Friday Ephemera
Headline of note. (h/t, Damian) // Horse versus rubber chicken. // How to sex, fatly. // Not all balloon pops are the same. // When poor impulse control meets a lack of foresight. // Surface tension. // The future is foolproof. // Two artificial intelligences engage in a strange and tedious argument. // Film effects of yesteryear. // Some animated engines. // Monochrome storms. // Classical mash-up. // Why you’re probably playing Monopoly all wrong. // Marbles and magnets. // Mongolian wrestlers. // Neglected grain silos. // Odd ice. // Impractical tableware. // And finally, some screwless, glueless Japanese joinery.
The Montana silos were interesting to me because I live just north of Montana, in Alberta, and have over the years traveled and hunted many times both here and there.
We call them ‘elevators’ in Canada and you can see some old and new ones of the Canadian prairie at http://tinyurl.com/jmgopys

I’m not saying it’s aliens, but…it’s aliens. Clearly a communications device. Or maybe it’s a frog transporter, like the People Mover at Disneyland.
Or maybe I should rethink my meds…
balloon pops
Back when I did electromagnetic interference testing, I spent a lot of time in anechoic chambers. They can be very disorienting at first – you are normally not aware of just how much echo there is around, especially in response to your own body’s motions and natural sounds. Even breathing and heartbeat. All those echos help you orient yourself, like the kinesthetic sense for joint angles and movements.
Also, I yawned a lot, trying to clear my ears.
After a long session, it helped to jog around a bit before driving back to the office.

I clicked the link, but alas, even For Science!(tm) I could not do it.
And then I read the titles of the other articles advertised and slowly backed away. Those grain silos sound interesting, and I am in need of a mental palate-cleanser.
trivia re: film effects
my late maternal grandfather (b. 1901) dropped out of school after 8th grade and with two of his friends, worked his way across country from PA to CA, ending up in Los Angeles.
He eventually landed a job with the Hal Roach Studios … ended up a stunt/camera truck driver – worked on several Keystone Cops & Harold Lloyd films.
Filming was it the early hours of the morning while the streets of Los Angeles were almost empty and they’d drive around like crazy filming.

See also this. I should warn you, the music is quite unrelenting and you will be faced with some mad people.
But hey, get that tone arm floating, baby.
Horse versus rubber chicken.
Oh.
I was expecting a comparison of conference catering menus.

By the way, the earth is flat.

Yes, and of things that might rub off on me, her “awesome” is the least of my worries.

Who walk among us. And drive, probably. Let’s hope that ‘experiencing so many cognitions’ isn’t too distracting.
A related article on the “How to Have Fat Sex” link is “How Not to Make Love to a Fat Girl“, although I am far more interested in “How to Not Make Love to a Fat Girl“. I suspect avoiding beers 4 – 11 figure in the advice.

I never had that problem. No matter how many beers I could still recognize a fat girl as fat. What is sorely needed, especially for beers > 1, is How Not To Make Love To A Crazy Girl.

No need, they were nice enough to provide a transcript. Reading it is, I imagine, much easier than watching.
The ornate tableware sculpted in gold and silver filigree by Wiebke Maurer is very beautiful. A work of modern art that understands the traditions of craftmanship and beauty, when so much modern ‘art’ wants to ‘transgress’ and ‘subvert’ those traditions – often in the cause of fashionable egotisms.
Did “Marbles and magnets” also appear last May?

Ah. So it did, in the comments. Though it is quite difficult to keep track of the 10,000 or so items ephemerised to date.

Ain’t complainin’; just noticin’. It’s clever enough to mention more than once.

Indeed, still bad enough:
Maybe why the thin ladies aren’t getting rolled in flour first ?
I will denounce myself and report for regrooving now.

Thank you Farnsworth. I was wondering whether I should share that particular piece of bro-wisdom. You’ve saved me the embarrassment:-).

Happy to take one for the team, I am hoping the hencelesbians may have been thinking the same thing and will take it easy during the regrooving.
Extremely disappointed not to discover, just what is a floating tone arm, exactly.
Speaking of Scientology, I recommend Leah Remini’s show exposing this lunacy. I know she is not the first to do so, but she may be the most effective.
Most striking, are the similarities between Scientology and Progressive Leftism.
Where’s Xenu when you need him?
“[…]just because I’m 30 and I’ve slept with a lot of people, and you kind of learn these things after sleeping a bunch of people.”
Hmm. You are extremely fat but nonetheless managed to bone a bunch of people.
For some reason, the phrase “dual low standards” comes to mind.

See here.
Ladies’ fashion nightmare. Do watch to the end.
…an go for the wet spot.
WTH, am I the only one here with OCD?
Because Farnsworth started it, remember: With “fat sex,” there’s a new wrinkle every day.
Don’t bogart the snacks in the correction booth, Muldoon.

I don’t know, what is the issue if one can’t hear the stereo ? I will denounce myself again preemptively.

Not to worry, the hencelesbians have quite the spread.

“Most striking, are the similarities between Scientology and Progressive Leftism.”
Yes, very interesting. I thought the same thing while watching one episode, but I suppose one cult operates much the same as another with the recruitment of vulnerables, indoctrination and member retention. Breakdown of the traditional family unit, replacement of religion with “religion” etc.
PiperPaul,
The similarities in the development of their own vocabulary, attacking enemies and “disconnecting” from those closest to you, who have the temerity to question or disbelieve, are typical cult characteristics.
However, Scientology and Progressive Leftism have taken disagreement and criticism to a new level, one is not simply considered a disbeliever but an enemy to be destroyed. Both groups will hunt you down, smear, stalk and slander you, go after your family and your means of employment seeking utter annihilation.
Morris dancers have performed with black face make-up since the origins of the dancing tradition in the 16th century.
Known as ‘Border Morris’ the tradition sees performers wearing a full-face of black paint in order to disguise themselves.
So we are to accept all cultural traditions but not one 500 years old if it involves people of pallor.
David,
Thanks for educating me regards floating tone arms. It’s a wonder I’ve made it this far in life without that knowledge.
What the heck is wrong with these people?
Progressive Leftist and Scientologists all make the same claim, they want to make the world a better place. Of course, this is hive mind pablum, as if everyone else seeks to make it a terrible place. Is it ego that allows them to think of themselves in such grand terms? Or is it a feeling of powerless over their own lives? Whenever I hear those words I can’t help but think, that if they just concentrated their efforts on making their own space a better place, then the world would actually be better for it.
Or, perhaps, it is just an avoidance technique.
Re: Scientology:
A now-dead client of mine was afflicted twice by this crew, who took both his wife and his brother. This perhaps 35 years ago.
Taking the wife destroyed the marriage, which I suppose may not have been that sound to begin with.
The brother eventually died of cancer in a well-known Edinburgh hospice. When his locker was cleared out, the family found a small pile of increasingly-menacing letters from the cult demanding payment for various programmes (I forget the term they use).
The demands were all addressed to the brother at the hospice.
So we are to accept all cultural traditions but not one 500 years old if it involves people of pallor.
Of course, because it is rayciss, even though when the tradition started the vast majority of people in what is now the UK had never seen anything but a person of pallor, which proves it is rayciss because one of their ancestors might have seen some brand of Roman Slave of Color or Moor captive from the Crusades, and the raycissism passed in in pure Lysenkoist evolution.
“…if they just concentrated their efforts on making their own space a better place, then the world would actually be better for it.”
Indeed. Perhaps better still, they could spend more time at home or alone and in silence.
