I am getting vexed at the shifting definition of drone. I always understood it to be an entirely autonomous vehicle, but of recent years the definition has been expanded to any unmanned aircraft, or any remote controlled aircraft. The story of the American shark-finner was instructive. The man clearly expected the people nearby to respond the way Americans would, i.e., get the hell out of the water, scream a little and then go find an authority figure to “do something.” He did not reckon on the different behaviors of another culture, where the locals take it upon themselves to “do something,” and without a moment’s hesitation.

Let us reiterate: this is arrant, dangerous bollocks. A lot of people desperate to believe in their own goodness can come up with some pretty damn convincing bollocks, and part of what makes it convincing is that they are so eager to convince themselves.
One day, probably in the not too distant future, the writer of those lines is going to be woken up early one morning by a persistent and nagging doubt that something is not quite right.
Then, probably, she’s going to look for the source of that doubt in amongst the lines of her old articles and books. And at some point, she is going to be struck forcefully by the revelation that every one of those criticisms she thought she was making about the world around her was, in actual fact, an unerringly precise portrait of herself and her political allies.

All of us work under pressure of time, and none of us are perfect, but – and most certainly not for the first time – a striking feature of that Baffler piece is its laziness. For instance, this second sentence (my italics):

It’s not ungrammatical, sure, but it does seems to be awfully slipshod and poorly constructed for someone who makes their living as a writer.

What examples does she give the reader to illustrate her claim that “these new free speech warriors” have nothing to say or even refuse to speak “when the microphones are finally shoved in front of their mouths”?
She gives none at all; just leaves it hanging, briefly, before changing the subject.
The idleness, the dishonesty, the projection as well as the ignorance of or contempt for anything resembling professional ethics in that one particular paragraph is made startlingly clear by drawing a contrast between those words and these incidents: this with Bret Weinstein, this with Heather MacDonald, this with Charles Murray, this with Milo Yiannopoulis, this with Janice Fiamengo, this with Christina Hoff-Sommers, this with Ben Shapiro, this with Jordan Peterson, this with Warren Farrell, and, perhaps bizarrely (or maybe not so bizarrely), even this with Bernie Sanders.
It is really quite hard for a speaker to be heard over the wailing of fire alarms, air horns, screaming, foot-stamping, or in the face of mayhem, rioting, petrol-bomb throwing, and even physical assault.
So for Penny to ask “why, when the microphones are finally shoved in front of their mouths, when they have the attention they crave, won’t they say [something]?” reaches some new peak of laziness and lying that are her hallmark signatures.
She gives none at all; just leaves it hanging, briefly, before changing the subject.
It strikes me as telling that, so far as I can see, Laurie still hasn’t addressed the leftist thuggery at Berkeley, despite repeated prompting, and despite being one of the people who had to be evacuated as a result, and during which women were punched, kicked and beaten with metal poles. By people Laurie considers righteous and heroic, her comrades-in-arms.
All I could find was a single tweet, now sadly inaccessible, in which she said, almost mockingly, that she didn’t feel threatened.
It’s appropriate to review Darleen’s link above regarding the faculty sacrifice of Bret Weinstein at Evergreen State College along with Penny’s essay on free speech. Nik’s critique of Penny could be rewritten regarding those seeking Weinstein’s ouster with very few changes.

I’m not sure laziness is quite the right word, given her presumed intent, and given her history of dishonesty. I mean, yes, it’s intellectually lazy to somehow omit all of the obvious, quite dramatic examples that would undermine her point, many of which have been tweeted to her prior to her article, along with graphic footage. But I doubt she just forgot these things. Rather than just being lazy or incompetent, and by implication supposedly unaware, I suspect that Laurie is taking care to not acknowledge any realities that would draw attention to the contrivance and dishonesty of her claims, even though she is almost certainly aware of them.
As noted previously, Laurie relies on a kind of faux naiveté.

Read the whole thing. It’s a variation of the old “supporting nazis’ right to free speech is about the first two words: supporting nazis”. The accusation is that anyone who wants people to have the right to say ugly or racist things therefore it must be because really want to say those ugly or racist things but are too cowardly to speak for themselves. It disparages people she disagrees while allowing her to flatter herself so it must be true.

I read through the litany of her alleged travails at the hands of white women and can’t help wondering how much of her personal drama is a) fabricated, or b) embellished significantly if not fabricated or c) results from some sort of paranoid psychosis? And BTW, for all the vitriol against white women, she herself looks like an average Indo-European. That “Indo” part is in there for a reason, I surmise.
After reading that, R. Sherman, I saw another, to me more likely, explanation. She created the scenario by purposely intruding on another woman’s space. This being yoga and women and such, there’s much more likely to be a higher concentration of the easily aggrieved and thus much easier opportunities for creating the situations that are grist for such essays. But I suppose that’s just my own prejudices showing. Of course.
Quick note:
Just saw “Wonder Woman” … Seriously, it is a very good movie with, surprising for a superhero summer blockbuster, excellent acting. There IS a story, good dialogue, character development and, yes, while the special effects are damned good they are NOT the center of attraction.
