Friday Ephemeraren’t
Still laid low by this damned bug, so this week you’ll be throwing together your own pile of links and oddities in the comments. However, being heroic, I’ll set the ball rolling with a rock-stacking simulator; some near misses; an inopportune twang; someone taking things literally; the thrill of an educator’s pretty nails; and how to tell you’re in San Francisco.
Oh, and I guess this is good to know.
I liked the twist at the end: the skateboarder did not rack his nuts on the handrail. And then was not run over by a car. Win!
Get well soon!
an inopportune twang
Amateur, BB King just puts on a new string.
Mr. Vaughn did the axe swap better.
Oh dear, that’s hanging around a long time. It’s outstayed its welcome even more than Boris Johnson at this point, hasn’t it? Hope you feel better soon.
Console yourself with the thought that as a primate, you’re evolution’s pinnacle…or are you?
the thrill of an educator’s pretty nails
How the hell do this people get hired?
Oh dear, that’s hanging around a long time.
Yep, starting week three now. It’s just a cold and on Tuesday it had all but passed, but it’s reasserted itself. I’m sure I’ll live, but it does make being a scintillating host rather difficult.
How the hell do this people get hired?
Well, you have wonder if the parents are equally entertained by Mr Morris encouraging second-grade boys to paint their nails, or by the entire class having to write stories about Mr Morris and his nail-painting adventures. He and his nails being so fabulous, you see, and in no way narcissistic.
As noted before, many times, the hashtags #tiktokteacher and #teachersoftiktok are quite revealing, though perhaps not in ways one might wish.
*these* people
Fat fingers. Small phone.
Yep, starting week three now.
Very sorry to hear that, David.
How the hell do this people get hired?
How do they not get fired?
Very sorry to hear that, David.
It’s just annoying. It, and the medications to suppress the symptoms, make you feel a bit distant and thick-headed. So an enthusiasm for parsing woke idiocy is hard to muster.

Know Overdose
Nice shot/chaser from SF, the petri dish of liberal government policy failure at every level.
Now they’re glamorizing heroin parties. “Be sure to have a designated Narcan®-injector at your next gathering!” is quite the message.
P.S. Feel better, David! Nothing more annoying than a drag-out cold/flu/crud of any kind.

I’m not at death’s door, you understand, but being sniffly and thick-headed gets boring quite quickly.
I’m not at death’s door, you understand…
Good to hear. I’ve been dragging around with seasonal allergies for a few weeks, so I truly empathize.
Nothing worse than a crud that won’t go away. I’ve had this tired, achy, drug-out crud that’s been bothering me for about ten years now. Doctor tells me it’s called ‘getting old’, but that little whippersnapper’s only been a doctor about 30 years so I don’t trust he knows what he’s talking about.
Durham University
Students at Durham University are calling out the unacceptable behaviour shown by some male students against female students and the need for everyone to challenge it where they ‘see it and hear it’ [ … ] “We are really pleased that the students have taken this step to shout out the toxic behaviour that supports sexual violence against women.”
Also Durham University:
Durham University offers students training lessons via Zoom on how to be prostitutes [ … ] ‘an interactive course that explores the challenges student sex workers can face’
Uh … wut?
Durham University…
So, any form of sexual degradation, even inapt jokes, is “toxic” and must be stamped out immediately and everywhere on campus, but students are simultaneously encouraged to engage in whoring, an activity in which sexual degradation of a serious kind is all but guaranteed. Good to know.

I’m still wondering why January is left out – maybe a month of rest.

As sk60 said in the comments to that, “I denounce your paedophobia.”
I am sure it was sarcastic, but you know it is coming.
…it’s important to use terminology for groups that members of that group want others to use for them…
As if paedophiles couldn’t possibly have untoward motives for living in a world of euphemism and practised evasion. (See link above.)

