Friday Ephemera
Today’s word is multitasking. A story unfolds. || Shocking scenes of Canadian road rage. || Redundant words. || CIA-issue rectal tool kit. For when you need to discreetly stash those tiny saws and drills. || Calligraphy with drill. || Crash heard, culprit detected. || Tone-deafness test. || Pop stars and their younger selves. || Ceaseless vigilance. || Don’t try this at home. || A drink and a show, in one. || Why women are often nesh. || This is one of these. || A Scandal in Bohemia. Starring Jeremy Brett. || When butterflies attack. || Making chains. || Maximum wife points. || You want one and you know it. || Local woman rendered in yarn. || Swell jelly. || Festive scenes. | Feel-good footage. || Or nearest offer.
The rectal tool kit would have been better immediately after the multitasking one.
I have to go get mental bleach now.
Ceaseless vigilance.
I always wondered what happened to Hammy Hamster.
Tales of the Riverbank

Redundant words.
Yeah, if you are pedantic and not educated about, not even vaguely familiar, or never even heard in passing about things on a broad spectrum of topics.
added bonus Bonus number 2, in addition to bonus number 1, a bonus to the bonus, extra bonus;
advance planning planning one does before planning the ultimate plan, see also tentative of contingency plan;
advance warning We expect a Taliban attack today=advance warning; They are 5 klicks out=warning; They are in the wire=Oh Shit ! warning;
direct confrontation=shooting war, indirect confrontation=trade war;
disappear from sight Yeah, Dr. Pedanto, it does’t always mean literally from sight. “The difference between the left’s positions and insanity is rapidly disappearing.”
end product as opposed to byproducts;
end result the last in a series of results;
fall down fall sideways, as some books recently did when the too light bookend fell over on the shelf causing a couple to fall down off the shelf;
Ditto “complete range,” “broad spectrum,” “The dealer, not selling trucks, did not sell the complete range of Ford products, but only the passenger vehicle range.” The visible spectrum is a narrow spectrum of the entire broad electromagnetic spectrum;
future plans as opposed to the plan(s) you are presently executing;
lesbian woman We all have learned from these learned pages of lesbian men by now, this clown is not Woke;
personal opinion as opposed to the NPC opinion.
My personal opinion is that his personal opinion on these words isn’t worth the shot and powder.
Redundant words.
“I’ve just been on a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. I’ll tell you what, never again.”
Pop stars and their younger selves.
Lost grandmother and her friend, please help.
A Scandal in Bohemia. Starring Jeremy Brett.
“To Professor Moriarty she was always That Bitch“
A Study In Emerald.
Morning, all.
Ahem
Heh. Truly, I am fearsome and glorious. But that’s way too much vagina for my taste.
Yeah, if you are pedantic… or never even heard in passing about things on a broad spectrum of topics.

I think I may have to save that one.
Redundant words: safe haven
Tim Newman on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Here too.
I am truly surprised the Canadian road rage link didn’t go to this.
Disclaimer: am Canadian.
Tim Newman on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
The reason being that one did. Regardless, some people are almost literally taking the piss out of Miss Dyslexia Pistachio-Carmax’s “deal”.
Cultural appropriation problem sorted.
Ahem:
If she insists on showing off the carpet, the least she can do is style it like she did the drapes.
Ahem:
Lady, put that thing away. You’re scaring the children.
Sir:
Having clicked on the multitasking link, where do I go to collect my credit note?
Um…. pictures 42-48 (until someone gets wise and takes them down)

Someone must have gotten wise. There are only 39 pictures. What’s in the box?

Screenshots over at Ace’s place.

