Currently doing the rounds and worth saving for posterity:
Continue to practice social distancing by wearing a mask and by keeping a distance of at least six feet between yourself and people who are not part of your household.
What to do when a thermonuclear device has been detonated nearby.
And because a cake needs icing:
Many people may already feel fear and anxiety about the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). The threat of a nuclear explosion can add additional stress.
Consider this an open thread.
Living in Clown World is a bit stressful too.
“Even as rockets rained down on Ukraine, Western elites worried about how the war would affect LGBTQ people, as if Putin might have developed queer-seeking missiles. Others voiced concern that grandparents huddled in bomb shelters beneath the pockmarked streets of Kiev might not be social distancing. The New York Times lamented that few of the Ukrainians fleeing for their lives were wearing masks… Meanwhile, former US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed dismay at what he called the ‘emissions consequences’ of war in Europe. He would presumably be far more comfortable with the Russian invasion had their tanks first met strict European emission standards. […]
Nothing better illustrates the disconnect between the imaginary world of the West and the cold, hard reality that is right now marching toward Kiev than the fact that, just three weeks before the invasion, British troops were spending a day ‘reflecting on inclusivity’. At the very moment Putin was surrounding Ukraine with rocket launchers, British soldiers were taking a break from tiresome military exercises to discuss ‘unacceptable behaviours’ such as bullying, sexual harassment, and racism.”

I can never remember. During a nuclear attack, is it stop, drop, and roll, or duck and cover?
“Engage virtually with your community through video and phone calls.”
?
I’m ashamed that drivel was brought to us by the U.S. government.
The threat of a nuclear explosion can add additional stress.
Wow.
May cause stress.
Many many moons ago I worked on rugged / Mil Spec computers.
We built an input module whose function was to send a priority interrupt to the CPU when it detected x-rays.
It’s official name was Nuclear Event Detector.
One of the engineers, a man named Finn, was perturbed by this. He installed a “Finn Event Detector” outside his office. It was a sheet of paper folded in half. On the outside was written “open to operate” .
On the inside was written “If you are reading this, there has not been a Nuclear Event”.
Cold War humor…
Another critical unintended consequence. Send prayers.
With Ukraine invaded, liberals keep their priorities straight.
Comrade Arthur of the Ace of Spades blog has been silent for a week. Has he been suspended again? Does he have accounts on any other platforms?
The UN General Assembly’s most likely response to Russia invading Ukraine is to agree on harsh sanctions against Israel.
From the Oz Spectator article.
I remember advice about nukes from years ago. “…put your head between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye”
Yeah keep 6 ft apart in a bomb shelter. Would be funny if it wasn’t so demented.
Yet another horrible white supremacist attack in New York.
But not for long.
Nuclear explosions can cause significant damage and casualties from blast, heat, and radiation but you can keep your family safe by knowing what to do and being prepared if it occurs.
I’m relieved to know that I can keep my family safe by adherence to these recommendations.

Yes.
The word “can” is doing so much heavy lifting (twice!) that it must be a violation of one of the Geneva Conventions.
If a few major cities got hit by nukes in the US, it would destroy the interstate highway and rail systems (which all pass through major cities), so no more transport of goods. We have seen that major disruptions have resulted from minor slowdowns at ports and factories. This would be way worse. Of course I am assuming here a limited war, not 1000 nuke strikes, which is more likely, if there was a war. That putin is threatening nukes shows that he has lost his shit and is the most dangerous man in history.
By the way, this is ALL about oil/gas. Russia’s pipelines mostly go through Ukraine and they have been bickering about that for years. Not only does russia depend on these sales but it also allows them to sort of blackmail europe. A BOGO if you will.
We have seen that major disruptions have resulted from minor slowdowns at ports and factories.
There was an article in I think Omni in the 1970s that claimed the detonation of less than 20 tactical/suitcase nukes would completely destroy US infrastructure, targeting things like electrical grid nodes and transport hubs.
I remain skeptical of airburst EMP – I think like the H-bomb igniting the atmosphere, it’s at best speculation – but a single working EMP device would have much the same effect.
So we rent billboards encircling progressive cities. On each of them we put single titles: Cancer! Global warming! Solar flares! Nuclear war! Pandemic! GMO food! Trans-bashing! Patriarchy! Racism! Capitalism! JK Rowling! Livestock torture! Disinformation! Trump! (We should do that one more than once.)
Progressive heads will explode, and then we can move in and repopulate the areas.
bobby b: no no no!!that is what they live for! without anger and panic they have nothing! They are like the bad-guy in Marvel who absorbs any energy you throw at him.

We should set them up so you can only read them if you’re wearing special sunglasses.