Ugh. I’m sorry, David. I once suffered a similar low-grade illness, and remember the frustration of being too sick to have any fun, but not sick enough to warrant a day on the sofa watching bad television. ‘Twas just day after day of going through the routine without feeling like I was really there.
In many ways, it’s like winter in Pennsylvania. The temperature is plus or minus a few degrees of freezing for months on end, so it’s too cold to enjoy any regular outdoor activities, but not cold enough to enjoy any winter activities like skating or skiing or snowball fights. Just ten or twelve weeks of cold muddy slush punctuated with a few wet snowfalls.
Get well soon!
someone taking things literally
A programmer is wrapping up his work for the day when his wife calls and says, “Honey, I need you to stop by the store on your way home and pick up a gallon of milk. And if the store has eggs in stock, pick up a dozen.”
Half an hour later, he walks into the kitchen with twelve gallons of milk.
Seems an apt time to dig this out of the archives.
It conjures up a scene of Victorian public school masters sublimating their erotic feelings into intense physicality on the playing field, heartfelt recitations of certain passages of Greek poetry, and cold baths after administering corporal punishment.
The conventional morality of the past century (among those with intellectual pretensions) and the past half century (in popular culture) is that sexual feelings that aren’t acted out create repressions and complexes which lead to worse things than the acting out of the original urges. The culture has cued us to know the Victorian schoolmaster better than he knows himself – all this muscular Christianity and Higher Purpose, but in reality we all know that he was molesting the boys, wasn’t he?
Sixty years into the sexual revolution they now propose that putting pedophiles next to children without touching them releases a sublimated energy that’s a societal good. This is at pitch of Higher Purpose that even our cartoon Victorians wouldn’t have attempted. And all done in the open with no judgement, and therefore no pressure on the pedophile to assimilate to norms or to sublimate anything.
Indeed, the hypocrisy might be a feature and not a bug: a truce that can be denounced later once they’ve marched through the institutions.
It’s a bit like how in the domain of immigration, expecting outsiders to assimilate to majority norms is too much to ask – a denial of their selfhood. So the historic majority population is expected to live alongside immigrants who express their intention to keep their identity and traditions and their hostility to the traditions of the host country. And all of it under a managerialist regime that pretends that it doesn’t matter how the minority expresses its bad intentions to the majority as long as they don’t act it out, that it matters a lot how the majority expresses their bad intentions because the minority is vulnerable, and that any acting out (that might surprisingly take place) must be dealt with without being seen to take sides between the majority and minority views.
“[I]t’s too cold to enjoy any regular outdoor activities, but not cold enough to enjoy any winter activities like skating or skiing or snowball fights. Just ten or twelve weeks of cold muddy slush punctuated with a few wet snowfalls.”
Sounds familiar. I went to an independent school that took in kids from miles around. It used to be a source of endless frustration to me when my friends would arrive from the countryside with stories of two feet of snow. Curse you, urban heat island!
“Half an hour later, he walks into the kitchen with twelve gallons of milk.”
Sounds like a few text adventures I played back in the ’80s.
Anyway… album of note.

The Los Angeles Police Department would like your cooperation and compliance …
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) tweeted a release Tuesday advising city residents to “cooperate and comply” when being robbed.
Today’s word is gallows. And start with the officials who are happy for you to be robbed.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) tweeted a release Tuesday advising city residents to “cooperate and comply” when being robbed.
The LAPD tweet did go on to ask that victims be “good witnesses”. But that ignores the fact that in LA criminals often serve little or no prison time.
It’s time to recognize that “progressives” are not human beings. T are enemies of humanity.
Why do I have to cooperate and comply with the criminals? Why can’t they cooperate and comply with the law?
Why do I have to cooperate and comply with the criminals?
That might be prudent advice (“don’t do something that might get yourself killed”) but I would prefer “cooperate and comply when prudent, but shoot when you can”. But I don’t think the police are allowed to say that nowadays.
I didn’t realise you could view individual posts without signing up
I can’t.

“Gay Uncle Day”?
Perhaps that should be the day when fathers have, um, “quiet talks” with that gay uncle who seems to be perhaps a little too friendly with little Timmy.
Blackadder is back from his banning?
I’ve crossed some line with the italics but not sure how to rectify going forward.
I’ve crossed some line with the italics but not sure how to rectify going forward.
Heh. Just check you’ve closed the italics tags. Hereabouts, italics overflows are a grave offence. (You open the italics tag as you did above – chevron bracket, lower-case ‘i’, close chevron bracket – but when the italics are supposed to stop, you have to close the tag. I.e., chevron bracket, slash, lower-case ‘i’, close chevron bracket. Otherwise, everything that follows the open tag will be italicised too, including subsequent comments.)

