedures will make them sterile (ie no children)
What’s insane is that parents who actually say “but it will make them sterile” are attacked as being selfish … “You just want grandchildren, you horrible transphobe!”
And the screen shots of the FB groups where parents swap stories and advice on how to get drugs and surgeries for their kids? And bragging about how YOUNG they can get their kids transistioned?
Holy frijoles — female genital mutilation on girls under 18 is actually against the law (US federal law) but claiming “trans” as the reason for the same thing is OK for 16 y/o (or younger?)
That is nutz.
What a racket
The Mafia protection racket weeps with envy.