Oh my! In the suburbs no one can hear you scream.
I would love to ask the Realtor what they were thinking when they put those photos up: “Only interested buyers would want to look at this. Why would anyone else care?”
I notice, too, that the “50 shades of Maple Glen” has been edited out of the description.
Heh.
Also the bolded phrase is edited out of the full description — “Full finished walk-out basement w bilco doors, includes a gym or 5th bedroom and also is a private adult sexual oasis.”
House is being sold furnished.
Ahem.
House is being sold furnished.
Don’t ask, don’t tell.
It was also an Air B&B. Oh if those old walls could talk…they’d probably ask for a forensic cleaning team.
It was also an Air B&B.
Ah! I just double-checked the original full description to find this excised from the current one:
Heh – always gotta check the comps.
Strictly speaking, ABM missile (anti-ballistic missile missile) is not redundant, as ABM means anti-(ballistic missile), not (anti-ballistic) missile.
ABM (in terms of the ABM Treaty) covers anything that can defeat an ICBM/SLBM, not only using other smaller guided missiles, but hyper-velocity projectiles (railguns) and beam weapons (lasers).
All the above were proposed as part of Reagan’s “Star Wars” Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), one proposal was “Brilliant Pebbles” which had orbital one-shot launch platforms firing high speed tungsten projectiles, this was ABM, but it was not a (guided) missile.
Finally, another brighter light shines in the long dark midnight of oppression, surely to land another telling blow to smash the patriarchy.
Strictly speaking,
Out-pedanting a pedant is the sweetest plum of all.
(TL;DR: click the emboldened link)
It is a truth not-yet-univetsally-enough acknowledged that pretty much any article in the NYT about the UK will be utter cobblers. (Links to the Speccie’s takedowns of the pieces that stick out in my mind because I can’t be arsed to dig up the howls of derision Twitter.)
This week the Gray(sic) Lady published a piece deriding British feminists en masse not being totally on board with the idea that all it takes for a person to be a woman is to say that they are. This got a fair kicking for suggesting white British feminists don’t pay enough attention to “indigenous feminists”, but what really makes the kerfuffle worthy of note is the phrase from the piece’s author’s other published work highlighted here.
You may care to scroll up the Twitter thread to see link to a thorough fisking of the NYT article; I suspect many here will not agree with all the fisking’s author’s positions, but by heck it’s thorough filleting of its target.
Perhaps if fewer Canadians were playing hockey in the streets there’d be fewer traffic jams, eh?
Seriously though, for me the highlight of the video was the lady presenter entirely failing to recognise her chap colleague’s film reference at the end.
In today’s exciting installment of “Things That Are Too White And Male”, in the crosshairs* we find the cover of Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Haworth should have known better that Marlene Dietrich, Diana Dors, and Shirley Temple are women and were “nominated”, but hit the link for the new woke cover.
Meanwhile, shamelessly stolen from Ace, we find a bonus, an interview with the sex dungeon house realtor and, as an added bonus, a link to her website with all the photos, and as an extra added bonus, all the original text.
*In case Dr. Pedanto shows up, yes we know the proper term is “reticle”, now bugger off)
@muldoon: Quite right on ‘added bonus’. It was a bonus to find the original interesting article and an added bonus to find someone who agrees that there can be more than one bonus arising from some thing or event.
LoL:
“The hammer attack on Karl Marx’s tomb shows the alt-right fears his time has come …”
“The hammer attack on Karl Marx’s tomb shows the alt-right fears his time has come …”
“The hammer attack on Karl Marx’s tomb shows the alt-right fears his time has come … As every racist movement knows, the ideals Marx fought for are achievable in this century.”
The eternal slur that those who oppose Marxist tyranny are racists.
The eternal slur that those who oppose Marxist tyranny are racists.
The eternal idiocy of believing that Marx’s sadistic fever dreams are a basis for utopia.
You know, the salacious stuff about “revolutionary terror,” the “murderous death agonies of the old society” and the “complete extirpation” of “reactionary peoples”
Dickinson College Student Newspaper: ‘Should White Boys Still Be Allowed to Talk?’ We joke about these people being crazies, but if they had power they would be sending “White Boys” off to the gulags for extermination in the name of their ideology. What kind of evil do you have to have in your heart to cling to marxism while wearing your jacobin clothes.
What kind of evil do you have to have in your heart to cling to marxism while wearing your jacobin clothes.
I always imagine it’s the resentment of the mediocre, who want power over others but know that no-one would ever actually vote for them or their policies.
All the above were proposed…
Don’t forget the sweet-ass particle beam weapon that was pitched, though never went into development.
Redundant words: nape of the neck
Redundant words: nape of the neck
Not always, a nape is also a piercing in the nape, so there is a large and likely painful difference between grabbing someone by the nape of the neck and by the nape in the neck. Nape is also slang for napalm, which is a whole other level of pain in the neck, or on the neck, and you certainly don’t want to grab it.
Damnit wrong key again…
Also, being an anatomical pedant as I am, nape of the neck refers only to the back (dorsal) to the neck, which, as it is a 3D object, also has a front (ventral) and sides (lateral), as much as a generally cylindrical object has sides.
as much as a generally cylindrical object has sides
…or orientation.
…or orientation.
True enough, unless it is attached to something that defines its front, sides, and back.
…or orientation.
No, you have to ask it what its orientation is.
No, you have to ask it what its orientation is.
Good point, a neck could identify as a coccyx.
Good point, a neck could identify as a coccyx.
LOL squared and cubed.
David, I’m paying for Farnsworth’s drinks tonight.
no-one would ever actually vote for them or their policies.
Jeremy Corbyn, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bernie Sanders, et al. agree.