Right, I’m retiring to my sickbed to watch another episode of Midnight Mass. Play nicely. Use coasters.
David,
Got it, thanks.
Your self-control is truly appreciated.

Speaking of which, London street scenes. No, England is not suffering from cultural rot, you hater you.
Why do I have to cooperate and comply with the criminals?
It really p****s me off when police engage in these “lock it or lose it” campaigns. Of course we all know to lock our doors but people do forget. That doesn’t excuse the criminal nor alleviate the problem. I got a community mailer once where the police community relations section told us that we needed to close our garage doors when working in our backyards even in broad daylight as if we, the citizens, were being negligent. I called the police to question this pointing out that the problem, in this case as I had heard from neighbors, was with teenagers doing the stealing. I pointed out that putting such a thing in a community mailer that teenagers were likely to see themselves and, knowing the “teen logic” of even some of the best of them, such an article was very irresponsible. Ooh, was I wrong…”wrong”. The (woman) police relations officer with whom I was speaking really laid into me. I tried to raise the concern in a calm, professional way (no, really) but she escalated into shouting at me. Eventually another (male) officer, whom I presume overheard, took the phone and we had a civil conversation. Of course in their view I was still wrong and needed to shut up an go away. But at least it was civil.
Preview is your friend
Though ironically not when trying to fix it without David’s help. The overflow can be fixed by putting up another comment post with the closing brackets that David describes above but pressing “Preview” will still show the italics cascading. You need to double check your closing brackets, say a little prayer to whatever god you worship, cross the index and middle fingers on your LEFT hand, then press post and immediately close your eyes. Count to 7 1/4, hit your browser’s reset button, and all should be good. Oh, yeah…open your eyes again after counting. Don’t forget that part. But basically, faith is the key.
Chicago’s famous Museum of Science and Industry now claims that black people built the pyramids of Egypt: “From ancient Egyptian pyramids to modern skyscrapers, learn about Black architects…”
Found via here. The museum was already going woke in the 90’s. Haven’t given them a penny.
WTP: Riffing on some of your comments, I’ll mention that my fake conservative friends could not see what was so terribly wrong with a museum telling “woke” lies. They could not condemn it, much less do anything crazy like refrain from giving the museum money.
Though ironically not when trying to fix it without David’s help.
I’ve toyed with the idea of typing up some basic HTML help for David to post at the top of his categories. Speaking of which, how do you use include an angle bracket character in a post or comment so that it is interpreted as text rather than html?
pst314: Use “<” and “>” for your open and close. Like this: <>
Devilbunny: Thank you very much.
Thus: This looks like a hyperlink but isn’t: <a href=”foo”>text</a>
Next question: If I ever get around to writing this up, what should I include? Off the top of my head, the most common issues are:
– basic hyperlink
– how to embed an image
– how to use italics, underline, bold
– how to fix unclosed italics
– how to indent text for block quotes, lists, etc
– how to remove hamster urine
I’ve toyed with the idea of typing up some basic HTML help for David to post at the top of his categories.
That would be nice, especially for someone like me who still cannot figure out how to name a link from youtube, or anywhere else for that matter.
Dan C: there are lots of web pages that will tell you how to do these basic things, but it kind of helps if you already know what terms to search for and in addition already know a little bit about html. Starting from scratch is hard.
There was a brief period where upper nile Nubian (black) groups ruled egypt, and in the upper nile area they did build small pyramids, but the big ones were all built by mediterranean type peoples. And Cleopatra was greek, a descendant of Ptolomy (sp?), one of Alexander’s generals. For hundreds of years Alexandria was a greek city. Making up lies about africa is a habit for the woke, shamelessly indulged in.
Making up lies about africa is a habit for the woke, shamelessly indulged in.
A standard claim is that black pride requires these lies (which are not admitted to be lies.) But that leads to the matter of Egyptian pride: Are not the Mediterranean peoples of Egypt* etc entitled to pride in the actual accomplishments of their very real ancestors? The racist contempt that “woke” liberals and black radicals display undermines any claim that might have to our respect and tolerance.