During a nuclear attack, is it stop, drop, and roll, or duck and cover?
It’s “duck and cover”, but if that doesn’t work, you “stop, drop and roll” as you will be on fire.
Daniel,
There’s a huge amount of absolutely nonsensical stuff about EMP out there, such as that one device could be used wipe out all the electronics in an entire country and such. In truth there are very few situation where you’d be better off using your thermonuclear weapon to generate EMP than for the obvious.
David Starkey is holding court.
There’s a huge amount of absolutely nonsensical stuff about EMP out there
Yes, it seems so. I mean, I understand the theory behind how it’s supposed to work but I don’t think it’s ever been done at scale, so it seems like one of those things that sounds good in theory but doesn’t actually work in practice.
Damn. Now I have to see if I can find my old (c.1975) copy of “The Effects of Nuclear Weapons”.
But it’s hard to maintain humor now. Just got off the phone with a couple of Ukrainian expats in California. They have relatives in the war zones. I’ve never heard that shaky voice from them before.
And I have lots of connections to Taiwan, though they mostly say they are just trying to go about their ordinary lives.
I don’t think it’s ever been done at scale
There’s nothing terribly mysterious about it, though exact magnitude may be hard to predict (STARFISH PRIME for instance generated a much larger-than-expected pulse). It’s just that you need to detonate the device in the upper atmosphere, which of course rules out using it for directly causing destruction as in an air- or ground-burst. I think the greatest confusion derives from either not knowing that or, alternately, from not understanding the relative vulnerability of different electrical systems. Suffice to say it could be quite economically damaging if done right, but you’d need a weapon of sufficiently high yield that you’re almost certainly a country that has lots of thermonuclear weapons and can do more damage by using them directly.
There’s also the issue that military equipment, especially of course that associated with strategic nuclear forces, is hardened against EMP (and that’s not even considering SSBNs at sea or forces stationed in other countries), so all you’ll accomplish is doing a great deal of diffuse economic and humanitarian damage to a nation that will probably respond by promptly scraping you and all your people off the face of the Earth.

Any guesses on the ethnicity of the victim?

Is it true the old wives tale that they won’t jump out of the pot if you start them off in cold water on the stove?

Can they treat her distemper while she’s there?
This came up on my Facebook memories from nine years ago. Pretty sure I got it here. I mean, c’mon man! Where else would I have…discovered it? Was blackface controversial nine years ago? Oh well, what goes around comes around. Again.
Laser like focus on the important issues.
FFS, OK, it is Austin where stupidity reigns, big doings; Austin’s Russian House makes ‘important’ decision to drop ‘Russian’ from name in Ukraine support.
Not just any decision, an important one, that will show Putin in much the same way not selling already bought and paid for Russian vodka will hurt him and not at all the liquor stores.

Any organization that talks unironically of “thought leaders” is already in grave trouble, and when the “thought leaders” it welcomes are “diversity, inclusion and equity” maniacs then the only merciful thing to do is euthanize the organization, cleanse its infrastructure with fire, and donate its officers to North Korea to spend their lives in agricultural labor battalions.
AAVMC Can they treat her distemper while she’s there?
It’s not just her. Check out the other two faces: Anthony P Carnevale and Randall Bass are educationists at Georgetown University. That is to say, they are useless people who have devoted their lives to ruining other peoples’ lives.
Laser like focus on the important issues.
Heh. Indeed.
But on a less serious note, I saw this farther down in the comments:
But gold is not sufficient. You need field-normalized, hypobarically manufactured crystal-aligned copper. 😀
There is never an asteroid when you need one, the CROWN Act is real.
Scroll down to the creators of this mess, none of whom have “natural hair” and then scroll to the legislators pushing this vital legislation – only ones with “natural hair” are the dudes and the yte chick.
What discrimination against people with “natural hair”?

euthanize the organization
You forgot “salt the earth”
Impossible to tell if it is parody, but if not, it would really cover all the made up “genders”.
Recent links above emphasize that when you become untethered from reality you can float away to some weird places.
Biden is emphasizing that his build-back program is supported by 35 economists. That’s all he could find to kiss his ring? Not thousands?
I’m so old I remember when Trump send anti-aircraft rockets to Ukraine and the press went nuts (not in favor). And now it is bad that every Ukrainian doesn’t have an AR-15. Can I get the cliff notes version? I’m having trouble keeping up.
Biden is emphasizing that his build-back program is supported by 35 economists.
He has also claimed in various verbal meanderings 14 and 17, so it is a safe bet 35 is just another number pulled from the teleprompter programmer’s fundament.
Do I have a comment stuck in the spam filter? I thought that that was one of those tragic things that only happened to other people.

What I find most amusing about this video is that Pat Kelly used to be the VJ on a local Toronto children’s TV station. There are only twelve actors in Canada.

From the replies:
Oh, that ship has sailed, honey.
Biden has 35 economists in agreement? Wow, that’s some success right there. I was told years ago that no two economists can agree on exactly the same idea. It is by all accounts a dark art full of doubt and fury, so old Joe has pulled a masterstroke there if we can believe him.
Oh, I wouldn’t put too much stock in that: There are plenty of economists available to back up whatever policy you put forward–even a Marxist appropriation of all private property.
