Friday Ephemera
This is one of these. // Attention, all fashion-conscious gentlemen. (h/t, Julia) // Why people get dashcams. // Where cash is (nearly) obsolete. // Students on socialism. // Lab-grown capillaries. // Lesbians, 1965. // Lauv. // On colour in film. // Fish farms, from above. // Seen from below. (h/t, Damian) // A brief history of cellophane. // Deconstructed cow. // An archive of vintage Galaxy magazines. // And one of Amazing Stories. // Tag is a pro sport. // Something error happen. // “Maintenance on this track has been deferred for a long time.” // “When she was seen two weeks after… her eyes felt a lot more comfortable.” // Chopsticks of note. // Two for the price of one. // I do like the planes. // And finally, via Elephants Gerald and probably best with subtitles, Song of Bolo.
“I wish to be judged as a human being and not as a lesbian”
THIS!!
I’d be glad to, if only today’s BLTQWERTYGXZ crowd would freakin’ let me!
Deconstructed cow.
Meat.
Also contains sheep.
Something error happen.
Ehn, so Cerberus got out one day . . .
Absolutely randomly I clicked an issue of Amazing Stories and found on page six an advert for a book called “Modern Eugenics.” PDF here: https://ia801609.us.archive.org/29/items/Amazing_Stories_v06n10_1932-01/Amazing_Stories_v06n10_1932-01.pdf
Being published in 1932, the word “eugenics” hadn’t picked up its dystopian connotations.
Interesting.
I see Bill Nye with the assistance of Rachel Bloom has been nominated for an Emmy for their ‘Sex Junk’ work which I believe you brought uncritically to our attention Mr Thompson.

If I still worked for a boss, I would have had to send in a note about being forced to be out of work for the next week or two due to a bad case of the Creeping Crud.
(While I peruse old Galaxy and Amazing mags, by flashlight, under my bedcovers, WELL after bedtime.)
Good god. They have Analog as well.
Boss? That’s gonna be THREE weeks.

Students on socialism.
Like ‘students on drugs’?

But gosh, it was so darn science-y.
Though it occurs to me that the alleged gender and sexuality “spectrums” are perhaps better described as bimodal distributions. In that, almost everyone is straight and happily male or female. A few people are gay or bisexual, and very occasionally there’s a developmental anomaly, a copying error, that leads to transgenderism. The distribution of the “spectrum” is quite important.
Like ‘students on drugs’?
Heh. Much more harmful, I should think.
Remember professional educator Naima Lowe, the Evergreen State College instructor of “video and performance art,” the one who claims expertise in “emphatically poetic gestures”?
Well. She’s still not a happy madam.
I believe Jordan Peterson also describes gender as an attenuated bimodal distribution.
Remember professional educator Naima Lowe,
Black racism doesn’t count.
#Progress
Black racism doesn’t count.
Encouraging arson too, it seems. Still, it’s interesting how an institution famed far and wide for its low academic standards can rapidly abandon any standards at all.
@Pogonip re: the ‘do you remember’ link.
Yowsah, I remember almost all of those things, some of them with more fondness than they probably deserve to be honest.
We had one of those rocket-shaped Hoovers with the chrome sled-like runners; best darn vacuum ever.
Mother Nature is a harsh mistress
Lesbians, 1965.
Two sexes – golly, zem sure weren’t woke back in 1965.

And the interviewee just wanted to be treated like a human being! Imagine that. I’m literally shaking.
I’m literally shaking.
I know. It’s a radical proposition.
NV goes well with these: http://www.jazz-age.com/images/swanclothing_sock_garters/il_fullxfull.97043085.jpg or jump right to these: http://www.realmenrealstyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Shirt-Garters.jpg A defacto requirement for acheiving a “professional military image” at Officer Training.

I think the jockeys and cyclist as well as other parts would be excellent fodder for GIF-making. GIFs of the “nothing to see here”, “I do what I want”, etc. general sort.
Curses – wrong brackets out of force of habit from Ace’s. At least they’re a nicely matched malformed set and not a runaway.

“On colour in film.”
I thought that might turn out to be this. (Featuring bonus side-mullet. Well, what would you call it?)
“golly, zem sure weren’t woke back in 1965.”
Or even 2012.

So I take it the Henchlesbians polished off that case of T-bird before sunrise. I suppose it’s too much to expect a moderation of the appetites these days. Or was there an epic oil spill on the driveway?
The question on everyone’s lips. 🙂

Let’s never speak of that again.
Just got back from a matinee of Dunkirk. Extraordinarily well done. Strongly recommended.
Song of Bolo
I’ve just spent an outrageous amount of time watching cartoons and songs aimed at Japanese toddlers. And loved it. Who needs acid?
K…someone might enjoy this…or not as I am a touch warped…the specific comments on this article..ignoring the article itself, the most recent comments…twixt two characters re Herein82 and PaulRyanIsFuckingTerrible…a virtual moonscape of discorse…a magnificent desolation…

I’m a great Jack Vance fan and I found one of his stories in the Galaxy Magazine Archives that I didn’t know existed. Look forward to each Friday for the ephemera.

Uh huh, until you encounter the next hipster to come along . . . I’ve noticed in rather a few places attempts to describe the hipsters’ pileous fiasco, with “fascist” haircut being an attempt.
However, given how clueless hipsters are by definition, and how vehemently opposed to anything involving style and taste, there actually is a much more elegant summary: it’s a pre-combover, with the definite emphasis that once the top central hair comes out in handfuls, there _will_ be a combover, because only a hipster would be that tacky, tasteless, and utterly contrived.
The sides are shaved to emphasize the rest of the abomination. The top is combed from one spot to another to cover and attempt to hide where the hair will inevitably come out. The hair by Exxon is to keep everything in place. And thus in time, once the bald pattern appears, the hipster will already have been practicing the rest of the combover and will already have have the extensive experience for it.
—There continues to be the complete failure to achieve anything the least bit admirable or commendable, but then these _are_ hipsters . . . .
This.

Tim Newman, here.

Coffee on the house now, I should hope.
Never let your dog borrow the car.

Face like that, she’ll be let off with a caution.
Teachers also should avoid calling grade school children “boys and girls,” because the phrase is not “inclusive.“
I see the French are upset about Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk not containing enough French people. So much for distinguishing between historical fiction and pure documentary.
Darleen,
Ya gotta love the “thinking” around the “segregation” mentioned at the end. But I admit to being disappointed not to see “wrongthink” in there somewhere.
I am So Glad my two are long done with school.
“Still, it’s interesting how an institution famed far and wide for its low academic standards can rapidly abandon any standards at all.’
well, it’s not like they took anything of value away…
“Oddly, these media puff-pieces praising polyamory are remarkably short on such examples.”
And yet, there’s Laurie Penny…
DodgyBob, me too. Bless.
I’ve wanting to read the original Star King, serialised in Galaxy….
for the unintiated:

The planes reminded me of this thing.
The Me 163, the plane more dangerous to its pilots than to the enemy.
There may be snow on the roof, but there’s still fire in the furnace.
While wearing “flip-flops”, no less. I’m impressed.