* The same applies with regard to black attempts to appropriate the intellectual accomplishments of the ancient Greeks.
A standard claim is that black pride requires these lies
No one is entitled to a moral “atta boy” because he shares skin color with a genius. I mean, I hardly share in the achievements of Madison, Washington, or Adams because, like me, they are white. I do however share in it to the extent that I understand what they did, am profoundly grateful for it, and speak up to defend it.
But, as Glenn Reynolds would ask, where’s the graft in that?
I hardly share in the achievements of Madison, Washington, or Adams because, like me, they are white.
Vanilla Ice asks, “What am I? Chopped liver?”
On another note, The Outsiders is a pretty lame movie. I long suspected as much, based on what was said about it, by whom, of what sex, at what age, how these things were said, etc. etc. etc. Still it would have been nice if someone had told me.
Re San Francisco (and pace Burnsie), I am seeing with increasing frequency pretty dire warnings about imminent shortages of medicines and medical supplies (half of which are apparently steaming aimlessly around Los Angeles Harbor awaiting the offloading that may never come if Miss Petey is left in charge) and half of which have never actually been manufactured, due to China’s current domestic issues. I have raged for years over the insanity of sourcing >60% of our vital drug supply with an openly hostile power, and won’t get into that again, promise… just wondering, if 60% of the Narcan supply goes bye-bye can we anticipate a commensurate drop in the prone-to-overdosing addict population? Or will the local meth cookers perceive a whole new area for expansion and fire up their chemistry sets for the bold Nalaxone horizon?
Right, I’m retiring to my sickbed to watch another episode of Midnight Mass.
Is it worth watching then?
Is it worth watching then?
Well, I’m on episode 5 (of 7) and it’s been engaging, sometimes surprising, even darkly funny. Catholicism features prominently and I thought it might rely too heavily on religion-bashing, which would be a bit hackneyed and tedious. There are some elements of creepy zeal – done well, I think – but there are also scenes of people doing good things because of their faith, and people being lost without it. It’s not mocking. There’s a confrontation between a wheelchair-bound girl, now restored by seemingly miraculous means, and the burly drunk who crippled her. The exchange is dramatically rather potent and, again, surprising.
I just hope they nail the landing.
Characters not calling “the creature” what it really seems to be (in supernatural lore, at least) was an interesting bit.
Hymenopteran WTF
Characters not calling “the creature” what it really seems to be…
Yes, the ‘angel’. But no spoilers. I’ve two more episodes to go.
Well that escalated quickly
No one is entitled to a moral “atta boy” because he shares skin color with a genius.
People who have accomplished nothing to be proud of may desperately seek “reasons” to be proud. I remember young kids from poor ghetto families who told outrageous lies about their rich daddies, a few who embraced bizarre Nation of Islam fantasies.
That does not excuse such lies, but it does give a psychological explanation.
Characters not calling “the creature” what it really seems to be…
For a moment I thought that must be in regard to the the damaged minds that are the frequent topic of this blog.
I am seeing with increasing frequency pretty dire warnings about imminent shortages of medicines and medical supplies

I think claims about pyramids being black (etc) are not about getting credit, but about proof of ability of a race. Blacks built pyramids therefore they are capable. It is still false, but makes more sense.
@pst314
Is FullFact a solidly reliable fact-checker?
I really don’t know. They contract fact-check for Facebook and Google, so may be questionable. I was more intruiged (on behalf of a friend) by the mechanics of how anyone might lawfully go about checking the virility of young boys than the credibility of the organisation.
asiaseen:
I really don’t know.
Thanks. I keep hoping to find reliable fact checkers, ever since Snopes went all Pravda.
The question is, who is checking young boys for infertility and how?
The only way that should not set off alarm bells would be statistics on the fertility of men who were exposed to the chemical as young boys.
how anyone might lawfully go about checking the virility of young boys
Virility ≠ fertility. 😉 I’m confident that nobody is lawfully checking the virility of young boys. But remember the scandalous revelation that Alfred Kinsey was making heavy use of interviews with child molesters in compiling his reports on what he claimed to be normal behavior. 😮
Life in woke Chicago: 1:17pm, Nov 12: PD and FD Scanner: “2 males running south on DuSable Lake Shore drive 1000 N (Michigan Ave) ‘pointing gun at drivers and running them off the road’ CPD now has them in custody…”
