Apparently, we live in post-satirical times:
According to [Rochester City Court Judge, Leticia] Astacio, the raise was deserved and the media are “biased” in their reporting on her because they are “racist.” “Why’s my name in the headlines?” she asked via Facebook. “You’re mad because I’m a young minority getting paid.”
While poking through the news coverage, readers may entertain other, perhaps more obvious reasons for interest in Ms Astacio’s career and taxpayer-funded compensation, as when the words “parole violations” and “alcohol ankle monitor” make an appearance. And do watch Ms Astacio’s Facebook video, in which she mentions, at some length, how “inspirational” she is to those less statusful than herself, while applying generous amounts of lip balm, before asking her critics, “What makes you feel so entitled?”
F*cking hell.
How did she *get* the job in the first place?
And note the line, “None of you should even know whether I go to work.” I.e., for months at a time, on account of being drunk and repeatedly violating probation, or being investigated for misconduct, or being in jail, etc.
Because she’s “all about our community.”
It’s unreasonable to expect her to work though, because that would be forcing her to appropriate white culture.
And there’s the anecdote, presented as an excuse, regarding a judge who, we’re told, was too obese to get to work and still got paid her full salary, for four years. That this is supposed to make everything okay does, I think, reveal something about the mindset.

For some unknown reason I am reminded of the line from and unnamed Officer Efficiency Report:
I get the impression, quite strongly, that Ms Astacio isn’t naturally inclined to reflect on her own behaviour in a remotely critical way. On top of which, she has what is for some a ready-made excuse for any professional shortcomings, one that she’s apparently quite willing to use, thereby making the prospect of self-awareness even more remote.
I do appreciate the malicious joy she takes in her own uselessness. So many of the middle-class black Americans featured on these pages just moan, rather than sit back and enjoy the benefits of inhabiting a protected class. An easy route to university and then – even if you don’t make it in something as tough as the law (she must have done some work at some point surely?) – the warm arms of the state offer many many highly-paid opportunities to skive.
Not that we need the reminder, but New York is controlled by Democrats who believe the taxpayers exist to fund politicians’ sinecures and should otherwise just shut up about things like showing up for work or avoiding criminal prosecution.

It was making crazy screeching noises then there was a big clunk that sounded like something fell out. The check engine light started flashing.. Thenstarted smoking and slowing down until I pulled over, turned it off and called somebody to come get me

I suppose you have to marvel at a judge, a supposed figure of rectitude and public trust, who routinely blames others for her own irresponsibility and criminal behaviour, and who openly and repeatedly disdains the terms of her own probation and the law in general.

While watching all the hair zhuzhing and lip-balm applying, and listening to the endless likes, I was struck by how much she sounds like a self-involved teenager, rather than, say, a figure of gravitas, sobriety and acute legal discernment.

Well, exactly. As I was relating this to my wife, this person went through 12 years of (likely) public education, 4 years of (likely) public university, and a couple more years of law school. Moved along the way, etc. etc. etc. Many, many people came in contact with her without sufficiently challenging her. Must have had some experience in a law firm to become a judge (maybe I’m wrong), and gets chosen by the party to represent them, and then gets elected. She makes over $175K a year. And then she gets a raise. A rising star…and we paid for it. Especially those in NY/Rochester/etc.
I really have a hard time putting too much blame on these specific people. They are only the problem because soooooo many others enabled them. Note, I am not excusing the end result but if there is 100 pounds of problem here, I place 75 pounds of it at the feet of the numerous enablers. And a pound or two belong to us schmucks who paid the bills along the way.

You have to understand that judicial appointments/elections are ultimately political in this country. It has very little to do with merit or qualifications. Perhaps in the past, yes. Not any longer.
And I will stop here, so that my license is not in peril.
If she was a bit more sadistic with more baggage she could be a contender.

It’s called Affirmative Action. She ticked at least 2 boxes, the main box being the color one.
It would be racist to flunk her out of high school, so she graduates.
The university to which she was accepted may have been quite a bit short of that color and were probably overjoyed she applied just so they could tick that box and continue getting their funding from the federal government.
Once in, like WTP described, she passes every class because to fail her would be racist, no?
And for the judge job, it probably only required a law degree, and the rest was a political process as R. Sherman said.

When she was 17 years old, Astacio, then single, gave birth to a daughter.
That’s the leadoff of the Astacio section of the coverage of the Democratic primary election which she won in 2014.
The daughter of parents who held multiple jobs, ranging from her mom’s postal work to her dad’s roofing jobs, Astacio was insistent that she would be a role model for her child.
Sigh.
She worked her way through Monroe Community College and the University of Buffalo, where she received a master’s in social work and her law degree.
After school, she joined Monroe County Legal Assistance Center, helping low-income residents needing legal representation with civil issues, such as a denial of public services. She found a niche there, she said, because she could relate to some of the clientele who were trying to keep themselves afloat.
I’ll bet.
“I was always interested in being in close proximity to people who are similar to me,” she said.

But the crunch of student loans, and the fact that her job was grant funded, prompted her to look for something with a more reliable income.

The politics of “racial justice” have grossly distorted education and employment:
Children who have not learned anything are nonetheless given passing grades in class and are allowed to graduate from grade school and high school. Colleges and universities water down their admission standards in order to accept kids who are unprepared and unqualified. Then they demand that professors water down their grading standards so that these kids pass with acceptable marks. Going further, they create courses and entire departments in which academic excellence is irrelevant. Eventually these kids graduate with impressive degrees, and enter the working world where you would think they would finally run up against cruel reality. But no: corporations, under pressure from government lawyers and extortionist “social justice” advocacy groups create places for these unqualified and underqualified people…

I’d warrant the only kind of institutes of a non-penal nature she’s worthy of admittance to are the involuntary Baker Act kind.
