Why the different terms?

By and large they’re from comfortable, middle-class backgrounds, cossetted and indoctrinated at statusful institutions, at considerable expense, and they often have quite serious personality disorders. They’re dysfunctional and degenerate, yes, perhaps irretrievably; but they ain’t downtrodden.
What they want, very much, is to down-tread you.

That these little turds exist is not a new development. What feels new is that the media are defending them so ardently and with so little breaking of ranks. (To say nothing of all the idiot sport teams – I hope Americans have the self-respect to vote with their wallets).
When we had riots in the UK nearly a decade ago, the media and especially the BBC tried defining them as protests about the petty criminal the police shot. Then the grown-ups seemed to take over and the riots and looting were described as what they were.
I don’t know that that would happen today. Someone like Laurie Penny described the people who turned up to clean up their shattered neighbourhoods voluntarily as “fascists”. At the time she seemed isolated and foolish.Most journalists are now Laurie Penny, though.

If I didn’t know better, I might believe that the protestor’s tactics at the Courthouse are designed to provoke a lethal reaction from a Federal officer. I don’t think they really want to destroy the Courthouse. They want to harass its defenders into a rash reaction in a moment of anger. The propaganda value of a dead Antifan “innocent peaceful protestor” far outshines images of a burning courthouse.

OT: The shooting of the judge’s family (the judge recently assigned to the Deutche Bank Epstein case) has slipped into the memory hole. One would think a vocal MRA lawyer murderer would be juicy clickbait for the fear mongers, especially since the “facts” fit the desired narrative so well. Old (72) white guy whose activism has provided a wealth of “misogynist” rants that would launch 1000 thinkpieces on “Trump’s America” etc? That’s easy money for the MSM, no?

In situations like the one above, the victim, the target, has no way of knowing whether the mob surrounding them, harassing them, menacing them, and gleefully breaking the law, is merely a bunch of unspanked narcissists, or includes actual sociopaths intent on mortal harm. Or whether one may blur into the other at very little notice. To not strongly entertain the latter possibility, and act accordingly, seems foolish, to say the least.

In a similar vein, I’ve been enjoying Sleepy Hollow but as a Canadian I am completely lost in many of the Revolutionary War references. Can one of our American posters recommend a decent one-volume history of the period, preferably one not tainted by wokeness? Note that I minored in Classical Studies and I read things like Gibbons’ unabridged Decline and Fall for fun, so length and depth are not impediments.
